Componentwise perturbation analysis for the generalized Schur decomposition

By defining two important terms called basic perturbation vectors and obtaining their linear bounds, we obtain the linear componentwise perturbation bounds for unitary factors and upper triangular factors of the generalized Schur decomposition. The perturbation bounds for the diagonal elements of the upper triangular factors and the generalized invariant subspace are also derived. From the former, we present an upper bound and a condition number of the generalized eigenvalue. Furthermore, with numerical iterative method, the nonlinear componentwise perturbation bounds of the generalized Schur decomposition are also provided. Numerical examples are given to test the obtained bounds. Among them, we compare our upper bound and condition number of the generalized eigenvalue with their counterparts given in the literature. Numerical results show that they are very close to each other but our results don't contain the information on the left and right generalized eigenvectors.

T product Tensors Part II: Tail Bounds for Sums of Random T product Tensors

This paper is the Part II of a serious work about T product tensors focusing at establishing new probability bounds for sums of random, independent, T product tensors. These probability bounds characterize large deviation behavior of the extreme eigenvalue of the sums of random T product tensors. We apply Lapalace transform method and Lieb concavity theorem for T product tensors obtained from our Part I paper, and apply these tools to generalize the classical bounds associated with the names Chernoff, and Bernstein from the scalar to the T product tensor setting. Tail bounds for the norm of a sum of random rectangular T product tensors are also derived from corollaries of random Hermitian T product tensors cases. The proof mechanism is also applied to T product tensor valued martingales and T product tensor based Azuma, Hoeffding and McDiarmid inequalities are derived.

Spatial-Temporal Transformer for 3D Point Cloud Sequences

Effective learning of spatial-temporal information within a point cloud sequence is highly important for many down-stream tasks such as 4D semantic segmentation and 3D action recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel framework named Point Spatial-Temporal Transformer (PST2) to learn spatial-temporal representations from dynamic 3D point cloud sequences. Our PST2 consists of two major modules: a Spatio-Temporal Self-Attention (STSA) module and a Resolution Embedding (RE) module. Our STSA module is introduced to capture the spatial-temporal context information across adjacent frames, while the RE module is proposed to aggregate features across neighbors to enhance the resolution of feature maps. We test the effectiveness our PST2 with two different tasks on point cloud sequences, i.e., 4D semantic segmentation and 3D action recognition. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks show that our PST2 outperforms existing methods on all datasets. The effectiveness of our STSA and RE modules have also been justified with ablation experiments.

Generalized T-product Tensor Bernstein Bounds

Since Kilmer et al. introduced the new multiplication method between two third-order tensors around 2008 and third-order tensors with such multiplication structure are also called as T-product tensors, T-product tensors have been applied to many fields in science and engineering, such as low-rank tensor approximation, signal processing, image feature extraction, machine learning, computer vision, and the multi-view clustering problem, etc. However, there are very few works dedicated to exploring the behavior of random T-product tensors. This work considers the problem about the tail behavior of the unitarily invariant norm for the summation of random symmetric T-product tensors. Majorization and antisymmetric Kronecker product tools are main techniques utilized to establish inequalities for unitarily norms of multivariate T-product tensors. The Laplace transform method is integrated with these inequalities for unitarily norms of multivariate T-product tensors to provide us with Bernstein Bounds estimation of Ky Fan $k$-norm for functions of the symmetric random T-product tensors summation.

T product Tensors Part I: Inequalities

The T product operation between two three order tensors was invented around 2011 and it arises from many applications, such as signal processing, image feature extraction, machine learning, computer vision, and the multiview clustering problem. Although there are many pioneer works about T product tensors, there are no works dedicated to inequalities associated with T product tensors. In this work, we first attempt to build inequalities at the following aspects: (1) trace function nondecreasing and convexity; (2) Golden Thompson inequality for T product tensors; (3) Jensen T product inequality; (4) Klein T product inequality. All these inequalities are related to generalize celebrated Lieb concavity theorem from matrices to T product tensors. This new version of Lieb concavity theorem under T product tensor will be used to determine the tail bound for the maximum eigenvalue induced by independent sums of random Hermitian T product, which is the key tool to derive various new tail bounds for random T product tensors. Besides, Qi et. al introduces a new concept, named eigentuple, about T product tensors and they apply this concept to study nonnegative (positive) definite properties of T product tensors. The final main contribution of this work is to develop the Courant Fischer Theorem with respect to eigentuples, and this theorem helps us to understand the relationship between the minimum eigentuple and the maximum eigentuple. The main content of this paper is Part I of a serious task about T product tensors. The Part II of this work will utilize these new inequalities and Courant Fischer Theorem under T product tensors to derive tail bounds of the extreme eigenvalue and the maximum eigentuple for sums of random T product tensors, e.g., T product tensor Chernoff and T product tensor Bernstein bounds.

