Fuzzy Dark Matter as a Solution to Reconcile the Stellar Mass Density of High-z Massive Galaxies and Reionization History

The JWST early release data show unexpected high stellar mass densities of massive galaxies at $7<z<11$, a high star formation efficiency is probably needed to explain this. However, such a high star formation efficiency would greatly increase the number of ionizing photons, which would be in serious conflict with the current cosmic microwave background (CMB) and other measurements of cosmic reionization history. To solve this problem, we explore the fuzzy dark matter (FDM), which is composed of ultra-light scalar particles, e.g. ultra-light axions, and calculate its halo mass function and stellar mass density for different axion masses. We find that the FDM model with $m_a\simeq 5\times10^{-23} \rm eV$ and a possible uncertainty range $\sim3\times10^{-23}-10^{-22}\, \rm eV$ can effectively suppress the formation of small halos and galaxies, so that with higher star formation efficiency, both the JWST data at $z\sim8$ and the reionization history measurements from the optical depth of CMB scattering and ionization fraction can be simultaneously matched. We also find that the JWST data at $z\sim10$ are still too high to fit in this scenario. We note that the estimated mean redshift of the sample may have large uncertainty, that it can be as low as $z\sim9$ depending on adopted spectral energy distribution (SED) templates and photometric-redshift code. Besides, the warm dark matter with $\sim$keV mass can also be an alternative choice, since it should have similar effects on halo formation as the FDM.

Cooper instability and superconductivity on the Penrose lattice

Bulk superconductivity (SC) has recently been observed in the Al-Zn-Mg quasicrystal (QC). To settle several fundamental issues of the SC on the QC, we use an attractive Hubbard model to perform a systematic study on the Penrose lattice. The first issue is the Cooper instability of the QC, i.e., no Fermi surface under an infinitesimal attractive interaction. Starting from the two-electron problem outside the filled Fermi-sea, we analytically prove that an infinitesimal Hubbard attraction can lead to the Cooper instability as long as the density of state is nonzero at the Fermi level, which provides the basis of the SC on the QC. Our numerical results yield that the Cooper pairing always takes place between the two time-reversal states, satisfying the Anderson's theorem. On this theorem, we perform a mean-field (MF) study at both zero and finite temperatures. The MF study also shows that an arbitrarily weak attraction can lead to the pairing order, with the resulted pairing state being well described by the BCS theory and the thermal dynamic behaviors being well consistent with experimental results. The second issue is about the superfluid density on the QC without translational symmetry. It's clarified that although the normal state of the system locates at the critical point of the metal-insulator transition, the pairing state exhibits real SC, carrying finite superfluid density that can be verified by the Meissner effect, consistent with experiment also. These revealed properties of the SC on the Penrose lattice are universal for all QCs.

Forecasting the Cross-Correlation of the CSST galaxy survey with the FAST HI Intensity Map

The cross-correlation of optical galaxies with the neutral hydrogen (HI) radiation intensity can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the HI intensity measurement. In this paper, we investigate the cross-correlation of the galaxy samples obtained by the spectroscopic survey of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST) with the HI Intensity mapping (IM) survey of the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST). Using the IllusitrisTNG simulation result at redshift $0.2 \sim 0.3$, we generate mock data of the CSST survey and a FAST L-band drift scan survey. The CSST spectroscopic survey can yield a sample of galaxies with a high comoving number density of $10^{-2} (\unit{Mpc}/h)^{-3}$ at $z \sim 0.3$. We cross-correlate the foreground-removed radio intensity with the CSST galaxies, including both the whole sample, and red and blue galaxy sub-samples separately. We find that in all cases the HI and optical galaxies are well correlated. The total HI abundance can be measured with a high precision from this correlation. A relative error of $\sim 0.6\%$ for $Ω_{\rm HI}$ could be achieved at $z\sim 0.3$ for an overlapping survey area of $10000 \unit{deg}^2$.

