Fine-tuning Graph Neural Networks by Preserving Graph Generative Patterns

Recently, the paradigm of pre-training and fine-tuning graph neural networks has been intensively studied and applied in a wide range of graph mining tasks. Its success is generally attributed to the structural consistency between pre-training and downstream datasets, which, however, does not hold in many real-world scenarios. Existing works have shown that the structural divergence between pre-training and downstream graphs significantly limits the transferability when using the vanilla fine-tuning strategy. This divergence leads to model overfitting on pre-training graphs and causes difficulties in capturing the structural properties of the downstream graphs. In this paper, we identify the fundamental cause of structural divergence as the discrepancy of generative patterns between the pre-training and downstream graphs. Furthermore, we propose G-Tuning to preserve the generative patterns of downstream graphs. Given a downstream graph G, the core idea is to tune the pre-trained GNN so that it can reconstruct the generative patterns of G, the graphon W. However, the exact reconstruction of a graphon is known to be computationally expensive. To overcome this challenge, we provide a theoretical analysis that establishes the existence of a set of alternative graphons called graphon bases for any given graphon. By utilizing a linear combination of these graphon bases, we can efficiently approximate W. This theoretical finding forms the basis of our proposed model, as it enables effective learning of the graphon bases and their associated coefficients. Compared with existing algorithms, G-Tuning demonstrates an average improvement of 0.5% and 2.6% on in-domain and out-of-domain transfer learning experiments, respectively.

Operando real-space imaging of a structural phase transformation in a high-voltage electrode

Discontinuous solid-solid phase transformations play a pivotal role in determining properties of rechargeable battery electrodes. By leveraging operando Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging (BCDI), we investigate the discontinuous phase transformation in LixNi0.5Mn1.5O4 within a fully operational battery. Throughout Li-intercalation, we directly observe the nucleation and growth of the Li-rich phase within the initially charged Li-poor phase in a 500 nm particle. Supported by the microelasticity model, the operando imaging unveils an evolution from a curved coherent to planar semi-coherent interface driven by dislocation dynamics. We hypothesize these dislocations exhibit a glissile motion that facilitates interface migration without diffusion of host ions, leaving the particle defect-free post-transformation. Our data indicates negligible kinetic limitations impacting the transformation kinetics, even at discharge rates as fast as C/2. This study underscores BCDI's capability to provide operando insights into nanoscale phase transformations, offering valuable guidance for electrochemical materials design and optimization.

Dynamic Uploading Scheduling in mmWave-Based Sensor Networks via Mobile Blocker Detection

The freshness of information, measured as Age of Information (AoI), is critical for many applications in next-generation wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Due to its high bandwidth, millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is seen to be frequently exploited in WSNs to facilitate the deployment of bandwidth-demanding applications. However, the vulnerability of mmWave to user mobility typically results in link blockage and thus postponed real-time communications. In this paper, joint sampling and uploading scheduling in an AoI-oriented WSN working in mmWave band is considered, where a single human blocker is moving randomly and signal propagation paths may be blocked. The locations of signal reflectors and the real-time position of the blocker can be detected via wireless sensing technologies. With the knowledge of blocker motion pattern, the statistics of future wireless channels can be predicted. As a result, the AoI degradation arising from link blockage can be forecast and mitigated. Specifically, we formulate the long-term sampling, uplink transmission time and power allocation as an infinite-horizon Markov decision process (MDP) with discounted cost. Due to the curse of dimensionality, the optimal solution is infeasible. A novel low-complexity solution framework with guaranteed performance in the worst case is proposed where the forecast of link blockage is exploited in a value function approximation. Simulations show that compared with several heuristic benchmarks, our proposed policy, benefiting from the awareness of link blockage, can reduce average cost up to 49.6%.

SST: A Simplified Swin Transformer-based Model for Taxi Destination Prediction based on Existing Trajectory

Accurately predicting the destination of taxi trajectories can have various benefits for intelligent location-based services. One potential method to accomplish this prediction is by converting the taxi trajectory into a two-dimensional grid and using computer vision techniques. While the Swin Transformer is an innovative computer vision architecture with demonstrated success in vision downstream tasks, it is not commonly used to solve real-world trajectory problems. In this paper, we propose a simplified Swin Transformer (SST) structure that does not use the shifted window idea in the traditional Swin Transformer, as trajectory data is consecutive in nature. Our comprehensive experiments, based on real trajectory data, demonstrate that SST can achieve higher accuracy compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Direct Implementation with Evidence

We study full implementation with evidence in an environment with bounded utilities. We show that a social choice function is Nash implementable in a direct revelation mechanism if and only if it satisfies the measurability condition proposed by BL2012 . Building on a novel classification of lies according to their refutability with evidence, the mechanism requires only two agents, accounts for mixed-strategy equilibria and accommodates evidentiary costs. While monetary transfers are used, they are off the equilibrium and can be balanced with three or more agents. In a richer model of evidence due to KT2012 , we establish pure-strategy implementation with two or more agents in a direct revelation mechanism. We also obtain a necessary and sufficient condition on the evidence structure for renegotiation-proof bilateral contracts, based on the classification of lies.

