Sharp Interface Limit for Compressible Immiscible Two-Phase Dynamics with Relaxation

In this paper, the compressible immiscible two-phase flow with relaxation is investigated, this model can be regarded as a natural modification of Jin-Xin relaxation scheme proposed and developed by S.Jin and Z.P.Xin([Comm.Pure Appl.Math., 48,1995]) in view of the numerical approximation of conservation laws. Given any entropy solution consists of two different families of shocks interacting at some positive time for the standard two-phase compressible Euler equations, it is proved that such entropy solution is the sharp interface limit for a family global strong solutions of the modified Jin-Xin relaxation scheme for Navier-Stokes/Allen-Cahn system, here the relaxation time is selected as the thickness of the interface, weighted estimation and improved antiderivative method are used in the proof. Moreover, the simulation results are given by this modified Jin-Xin relaxation scheme method. Both numerical and theoretical results show that, the interacting shock waves can pass through the interface without any effect.

Global Classical Solutions to Full Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic System with Large Oscillations and Vacuum in 3D Exterior Domains

The full compressible magnetohydrodynamic system in three-dimensional exterior domains is investigated. For the initial-boundary-value problem of this system with slip boundary condition for the velocity, adiabatic one for the temperature, and perfect one for the magnetic field, the global existence and uniqueness of classical solutions is established, under the condition that the initial data are of small energy but possibly large oscillations. In particular, the initial density and temperature are both allowed to vanish. Moreover, the large-time behavior of the classical solutions is also obtained.

Manipulating non-Hermitian skin effect via electric fields

In non-Hermitian systems, the phenomenon that the bulk-band eigenstates are accumulated at the boundaries of the systems under open boundary conditions is called non-Hermitian skin effect (NHSE), which is one of the most iconic and important features of a non-Hermitian system. In this work, we investigate the fate of NHSE in the presence of electric fields by analytically calculating the dynamical evolution of an initial bulk state and numerically computing the spectral winding number, the distributions of eigenstates, as well as the dynamical evolutions. We show abundant manipulation effects of dc and ac fields on the NHSE, and that the physical mechanism behind these effects is the interplay between the Stark localization, dynamic localization and the NHSE. In addition, the finite size analysis of the non-Hermitian system with a pure dc field shows the phenomenon of size-dependent NHSE. We further propose a scheme to realize the discussed model based on an electronic circuit. The results will help to deepen the understanding of NHSE and its manipulation.

Global Strong Solutions to Density-Dependent Viscosity Navier-Stokes Equations in 3D Exterior Domains

The nonhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity is studied in three-dimensional (3D) exterior domains with nonslip or slip boundary conditions. We prove that the strong solutions exists globally in time provided that the gradient of the initial velocity is suitably small. Here the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states. Moreover, after developing some new techniques and methods, the large-time behavior of the strong solutions with exponential decay-in-time rates is also obtained.

Beating standard quantum limit via two-axis magnetic susceptibility measurement

We report a metrology scheme which measures magnetic susceptibility of an atomic spin ensemble along the $x$ and $z$ direction and produces parameter estimation with precision beating the standard quantum limit. The atomic ensemble is initialized via one-axis spin squeezing with optimized squeezing time and parameter $ϕ$ to be estimated is assumed as uniformly distributed between 0 and $2π$. One estimation of $ϕ$ can be produced with every two magnetic susceptibility data measured along the two axis respectively, which has imprecision scaling $(1.43\pm{}0.02)/N^{0.687\pm0.003}$ with respect to the number N of atomic spins. The measurement scheme is easy to implement and thus one step towards practical application of quantum metrology.

On the asymptotic behavior of the one-dimensional motion of the polytropic ideal gas with degenerate heat conductivity

We consider the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system with constant viscosity and the nonlinear heat conductivity being proportional to a positive power of the temperature which may be degenerate. This problem is imposed on the stress-free boundary condition, which reveals the motion of a viscous heat-conducting perfect polytropic gas with adiabatic ends putting into a vacuum. We prove that the solution of one dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes system with the stress-free boundary condition shares the same large-time behavior as the case of constant heat conductivity.

Derivation of the Hall-MHD equations from the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations

By using a set of scaling limits, the authors in \cite{ADFL,SS} proposed a framework of deriving the Hall-MHD equations from the two-fluids Euler-Maxwell equations for electrons and ions. In this paper, we derive the Hall-MHD equations from the Navier-Stokes-Maxwell equations with generalized Ohm's law in a mathematically rigorous way via the spectral analysis and energy methods.

