Correlation-based Dual-band THz Channel Measurements and Characterization in a Laboratory

The Terahertz band, spanning from 0.1~THz to 10~THz, is envisioned as a key technology to realize ultra-high data rates in the 6G and beyond mobile communication systems, due to its abundant bandwidth resource. However, to realize THz communications, one substantial step is to fully understand the THz channels, which relies on extensive channel measurements. In this paper, using a correlation-based time domain channel sounder, measurement campaigns are conducted in a laboratory at 140~GHz and 220~GHz. In the data post-processing procedures, the time drift of clock signals is corrected using a linear interpolation/extrapolation method. Based on the measured results, the main objects that provide significant once-scattering clusters are found, based on which the scattering losses are calculated and analyzed. Furthermore, the channel characteristics, including path loss, shadow fading, K-factor, etc. are calculated and compared to 3GPP standard values. The propagation analysis and channel characteristics are helpful to study channel modeling and guide system design for THz communications.

Analysis note: two-particle correlation in $e^+e^-$ collisions at 91-209 GeV with archived ALEPH data

The first measurement of two-particle angular correlations for charged particles produced in $e^+e^-$ annihilation up to $\sqrt{s}$ = 209 GeV is presented. Hadronic $e^+e^-$ data, archived at center-of-mass energies ranging from 91 to 209 GeV, were collected using the ALEPH detector at LEP between 1992 and 2000. The angular correlation functions have been measured across a wide range of pseudorapidities and the full azimuth in bins of charged particle multiplicity. This is the first such measurement using LEP-II data. With LEP-II data at 91 GeV, neither the beam coordinate analysis nor the thrust coordinate analysis reveals significant long-range correlations, consistent with the finding in the previous measurement with the LEP-I sample. Results for $e^+e^-$ data at energies above 91 GeV, which allow for higher event multiplicities reaching approximately 50, are presented for the first time. A long-range near-side excess in the correlation function has been identified in the thrust axis analysis. Moreover, the two-particle correlation functions were decomposed using a Fourier series, and the resulting Fourier coefficients $v_n$ were compared with event generator outputs. In events with high multiplicity, featuring more than 50 particles, the extracted $v_2$ and $v_3$ magnitudes from the data are higher than those from the Monte Carlo reference.

3D Multi-system Bayesian Calibration with Energy Conservation to Study Rapidity-dependent Dynamics of Nuclear Collisions

Considerable information about the early-stage dynamics of heavy-ion collisions is encoded in the rapidity dependence of measurements. To leverage the large amount of experimental data, we perform a systematic analysis using three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of multiple collision systems -- large and small, symmetric and asymmetric. Specifically, we perform fully 3D multi-stage hydrodynamic simulations initialized by a parameterized model for rapidity-dependent energy deposition, which we calibrate on the hadron multiplicity and anisotropic flow coefficients. We utilize Bayesian inference to constrain properties of the early- and late- time dynamics of the system, and highlight the impact of enforcing global energy conservation in our 3D model.

Hybrid Hadronization of Jet Showers from $e^++e^-$ to $A+A$ with JETSCAPE

In this talk we review jet production in a large variety of collision systems using the JETSCAPE event generator and Hybrid Hadronization. Hybrid Hadronization combines quark recombination, applicable when distances between partons in phase space are small, and string fragmentation appropriate for dilute parton systems. It can therefore smoothly describe the transition from very dilute parton systems like $e^++e^-$ to full $A+A$ collisions. We test this picture by using JETSCAPE to generate jets in various systems. Comparison to experimental data in $e^++e^-$ and $p+p$ collisions allows for a precise tuning of vacuum baseline parameters in JETSCAPE and Hybrid Hadronization. Proceeding to systems with jets embedded in a medium, we study in-medium hadronization for jet showers. We quantify the effects of an ambient medium, focusing in particular on the dependence on the collective flow and size of the medium. Our results clarify the effects we expect from in-medium hadronization of jets on observables like fragmentation functions, hadron chemistry and jet shape.

A multistage framework for studying the evolution of jets and high-$p_T$ probes in small collision systems

Understanding the modification of jets and high-$p_T$ probes in small systems requires the integration of soft and hard physics. We present recent developments in extending the JETSCAPE framework to build an event generator, which includes correlations between soft and hard partons, to study jet observables in small systems. The multi-scale physics of the collision is separated into different stages. Hard scatterings are first sampled at binary collision positions provided by the Glauber geometry. They are then propagated backward in space-time following an initial-state shower to obtain the initiating partons' energies and momenta before the collision. These energies and momenta are then subtracted from the incoming colliding nucleons for soft-particle production, modeled by the 3D-Glauber + hydrodynamics + hadronic transport framework. This new hybrid approach (X-SCAPE) includes non-trivial correlations between jet and soft particle productions in small systems. We calibrate this framework with the final state hadrons' $p_T$-spectra from low to high $p_T$ in $p$-$p$, and and then compare with the spectra in $p$-$Pb$ collisions from the LHC. We also present results for additional observables such as the distributions of event activity as a function of the hardest jet $p_T$ in forward and mid-rapidity for both $p$-$p$ and $p$-$Pb$ collisions.

