Ultra-compact nonvolatile phase shifter based on electrically reprogrammable transparent phase change materials

Energy-efficient programmable photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are the cornerstone of on-chip classical and quantum optical technologies. Optical phase shifters constitute the fundamental building blocks which enable these programmable PICs. Thus far, carrier modulation and thermo-optical effect are the chosen phenomena for ultrafast and low-loss phase shifters, respectively; however, the state and information they carry are lost once the power is turned off-they are volatile. The volatility not only compromises energy efficiency due to their demand for constant power supply, but also precludes them from emerging applications such as in-memory computing. To circumvent this limitation, we introduce a novel phase shifting mechanism that exploits the nonvolatile refractive index modulation upon structural phase transition of Sb$_{2}$Se$_{3}$, a bi-stable transparent phase change material. A zero-static power and electrically-driven phase shifter was realized on a foundry-processed silicon-on-insulator platform, featuring record phase modulation up to 0.09 $π$/$μ$m and a low insertion loss of 0.3 dB/$π$, which can be further improved upon streamlined design. We also pioneered a one-step partial amorphization scheme to enhance the speed and energy efficiency of PCM devices. A diverse cohort of programmable photonic devices were demonstrated based on the ultra-compact PCM phase shifter.

The removal method and generation mechanism of spikes in Insight-HXMT/HE telescope

Spikes are some obvious sharp increases that appear on the raw light curves of High Energy X-ray telescope(HE) onboard Insight-HXMT, which could have influences on the data products like energy and power spectra. They are considered to be fake triggers generated by large signals. In this paper, we study the characteristic of the spikes and propose two methods to remove spikes from the raw data. According to the different influences on energy and power spectra, the best parameters for removing the spikes is selected and used in the Insight-HXMT data analysis software. The generation mechanism of spikes is also studied using the backup HE detectors on ground and the spikes can be reduced by the electronic design.

Graph-adaptive Rectified Linear Unit for Graph Neural Networks

Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have achieved remarkable success by extending traditional convolution to learning on non-Euclidean data. The key to the GNNs is adopting the neural message-passing paradigm with two stages: aggregation and update. The current design of GNNs considers the topology information in the aggregation stage. However, in the updating stage, all nodes share the same updating function. The identical updating function treats each node embedding as i.i.d. random variables and thus ignores the implicit relationships between neighborhoods, which limits the capacity of the GNNs. The updating function is usually implemented with a linear transformation followed by a non-linear activation function. To make the updating function topology-aware, we inject the topological information into the non-linear activation function and propose Graph-adaptive Rectified Linear Unit (GReLU), which is a new parametric activation function incorporating the neighborhood information in a novel and efficient way. The parameters of GReLU are obtained from a hyperfunction based on both node features and the corresponding adjacent matrix. To reduce the risk of overfitting and the computational cost, we decompose the hyperfunction as two independent components for nodes and features respectively. We conduct comprehensive experiments to show that our plug-and-play GReLU method is efficient and effective given different GNN backbones and various downstream tasks.

Effect of non-uniform efficiency on higher-order cumulants in heavy-ion collisions

We perform a systematic study on the effect of non-uniform track efficiency correction in higher-order cumulant analysis in heavy-ion collisions. Through analytical derivation, we find that the true values of cumulants can be successfully reproduced by the efficiency correction with an average of the realistic detector efficiency for particles with the same charges within each single phase space. The theoretical conclusions are supported by a toy model simulation by tuning the non-uniformity of the efficiency employed in the track-by-track efficiency correction method. The valid averaged efficiency is found to suppress the statistical uncertainties of the reproduced cumulants dramatically. Thus, usage of the averaged efficiency requires a careful study of phase space dependence. This study is important for carrying out precision measurements of higher-order cumulants in heavy-ion collision experiments at present and in future.