Imaging the emergence of bacterial turbulence: phase diagram and transition kinetics

We experimentally study the emergence of collective bacterial swimming, a phenomenon often referred to as bacterial turbulence. A phase diagram of the flow of 3D E. coli suspensions spanned by bacterial concentration, the swimming speed of bacteria and the number fraction of active swimmers is systematically mapped, which shows quantitative agreement with kinetic theories and demonstrates the dominant role of hydrodynamic interactions in bacterial collective swimming. More importantly, we trigger bacterial turbulence by suddenly increasing the swimming speed of light-powered bacteria and image the transition to the turbulence in real time. Our experiments identify two unusual kinetic pathways, i.e., the one-step transition with long incubation periods near the phase boundary and the two-step transition driven by long-wavelength instabilities deep inside the turbulent phase. Our study provides not only a quantitative verification of existing theories, but also new insights into interparticle interactions and transition kinetics of bacterial turbulence.

Robust Semantic Segmentation By Dense Fusion Network On Blurred VHR Remote Sensing Images

Robust semantic segmentation of VHR remote sensing images from UAV sensors is critical for earth observation, land use, land cover or mapping applications. Several factors such as shadows, weather disruption and camera shakes making this problem highly challenging, especially only using RGB images. In this paper, we propose the use of multi-modality data including NIR, RGB and DSM to increase robustness of segmentation in blurred or partially damaged VHR remote sensing images. By proposing a cascaded dense encoder-decoder network and the SELayer based fusion and assembling techniques, the proposed RobustDenseNet achieves steady performance when the image quality is decreasing, compared with the state-of-the-art semantic segmentation model.

Anomalous critical point behavior in dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2Sb2

In this paper we report successful synthesis and magnetic properties of (Ca,Na)(Zn,Mn)2Sb2 as a new ferromagnetic dilute magnetic semiconductor (DMS). In this DMS material the concentration of magnetic moments can be controlled independently from the concentration of electric charge carriers that are required for mediating magnetic interactions between these moments. This feature allows us to separately investigate the effect of carriers and of spins on the ferromagnetic properties of this new DMS alloy, and particularly of the critical ferromagnetic behavior. We use modified Arrott plot technique to establish critical exponents b, g, and d of this alloy. We find that at low Mn concentrations (< 10 at.%), it is governed by short-range 3D-Ising behavior, with experimental values of b, g, and d very close to theoretical 3D-Ising values of 0.325, 1.24, and 4.815. However, as the Mn concentration increases, this DMS material exhibits a mixed-phase behavior, with g retaining its 3D-Ising characteristics, but b crossing over to longer-range mean-field behavior.

A substantial increase of Curie temperature in a new type of diluted magnetic semiconductors via effects of chemical pressure

Chemical pressure is an effective method to tune physical properties, particularly for diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) of which ferromagnetic ordering is mediated by charge carriers. Via substitution of smaller Ca for larger Sr, we introduce chemical pressure on (Sr,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2 to fabricate a new DMS material (Ca,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2. Carriers and spins are introduced by substitutions of (Ca,Na) and (Cd,Mn) respectively. The unit cell volume reduces by 6.2% after complete substitution of Ca for Sr, suggesting a subsistent chemical pressure. Importantly the local geometry of [Cd/MnAs4] tetrahedron is optimized via chemical compression that increases the Mn-As hybridization leading to enhanced ferromagnetic interactions. As a result, the maximum Curie temperature (TC) is increased by about 50% while the the maximum saturation moment increases by over 100% from (Sr,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2 to (Ca,Na)(Cd,Mn)2As2. The chemical pressure estimated from the equation of state is equal to an external physical pressure of 3.6 GPa.

Feedback Ansatz for Adaptive-Feedback Quantum Metrology Training with Machine Learning

It is challenging to construct metrology schemes which harness quantum features such as entanglement and coherence to surpass the standard quantum limit. We propose an ansatz for devising adaptive-feedback quantum metrology (AFQM) strategy which reduces greatly the searching space. Combined with the Markovian feedback assumption, the computational complexity for designing AFQM would decrease from $N^7$ to $N^4$ , for N probing systems. The feedback scheme devising via machine learning such as particle-swarm optimization and derivative evolution would thus requires much less time and produces equally well imprecision scaling. We have thus devised an AFQM for 207-partite system. The imprecision scaling would persist steadily for N > 207 when the parameter settings for 207-partite system is employed without further training. Our ansatz indicates an built-in resilience of the feedback strategy against qubit loss. The feedback strategies designed for the noiseless scenarios have been tested against the qubit loss noise and the phase fluctuation noise. Our numerical result confirms great resilience of the feedback strategies against the two kinds of noise.