Optimization of Fossil Fuel Consumption under Grid Energy Supply by Wind Energy and Auxiliary Batteries Using Fossil Fuel for Energy Supply

In this paper, a class of systems in which auxiliary batteries fed by fossil fuel generation and wind farms work together to supply power to the grid are modeled and strategies are solved to minimize the consumption of fossil fuels while still allowing the total energy to satisfy the energy demand of the grid. The wind resource is modeled using stochastic differential equations and the grid energy demand is also stochastically modeled using stochastic differential equations. The two stochastic models are well calibrated using wind resource data from historical wind farms and historical grid energy demand data. Finally, dynamic programming is used to solve this optimization problem.

Phase Structure of Quantum Improved Schwarzschild-(Anti)de Sitter Black Holes

We study the phase structure of quantum improved Schwarzschild-(A)dS black holes in asymptotically safe gravity. Our results confirm some of the well-known properties of quantum black holes. For example, the quantum effect provides a repulsive force in the core region near singularity which stabilizes the thermodynamically unstable small black holes, and also creates a zero temperature state with finite size. We suggest that this could be a candidate for dark matter. We find a new second order phase transition between small and large black holes for quantum improved Schwarzschild-Anti de Sitter black holes. We also discuss the black holes with different spatial topologies and find a notable duality.

Need for Speed: Fast Correspondence-Free Lidar-Inertial Odometry Using Doppler Velocity

In this paper, we present a fast, lightweight odometry method that uses the Doppler velocity measurements from a Frequency-Modulated Continuous-Wave (FMCW) lidar without data association. FMCW lidar is a recently emerging technology that enables per-return relative radial velocity measurements via the Doppler effect. Since the Doppler measurement model is linear with respect to the 6-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) vehicle velocity, we can formulate a linear continuous-time estimation problem for the velocity and numerically integrate for the 6-DOF pose estimate afterward. The caveat is that angular velocity is not observable with a single FMCW lidar. We address this limitation by also incorporating the angular velocity measurements from a gyroscope. This results in an extremely efficient odometry method that processes lidar frames at an average wall-clock time of 5.64ms on a single thread, well below the 10Hz operating rate of the lidar we tested. We show experimental results on real-world driving sequences and compare against state-of-the-art Iterative Closest Point (ICP)-based odometry methods, presenting a compelling trade-off between accuracy and computation. We also present an algebraic observability study, where we demonstrate in theory that the Doppler measurements from multiple FMCW lidars are capable of observing all 6 degrees of freedom (translational and angular velocity).

Exploring the Use of Large Language Models for Reference-Free Text Quality Evaluation: An Empirical Study

Evaluating the quality of generated text is a challenging task in NLP, due to the inherent complexity and diversity of text. Recently, large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant attention due to their impressive performance in various tasks. Therefore, we present this paper to investigate the effectiveness of LLMs, especially ChatGPT, and explore ways to optimize their use in assessing text quality. We compared three kinds of reference-free evaluation methods. The experimental results prove that ChatGPT is capable of evaluating text quality effectively from various perspectives without reference and demonstrates superior performance than most existing automatic metrics. In particular, the Explicit Score, which utilizes ChatGPT to generate a numeric score measuring text quality, is the most effective and reliable method among the three exploited approaches. However, directly comparing the quality of two texts may lead to suboptimal results. We believe this paper will provide valuable insights for evaluating text quality with LLMs and have released the used data.

A Benchmark for Text Expansion: Datasets, Metrics, and Baselines

This work presents a new task of Text Expansion (TE), which aims to insert fine-grained modifiers into proper locations of the plain text to concretize or vivify human writings. Different from existing insertion-based writing assistance tasks, TE requires the model to be more flexible in both locating and generation, and also more cautious in keeping basic semantics. We leverage four complementary approaches to construct a dataset with 12 million automatically generated instances and 2K human-annotated references for both English and Chinese. To facilitate automatic evaluation, we design various metrics from multiple perspectives. In particular, we propose Info-Gain to effectively measure the informativeness of expansions, which is an important quality dimension in TE. On top of a pre-trained text-infilling model, we build both pipelined and joint Locate&Infill models, which demonstrate the superiority over the Text2Text baselines, especially in expansion informativeness. Experiments verify the feasibility of the TE task and point out potential directions for future research toward better automatic text expansion.