Cavity Induced Extraordinary Optical Transmission and Active Modulation with Graphene

Extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) is a phenomenon of exceptional light transmission through a metallic film with hole arrays enhanced by surface plasmon (SP) resonance, which stimulates renewed research hotspots in metamaterials, subwavelength optics, and plasmonics. Below the frequency of the first order SP mode, f_pl0, the metallic film typically shows strong reflection and no EOT. Here, we report an unusual EOT phenomenon below fpl0, i.e., beyond the long-held spectral boundary of classic EOTs. It is induced by a novel bound surface state in a Fabry-Perot(F-P) cavity comprising a holey gold film and a silicon-air interface. By tailoring the cavity length, EOT phenomenon has been pushed deep into the sub-wavelength region by a factor of as large as 20%, and EOT frequency comb with cavity function has been achieved. Due to the enhanced slow-wave effect as the frequency approaches fpl0, the cavity induced EOT gradually merges with the first order SP EOT. Distinguishing from the classic EOT phenomenon, no transmission zero is found between these two EOTs, which dramatically broadens the EOT bandwidth by a factor of 10 at terahertz (THz) frequencies. Furthermore, the EOT transmittance is actively modulated with graphene, achieving a large modulation range from 0.5 to 0.25 under a sub-volt bias from -0.3 to 0.5 V at 500 GHz. To the best of the authors' knowledge, both the modulation range and the low bias are among the best for active EOT devices with graphene to date. Such a structure provides a new strategy for miniaturizing sensing devices, high-power sources, and broadband photonics as well as their active control in the THz regime.

In-orbit timing calibration of the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope

We describe the timing system and the timing calibration results of the three payloads on-board the Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT). These three payloads are the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE, 20-250 keV), the Medium Energy X-ray telescope (ME, 5-30 keV) and the low Energy X-ray telescope (LE, 1-10 keV). We present a method to correct the temperature-dependent period response and the long-term variation of the on-board crystal oscillator, especially for ME that does not carry a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator. The time of arrivals (ToAs) of the Crab pulsar are measured to evaluate the accuracy of the timing system. As the ephemeris of the Crab pulsar given by Jodrell Bank observatory has systematic errors around 40 μs (Rots et al. 2014), we use the quasi-simultaneous observations of the X-ray Timing Instrument (XTI) on-board the Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) to produce the Crab ephemerides and to verify the timing system of Insight-HXMT. The energy-dependent ToAs' offsets relative to the NICER measurements including physical and instrumental origins are about 24.7μs, 10.1μs and 864.7μs, and the systematic errors of the timing system are determined as 12.1μs, 8.6μs, and 15.8μs, for HE, ME and LE respectively.

Towards Low-loss 1-bit Quantization of User-item Representations for Top-K Recommendation

Due to the promising advantages in space compression and inference acceleration, quantized representation learning for recommender systems has become an emerging research direction recently. As the target is to embed latent features in the discrete embedding space, developing quantization for user-item representations with a few low-precision integers confronts the challenge of high information loss, thus leading to unsatisfactory performance in Top-K recommendation. In this work, we study the problem of representation learning for recommendation with 1-bit quantization. We propose a model named Low-loss Quantized Graph Convolutional Network (L^2Q-GCN). Different from previous work that plugs quantization as the final encoder of user-item embeddings, L^2Q-GCN learns the quantized representations whilst capturing the structural information of user-item interaction graphs at different semantic levels. This achieves the substantial retention of intermediate interactive information, alleviating the feature smoothing issue for ranking caused by numerical quantization. To further improve the model performance, we also present an advanced solution named L^2Q-GCN-anl with quantization approximation and annealing training strategy. We conduct extensive experiments on four benchmarks over Top-K recommendation task. The experimental results show that, with nearly 9x representation storage compression, L^2Q-GCN-anl attains about 90~99% performance recovery compared to the state-of-the-art model.

Sweeping Plasma Frequency of Terahertz Surface Plasmon Polaritons with Graphene

Plasma frequency is the spectral boundary for low-loss propagation and evanescent decay of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waves, which corresponds to a high cut-off phenomenon and is typically utilized for identifying SPPs. At terahertz (THz) frequencies, a metal line with periodic metallic grooves can mimic the conventional optical SPPs, which is referred to as designer SPPs. Theoretically, the plasma frequency of THz SPPs decreases as the groove depth increases. Here, by replacing the metallic grooves with graphene sheets, dynamically sweeping SPP plasma frequency is demonstrated for the first time. The metal-graphene hybrid structure comprises a metal line with periodic graphene grooves, a thin-layer ion gel for gating graphene, and metallic tips for uniforming gate field. As the chemical potential changes, the average conductivity of graphene is modulated so that the effective depth of the graphene grooves changes, which sweeps the plasma frequency of THz SPPs consequently. Both simulated and experimental data demonstrate a red shift of plasma frequency from 195 to 180 GHz at a low bias from -0.5 to 0.5 V. The proposed structure reveals a novel approach to control the on/off status of SPP propagation in the THz range.

