Null surgery on knots in L-spaces

Let $K$ be a knot in an L-space $Y$ with a Dehn surgery to a surface bundle over $S^1$. We prove that $K$ is rationally fibered, that is, the knot complement admits a fibration over $S^1$. As part of the proof, we show that if $K\subset Y$ has a Dehn surgery to $S^1 \times S^2$, then $K$ is rationally fibered. In the case that $K$ admits some $S^1 \times S^2$ surgery, $K$ is Floer simple, that is, the rank of $\hat{HFK}(Y,K)$ is equal to the order of $H_1(Y)$. By combining the latter two facts, we deduce that the induced contact structure on the ambient manifold $Y$ is tight. In a different direction, we show that if $K$ is a knot in an L-space $Y$, then any Thurston norm minimizing rational Seifert surface for $K$ extends to a Thurston norm minimizing surface in the manifold obtained by the null surgery on $K$ (i.e., the unique surgery on $K$ with $b_1>0$).

The prism manifold realization problem II

We continue our study of the realization problem for prism manifolds. Every prism manifold can be parametrized by a pair of relatively prime integers $p>1$ and $q$. We determine a complete list of prism manifolds $P(p, q)$ that can be realized by positive integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ when $q>p$. The methodology undertaken to obtain the classification is similar to that of the case $q<0$ in an earlier paper.

The prism manifold realization problem

The spherical manifold realization problem asks which spherical three-manifolds arise from surgeries on knots in $S^3$. In recent years, the realization problem for C, T, O, and I-type spherical manifolds has been solved, leaving the D-type manifolds (also known as the prism manifolds) as the only remaining case. Every prism manifold can be parametrized as $P(p,q)$, for a pair of relatively prime integers $p>1$ and $q$. We determine a complete list of prism manifolds $P(p, q)$ that can be realized by positive integral surgeries on knots in $S^3$ when $q<0$. The methodology undertaken to obtain the classification is similar to that of Greene for lens spaces.

Fintushel--Stern knot surgery in torus bundles

Suppose that $X$ is a torus bundle over a closed surface with homologically essential fibers. Let $X_K$ be the manifold obtained by Fintushel--Stern knot surgery on a fiber using a knot $K\subset S^3$. We prove that $X_K$ has a symplectic structure if and only if $K$ is a fibered knot. The proof uses Seiberg--Witten theory and a result of Friedl--Vidussi on twisted Alexander polynomials.

Finite Dehn surgeries on knots in $S^3$

We show that on a hyperbolic knot $K$ in $S^3$, the distance between any two finite surgery slopes is at most two and consequently there are at most three nontrivial finite surgeries. Moreover in case that $K$ admits three nontrivial finite surgeries, $K$ must be the pretzel knot $P(-2,3,7)$. In case that $K$ admits two noncyclic finite surgeries or two finite surgeries at distance two, the two surgery slopes must be one of ten or seventeen specific pairs respectively. For $D$-type finite surgeries, we improve a finiteness theorem due to Doig by giving an explicit bound on the possible resulting prism manifolds, and also prove that $4m$ and $4m+4$ are characterizing slopes for the torus knot $T(2m+1,2)$ for each $m\geq 1$.

Detection of knots and a cabling formula for A-polynomials

We say that a given knot $J\subset S^3$ is detected by its knot Floer homology and $A$-polynomial if whenever a knot $K\subset S^3$ has the same knot Floer homology and the same $A$-polynomial as $J$, then $K=J$. In this paper we show that every torus knot $T(p,q)$ is detected by its knot Floer homology and $A$-polynomial. We also give a one-parameter family of infinitely many hyperbolic knots in $S^3$ each of which is detected by its knot Floer homology and $A$-polynomial. In addition we give a cabling formula for the A-polynomials of cabled knots in $S^3$, which is of independent interest. In particular we give explicitly the A-polynomials of iterated torus knots.

Correction terms, $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm, and triangulations

We show that the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology give a lower bound to the the genus of one-sided Heegaard splittings and the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm. Using a result of Jaco--Rubinstein--Tillmann, this gives a lower bound to the complexity of certain closed $3$--manifolds. As an application, we compute the $\mathbb Z_2$--Thurston norm of the double branched cover of some closed 3--braids, and give upper and lower bounds for the complexity of these manifolds.

Heegaard Floer correction terms and rational genus bounds

Given an element in the first homology of a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$, one can consider the minimal rational genus of all knots in this homology class. This defines a function $Θ$ on $H_1(Y;\mathbb Z)$, which was introduced by Turaev as an analogue of Thurston norm. We will give a lower bound for this function using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology. As a corollary, we show that Floer simple knots in L-spaces are genus minimizers in their homology classes, hence answer questions of Turaev and Rasmussen about genus minimizers in lens spaces.