Graph Convolutional Network Enabled Power-Constrained HARQ Strategy for URLLC

In this paper, a power-constrained hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) transmission strategy is developed to support ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). In particular, we aim to minimize the delivery latency of HARQ schemes over time-correlated fading channels, meanwhile ensuring the high reliability and limited power consumption. To ease the optimization, the simple asymptotic outage expressions of HARQ schemes are adopted. Furthermore, by noticing the non-convexity of the latency minimization problem and the intricate connection between different HARQ rounds, the graph convolutional network (GCN) is invoked for the optimal power solution owing to its powerful ability of handling the graph data. The primal-dual learning method is then leveraged to train the GCN weights. Consequently, the numerical results are presented for verification together with the comparisons among three HARQ schemes in terms of the latency and the reliability, where the three HARQ schemes include Type-I HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR). To recapitulate, it is revealed that HARQ-IR offers the lowest latency while guaranteeing the demanded reliability target under a stringent power constraint, albeit at the price of high coding complexity.

Hard probes in isobar collisions as a probe of the neutron skin

We present an estimate of the yield of hard probes expected for collisions of the isobars $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr at collision energies reachable at RHIC and the LHC\@. These yields are proportional to the number of binary nucleon-nucleon interactions, which is characteristically different due to the presence of the large neutron skin in $^{96}_{40}$Zr. This provides an independent opportunity to measure the difference between the neutron skin of $^{96}_{44}$Ru and $^{96}_{40}$Zr, which can provide an important constraint on the Equation of State of cold neutron-rich matter.

Channel Measurement and Coverage Analysis for NIRS-Aided THz Communications in Indoor Environments

Due to large reflection and diffraction losses in the THz band, it is arguable to achieve reliable links in the none-line-of-sight (NLoS) cases. Intelligent reflecting surfaces, although are expected to solve the blockage problem and enhance the system connectivity, suffer from fabrication difficulty and operation complexity. In this work, non-intelligent reflecting surfaces (NIRS), which are simply made of costless metal foils and have no signal configuration capability, are adopted to enhance the signal strength and coverage in the THz band. Channel measurements are conducted in typical indoor scenarios at 306-321 GHz and 356-371 GHz bands to validate the effectiveness of the NIRS. Results measured with NIRS in different sizes show that large NIRS performs much better than small NIRS. Furthermore, by invoking the NIRS, the additional reflection loss can be reduced by more than 10~dB and the coverage ratio is increased by up to 39$\%$ for a 10~dB signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold.

Scaling Multi-Objective Security Games Provably via Space Discretization Based Evolutionary Search

In the field of security, multi-objective security games (MOSGs) allow defenders to simultaneously protect targets from multiple heterogeneous attackers. MOSGs aim to simultaneously maximize all the heterogeneous payoffs, e.g., life, money, and crime rate, without merging heterogeneous attackers. In real-world scenarios, the number of heterogeneous attackers and targets to be protected may exceed the capability of most existing state-of-the-art methods, i.e., MOSGs are limited by the issue of scalability. To this end, this paper proposes a general framework called SDES based on many-objective evolutionary search to scale up MOSGs to large-scale targets and heterogeneous attackers. SDES consists of four consecutive key components, i.e., discretization, optimization, evaluation, and refinement. Specifically, SDES first discretizes the originally high-dimensional continuous solution space to the low-dimensional discrete one by the maximal indifference property in game theory. This property helps evolutionary algorithms (EAs) bypass the high-dimensional step function and ensure a well-convergent Pareto front. Then, a many-objective EA is used for optimization in the low-dimensional discrete solution space to obtain a well-spaced Pareto front. To evaluate solutions, SDES restores solutions back to the original space via greedily optimizing a novel divergence measurement. Finally, the refinement in SDES boosts the optimization performance with acceptable cost. Theoretically, we prove the optimization consistency and convergence of SDES. Experiment results show that SDES is the first linear-time MOSG algorithm for both large-scale attackers and targets. SDES is able to solve up to 20 attackers and 100 targets MOSG problems, while the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods can only solve up to 8 attackers and 25 targets ones. Ablation study verifies the necessity of all components in SDES.