Non-extensive statistical distributions of charmed meson production in Pb-Pb and pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions

The mid-rapidity transverse-momentum spectra of charmed meson in Pb-Pb and pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions are analyzed by Tsallis-Pareto distribution derived from non-extensive statistics. We perform uniform descriptions for both small and large systems over a wide range of collision energy and hadron transverse momentum. By establishing the relation between the event multiplicity and the Tsallis parameters, we observe that there is significant linearity between thermal temperature and Tsallis-q parameter in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV and 5.02 TeV. And the slope of the T $-$ (q - 1) parameter is positively correlated with the hadron mass. In addition, the charm mesons have higher thermal temperature than the light hadrons at the same q - 1, indicating that charmed flavor requires a higher temperature to achieve the same degree of non-extensive as light flavors in the heavy-ion collision. The same fit is performed to the transverse momentum spectra of charmed meson in pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collision over a large energy range with Tsallis-Pareto distribution. It is found that the thermal temperature increases with system energy while the q parameter shows a saturated trend and stops at pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) limit, q - 1 = 0.142 $\pm$ 0.010. Meanwhile, the results of most peripheral Pb-Pb collisions are found to approach the pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) limit, which suggests that less medium effect and more in similarity with pp($\overline{\text{p}}$) collisions are found in more peripheral heavy-ion collisions.

Dense Semantic Contrast for Self-Supervised Visual Representation Learning

Self-supervised representation learning for visual pre-training has achieved remarkable success with sample (instance or pixel) discrimination and semantics discovery of instance, whereas there still exists a non-negligible gap between pre-trained model and downstream dense prediction tasks. Concretely, these downstream tasks require more accurate representation, in other words, the pixels from the same object must belong to a shared semantic category, which is lacking in the previous methods. In this work, we present Dense Semantic Contrast (DSC) for modeling semantic category decision boundaries at a dense level to meet the requirement of these tasks. Furthermore, we propose a dense cross-image semantic contrastive learning framework for multi-granularity representation learning. Specially, we explicitly explore the semantic structure of the dataset by mining relations among pixels from different perspectives. For intra-image relation modeling, we discover pixel neighbors from multiple views. And for inter-image relations, we enforce pixel representation from the same semantic class to be more similar than the representation from different classes in one mini-batch. Experimental results show that our DSC model outperforms state-of-the-art methods when transferring to downstream dense prediction tasks, including object detection, semantic segmentation, and instance segmentation. Code will be made available.

Exploring Instance Relations for Unsupervised Feature Embedding

Despite the great progress achieved in unsupervised feature embedding, existing contrastive learning methods typically pursue view-invariant representations through attracting positive sample pairs and repelling negative sample pairs in the embedding space, while neglecting to systematically explore instance relations. In this paper, we explore instance relations including intra-instance multi-view relation and inter-instance interpolation relation for unsupervised feature embedding. Specifically, we embed intra-instance multi-view relation by aligning the distribution of the distance between an instance's different augmented samples and negative samples. We explore inter-instance interpolation relation by transferring the ratio of information for image sample interpolation from pixel space to feature embedding space. The proposed approach, referred to as EIR, is simple-yet-effective and can be easily inserted into existing view-invariant contrastive learning based methods. Experiments conducted on public benchmarks for image classification and retrieval report state-of-the-art or comparable performance.

The design of the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope receiver

Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4° field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year. Here we present the AliCPT-1 receiver design, and how the design has been optimized to meet the experimental requirements.

A Graph Reasoning Network for Multi-turn Response Selection via Customized Pre-training

We investigate response selection for multi-turn conversation in retrieval-based chatbots. Existing studies pay more attention to the matching between utterances and responses by calculating the matching score based on learned features, leading to insufficient model reasoning ability. In this paper, we propose a graph-reasoning network (GRN) to address the problem. GRN first conducts pre-training based on ALBERT using next utterance prediction and utterance order prediction tasks specifically devised for response selection. These two customized pre-training tasks can endow our model with the ability of capturing semantical and chronological dependency between utterances. We then fine-tune the model on an integrated network with sequence reasoning and graph reasoning structures. The sequence reasoning module conducts inference based on the highly summarized context vector of utterance-response pairs from the global perspective. The graph reasoning module conducts the reasoning on the utterance-level graph neural network from the local perspective. Experiments on two conversational reasoning datasets show that our model can dramatically outperform the strong baseline methods and can achieve performance which is close to human-level.