Relaxation of antiferromagnetic order and growth of Rényi entropy in a generalized Heisenberg star

Interacting central spin systems, in which a central spin is coupled to a strongly correlated spin bath with intrabath interaction, consist of an important class of spin systems beyond the usual Gaudin magnet. These systems are relevant to several realistic setups and serve as an interesting platform to study interaction controlled decoherence and frustration induced instability of magnetic order. Using an equations-of-motion method based on analytical representations of spin-operator matrix elements in the XX chain, we obtain exact long-time dynamics of a generalized Heisenberg star consisting of a spin-$S$ central spin and an inhomogeneously coupled XXZ chain of $N\leq 16$ bath spins. In contrast to previous studies where the central spin dynamics is mainly concerned, we focus on the influence of the central spin on the dynamics of magnetic orders within the spin bath. By preparing the XXZ bath in a Néel state, we find that in the gapless phase of the bath even weak system-bath coupling could lead to nearly perfect relaxation of the antiferromagnetic order. In the gapped phase, the staggered magnetization decays rapidly and approaches a steady value that increases with increasing anisotropy parameter. These findings suggest the possibility of controlling internal dynamics of strongly correlated many-spin systems by certain coupled auxiliary systems of even few degrees of freedom. We also study the dynamics of the Rényi entanglement entropy of the central spin when the bath is prepared in the ground state. Both the overall profile and initial growth rate of the Rényi entropy are found to exhibit minima at the critical point of the XXZ bath.

Fermi-Polaron in a driven-dissipative background medium

The study of polaron of an open quantum system plays an important role in both verifying the effectiveness of approximate many-body theory and predicting novel quantum phenomenone in open quantum systems. In a pioneering work, Piazza et al have proposed a Fermi-polaron scheme with a lossy impurity [54], which exhibits a novel long-lived attractive polaron branch in the quantum Zeno limit. However, we would also run into a counterpart problem that an impurity scatters with an open quantum bath exciting polarons, which is what we focus in on. In this work, we conclude the molecular state under the two limits of vanishing small and infinite large dissipation intensity as well as the reason why the dissipation range leads to the decrease of the gap between the molecular state and molecule-hole continuum in the former case by means of analytically research. The spectrum functions of molecular and polaron states with different dissipation range and loss rate are investigated. We find the spectral signals of molecular and polaron states will both diffuse firstly and then revives as the dissipation is on the raise. Moreover, it is shown that the attractive and repulsive polarons show different response to the increasing dissipation range in our model. At last, we exhibit the polaron energy, residue, effective mass and two-body decay for mass balanced and imbalanced systems. Our results might be useful for future cold atom experiment on open quantum systems.

Extracting Photometric Redshift from Galaxy Flux and Image Data using Neural Networks in the CSST Survey

The accuracy of galaxy photometric redshift (photo-$z$) can significantly affect the analysis of weak gravitational lensing measurements, especially for future high-precision surveys. In this work, we try to extract photo-$z$ information from both galaxy flux and image data expected to be obtained by China Space Station Telescope (CSST) using neural networks. We generate mock galaxy images based on the observational images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys of Hubble Space Telescope (HST-ACS) and COSMOS catalogs, considering the CSST instrumental effects. Galaxy flux data are then measured directly from these images by aperture photometry. The Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) and Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) are constructed to predict photo-$z$ from fluxes and images, respectively. We also propose to use an efficient hybrid network, which combines MLP and CNN, by employing transfer learning techniques to investigate the improvement of the result with both flux and image data included. We find that the photo-$z$ accuracy and outlier fraction can achieve $σ_{\rm NMAD} = 0.023$ and $η= 1.43\%$ for the MLP using flux data only, and $σ_{\rm NMAD} = 0.025$ and $η= 1.21\%$ for the CNN using image data only. The result can be further improved in high efficiency as $σ_{\rm NMAD} = 0.020$ and $η= 0.90\%$ for the hybrid transfer network. These approaches result in similar galaxy median and mean redshifts ~0.8 and 0.9, respectively, for the redshift range from 0 to 4. This indicates that our networks can effectively and properly extract photo-$z$ information from the CSST galaxy flux and image data.

Anisotropies of Cosmic Optical and Near-IR Background from China Space Station Telescope (CSST)

Anisotropies of the cosmic optical background (COB) and cosmic near-IR background (CNIRB) are capable of addressing some of the key questions in cosmology and astrophysics. In this work, we measure and analyze the angular power spectra of the simulated COB and CNIRB in the ultra-deep field of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST-UDF). The CSST-UDF covers about 9 square degrees, with magnitude limits ~28.3, 28.2, 27.6, 26.7 AB mag for point sources with 5-sigma detection in the r (0.620 um), i (0.760 um), z (0.915 um), and y (0.965 um) bands, respectively. According to the design parameters and scanning pattern of the CSST, we generate mock data, merge images and mask the bright sources in the four bands. We obtain four angular power spectra from l=200 to 2,000,000 (from arcsecond to degree), and fit them with a multi-component model including intrahalo light (IHL) using the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. We find that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the IHL is larger than 8 over the range of angular scales that are useful for astrophysical studies (l~10,000-400,000). Comparing to previous works, the constraints on the model parameters are improved by factors of 3~4 in this study, which indicates that the CSST-UDF survey can be a powerful probe on the cosmic optical and near-IR backgrounds.