Statistical inference for counting processes under shape heterogeneity

Proportional rate models are among the most popular methods for analyzing the rate function of counting processes. Although providing a straightforward rate-ratio interpretation of covariate effects, the proportional rate assumption implies that covariates do not modify the shape of the rate function. When such an assumption does not hold, we propose describing the relationship between the rate function and covariates through two indices: the shape index and the size index. The shape index allows the covariates to flexibly affect the shape of the rate function, and the size index retains the interpretability of covariate effects on the magnitude of the rate function. To overcome the challenges in simultaneously estimating the two sets of parameters, we propose a conditional pseudolikelihood approach to eliminate the size parameters in shape estimation and an event count projection approach for size estimation. The proposed estimators are asymptotically normal with a root-$n$ convergence rate. Simulation studies and an analysis of recurrent hospitalizations using SEER-Medicare data are conducted to illustrate the proposed methods.

Picosecond volume expansion drives a later-time insulator-metal transition in a nano-textured Mott Insulator

Technology moves towards ever faster switching between different electronic and magnetic states of matter. Manipulating properties at terahertz rates requires accessing the intrinsic timescales of electrons (femtoseconds) and associated phonons (10s of femtoseconds to few picoseconds), which is possible with short-pulse photoexcitation. Yet, in many Mott insulators, the electronic transition is accompanied by the nucleation and growth of percolating domains of the changed lattice structure, leading to empirical time scales dominated by slow coarsening dynamics. Here, we use time-resolved X-ray diffraction and reflectivity measurements to investigate the photoinduced insulator-to-metal transition in an epitaxially strained thin film Mott insulator Ca2RuO4. The dynamical transition occurs without observable domain formation and coarsening effects, allowing the study of the intrinsic electronic and lattice dynamics. Above a fluence threshold, the initial electronic excitation drives a fast lattice rearrangement, followed by a slower electronic evolution into a metastable non-equilibrium state. Microscopic calculations based on time-dependent dynamical mean-field theory and semiclassical lattice dynamics within a recently published equilibrium energy landscape picture explain the threshold-behavior and elucidate the delayed onset of the electronic phase transition in terms of kinematic constraints on recombination. Analysis of satellite scattering peaks indicates the persistence of a strain-induced nano-texture in the photoexcited film. This work highlights the importance of combined electronic and structural studies to unravel the physics of dynamic transitions and elucidates the role of strain in tuning the timescales of photoinduced processes.

Predictive Resource Allocation in mmWave Systems with Rotation Detection

Millimeter wave (MmWave) has been regarded as a promising technology to support high-capacity communications in 5G era. However, its high-layer performance such as latency and packet drop rate in the long term highly depends on resource allocation because mmWave channel suffers significant fluctuation with rotating users due to mmWave sparse channel property and limited field-of-view (FoV) of antenna arrays. In this paper, downlink transmission scheduling considering rotation of user equipments (UE) and limited antenna FoV in an mmWave system is optimized via a novel approximate Markov decision process (MDP) method. Specifically, we consider the joint downlink UE selection and power allocation in a number of frames where future orientations of rotating UEs can be predicted via embedded motion sensors. The problem is formulated as a finite-horizon MDP with non-stationary state transition probabilities. A novel low-complexity solution framework is proposed via one iteration step over a base policy whose average future cost can be predicted with analytical expressions. It is demonstrated by simulations that compared with existing benchmarks, the proposed scheme can schedule the downlink transmission and suppress the packet drop rate efficiently in non-stationary mmWave links.

mmAlert: mmWave Link Blockage Prediction via Passive Sensing

In this letter, the mmAlert system, predicting millimeter wave (mmWave) link blockage during data communication, is elaborated and demonstrated. The passive sensing method is adopted for mobile blocker detection, where two receive beams with separated radio frequency (RF) chains are equipped at the data communication receiver. One receive beam is aligned to the direction of line-of-sight (LoS) path, and the other one periodically sweeps the region close to the LoS path. By comparing the signals received by the above two beams, the Doppler frequencies of the signal scattered from the mobile blocker can be detected. Furthermore, by tracking the Doppler frequencies and the angle-of-arrivals (AoAs) of the scattered signals, the trajectory of the mobile blocker can be estimated, such that the potential link blockage can be predicted by assuming consistent mobile velocity. It is demonstrated via experiments that the mmAlert system can always detect the motions of the walking person close to the LoS path, and predict 90\% of the LoS blockage with sensing time of 1.4 seconds.