Adversarial Synthesis of Human Pose from Text

This work focuses on synthesizing human poses from human-level text descriptions. We propose a model that is based on a conditional generative adversarial network. It is designed to generate 2D human poses conditioned on human-written text descriptions. The model is trained and evaluated using the COCO dataset, which consists of images capturing complex everyday scenes with various human poses. We show through qualitative and quantitative results that the model is capable of synthesizing plausible poses matching the given text, indicating that it is possible to generate poses that are consistent with the given semantic features, especially for actions with distinctive poses.

Electrically Reconfigurable Nonvolatile Metasurface Using Low-Loss Optical Phase Change Material

Active metasurfaces promise reconfigurable optics with drastically improved compactness, ruggedness, manufacturability, and functionality compared to their traditional bulk counterparts. Optical phase change materials (O-PCMs) offer an appealing material solution for active metasurface devices with their large index contrast and nonvolatile switching characteristics. Here we report what we believe to be the first electrically reconfigurable nonvolatile metasurfaces based on O-PCMs. The O-PCM alloy used in the devices, Ge2Sb2Se4Te1 (GSST), uniquely combines giant non-volatile index modulation capability, broadband low optical loss, and a large reversible switching volume, enabling significantly enhanced light-matter interactions within the active O-PCM medium. Capitalizing on these favorable attributes, we demonstrated continuously tunable active metasurfaces with record half-octave spectral tuning range and large optical contrast of over 400%. We further prototyped a polarization-insensitive phase-gradient metasurface to realize dynamic optical beam steering.

Progressive Cluster Purification for Unsupervised Feature Learning

In unsupervised feature learning, sample specificity based methods ignore the inter-class information, which deteriorates the discriminative capability of representation models. Clustering based methods are error-prone to explore the complete class boundary information due to the inevitable class inconsistent samples in each cluster. In this work, we propose a novel clustering based method, which, by iteratively excluding class inconsistent samples during progressive cluster formation, alleviates the impact of noise samples in a simple-yet-effective manner. Our approach, referred to as Progressive Cluster Purification (PCP), implements progressive clustering by gradually reducing the number of clusters during training, while the sizes of clusters continuously expand consistently with the growth of model representation capability. With a well-designed cluster purification mechanism, it further purifies clusters by filtering noise samples which facilitate the subsequent feature learning by utilizing the refined clusters as pseudo-labels. Experiments on commonly used benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed PCP improves baseline method with significant margins. Our code will be available at https://github.com/zhangyifei0115/PCP.

Multi-level Electro-thermal Switching of Optical Phase-Change Materials Using Graphene

Reconfigurable photonic systems featuring minimal power consumption are crucial for integrated optical devices in real-world technology. Current active devices available in foundries, however, use volatile methods to modulate light, requiring a constant supply of power and significant form factors. Essential aspects to overcoming these issues are the development of nonvolatile optical reconfiguration techniques which are compatible with on-chip integration with different photonic platforms and do not disrupt their optical performances. In this paper, a solution is demonstrated using an optoelectronic framework for nonvolatile tunable photonics that employs undoped-graphene microheaters to thermally and reversibly switch the optical phase-change material Ge$_2$Sb$_2$Se$_4$Te$_1$ (GSST). An in-situ Raman spectroscopy method is utilized to demonstrate, in real-time, reversible switching between four different levels of crystallinity. Moreover, a 3D computational model is developed to precisely interpret the switching characteristics, and to quantify the impact of current saturation on power dissipation, thermal diffusion, and switching speed. This model is used to inform the design of nonvolatile active photonic devices; namely, broadband Si$_3$N$_4$ integrated photonic circuits with small form-factor modulators and reconfigurable metasurfaces displaying 2$π$ phase coverage through neural-network-designed GSST meta-atoms. This framework will enable scalable, low-loss nonvolatile applications across a diverse range of photonics platforms.