Calibrating photometric redshift measurements with the Multi-channel Imager (MCI) of the China Space Station Telescope (CSST)

The China Space Station Telescope (CSST) photometric survey aims to perform a high spatial resolution (~0.15'') photometric imaging for the targets that cover a large sky area (~17,500 deg^2) and wide wavelength range (from NUV to NIR). It expects to explore the properties of dark matter, dark energy, and other important cosmological and astronomical areas. In this work, we evaluate whether the filter design of the Multi-channel Imager (MCI), one of the five instruments of the CSST, can provide accurate photometric redshift (photo-z) measurements with its nine medium-band filters to meet the relevant scientific objectives. We generate the mock data based on the COSMOS photometric redshift catalog with astrophysical and instrumental effects. The application of upper limit information of low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) data is adopted in the estimation of photo-z. We investigate the dependency of photo-z accuracy on the filter parameters, such as band position and width. We find that the current MCI filter design can achieve good photo-z measurements with accuracy sigma_z~0.017 and outlier fraction f_c~2.2%. It can effectively improve the photo-z measurements of the main CSST survey using the Survey Camera (SC) to an accuracy sigma_z~0.015 and outlier fraction f_c~1.5%. It indicates that the original MCI filters are proper for the photo-z calibration.

Prediction of Stable Ground-State Binary Sodium-Potassium Interalkalis under High Pressures

The complex structures and electronic properties of alkali metals and their alloys provide a natural laboratory for studying the interelectronic interactions of metals under compression. A recent theoretical study (J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2019, 10, 3006) predicted an interesting pressure-induced decomposition-recombination behavior of the Na2K compound over a pressure range of 10 - 500 GPa. However, a subsequent experiment (Phys. Rev. B 2020, 101, 224108) reported the formation of NaK rather than Na2K at pressures above 5.9 GPa. To address this discordance, we study the chemical stability of different stoichiometries of NaxK (x = 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, 3/4, 4/3, 3/2 and 1 - 4) by effective structure searching method combined with first-principles calculations. Na2K is calculated to be unstable at 5 - 35 GPa due to the decomposition reaction Na2K-> NaK + Na, coinciding well with the experiment. NaK undergoes a combination-decomposition-recombination process accompanied by an opposite charge-transfer behavior between Na and K with pressure. Besides NaK, two hitherto unknown compounds NaK3 and Na3K2 are uncovered. NaK3 is a typical metallic alloy, while Na3K2 is an electride with strong interstitial electron localization.

Spectroscopic and Photometric Redshift Estimation by Neural Networks For the China Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The estimation of spectroscopic and photometric redshifts (spec-z and photo-z) is crucial for future cosmological surveys. It can directly affect several powerful measurements of the Universe, e.g. weak lensing and galaxy clustering. In this work, we explore the accuracies of spec-z and photo-z that can be obtained in the China Space Station Optical Surveys (CSS-OS), which is a next-generation space survey, using neural networks. The 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1-d CNN) and Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP, one of the simplest forms of Artificial Neural Network) are employed to derive the spec-z and photo-z, respectively. The mock spectral and photometric data used for training and testing the networks are generated based on the COSMOS catalog. The networks have been trained with noisy data by creating Gaussian random realizations to reduce the statistical effects, resulting in similar redshift accuracy for both high-SNR (signal to noise ratio) and low-SNR data. The probability distribution functions (PDFs) of the predicted redshifts are also derived via Gaussian random realizations of the testing data, and then the best-fit redshifts and 1-sigma errors also can be obtained. We find that our networks can provide excellent redshift estimates with accuracies ~0.001 and 0.01 on spec-z and photo-z, respectively. Compared to existing photo-z codes, our MLP has similar accuracy but is more efficient in the training process. The fractions of catastrophic redshifts or outliers can be dramatically suppressed comparing to the ordinary template-fitting method. This indicates that the neural network method is feasible and powerful for spec-z and photo-z estimations in future cosmological surveys.