An Indoor Environment Sensing and Localization System via mmWave Phased Array

An indoor layout sensing and localization system in 60GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) band, named mmReality, is elaborated in this paper. The mmReality system consists of one transmitter and one mobile receiver, each with a phased array and a single radio frequency (RF) chain. To reconstruct the room layout, the pilot signal is delivered from the transmitter to the receiver via different pairs of transmission and receiving beams, so that the signals at all antenna elements can be resolved. Then, the spatial smoothing and two-dimensional multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm is applied to detect the angle-of-arrival (AoAs) and angle-of-departure (AoDs) of the rays from the transmitter to the receiver. Moreover, the technique of multi-carrier ranging is adopted to measure the distance of each propagation path. Synthesizing the above geometrical parameters, the location of receiver relative to the transmitter can be pinpointed, both line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) paths can also be determined. Therefore, the room layout can be reconstructed by moving the receiver and repeating the above measurement in different locations of the room. At the end, we show that the reconstructed room layout can be utilized to locate a mobile device according to its AoA spectrum, even with single access point.

Hybrid Censored Quantile Regression Forest to Assess the Heterogeneous Effects

In many applications, heterogeneous treatment effects on a censored response variable are of primary interest, and it is natural to evaluate the effects at different quantiles (e.g., median). The large number of potential effect modifiers, the unknown structure of the treatment effects, and the presence of right censoring pose significant challenges. In this paper, we develop a hybrid forest approach called Hybrid Censored Quantile Regression Forest (HCQRF) to assess the heterogeneous effects varying with high-dimensional variables. The hybrid estimation approach takes advantage of the random forests and the censored quantile regression. We propose a doubly-weighted estimation procedure that consists of a redistribution-of-mass weight to handle censoring and an adaptive nearest neighbor weight derived from the forest to handle high-dimensional effect functions. We propose a variable importance decomposition to measure the impact of a variable on the treatment effect function. Extensive simulation studies demonstrate the efficacy and stability of HCQRF. The result of the simulation study also convinces us of the effectiveness of the variable importance decomposition. We apply HCQRF to a clinical trial of colorectal cancer. We achieve insightful estimations of the treatment effect and meaningful variable importance results. The result of the variable importance also confirms the necessity of the decomposition.

Remapped Cache Layout: Thwarting Cache-Based Side-Channel Attacks with a Hardware Defense

As cache-based side-channel attacks become serious security problems, various defenses have been proposed and deployed in both software and hardware. Consequently, cache-based side-channel attacks on processes co-residing on the same core are becoming extremely difficult. Most of recent attacks then shift their focus to the last-level cache (LLC). Although cache partitioning is currently the most promising defense against the attacks abusing LLC, it is ineffective in thwarting the side-channel attacks that automatically create eviction sets or bypass the user address space layout randomization. In fact, these attacks are largely undefended in current computer systems. We propose Remapped Cache Layout (\textsf{RCL}) -- a pure hardware defense against a broad range of conflict-based side-channel attacks. \textsf{RCL} obfuscates the mapping from address to cache sets; therefore, an attacker cannot accurately infer the location of her data in caches or using a cache set to infer her victim's data. To our best knowledge, it is the first defense to thwart the aforementioned largely undefended side-channel attacks . \textsf{RCL} has been implemented in a superscalar processor and detailed evaluation results show that \textsf{RCL} incurs only small costs in area, frequency and execution time.

Dynamic Risk Prediction Triggered by Intermediate Events Using Survival Tree Ensembles

With the availability of massive amounts of data from electronic health records and registry databases, incorporating time-varying patient information to improve risk prediction has attracted great attention. To exploit the growing amount of predictor information over time, we develop a unified framework for landmark prediction using survival tree ensembles, where an updated prediction can be performed when new information becomes available. Compared to conventional landmark prediction with fixed landmark times, our methods allow the landmark times to be subject-specific and triggered by an intermediate clinical event. Moreover, the nonparametric approach circumvents the thorny issue of model incompatibility at different landmark times. In our framework, both the longitudinal predictors and the event time outcome are subject to right censoring, and thus existing tree-based approaches cannot be directly applied. To tackle the analytical challenges, we propose a risk-set-based ensemble procedure by averaging martingale estimating equations from individual trees. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to evaluate the performance of our methods. The methods are applied to the Cystic Fibrosis Patient Registry (CFFPR) data to perform dynamic prediction of lung disease in cystic fibrosis patients and to identify important prognosis factors.

