Optimized hierarchical equations of motion for Drude dissipation

The hierarchical equations of motion theory for Drude dissipation is optimized, with a convenient convergence criterion proposed in advance of numerical propagations. The theoretical construction is on basis of a Padé spectrum decomposition that has been qualified to be the best sum-over-poles scheme for quantum distribution function. The resulting hierarchical dynamics under the {\em apriori} convergence criterion are exemplified with a benchmark spin-boson system, and also the transient absorption and two-dimensional spectroscopy of a model exciton dimer system.

Dynamic Quantum Tunneling in Mesoscopic Driven Duffing Oscillators

We investigate the dynamic quantum tunneling between two attractors of a mesoscopic driven Duffing oscillator. We find that, in addition to inducing remarkable quantum shift of the bifurcation point, the mesoscopic nature also results in a perfect linear scaling behavior for the tunneling rate with the driving distance to the shifted bifurcation point.

Large-deviation analysis for counting statistics in mesoscopic transports

We present an efficient approach, based on a number-conditioned master equation, for large-deviation analysis in mesoscopic transports. Beyond the conventional full-counting-statistics study, the large-deviation approach encodes complete information of both the typical trajectories and the rare ones, in terms of revealing a continuous change of the dynamical phase in trajectory space. The approach is illustrated with two examples: (i) transport through a single quantum dot, where we reveal the inhomogeneous distribution of trajectories in general case and find a particular scale invariance point in trajectory statistics; and (ii) transport through a double dots, where we find a dynamical phase transition between two distinct phases induced by the Coulomb correlation and quantum interference.

Quantifying quantum discord and entanglement of formation via unified purifications

We propose a scheme to evaluate the amount of quantum discord and entanglement of formation for mixed states, and reveal their ordering relation via an intrinsic relationship between the two quantities distributed in different partners of the associated purification. This approach enables us to achieve analytical expressions of the two measures for a sort of quantum states, such as an arbitrary two-qubit density matrix reduced from pure three-qubit states and a class of rank-2 mixed states of 4\times 2 systems. Moreover, we apply the scheme to characterize fully the dynamical behavior of quantum correlations for the specified physical systems under decoherence.

Non-Markovian shot noise spectrum of quantum transport through quantum dots

The generalized quantum master equation with transport particle number resolution, like its conventional unconditioned counterpart, has also the time-local and time-nonlocal prescriptions. The latter is found to be more suitable for the effect of electrodes bandwidth on quantum transport and noise spectrum for weak system-reservoir coupling, as calibrated with the exact results in the absence of Coulomb interaction. We further analyze the effect of Coulomb interaction on the noise spectrum of transport current through quantum dot systems, and show that the realistic finite Coulomb interaction and finite bandwidth are manifested only with non-Markovian treatment. We demonstrate a number of non-Markovian characteristics of shot noise spectrum, including that due to finite bandwidth and that sensitive to and enhanced by the magnitude of Coulomb interaction.

Real-time counting of single electron tunneling through a T-shaped double quantum dot system

Real-time detection of single electron tunneling through a T-shaped double quantum dot is simulated, based on a Monte Carlo scheme. The double dot is embedded in a dissipative environment and the presence of electrons on the double dot is detected with a nearby quantum point contact. We demonstrate directly the bunching behavior in electron transport, which leads eventually to a super-Poissonian noise. Particularly, in the context of full counting statistics, we investigate the essential difference between the dephasing mechanisms induced by the quantum point contact detection and the coupling to the external phonon bath. A number of intriguing noise features associated with various transport mechanisms are revealed.

Statistically consistent coarse-grained simulations for critical phenomena in complex networks

We propose a degree-based coarse graining approach that not just accelerates the evaluation of dynamics on complex networks, but also satisfies the consistency conditions for both equilibrium statistical distributions and nonequilibrium dynamical flows. For the Ising model and susceptible-infected-susceptible epidemic model, we introduce these required conditions explicitly and further prove that they are satisfied by our coarse-grained network construction within the annealed network approximation. Finally, we numerically show that the phase transitions and fluctuations on the coarse-grained network are all in good agreements with those on the original one.

Time-dependent density functional theory for quantum transport

Based on our earlier works [Phys. Rev. B 75, 195127 (2007) & J. Chem. Phys. 128, 234703 (2008)], we propose a formally exact and numerically convenient approach to simulate time-dependent quantum transport from first-principles. The proposed approach combines time-dependent density functional theory with quantum dissipation theory, and results in a useful tool for studying transient dynamics of electronic systems. Within the proposed exact theoretical framework, we construct a number of practical schemes for simulating realistic systems such as nanoscopic electronic devices. Computational cost of each scheme is analyzed, with the expected level of accuracy discussed. As a demonstration, a simulation based on the adiabatic wide-band limit approximation scheme is carried out to characterize the transient current response of a carbon nanotube based electronic device under time-dependent external voltages.

A nonequilibrium theory for transient transport dynamics in nanostructures via the Feynman-Vernon influence functional approach

In this paper, we develop a nonequilibrium theory for transient electron transport dynamics in nanostructures based on the Feynman-Vernon influence functional approach. We extend our previous work on the exact master equation describing the non-Markovian electron dynamics in the double dot [Phys. Rev. B78, 235311 (2008)] to the nanostructures in which the energy levels of the central region, the couplings to the leads and the external biases applied to leads are all time-dependent. We then derive nonperturbatively the exact transient current in terms of the reduced density matrix within the same framework. This provides an exact non-linear response theory for quantum transport processes with back-reaction effect from the contacts, including the non-Markovian quantum relaxation and dephasing, being fully taken into account. The nonequilibrium steady-state transport theory based on the Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green function technique can be recovered as a long time limit. For a simple application, we present the analytical and numerical results of transient dynamics for the resonance tunneling nanoscale device with a Lorentzian-type spectral density and ac bias voltages, where the non-Markovian memory structure and non-linear response to the bias voltages in transport processes are demonstrated.

