Maskin Meets Abreu and Matsushima

The theory of full implementation has been criticized for using integer/modulo games which admit no equilibrium (Jackson (1992)). To address the critique, we revisit the classical Nash implementation problem due to Maskin (1999) but allow for the use of lotteries and monetary transfers as in Abreu and Matsushima (1992, 1994). We unify the two well-established but somewhat orthogonal approaches in full implementation theory. We show that Maskin monotonicity is a necessary and sufficient condition for (exact) mixed-strategy Nash implementation by a finite mechanism. In contrast to previous papers, our approach possesses the following features: finite mechanisms (with no integer or modulo game) are used; mixed strategies are handled explicitly; neither undesirable outcomes nor transfers occur in equilibrium; the size of transfers can be made arbitrarily small; and our mechanism is robust to information perturbations. Finally, our result can be extended to infinite/continuous settings and ordinal settings.

In-situ non-equilibrium nanomechanics in a proton-conducting ceramic at low temperatures

Nanostructured proton-conducting ceramics (PCCs) have attracted considerable interest as moderate-temperature proton conductors. Structure dynamics during proton conduction, particularly at grain boundaries, are crucial for stability and proton transport in nanostructured PCCs. A common assumption is that PCCs are structurally stable at low operating temperatures; however, material polycrystallinity, absorption, and reactive operating conditions have so far prevented verifying this assumption by nano resolved in-situ structure measurements. Here, in an archetypal PCC BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-d the premise of structural stability is demonstrated to be inaccurate at temperatures as low as 200 °C. Coherent X-ray diffraction on a nanostructured BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-d sintered pellet is adapted to image in-situ three-dimensional structural processes inside the constituent submicron grains in a humid nitrogen atmosphere at 200 °C. Direct observation reveals non-equilibrium defect generation and subsequent grain cracking on a timescale of hours, forming new, otherwise energetically unfavorable facets in BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-d. Furthermore, the structural rearrangements correlate with dynamic inhomogeneities of the lattice constant within the grains, showing potential heterogeneous H+ transport. Our results elucidate the mechanisms behind PCCs structural degradation, overturn existing assumptions about the structure dynamics in PCCs, and fill a method gap for further in-depth in-situ studies of the PCC nanostructure.

Improving Factual Consistency of Abstractive Summarization on Customer Feedback

E-commerce stores collect customer feedback to let sellers learn about customer concerns and enhance customer order experience. Because customer feedback often contains redundant information, a concise summary of the feedback can be generated to help sellers better understand the issues causing customer dissatisfaction. Previous state-of-the-art abstractive text summarization models make two major types of factual errors when producing summaries from customer feedback, which are wrong entity detection (WED) and incorrect product-defect description (IPD). In this work, we introduce a set of methods to enhance the factual consistency of abstractive summarization on customer feedback. We augment the training data with artificially corrupted summaries, and use them as counterparts of the target summaries. We add a contrastive loss term into the training objective so that the model learns to avoid certain factual errors. Evaluation results show that a large portion of WED and IPD errors are alleviated for BART and T5. Furthermore, our approaches do not depend on the structure of the summarization model and thus are generalizable to any abstractive summarization systems.

Advantages of a semi-implicit scheme over a fully implicit scheme for Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation

Magnetization dynamics in magnetic materials is modeled by the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation. In the LLG equation, the length of magnetization is conserved and the system energy is dissipative. Implicit and semi-implicit schemes have been used in micromagnetics simulations due to their unconditional numerical stability. In more details, implicit schemes preserve the properties of the LLG equation, but solve a nonlinear system of equations per time step. In contrast, semi-implicit schemes only solve a linear system of equations, while additional operations are needed to preserve the length of magnetization. It still remains unclear which one shall be used if both implicit and semi-implicit schemes are available. In this work, using the implicit Crank-Nicolson (ICN) scheme as a benchmark, we propose to make this implicit scheme semi-implicit. It can be proved that both schemes are second-order accurate in space and time. For the unique solvability of nonlinear systems of equations in the ICN scheme, we require that the temporal step size scales quadratically with the spatial mesh size. It is numerically verified that the convergence of the nonlinear solver becomes slower for larger temporal step size and multiple magnetization profiles are obtained for different initial guesses. The linear systems of equations in the semi-implicit CN (SICN) scheme are unconditionally uniquely solvable, and the condition that the temporal step size scales linearly with the spatial mesh size is needed in the convergence of the SICN scheme. In terms of numerical efficiency, the SICN scheme achieves the same accuracy as the ICN scheme with less computational time. Based on these results, we conclude that a semi-implicit scheme is superior to its implicit analog both theoretically and numerically, and we recommend the semi-implicit scheme in micromagnetics simulations if both methods are available.