Energy-efficient transmission policies for the linear quadratic control of scalar systems

This paper considers controlled scalar systems relying on a lossy wireless feedback channel. In contrast with the existing literature, the focus is not on the system controller but on the wireless transmit power controller that is implemented at the system side for reporting the state to the controller. Such a problem may be of interest, \emph{e.g.}, for the remote control of drones, where communication costs may have to be considered. Determining the power control policy that minimizes the combination of the dynamical system cost and the wireless transmission energy is shown to be a non-trivial optimization problem. It turns out that the recursive structure of the problem can be exploited to determine the optimal power control policy. As illustrated in the numerical performance analysis, in the scenario of a dynamics without perturbations, the optimal power control policy consists in decreasing the transmit power at the right pace. This allows a significant performance gain compared to conventional policies such as the full transmit power policy or the open-loop policy.

Wavelength-by-wavelength temperature-independent thermal radiation utilizing an insulator-metal transition

Both the magnitude and spectrum of the blackbody-radiation distribution change with temperature. Here, we designed the temperature-dependent spectral emissivity of a coating to counteract all the changes in the blackbody-radiation distribution over a certain temperature range, enabled by the nonhysteretic insulator-to-metal phase transition of SmNiO3. At each wavelength within the long-wave infrared atmospheric-transparency window, the thermal radiance of our coating remains nearly constant over a temperature range of at least 20 °C. Our approach can conceal thermal gradients and transient temperature changes from infrared imaging systems, including those that discriminate by wavelength, such as multispectral and hyperspectral cameras.

Who is next: rising star prediction via diffusion of user interest in social networks

Finding items with potential to increase sales is of great importance in online market. In this paper, we propose to study this novel and practical problem: rising star prediction. We call these potential items Rising Star, which implies their ability to rise from low-turnover items to best-sellers in the future. Rising stars can be used to help with unfair recommendation in e-commerce platform, balance supply and demand to benefit the retailers and allocate marketing resources rationally. Although the study of rising star can bring great benefits, it also poses challenges to us. The sales trend of rising star fluctuates sharply in the short-term and exhibits more contingency caused by some external events (e.g., COVID-19 caused increasing purchase of the face mask) than other items, which cannot be solved by existing sales prediction methods. To address above challenges, in this paper, we observe that the presence of rising stars is closely correlated with the early diffusion of user interest in social networks, which is validated in the case of Taocode (an intermediary that diffuses user interest in Taobao). Thus, we propose a novel framework, RiseNet, to incorporate the user interest diffusion process with the item dynamic features to effectively predict rising stars. Specifically, we adopt a coupled mechanism to capture the dynamic interplay between items and user interest, and a special designed GNN based framework to quantify user interest. Our experimental results on large-scale real-world datasets provided by Taobao demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed framework.

Passive Motion Detection via mmWave Communication System

In this paper, an integrated passive sensing and communication system working in 60 GHz band is elaborated, and the sensing performance is investigated in an application of hand gesture recognition. Specifically, in this integrated system, there are two radio frequency (RF) chains at the receiver and one at the transmitter. Each RF chain is connected with one phased array for analog beamforming. To facilitate simultaneous sensing and communication, the transmitter delivers one stream of information-bearing signals via two beam lobes, one is aligned with the main signal propagation path and the other is directed to the sensing target. Signals from the two lobes are received by the two RF chains at the receiver, respectively. By cross ambiguity coherent processing, the time-Doppler spectrograms of hand gestures can be obtained. Relying on the passive sensing system, a dataset of received signals, where three types of hand gestures are sensed, is collected by using Line-of-Sight (LoS) and Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) paths as the reference channel respectively. Then a neural network is trained by the dataset for motion detection. It is shown that the classification accuracy rate is high as long as sufficient sensing time is assured. Finally, an empirical model characterizing the relation between the classification accuracy and sensing duration is derived analytically.

Strain-induced orbital energy shift in antiferromagnetic RuO2 revealed by resonant elastic x-ray scattering

In its ground state, RuO2 was long thought to be an ordinary metallic paramagnet. Recent neutron and x-ray diffraction revealed that bulk RuO2 is an antiferromagnet (AFM) with TN above 300 K. Furthermore, epitaxial strain induces novel superconductivity in thin films of RuO2 below 2 K. Here, we present a resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS) study at the Ru L2 edge of the strained RuO2 films exhibiting the strain-induced superconductivity. We observe an azimuthal modulation of the 100 Bragg peak consistent with canted AFM found in bulk. Most notably, in the strained films displaying novel superconductivity, we observe a ~1 eV shift of the Ru eg orbitals to a higher energy. The energy shift is smaller in thicker, relaxed films and films with a different strain direction. Our results provide further evidence of the utility of epitaxial strain as a tuning parameter in complex oxides.
