Quantum transfer through a non-Markovian environment under frequent measurements and Zeno effect

We study transitions of a particle between two wells, separated by a reservoir, under the condition that the particle is not detected in the reservoir. Conventional quantum trajectory theory predicts that such no-result continuous measurement would not affect these transitions. We demonstrate that it holds only for Markovian reservoirs (infinite bandwidth $Λ$). In the case of finite $Λ$, the probability of the particle's interwell transition is a function of the ratio $Λ/ν$, where $ν$ is the frequency of measurements. This scaling tells us that in the limit $ν\to\infty$, the measurement freezes the initial state (the quantum Zeno effect), whereas for $Λ\to\infty$ it does not affect the particle's transition across the reservoir. The scaling is proved analytically by deriving a simple formula, which displays two regimes, with the Zeno effect and without the Zeno effect. It also supports a simple explanation of the Zeno effect entirely in terms of the energy-time uncertainty relation, with no explicit use of the projection postulate. Experimental tests of our predictions are discussed.

Hierarchical equations of motion for impurity solver in dynamical mean-field theory

A nonperturbative quantum impurity solver is proposed based on a formally exact hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) formalism for open quantum systems. It leads to quantitatively accurate evaluation of physical properties of strongly correlated electronic systems, in the framework of dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT). The HEOM method is also numerically convenient to achieve the same level of accuracy as that using the state-of-the-art numerical renormalization group impurity solver at finite temperatures. The practicality of the novel HEOM+DMFT method is demonstrated by its applications to the Hubbard models with Bethe and hypercubic lattice structures. We investigate the metal-insulator transition phenomena, and address the effects of temperature on the properties of strongly correlated lattice systems.

Improved master equation approach to quantum transport: From Born to self-consistent Born approximation

Beyond the second-order Born approximation, we develop an improved master equation approach to quantum transport by virtue of a self-consistent Born approximation. The basic idea is replacing the free Green's function in the tunneling self-energy by an effective reduced propagator under the Born approximation. We found that the effect of this simple improvement is remarkable, for instance, it can not only recover the exact result of noninteracting transport under arbitrary voltages, but also predict the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo effect. In addition to having an elegant structure, the application convenience and accuracy of the proposed scheme, as demonstrated by the examples in this work, may suggest it a useful tool for quantum transports.

Nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulation: An approach based on quantum measurement picture

Mixed-quantum-classical molecular dynamics simulation implies an effective measurement on the electronic states owing to continuously tracking the atomic forces.Based on this insight, we propose a quantum trajectory mean-field approach for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. The new protocol provides a natural interface between the separate quantum and classical treatments, without invoking artificial surface hopping algorithm. Moreover, it also bridges two widely adopted nonadiabatic dynamics methods, the Ehrenfest mean-field theory and the trajectory surface-hopping method. Excellent agreement with the exact results is illustrated with representative model systems, including the challenging ones for traditional methods.

Number-resolved master equation approach to quantum transport under the self-consistent Born approximation

We construct a particle-number(n)-resolved master equation (ME) approach under the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for quantum transport through mesoscopic systems. The formulation is essentially non-Markovian and incorporates the interlay of the multi-tunneling processes and many-body correlations. The proposed n-SCBA-ME goes completely beyond the scope of the Born-Markov master equation, being applicable to transport under small bias voltage, in non-Markovian regime and with strong Coulomb correlations. For steady state, it can recover not only the exact result of noninteracting transport under arbitrary voltages, but also the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo effect. Moreover, the n-SCBA-ME approach is efficient for the study of shot noise. We demonstrate the application by a couple of representative examples, including particularly the nonequilibrium Kondo system.

Hierarchical Liouville-space approach to nonequilibrium dynamical properties of quantum impurity systems

We propose a hierarchical dynamics approach for evaluation of nonequilibrium dynamic response properties of quantum impurity systems. It is based on a hierarchical equations of motion formalism, in conjunction with a linear response theory established in the hierarchical Liouville space. This provides an accurate and universal tool for characterization of arbitrary response and correlation functions of local impurities, as well as transport related response properties. The practicality of our proposed approach is demonstrated via the evaluation of various dynamical properties of a single-impurity Anderson model. These include the impurity spectral density, local charge fluctuation, local magnetic susceptibility, and current-voltage admittance, in both equilibrium and nonequilibrium situations. The numerical results are considered to achieve the quantitative accuracy, as long as they converge with respect to the truncation of the hierarchy.