Dehn surgery on knots in $S^3$ producing Nil Seifert fibred spaces

We prove that there are exactly $6$ Nil Seifert fibred spaces which can be obtained by Dehn surgeries on non-trefoil knots in $S^3$, with $\{60, 144, 156, 288, 300\}$ as the exact set of all such surgery slopes up to taking the mirror images of the knots. We conjecture that there are exactly $4$ specific hyperbolic knots in $S^3$ which admit Nil Seifert fibred surgery. We also give some more general results and a more general conjecture concerning Seifert fibred surgeries on hyperbolic knots in $S^3$.

Some applications of Gabai's internal hierarchy

Any Haken 3--manifold (possibly with boundary consisting of tori) can be transformed into a $\mathrm{surface}\times S^1$ by a series of splitting and regluing along incompressible surfaces. This fact was proved by Gabai as an application of his sutured manifold theory. The first half of this paper provides a few technical details in the proof. In the second half of this paper, some applications of Gabai's theorem to Heegaard Floer homology are given. We refine the known results about the Thurson norm and fibrations. We also give some classification results for Floer simple knots in manifolds with positive $b_1$.

Half-integral finite surgeries on knots in $S^3$

Suppose that a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a finite surgery, Boyer and Zhang proved that the surgery slope must be either integral or half-integral, and they conjectured that the latter case does not happen. Using the correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology, we prove that if a hyperbolic knot in $S^3$ admits a half-integral finite surgery, then the knot must have the same knot Floer homology as one of eight non-hyperbolic knots which are known to admit such surgeries, and the resulting manifold must be one of ten spherical space forms. As knot Floer homology carries a lot of information about the knot, this gives a strong evidence to Boyer--Zhang's conjecture.

Cosmetic surgeries on knots in $S^3$

Two Dehn surgeries on a knot are called {\it purely cosmetic}, if they yield manifolds that are homeomorphic as oriented manifolds. Suppose there exist purely cosmetic surgeries on a knot in $S^3$, we show that the two surgery slopes must be the opposite of each other. One ingredient of our proof is a Dehn surgery formula for correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology.

Non-simple genus minimizers in lens spaces

Given a one-dimensional homology class in a lens space, a question related to the Berge conjecture on lens space surgeries is to determine all knots realizing the minimal rational genus of all knots in this homology class. It is known that simple knots are rational genus minimizers. In this paper, we construct many non-simple genus minimizers. This negatively answers a question of Rasmussen.

On slope genera of knotted tori in 4-space

In this note, we investigate genera for the slopes of a knotted torus in the 4-sphere analogous to the genus of a classical knot. We compare various formulations of this notion, and use this notion to study the extendable subgroup of the mapping class group of the knotted torus.

Characterizing slopes for torus knots

A slope $\frac pq$ is called a characterizing slope for a given knot $K_0$ in $S^3$ if whenever the $\frac pq$-surgery on a knot $K$ in $S^3$ is homeomorphic to the $\frac pq$-surgery on $K_0$ via an orientation preserving homeomorphism, then $K=K_0$. In this paper we try to find characterizing slopes for torus knots $T_{r,s}$. We show that any slope $\frac pq$ which is larger than the number $\frac{30(r^2-1)(s^2-1)}{67}$ is a characterizing slope for $T_{r,s}$. The proof uses Heegaard Floer homology and Agol--Lackenby's 6--Theorem. In the case of $T_{5,2}$, we obtain more specific information about its set of characterizing slopes by applying more Heegaard Floer homology techniques.

Virtual Betti numbers and virtual symplecticity of 4-dimensional mapping tori

In this note, we compute the virtual first Betti numbers of 4-manifolds fibering over $S^1$ with prime fiber. As an application, we show that if such a manifold is symplectic with nonpositive Kodaira dimension, then the fiber itself is a sphere or torus bundle over $S^1$. In a different direction, we prove that if the 3-dimensional fiber of such a 4-manifold is virtually fibered then the 4-manifold is virtually symplectic unless its virtual first Betti number is 1.

Khovanov module and the detection of unlinks

We study a module structure on Khovanov homology, which we show is natural under the Ozsvath-Szabo spectral sequence to the Floer homology of the branched double cover. As an application, we show that this module structure detects trivial links. A key ingredient of our proof is that the H_1/Torsion module structure on Heegaard Floer homology detects S^1xS^2 connected summands.
