Information Theoretical Analysis of Quantum Metrology

We address the framework of analysing quantum metrology in the information-theoretic picture. Firstly we show how to extract the maximum amount of information in general via suitable state initialization of the probes at the beginning and a quantum measurement at the end. Our analysis can apply to both the single-parameter and the multi-parameter estimation procedures as well as to any other quantum information processing procedures. We then establish a direct connection between the information-theoretic picture of quantum metrology and its conventional variance-covariance picture, by showing that any estimation procedure achieves Heisenberg limit in variance-covariance picture can also reach the information-theoretic Heisenberg limit in the asymptotic sense. As a direct consequence, we argue that the entangled measurement is not necessary for achieving Heisenberg limit in the information-theoretic pictures, which is explicitly illustrated for the Quantum-Classical parallel strategy of quantum metrology with a separable measurement employed and the Heisenberg limit saturated in both pictures.

Quantum coherence and geometric quantum discord

Quantum coherence and quantum correlations are of fundamental and practical significance for the development of quantum mechanics. They are also cornerstones of quantum computation and quantum communication theory. Searching physically meaningful and mathematically rigorous quantifiers of them are long-standing concerns of the community of quantum information science, and various faithful measures have been introduced so far. We review in this paper the measures of discordlike quantum correlations for bipartite and multipartite systems, the measures of quantum coherence for any single quantum system, and their relationship in different settings. Our aim is to provide a full review about the resource theory of quantum coherence, including its application in many-body systems, and the discordlike quantum correlations which were defined based on the various distance measures of states. We discuss the interrelations between quantum coherence and quantum correlations established in an operational way, and the fundamental characteristics of quantum coherence such as their complementarity under different basis sets, their duality with path information of an interference experiment, their distillation and dilution under different operations, and some new viewpoints of the superiority of the quantum algorithms from the perspective of quantum coherence. Additionally, we review properties of geometric quantum correlations and quantum coherence under noisy quantum channels. Finally, the main progresses for the study of quantum correlations and quantum coherence in the relativistic settings are reviewed. All these results provide an overview for the conceptual implications and basic connections of quantum coherence, quantum correlations, and their potential applications in various related subjects of physics.

Symmetric shear banding and swarming vortices in bacterial "superfluids"

Bacterial suspensions--a premier example of active fluids--show an unusual response to shear stresses. Instead of increasing the viscosity of the suspending fluid, the emergent collective motions of swimming bacteria can turn a suspension into a "superfluid" with zero apparent viscosity. Although the existence of active "superfluids" has been demonstrated in bulk rheological measurements, the microscopic origin and dynamics of such an exotic phase have not been experimentally probed. Here, using high-speed confocal rheometry, we study the dynamics of concentrated bacterial suspensions under simple planar shear. We find that bacterial "superfluids" under shear exhibit unusual symmetric shear bands, defying the conventional wisdom on shear-banding of complex fluids, where the formation of steady shear bands necessarily breaks the symmetry of unsheared samples. We propose a simple hydrodynamic model based on the local stress balance and the ergodic sampling of nonequilibrium shear configurations, which quantitatively describes the observed symmetric shear-banding structure. The model also successfully predicts various interesting features of swarming vortices in stationary bacterial suspensions. Our study provides new insights into the physical properties of collective swarming in active fluids and illustrates their profound influences on transport processes.

Demonstration of irreversibility and dissipation relation of thermodynamics with a superconducting qubit

We investigate experimentally the relation between thermodynamical irreversibility and dissipation on a superconducting Xmon qubit. This relation also implies the second law and the Landauer principle on dissipation in the irreversible computations. In our experiment, the qubit is initialized to states according to Gibbs distribution. Work injection and extraction processes are conducted through two kinds of unitary driving protocols, for both a forward process and its corresponding mirror reverses. Relative entropy and relative Re'nyi entropy are employed to measure the asymmetry between paired forward and backward work injection or extraction processes. We show experimentally that relative entropy and relative Re'nyi entropy measured irreversibility are related to the average of work dissipation and average of exponentiated work dissipation respectively. Our work provides solid experimental support for the theory of quantum thermodynamics.

Perturbative analysis of quantum fluctuation theorems in a driven open system

We give a perturbative analysis of Crooks relation and Jarzynski equality in an arbitrary driven quantum system weakly coupled to a heat bath. Invoking no efficient Hamiltonian nor any restriction on the form of the coupling, we derive the first-order correction to Crooks relation and Jarzynski equality in terms of the interacting Hamiltonian. A Crooks type of relation about energy increment in the system and nonvanishing heat expenditure to the heat bath up to the second order of interaction would be given by the way. Our results tell us that deviation of the quantum fluctuation relations is mainly caused by energy trapped interaction rather than the heat flow to (or from) heat bath. We also show a way of defining work in weak coupling regime which is consistent to the work definition in closed systems and thus deepen our understanding of work in quantum realm.

Convex roof measures of coherence

We provide a general construction of convex roof measures of coherence. This construction is based on arbitrary coherence measures of pure states in the framework of resource theory of coherence. Convex roof measures of coherence bound from above all possible coherence measures, given specific valid quantifications of pure states.