Thermopower of few-electron quantum dots with Kondo correlations

The thermopower of few-electron quantum dots with Kondo correlations is investigated via a hierarchial equations of motion approach. The thermopower is determined by the line shape of spectral function within a narrow energy window defined by temperature. Based on calculations and analyses on single-level and two-level Anderson impurity models, the underlying relations between thermopower and various types of electron correlations are elaborated. In particular, an unconventional sign reversal behavior is predicted for quantum dots with a suitable inter-level spacing. The new feature highlights the significance of multi-level effects and their interplay with Kondo correlations. Our finding and understanding may lead to novel thermoelectric applications of quantum dots.

Inelastic transport dynamics through attractive impurity in charge Kondo regime

Within the frame of quantum dissipation theory, we develop a new hierarchical equations of motion theory, combined with the small polaron transformation. We fully investigate the electron transport of a single attractive impurity system with the strong electron-phonon coupling in charge- Kondo regime. Numerical results demonstrate the following facts: (i) The density of states curve shows that the attraction mechanism results in not only the charge-Kondo resonance (i.e. elastic pair-transition resonance), but also the inelastic pair-transition resonances and inelastic cotunneling resonances. These signals are separated discernibly in asymmetric levels about Fermi level; (ii) The differential conductance spectrum shows the distinct peaks or wiggles and the abnormal split of pair-transition peaks under the asymmetric bias; (iii) The improvement of bath-temperature can enhance the phonon-emission (absorption)-assisted sequential tunneling and also strengthen the signals of inelastic pair-transition under the asymmetric bias; (iv) The inelastic dynamics driven by the ramp-up time-dependent voltage presents clear steps which can be tailored by the duration-time and bath-temperature; (v) The linear-response spectrum obtained from the linear-response theory in the Liouville space reveals the excitation signals of electrons' dynamical transition. Briefly, the physics caused by attraction mechanism stems from the double-occupancy or vacant-occupation of impurity system

Hierarchical dynamics for system-bath coherence correlation spectrum

We propose a quasi-particle description for the hierarchical equations of motion formalism for quantum dissipative dynamics systems. Not only it provides an alternative mathematical means to the existing formalism, the new protocol clarifies also explicitly the physical meanings of the auxiliary density operators and their relations to full statistics on solvation bath variables. Combining with the standard linear response theory, we construct further the hierarchical dynamics formalism for correlated spectrum of system--bath coherence. We evaluate the spectrum matrix for a demonstrative spin-boson system-bath model. While the individual diagonal element of the spectrum matrix describes the system or the solvation bath correlation, the off-diagonal elements characterize the correlation between system and bath solvation dynamics.

Kondo memory in driven strongly-correlated quantum dots

We investigate the real-time current response of strongly-correlated quantum dot systems under sinusoidal driving voltages. By means of an accurate hierarchical equations of motion approach, we demonstrate the presence of prominent memory effects induced by the Kondo resonance on the real-time current response. These memory effects appear as distinctive hysteresis line shapes and self-crossing features in the dynamic current-voltage characteristics, with concomitant excitation of odd-number overtones. They emerge as a cooperative effect of quantum coherence - due to inductive behavior - and electron correlations - due to the Kondo resonance. We also show the suppression of memory effects and the transition to classical behavior as a function of temperature. All these phenomena can be observed in experiments and may lead to novel quantum memory applications.

Time Dependent Quantum Transport Through Graphene Nanoribbons

Time-dependent quantum transport for graphene nanoribbons (GNR) are calculated by the hierarchical equation of motion (HEOM) method based on the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) theory (Xie et.al, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 044113, 2012). In this paper, a new steady state calculation technique is introduced and accelerated by the contour integration, which is suitable for large systems. Three Lorentzian fitting schemes for the self-energy matrices are developed based on the nonlinear least square method. Within these schemes, the number of Lorentzians is effectively reduced and the fitting results are good and convergent. With these two developments in HEOM, we have calculated the transient currents in GNR. We find a new type of edge state with delta-function-like density of states in many semi-infinite armchair-type GNR.