Effective reduction of PdCoO2 thin films via hydrogenation and sign tunable anomalous Hall effect

PdCoO2 , belonging to a family of triangular oxides called delafossite, is one of the most conducting oxides. Its in-plane conductivity is comparable to those of the best metals, and exhibits hydrodynamic electronic transport with extremely long mean free path at cryogenic temperatures. Nonetheless, it is nonmagnetic despite the presence of the cobalt ion. Here, we show that a mild hydrogenation process reduces PdCoO2 thin films to an atomically-mixed alloy of PdCo with strong out-of-plane ferromagnetism and sign-tunable anomalous Hall effect. Considering that many other compounds remain little affected under a similar hydrogenation condition, this discovery may provide a route to creating novel spintronic heterostructures combining strong ferromagnetism, involving oxides and other functional materials.

Universal phase dynamics in VO2 switches revealed by ultrafast operando diffraction

Strongly correlated materials that exhibit an insulator-metal transition are key candidates in the search for new computing platforms. Understanding the pathways and timescales underlying the electrically-driven insulator-metal transition is crucial for uncovering the fundamental limits of device operation. Using stroboscopic electron diffraction, we perform synchronized time-resolved measurements of atomic motions and electronic transport in operating vanadium dioxide switches. We discover an electrically-triggered, isostructural state that forms transiently on microsecond timescales, stabilized by local heterogeneities and interfacial interactions between the equilibrium phases. This metastable phase bears striking similarity to that formed under photoexcitation within picoseconds, suggesting a universal transformation pathway across eight orders of magnitude of timescale. Our results establish a new route for uncovering non-equilibrium and metastable phases in correlated materials, and open avenues for engineering novel dynamical behavior in nanoelectronics.

X-ray nanoimaging of crystal defects in single grains of solid-state electrolyte AlxLi7-3xLa3Zr2O12

All-solid-state lithium batteries promise significant improvements in energy density and safety over traditional liquid electrolyte batteries. The Al-doped AlxLi7-3xLa3Zr2O12 (LLZO) solid-state electrolyte shows excellent potential given its high ionic conductivity and good thermal, chemical, and electrochemical stability. Nevertheless, further improvements on LLZOs electrochemical and mechanical properties call for an incisive understanding of its local microstructure. Here, we employ Bragg Coherent Diffractive Imaging to investigate the atomic displacements inside single grains of LLZO with various Al-doping concentrations, resulting in cubic, tetragonal, and cubic-tetragonal mixed structures. We observe coexisting domains of different crystallographic orientations in the tetragonal structure. We further show that Al doping leads to crystal defects such as dislocations and phase boundary in the mixed- and cubic-phase grain. This study addresses the effect of Al-doping on the nanoscale structure within individual grains of LLZO, which is informative for the future development of solid-state batteries.

A New Approach of Data Pre-processing for Data Compression in Smart Grids

The conventional approach to pre-process data for compression is to apply transforms such as the Fourier, the Karhunen-Loève, or wavelet transforms. One drawback from adopting such an approach is that it is independent of the use of the compressed data, which may induce significant optimality losses when measured in terms of final utility (instead of being measured in terms of distortion). We therefore revisit this paradigm by tayloring the data pre-processing operation to the utility function of the decision-making entity using the compressed (and therefore noisy) data. More specifically, the utility function consists of an Lp-norm, which is very relevant in the area of smart grids. Both a linear and a non-linear use-oriented transforms are designed and compared with conventional data pre-processing techniques, showing that the impact of compression noise can be significantly reduced.

SISTA: learning optimal transport costs under sparsity constraints

In this paper, we describe a novel iterative procedure called SISTA to learn the underlying cost in optimal transport problems. SISTA is a hybrid between two classical methods, coordinate descent ("S"-inkhorn) and proximal gradient descent ("ISTA"). It alternates between a phase of exact minimization over the transport potentials and a phase of proximal gradient descent over the parameters of the transport cost. We prove that this method converges linearly, and we illustrate on simulated examples that it is significantly faster than both coordinate descent and ISTA. We apply it to estimating a model of migration, which predicts the flow of migrants using country-specific characteristics and pairwise measures of dissimilarity between countries. This application demonstrates the effectiveness of machine learning in quantitative social sciences.