300 GHz Dual-Band Channel Measurement, Analysis and Modeling in an L-shaped Hallway

The Terahertz (THz) band (0.1-10 THz) has been envisioned as one of the promising spectrum bands for sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communications. In this paper, a dual-band angular-resolvable wideband channel measurement in an indoor L-shaped hallway is presented and THz channel characteristics at 306-321 GHz and 356-371 GHz are analyzed. It is found that conventional close-in and alpha-beta path loss models cannot take good care of large-scale fading in the non-line-of-sight (NLoS) case, for which a modified alpha-beta path loss model for the NLoS case is proposed and verified in the NLoS case for both indoor and outdoor L-shaped scenarios. To describe both large-scale and small-scale fading, a ray-tracing (RT)-statistical hybrid channel model is proposed in the THz hallway scenario. Specifically in the hybrid model, the deterministic part in hybrid channel modeling uses RT modeling of dominant multi-path components (MPCs), i.e., LoS and multi-bounce reflected paths in the near-NLoS region, while dominant MPCs at far-NLoS positions can be deduced based on the developed statistical evolving model. The evolving model describes the continuous change of arrival angle, power and delay of dominant MPCs in the NLoS region. On the other hand, non-dominant MPCs are generated statistically. The proposed hybrid approach reduces the computational cost and solves the inaccuracy or even missing of dominant MPCs through RT at far-NLoS positions.

300 GHz Wideband Channel Measurement and Analysis in a Lobby

The Terahertz (0.1-10 THz) band has been envisioned as one of the promising spectrum bands to support ultra-broadband sixth-generation (6G) and beyond communications. In this paper, a wideband channel measurement campaign in a 500- square-meter indoor lobby at 306-321 GHz is presented. The measurement system consists of a vector network analyzer (VNA)-based channel sounder, and a directional antenna equipped at the receiver to resolve multi-path components (MPCs) in the angular domain. In particular, 21 positions and 3780 channel impulse responses (CIRs) are measured in the lobby, including the line-of-sight (LoS), non-line-of-sight (NLoS) and obstructed-line-of-sight (OLoS) cases. The multi-path characteristics are summarized as follows. First, the main scatterers in the lobby include the glass, the pillar, and the LED screen. Second, best direction and omni-directional path losses are analyzed. Compared with the close-in path loss model, the optimal path loss offset in the alpha-beta path loss model exceeds 86 dB in the LoS case, and accordingly, the exponent decreases to 1.57 and below. Third, more than 10 clusters are observed in OLoS and NLoS cases, compared to 2.17 clusters on average in the LoS case. Fourth, the average power dispersion of MPCs is smaller in both temporal and angular domains in the LoS case, compared with the NLoS and OLoS counterparts. Finally, in contrast to hallway scenarios measured in previous works at the same frequency band, the lobby which is larger in dimension and square in shape, features larger path losses and smaller delay and angular spreads.

Strix: An End-to-End Streaming Architecture with Two-Level Ciphertext Batching for Fully Homomorphic Encryption with Programmable Bootstrapping

Homomorphic encryption (HE) enables computations on encrypted data by concealing information under noise for security. However, the process of bootstrapping, which resets the noise level in the ciphertext, is computationally expensive and requires a large bootstrapping key. The TFHE scheme offers a faster and programmable bootstrapping algorithm called PBS, crucial for security-focused applications like machine learning. Nevertheless, the current TFHE scheme lacks support for ciphertext packing, resulting in low throughput. This work thoroughly analyzes TFHE bootstrapping, identifies the bottleneck in GPUs caused by the blind rotation fragmentation problem, and proposes a hardware TFHE accelerator called Strix. Strix introduces a two-level batching approach to enhance the batch size in PBS, utilizes a specialized microarchitecture for efficient streaming data processing, and incorporates a fully-pipelined FFT microarchitecture to improve performance. It achieves significantly higher throughput than state-of-the-art implementations on both CPUs and GPUs, outperforming existing TFHE accelerators by a factor of 7.4.

Reliable Throughput of Generalized Collision Channel without Synchronization

We consider a generalized collision channel model for general multi-user communication systems, an extension of Massey and Mathys' collision channel without feedback for multiple access communications. In our model, there are multiple transmitters and receivers sharing the same communication channel. The transmitters are not synchronized and arbitrary time offsets between transmitters and receivers are assumed. A ``collision" occurs if two or more packets from different transmitters partially or completely overlap at a receiver. Our model includes the original collision channel as a special case. This paper focuses on reliable throughputs that are approachable for arbitrary time offsets. We consider both slot-synchronized and non-synchronized cases and characterize their reliable throughput regions for the generalized collision channel model. These two regions are proven to coincide. Moreover, it is shown that the protocol sequences constructed for multiple access communication remain ``throughput optimal" in the generalized collision channel model. We also identify the protocol sequences that can approach the outer boundary of the reliable throughput region.