Nonequilibrium shot noise spectrum through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime: A master equation approach under self-consistent Born approximation

We construct a number($n$)-resolved master equation (ME) approach under self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA) for noise spectrum calculation. The formulation is essentially non-Markovian and incorporates properly the interlay of the multi-tunneling processes and many-body correlations. We apply this approach to the challenging nonequilibrium Kondo system and predict a profound nonequilibrium Kondo signature in the shot noise spectrum. The proposed $n$-SCBA-ME scheme goes completely beyond the scope of the Born-Markovian master equation approach, in the sense of being applicable to the shot noise of transport under small bias voltage, in non-Markovian regime, and with strong Coulomb correlations as favorably demonstrated in the nonequilibrium Kondo system.

Undetectable quantum transfer through a continuum

We demonstrate that a quantum particle, initially prepared in a quantum well, can propagate through a reservoir with a continuous spectrum and reappear in a distant well without being registered in the reservoir. It is shown that such a passage through the reservoir takes place even if the latter is {\em continuously} monitored. We discuss a possible experimental realization of such a teleportation phenomenon in mesoscopic systems.

Hierarchical Liouville-space approach for accurate and universal characterization of quantum impurity systems

A hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) based numerical approach is developed for accurate and efficient evaluation of dynamical observables of strongly correlated quantum impurity systems. This approach is capable of describing quantitatively Kondo resonance and Fermi liquid characteristics, achieving the accuracy of latest high-level numerical renormalization group approach, as demonstrated on single-impurity Anderson model systems. Its application to a two-impurity Anderson model results in differential conductance versus external bias, which correctly reproduces the continuous transition from Kondo states of individual impurity to singlet spin-states formed between two impurities. The outstanding performance on characterizing both equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of quantum impurity systems makes the HEOM approach potentially useful for addressing strongly correlated lattice systems in the frame work of dynamical mean field theory.

Noise spectrum of quantum transport through quantum dots: a combined effect of non-Markovian and cotunneling processes

Based on our recently developed quantum transport theory in term of an exact master equation, the corresponding particle-number resolved ($n$-resolved) master equation and the related shot noise spectrum formalism covering the full frequency range are constructed. We demonstrate that the noise spectra of transport current through single quantum dot and double quantum dots show characteristic steps and/or peak-dips in different tunneling frequency regimes through tuning the applied bias voltage and/or gate voltage at low temperatures. The peak-dips crossing the tunneling resonant frequencies is a combination effect of non-Markovian and cotunneling processes. These voltage-dependent tunneling resonance characteristics can be utilized to effectively modulate the internal Rabi resonance signature in the noise spectrum.

Full counting statistics of renormalized dynamics in open quantum transport system

The internal dynamics of a double quantum dot system is renormalized due to coupling respectively with transport electrodes and a dissipative heat bath. Their essential differences are identified unambiguously in the context of full counting statistics. The electrode coupling caused level detuning renormalization gives rise to a fast-to-slow transport mechanism, which is not resolved at all in the average current, but revealed uniquely by pronounced super-Poissonian shot noise and skewness. The heat bath coupling introduces an interdot coupling renormalization, which results in asymmetric Fano factor and an intriguing change of line shape in the skewness.

The new approach is also integrated with optimized hierarchical theory and numerical filtering algorithm. Different configurations of coherent two-dimensional spectroscopy of model excitonic dimer systems are investigated, with focus on the effects of intermolecular transfer coupling and bi-exciton interaction.

Basing on the theory of Feynman's influence functional and its hierarchical equations of motion, we develop a linear response theory for quantum open systems. Our theory provides an effective way to calculate dynamical observables of a quantum open system at its steady-state, which can be applied to various fields of non-equilibrium condensed matter physics.