Sudden collapse of magnetic order in oxygen deficient nickelate films

Oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in the control of the electronic, magnetic, ionic, and transport properties of functional oxide perovskites. Rare earth nickelates (RENiO$_{3-x}$) have emerged over the years as a rich platform to study the interplay between the lattice, the electronic structure, and ordered magnetism. In this study, we investigate the evolution of the electronic and magnetic structure in thin films of RENiO$_{3-x}$, using a combination of X-ray absorption spectroscopy and imaging, resonant X-ray scattering, and extended multiplet ligand field theory modeling. We find that oxygen vacancies modify the electronic configuration within the Ni-O orbital manifolds, leading to a dramatic evolution of long-range electronic transport pathways despite the absence of nanoscale phase separation. Remarkably, magnetism is robust to substantial levels of carrier doping, and only a moderate weakening of the $(1/4, 1/4, 1/4)_{pc}$ antiferromagnetic order parameter is observed, whereas the magnetic transition temperature is largely unchanged. Only at a certain point long-range magnetism is abruptly erased without an accompanying structural transition. We propose the progressive disruption of the 3D magnetic superexchange pathways upon introduction of point defects as the mechanism behind the sudden collapse of magnetic order in oxygen-deficient nickelates. Our work demonstrates that, unlike most other oxides, ordered magnetism in RENiO$_{3-x}$ is mostly insensitive to carrier doping. The sudden collapse of ordered magnetism upon oxygen removal may provide a new mechanism for solid-state magneto-ionic switching and new applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics.

A simple stress-dilatancy equation for sand

The stress-dilatancy relation is of critical importance for constitutive modelling of sand. A new fractional-order stress-dilatancy equation is analytically developed in this study, based on stress-fractional operators. An apparent linear response of the stress-dilatancy behaviour of soil after sufficient shearing is obtained. As the fractional order varies, the derived stress-dilatancy curve and the associated phase transformation state stress ratio shift. But, unlike existing researches, no other specific parameters, except the fractional order, concerning such shift and the state-dependence are required. The developed stress-dilatancy equation is then incorporated into an existing constitutive model for validation. Test results of different sands are simulated and compared, where a good model performance is observed.

Recurrent Events Analysis With Data Collected at Informative Clinical Visits in Electronic Health Records

Although increasingly used as a data resource for assembling cohorts, electronic health records (EHRs) pose many analytic challenges. In particular, a patient's health status influences when and what data are recorded, generating sampling bias in the collected data. In this paper, we consider recurrent event analysis using EHR data. Conventional regression methods for event risk analysis usually require the values of covariates to be observed throughout the follow-up period. In EHR databases, time-dependent covariates are intermittently measured during clinical visits, and the timing of these visits is informative in the sense that it depends on the disease course. Simple methods, such as the last-observation-carried-forward approach, can lead to biased estimation. On the other hand, complex joint models require additional assumptions on the covariate process and cannot be easily extended to handle multiple longitudinal predictors. By incorporating sampling weights derived from estimating the observation time process, we develop a novel estimation procedure based on inverse-rate-weighting and kernel-smoothing for the semiparametric proportional rate model of recurrent events. The proposed methods do not require model specifications for the covariate processes and can easily handle multiple time-dependent covariates. Our methods are applied to a kidney transplant study for illustration.

Effects of free-ranging livestock on sympatric herbivores at fine spatiotemporal scales

Understanding wildlife-livestock interactions is crucial for the design and management of protected areas that aim to conserve large mammal communities undergoing conflicts with humans worldwide. An example of the need to quantify the strength and direction of species interactions is the conservation of big cats in newly established protected areas in China. Currently, free-ranging livestock degrade the food and habitat of the endangered Amur tiger and Amur leopard in the forest landscapes of Northeast China, but quantitative assessments of how livestock affect the use of habitat by the major ungulate prey of these predators are very limited. Here, we examined livestock-ungulate interactions using large-scale camera-trap data in the newly established Tiger and Leopard National Park in Northeast China, which borders Russia. We used N-mixture models, two-species occupancy models and activity pattern overlap to understand the effects of cattle grazing on three ungulate species (wild boar, roe deer and sika deer) at a fine spatiotemporal scale. Our results showed that incorporating the biotic interactions with cattle had significant negative effects on encounters with three ungulates; sika deer were particularly displaced as more cattle encroached on forest habitat, as they exhibited low levels of co-occurrence with cattle in terms of habitat use. These results, combined with spatiotemporal overlap, suggested fine-scale avoidance behaviours, and they can help to refine strategies for the conservation of tigers, leopards and their prey in human-dominated transboundary landscapes. Progressively controlling cattle and the impact of cattle on biodiversity while simultaneously addressing the economic needs of local communities should be key priority actions for the Chinese government.