Cross-Correlation of Far-Infrared Background Anisotropies and CMB Lensing from Herschel and Planck satellites

The cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies and cosmic microwave background (CMB) lensing are powerful measurements for exploring the cosmological and astrophysical problems. In this work, we measure the auto-correlation power spectrum of the CIB anisotropies in the Herschel-SPIRE HerMES Large Mode Survey (HeLMS) field, and the cross power spectrum with the CMB lensing measurements from the Planck satellite. The HeLMS field covers more than 270 deg^2, which is much larger than the previous analysis. We use the Herschel Level 1 time stream data to merge the CIB maps at 250, 350, and 500 um bands, and mask the areas where the flux is greater than 3-sigma (~50 mJy/beam) or no measured data. We obtain the final CIB power spectra at 100<ell<20000 by considering several effects, such as beam function, mode coupling, transfer function, and so on. We also calculate the theoretical CIB auto- and cross-power spectra of CIB and CMB lensing by assuming that the CIB emissivity follows Gaussian distribution in redshift. We find that, for the CIB auto power spectra, we obtain the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 15.9, 15.7, and 15.3 at 250, 350, and 500 um, and for the CIBxCMB lensing power spectra, SNR of 7.5, 7.0, and 6.2 at 250, 350, and 500 um, respectively. Comparing to previous works, the constraints on the relevant CIB parameters are improved by factors of 2~5 in this study.

Kohn-Luttinger mechanism driven exotic topological superconductivity on the Penrose lattice

The Kohn-Luttinger mechanism for unconventional superconductivity (SC) driven by weak repulsive electron-electron interactions on a periodic lattice is generalized to the quasicrystal (QC) via a real-space perturbative approach. The repulsive Hubbard model on the Penrose lattice is studied as an example, on which a classification of the pairing symmetries is performed and a pairing phase diagram is obtained. Two remarkable properties of these pairing states are revealed, due to the combination of the presence of the point-group symmetry and the lack of translation symmetry on this lattice. Firstly, the spin and spacial angular momenta of a Cooper pair is de-correlated: for each pairing symmetry, both spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairings are possible even in the weak-pairing limit. Secondly, the pairing states belonging to the 2D irreducible representations of the $D_5$ point group can be time-reversal-symmetry-breaking topological SCs carrying spontaneous bulk super current and spontaneous vortices. These two remarkable properties are general for the SCs on all QCs, and are rare on periodic lattices. Our work starts the new area of unconventional SCs driven by repulsive interactions on the QC.

Towards quantum simulation of Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev model

We study a simplified version of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model with real interactions by exact diagonalization. Instead of satisfying a continuous Gaussian distribution, the interaction strengths are assumed to be chosen from discrete values with a finite separation. A quantum phase transition from a chaotic state to an integrable state is observed by increasing the discrete separation. Below the critical value, the discrete model can well reproduce various physical quantities of the original SYK model, including the volume law of the ground-state entanglement, level distribution, thermodynamic entropy, and out-of-time-order correlation (OTOC) functions. For systems of size up to $N=20$, we find that the transition point increases with system size, indicating that a relatively weak randomness of interaction can stabilize the chaotic phase. Our findings significantly relax the stringent conditions for the realization of SYK model, and can reduce the complexity of various experimental proposals down to realistic ranges.

Dynamic manipulation in piezoresponse force microscopy: creating non-equilibrium phases with large electromechanical response

Domains walls and topological defects in ferroelectric materials have emerged as a powerful new paradigm for functional electronic devices including memory and logic. Similarly, wall interactions and dynamics underpin a broad range of mesoscale phenomena ranging from giant electromechanical responses to memory effects. Exploring the functionalities of individual domain walls, their interactions, and controlled modifications of the domain structures is crucial for applications and fundamental physical studies. However, the dynamic nature of these features severely limits studies of their local physics since application of local biases or pressures in piezoresponse force microscopy induce wall displacement as a primary response. Here, we introduce a fundamentally new approach for the control and modification of domain structures based on automated experimentation whereby real space image-based feedback is used to control the tip bias during ferroelectric switching, allowing for modification routes conditioned on domain states under the tip. This automated experiment approach is demonstrated for the exploration of domain wall dynamics and creation of metastable phases with large electromechanical response.