On the Global Strong Solutions to Magnetohydrodynamics with Density-Dependent Viscosity and Degenerate Heat-Conductivity in Unbounded Domains

For the equations of a planar magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) compressible flow with the viscosity depending on the specific volume of the gas and the heat conductivity being proportional to a positive power of the temperature, we obtain global existence of the unique strong solutions to the Cauchy problem or the initial-boundary-value one under natural conditions on the initial data in one-dimensional unbounded domains. Our result generalizes the classical one of the compressible Navier-Stokes system with constant viscosity and heat conductivity ([Kazhikhov. Siberian Math. J. (1982)]) to the planar MHD compressible flow with nonlinear viscosity and degenerate heat-conductivity, which means no shock wave, vacuum, or mass or heat concentration will be developed in finite time, although the interaction between the magnetodynamic effects and hydrodynamic is complex and the motion of the flow has large oscillations.

Observation of dynamical quantum phase transition by a superconducting qubit simulation

A dynamical quantum phase transition can occur during time evolution of sudden quenched quantum systems across a phase transition. It corresponds to the nonanalytic behavior at a critical time of the rate function of the quantum state return amplitude, analogous to nonanalyticity of the free energy density at the critical temperature in macroscopic systems. A variety of many-body systems can be represented in momentum space as a spin-1/2 state evolving on the Bloch sphere, where each momentum mode is decoupled and thus can be simulated independently by a single qubit. Here, we report the observation of a dynamical quantum phase transition in a superconducting qubit simulation of the quantum quench dynamics of many-body systems. We take the Ising model with a transverse field as an example for demonstration. In our experiment, the spin state, which is initially polarized longitudinally, evolves based on a Hamiltonian with adjustable parameters depending on the momentum and strength of the transverse magnetic field. The time evolving quantum state is read out by state tomography. Evidence of dynamical quantum phase transitions, such as paths of time evolution states on the Bloch sphere, non-analytic behavior of the dynamical free energy and the emergence of Skyrmion lattice in momentum-time space, is observed. The experimental data agrees well with theoretical and numerical calculations. The experiment demonstrates for the first time explicitly the topological invariant, both topologically trivial and non-trivial, for dynamical quantum phase transitions. Our results show that the quantum phase transitions of this class of many-body systems can be simulated successfully with a single qubit by varying certain control parameters over the corresponding momentum range.

Complementary relation of quantum coherence and quantum correlations in multiple measurements

Quantum coherence and quantum correlations lie in the center of quantum information science, since they both are considered as fundamental reasons for significant features of quantum mechanics different from classical mechanics. We present a group of complementary relations for quantum coherence and quantum correlations; specifically, we focus on thermal discord and conditional information in scenarios of multiple measurements. We show that the summation of quantum coherence quantified in different bases has a lower bound, resulting from entropic uncertainty relations with multiple measurements. Similar results are also obtained for thermal discord and for post-measurement conditional information with multiple measurements in a multipartite system. These results indicate the general applications of the uncertainty principle to various concepts of quantum information.

A Universal Quantum Computing Virtual Machine

A medium-scale quantum computer with full universal quantum computing capability is necessary for various practical aims and testing applications. Here we report a 34-qubit quantum virtual machine (QtVM) based on a medium server. Our QtVM can run quantum assembly language with graphic interfaces. The QtVM is implemented with single qubit rotation gate, single to multiple controlled NOT gates to realize the universal quantum computation. Remarkably, it can realize a series of basic functions, such as, the "if" conditional programming language based on single-shot projective measurement results, "for" iteration programming language, build in arithmetic calculation. The measurement can be single-shot and arbitrary number of multi-shot types. In addition, there is in principle no limitation on number of logic gates implemented for quantum computation. By using QtVM, we demonstrate the simulation of dynamical quantum phase transition of transverse field Ising model by quantum circuits, where 34 qubits with one million gates are realized. We also show the realization of programmable Shor algorithm for factoring 15 and 35.