ROC-Guided Survival Trees and Ensembles

Tree-based methods are popular nonparametric tools in studying time-to-event outcomes. In this article, we introduce a novel framework for survival trees and ensembles, where the trees partition the dynamic survivor population and can handle time-dependent covariates. Using the idea of randomized tests, we develop generalized time-dependent Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves for evaluating the performance of survival trees. The tree-building algorithm is guided by decision-theoretic criteria based on ROC, targeting specifically for prediction accuracy. To address the instability issue of a single tree, we propose a novel ensemble procedure based on averaging martingale estimating equations, which is different from existing methods that average the predicted survival or cumulative hazard functions from individual trees. Extensive simulation studies are conducted to examine the performance of the proposed methods. We apply the methods to a study on AIDS for illustration.

Optical properties of thin-film vanadium dioxide from the visible to the far infrared

The insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) in vanadium dioxide (VO2) can enable a variety of optics applications, including switching and modulation, optical limiting, and tuning of optical resonators. Despite the widespread interest in optics, the optical properties of VO2 across its IMT are scattered throughout the literature, and are not available in some wavelength regions. We characterized the complex refractive index of VO2 thin films across the IMT for free-space wavelengths from 300 nm to 30 μm, using broadband spectroscopic ellipsometry, reflection spectroscopy, and the application of effective-medium theory. We studied VO2 thin films of different thickness, on two different substrates (silicon and sapphire), and grown using different synthesis methods (sputtering and sol gel). While there are differences in the optical properties of VO2 synthesized under different conditions, they are relatively minor compared to the change resulting from the IMT, most notably in the ~2 - 11 μm range where the insulating phase of VO2 has relatively low optical loss. We found that the macroscopic optical properties of VO2 are much more robust to sample-to-sample variation compared to the electrical properties, making the refractive-index datasets from this article broadly useful for modeling and design of VO2-based optical and optoelectronic components.

Simplex Search Based Brain Storm Optimization

Through modeling human's brainstorming process, the brain storm optimization (BSO) algorithm has become a promising population-based evolutionary algorithm. However, BSO is pointed out that it possesses a degenerated L-curve phenomenon, i.e., it often gets near optimum quickly but needs much more cost to improve the accuracy. To overcome this question in this paper, an excellent direct search based local solver, the Nelder-Mead Simplex (NMS) method is adopted in BSO. Through combining BSO's exploration ability and NMS's exploitation ability together, a simplex search based BSO (Simplex-BSO) is developed via a better balance between global exploration and local exploitation. Simplex-BSO is shown to be able to eliminate the degenerated L-curve phenomenon on unimodal functions, and alleviate significantly this phenomenon on multimodal functions. Large number of experimental results show that Simplex-BSO is a promising algorithm for global optimization problems.

Strongly correlated proton-doped perovskite nickelate memory devices

We demonstrate memory devices based on proton doping and re-distribution in perovskite nickelates (RNiO3, {R=Sm,Nd}) that undergo filling-controlled Mott transition. Switching speeds as high as 30 ns in two-terminal devices patterned by electron-beam lithography is observed. The state switching speed reported here are 300X greater than what has been noted with proton-driven resistance switching to date. The ionic-electronic correlated oxide memory devices also exhibit multi-state non-volatile switching. The results are of relevance to use of quantum materials in emerging memory and neuromorphic computing.

Estimating matching affinity matrix under low-rank constraints

In this paper, we address the problem of estimating transport surplus (a.k.a. matching affinity) in high dimensional optimal transport problems. Classical optimal transport theory specifies the matching affinity and determines the optimal joint distribution. In contrast, we study the inverse problem of estimating matching affinity based on the observation of the joint distribution, using an entropic regularization of the problem. To accommodate high dimensionality of the data, we propose a novel method that incorporates a nuclear norm regularization which effectively enforces a rank constraint on the affinity matrix. The low-rank matrix estimated in this way reveals the main factors which are relevant for matching.