Reply to "Failure to replicate long-range tunable attractions in colloidal system"

An arxiv paper, ref. [1] by Cao et al., claimed that the tunable attraction reported in our ref. [2] could not be detected. Ref. [1] was submitted to Nature in Apr. 2016 as a Comment on our ref. [2]. Our reply in May 2016 responded to ref. [1] and was reviewed by the editor of Nature and an external referee. Ref. [1] was rejected by Nature in Aug. 2016. We provide our reply, which answers all of the criticisms in ref. [1], in Appendix I. The main text contains a brief reply to the main criticisms.

Dynamics of ellipsoidal tracers in swimming algal suspensions

Enhanced diffusion of passive tracers immersed in active fluids is a universal feature of active fluids and has been extensively studied in recent years. Similar to microrheology for equilibrium complex fluids, the unusual enhanced particle dynamics reveal intrinsic properties of active fluids. Nevertheless, previous studies have shown that the translational dynamics of spherical tracers are qualitatively similar, independent of whether active particles are pushers or pullers---the two fundamental classes of active fluids. Is it possible to distinguish pushers from pullers by simply imaging the dynamics of passive tracers? Here, we investigated the diffusion of isolated ellipsoids in algal C. reinhardtii suspensions---a model for puller-type active fluids. In combination with our previous results on pusher-type E. coli suspensions [Peng et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 068303 (2016)], we showed that the dynamics of asymmetric tracers show a profound difference in pushers and pullers due to their rotational degree of freedom. Although the laboratory-frame translation and rotation of ellipsoids are enhanced in both pushers and pullers, similar to spherical tracers, the anisotropic diffusion in the body frame of ellipsoids shows opposite trends in the two classes of active fluids. An ellipsoid diffuses fastest along its major axis when immersed in pullers, whereas it diffuses slowest along the major axis in pushers. This striking difference can be qualitatively explained using a simple hydrodynamic model. In addition, our study on algal suspensions reveals that the influence of the near-field advection of algal swimming flows on the translation and rotation of ellipsoids shows different ranges and strengths. Our work provides not only new insights into universal organizing principles of active fluids, but also a convenient tool for detecting the class of active particles.

Maximally coherent states and coherence-preserving operations

We investigate the maximally coherent states to provide a refinement in quantifying coherence and give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations. A maximally coherent state can be considered as the resource to create arbitrary quantum states of the same dimension by merely incoherent operations. We propose that only the maximally coherent states should achieve the maximal value for a coherence measure and use this condition as an additional criterion for coherence measures to obtain a refinement in quantifying coherence which excludes the invalid and inefficient coherence measures. Under this new criterion, we then give a measure-independent definition of the coherence-preserving operations, which play a similar role in quantifying coherence as that played by the local unitary operations in the scenario of studying entanglement.

Diffusion of an ellipsoid in bacterial suspensions

Active matter such as swarming bacteria and motile colloids exhibits exotic properties different from conventional equilibrium materials. Among these properties, the enhanced diffusion of tracer particles is generally deemed as a hallmark of active matter. Here, rather than spherical tracers, we investigate the diffusion of isolated ellipsoids in quasi-two-dimensional bacterial bath. Our study reveals a nonlinear enhancement of both translational and rotational diffusions. More importantly, we uncover an anomalous coupling between translation and rotation that is strictly prohibited in the classic Brownian diffusion. Combining experiments with theoretical modeling, we show that such an anomaly arises from generic stretching flows induced by swimming bacteria. Our work illustrates a universal organizing principle of active matter and sheds new light on fundamental transport processes in microbiological systems.

Lévy-driven Fluid Queue with Server Breakdowns and Vacations

In this paper, we consider a Lévy-driven fluid queueing system where the server may subject to breakdowns and repairs. In addition, the server will leave for a vacation each time when he finds an empty system. We cast the queueing process as a Lévy process modified to have random jumps at two classes of stopping times. By using the Kella-Whitt martingale method, we obtain the limiting distribution of the virtual waiting time process. Moreover, we investigate the busy period, the correlation structure and the stochastic decomposition properties. These results may be generalized to Lévy processes with multi-class jump inputs or Lévy-driven queues with multiple input classes.

On the BMAP_1, BMAP_2/PH/g, c retrial queueing system

In this paper, we analyze a retrial queueing system with Batch Markovian Arrival Processes and two types of customers. The rate of individual repeated attempts from the orbit is modulated according to a Markov Modulated Poisson Process. Using the theory of multi-dimensional asymptotically quasi-Toeplitz Markov chain, we obtain the stability condition and the algorithm for calculating the stationary state distribution of the system. Main performance measures are presented. Furthermore, we investigate some optimization problems. The algorithm for determining the optimal number of guard servers and total servers is elaborated. Finally, this queueing system is applied to the cellular wireless network. Numerical results to illustrate the optimization problems and the impact of retrial on performance measures are provided. We find that the performance measures are mainly affected by the two types of customers' arrivals and service patterns, but the retrial rate plays a less crucial role.