Hierarchical theory of quantum dissipation: Partial fraction decomposition scheme

We propose a partial fraction decomposition scheme to the construction of hierarchical equations of motion theory for bosonic quantum dissipation systems. The expansion of Bose--Einstein function in this scheme shows similar properties as it applies for Fermi function. The performance of the resulting quantum dissipation theory is exemplified with spin--boson systems. In all cases we have tested the new theory performs much better, about an order of magnitude faster, than the best available conventional theory based on Matsubara spectral decomposition scheme.

Hierarchical quantum master equation with semiclassical Drude dissipation

We propose a nonperturbative quantum dissipation theory, in term of hierarchical quantum master equation. It may be used with a great degree of confidence to various dynamics systems in condensed phases. The theoretical development is rooted in an improved semiclassical treatment of Drude bath, beyond the conventional high temperature approximations. It leads to the new theory a simple modification but important improvement over the conventional stochastic Liouville equation theory, without extra numerical cost. Its broad range of validity and applicability is extensively demonstrated with two--level electron transfer model systems, where the new theory can be considered as the modified Zusman equation. We also present a criterion, which depends only on the system--bath coupling strength, characteristic bath memory time, and temperature, to estimate the performance of the hierarchical quantum master equation.

Spin-dependent current noises in transport through coupled quantum dots

Current fluctuations can provide additional insight into quantum transport in mesoscopic systems. The present work is carried out for the fluctuation properties of transport through a pair of coupled quantum dots which are connected with ferromagnetic electrodes. Based on an efficient particle-number-resolved master equation approach, we are concerned with not only fluctuations of the total charge and spin currents, but also of each individual spin-dependent component. As a result of competition among the spin polarization, Coulomb interaction, and dot-dot tunnel coupling, rich behaviors are found for the self- and mutual-correlation functions of the spin-dependent currents.

Reduced dynamics with renormalization in solid-state charge qubit measurement

Quantum measurement will inevitably cause backaction on the measured system, resulting in the well known dephasing and relaxation. In this report, in the context of solid--state qubit measurement by a mesoscopic detector, we show that an alternative backaction known as renormalization is important under some circumstances. This effect is largely overlooked in the theory of quantum measurement.

Non-Markovian theory for the waiting time distributions of single electron transfers

We derive a non-Markovian theory for waiting time distributions of consecutive single electron transfer events. The presented microscopic Pauli rate equation formalism couples the open electrodes to the many-body system, allowing to take finite bias and temperature into consideration. Numerical results reveal transient oscillations of distinct system frequencies due to memory in the waiting time distributions. Memory effects can be approximated by an expansion in non-Markovian corrections. This method is employed to calculate memory landscapes displaying preservation of memory over multiple consecutive electron transfers.

Exact quantum dissipative dynamics under external time-dependent fields driving

Exact and nonperturbative quantum master equation can be constructed via the calculus on path integral. It results in hierarchical equations of motion for the reduced density operator. Involved are also a set of well--defined auxiliary density operators that resolve not just system--bath coupling strength but also memory. In this work, we scale these auxiliary operators individually to achieve a uniform error tolerance, as set by the reduced density operator. An efficient propagator is then proposed to the hierarchical Liouville--space dynamics of quantum dissipation. Numerically exact studies are carried out on the dephasing effect on population transfer in the simple stimulated Raman adiabatic passage scheme. We also make assessments on several perturbative theories for their applicabilities in the present system of study.

Exact dynamics of driven Brownian oscillators

Exact quantum master equation for a driven Brownian oscillator system is constructed via a Wigner phase-space Gaussian wave packet approach. The interplay between external field and dissipation leads to this system an effective field correction that enhances the polarization. This cooperative property is resulted from an effective bath response to the external field applied on the system. It is important in the low-frequency driving and intermediate bath memory region. We demonstrate this non-Markovian effect on the linear response and nonlinear dynamics and analyze the results together with analytical asymptotic expressions.

Dynamic Coulomb blockade in single-lead quantum dots

We investigate transient dynamic response of an Anderson impurity quantum dot to a family of ramp-up driving voltage applied to the single coupling lead. Transient current is calculated based on a hierarchical equations of motion formalism for open dissipative systems [J. Chem. Phys. 128, 234703 (2008)]. In the nonlinear response and nonadiabatic charging regime, characteristic resonance features of transient response current reveal distinctly and faithfully the energetic configuration of the quantum dot. We also discuss and comment on both the physical and numerical aspects of the theoretical formalism used in this work.

Theoretical investigation of the dynamic electronic response of a quantum dot driven by time-dependent voltage

We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation on the dynamic electronic response of a noninteracting quantum dot system to various forms of time-dependent voltage applied to the single contact lead. Numerical simulations are carried out by implementing a recently developed hierarchical equations of motion formalism [J. Chem. Phys. 128, 234703 (2008)], which is formally exact for a fermionic system interacting with grand canonical fermionic reservoirs, in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent applied chemical potentials. The dynamical characteristics of the transient transport current evaluated in both linear and nonlinear response regimes are analyzed, and the equivalent classic circuit corresponding to the coupled dot-lead system is also discussed.