Cosmology from the Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS) is a planned full sky survey operated by the Chinese Space Station Telescope (CSST). It can simultaneously perform the photometric imaging and spectroscopic slitless surveys, and will probe weak and strong gravitational lensing, galaxy clustering, individual galaxies and galaxy clusters, active galactic nucleus (AGNs), and so on. It aims to explore the properties of dark matter and dark energy and other important cosmological problems. In this work, we focus on two main CSS-OS scientific goals, i.e. the weak gravitational lensing (WL) and galaxy clustering surveys. We generate the mock CSS-OS data based on the observational COSMOS and zCOSMOS catalogs. We investigate the constraints on the cosmological parameters from the CSS-OS using the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method. The intrinsic alignments, galaxy bias, velocity dispersion, and systematics from instrumental effects in the CSST WL and galaxy clustering surveys are also included, and their impacts on the constraint results are discussed. We find that the CSS-OS can improve the constraints on the cosmological parameters by a factor of a few (even one order of magnitude in the optimistic case), compared to the current WL and galaxy clustering surveys. The constraints can be further enhanced when performing joint analysis with the WL, galaxy clustering, and galaxy-galaxy lensing data. Therefore, the CSS-OS is expected to be a powerful survey for exploring the Universe. Since some assumptions may be still optimistic and simple, it is possible that the results from the real survey could be worse. We will study these issues in details with the help of simulations in the future.

Testing photometric redshift measurements with filter definition of the Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS)

The Chinese Space Station Optical Survey (CSS-OS) is a major science project of the Space Application System of the China Manned Space Program. This survey is planned to perform both photometric imaging and slitless spectroscopic observations, and it will focus on different cosmological and astronomical goals. Most of these goals are tightly dependent on the accuracy of photometric redshift (photo-z) measurement, especially for the weak gravitational lensing survey as a main science driver. In this work, we assess if the current filter definition can provide accurate photo-z measurement to meet the science requirement. We use the COSMOS galaxy catalog to create a mock catalog for the CSS-OS. We compare different photo-z codes and fitting methods that using the spectral energy distribution (SED) template-fitting technique, and choose to use a modified LePhare code in photo-z fitting process. Then we investigate the CSS-OS photo-z accuracy in certain ranges of filter parameters, such as band position, width, and slope. We find that the current CSS-OS filter definition can achieve reasonably good photo-z results with sigma_z~0.02 and outlier fraction ~3%.

Data Mining for better material synthesis: the case of pulsed laser deposition of complex oxides

The pursuit of more advanced electronics, finding solutions to energy needs, and tackling a wealth of social issues often hinges upon the discovery and optimization of new functional materials that enable disruptive technologies or applications. However, the discovery rate of these materials is alarmingly low. Much of the information that could drive this rate higher is scattered across tens of thousands of papers in the extant literature published over several decades, and almost all of it is not collated and thus cannot be used in its entirety. Many of these limitations can be circumvented if the experimentalist has access to systematized collections of prior experimental procedures and results that can be analyzed and built upon. Here, we investigate the property-processing relationship during growth of oxide films by pulsed laser deposition. To do so, we develop an enabling software tool to (1) mine the literature of relevant papers for synthesis parameters and functional properties of previously studied materials, (2) enhance the accuracy of this mining through crowd sourcing approaches, (3) create a searchable repository that will be a community-wide resource enabling material scientists to leverage this information, and (4) provide through the Jupyter notebook platform, simple machine-learning-based analysis to learn the complex interactions between growth parameters and functional properties (all data and codes available on https://github.com/ORNL-DataMatls). The results allow visualization of growth windows, trends and outliers, and which can serve as a template for analyzing the distribution of growth conditions, provide starting points for related compounds and act as feedback for first-principles calculations. Such tools will comprise an integral part of the materials design schema in the coming decade.

Controlled manipulation of oxygen vacancies using nanoscale flexoelectricity

Oxygen vacancies, especially their distribution, are directly coupled to the electromagnetic properties of oxides and related emergent functionalities that have implication in device applications. Here using a homoepitaxial strontium titanate thin film, we demonstrate a controlled manipulation of the oxygen vacancy distribution using the mechanical force from a scanning probe microscope tip. By combining Kelvin probe force microscopy imaging and phase-field simulations, we show that oxygen vacancies can move under a stress-gradient-induced depolarisation field. When tailored, this nanoscale flexoelectric effect enables a controlled spatial modulation. In motion, the scanning probe tip thereby deterministically reconfigures the spatial distribution of vacancies. The ability to locally manipulate oxygen vacancies on-demand provides a tool for the exploration of mesoscale quantum phenomena, and engineering multifunctional oxide devices.