A contribution to condition numbers of the multidimensional total least squares problem with linear equality constraint

This paper is devoted to condition numbers of the multidimensional total least squares problem with linear equality constraint (TLSE). Based on the perturbation theory of invariant subspace, the TLSE problem is proved to be equivalent to a multidimensional unconstrained weighed total least squares problem in the limit sense. With a limit technique, Kronecker-product-based formulae for normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers of the minimum Frobenius norm TLSE solution are given. Compact upper bounds of these condition numbers are provided to reduce the storage and computation cost. All expressions and upper bounds of these condition numbers unify the ones for the single-dimensional TLSE problem and multidimensional total least squares problem. Some numerical experiments are performed to illustrate our results.

COVID-19 causes record decline in global CO2 emissions

The considerable cessation of human activities during the COVID-19 pandemic has affected global energy use and CO2 emissions. Here we show the unprecedented decrease in global fossil CO2 emissions from January to April 2020 was of 7.8% (938 Mt CO2 with a +6.8% of 2-σ uncertainty) when compared with the period last year. In addition other emerging estimates of COVID impacts based on monthly energy supply or estimated parameters, this study contributes to another step that constructed the near-real-time daily CO2 emission inventories based on activity from power generation (for 29 countries), industry (for 73 countries), road transportation (for 406 cities), aviation and maritime transportation and commercial and residential sectors emissions (for 206 countries). The estimates distinguished the decline of CO2 due to COVID-19 from the daily, weekly and seasonal variations as well as the holiday events. The COVID-related decreases in CO2 emissions in road transportation (340.4 Mt CO2, -15.5%), power (292.5 Mt CO2, -6.4% compared to 2019), industry (136.2 Mt CO2, -4.4%), aviation (92.8 Mt CO2, -28.9%), residential (43.4 Mt CO2, -2.7%), and international shipping (35.9Mt CO2, -15%). Regionally, decreases in China were the largest and earliest (234.5 Mt CO2,-6.9%), followed by Europe (EU-27 & UK) (138.3 Mt CO2, -12.0%) and the U.S. (162.4 Mt CO2, -9.5%). The declines of CO2 are consistent with regional nitrogen oxides concentrations observed by satellites and ground-based networks, but the calculated signal of emissions decreases (about 1Gt CO2) will have little impacts (less than 0.13ppm by April 30, 2020) on the overserved global CO2 concertation. However, with observed fast CO2 recovery in China and partial re-opening globally, our findings suggest the longer-term effects on CO2 emissions are unknown and should be carefully monitored using multiple measures.

Randomized algorithms for the low multilinear rank approximations of tensors

In this paper, we focus on developing randomized algorithms for the computation of low multilinear rank approximations of tensors based on the random projection and the singular value decomposition. Following the theory of the singular values of sub-Gaussian matrices, we make a probabilistic analysis for the error bounds for the randomized algorithm. We demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed algorithms via several numerical examples.

T-Jordan Canonical Form and T-Drazin Inverse based on the T-Product

In this paper, we introduce the tensor similar transforation and propose the T-Jordan canonical form and its properties. The concept of T-minimal polynomial and T-characteristic polynomial are raised. As a special case, we present properties when two tensors commutes via the tensor T-product. The Cayley-Hamilton theorem also holds for tensor cases. Then we focus on the tensor decomposition theory. T-polar, T-LU, T-QR and T-Schur decomposition of tensors are obtained. When a F-square tensor is not invertible via the T-product, we give the T-group inverse and T-Drazin inverse which can be viewed as the extension of matrix cases. The expression of T-group and T-Drazin inverse are given by the T-Jordan canonical form. The polynomial form of T-Drazin inverse is also proposed. As an application we raise the T-linear system and get its solution. In the last part, we give the T-core-nilpotent decomposition and show that the T-index and T-Drazin inverse can be given by a limitation process.

Generalized Tensor Function via the Tensor Singular Value Decomposition based on the T-Product

In this paper, we present the definition of generalized tensor function according to the tensor singular value decomposition (T-SVD) via the tensor T-product. Also, we introduce the compact singular value decomposition (T-CSVD) of tensors via the T-product, from which the projection operators and Moore Penrose inverse of tensors are also obtained. We also establish the Cauchy integral formula for tensors by using the partial isometry tensors and applied it into the solution of tensor equations. Then we establish the generalized tensor power and the Taylor expansion of tensors. Explicit generalized tensor functions are also listed. We define the tensor bilinear and sesquilinear forms and proposed theorems on structures preserved by generalized tensor functions. For complex tensors, we established an isomorphism between complex tensors and real tensors. In the last part of our paper, we find that the block circulant operator established an isomorphism between tensors and matrices. This isomorphism is used to prove the F-stochastic structure is invariant under generalized tensor functions. The concept of invariant tensor cones is also raised.

M-eigenvalues of The Riemann Curvature Tensor

The Riemann curvature tensor is a central mathematical tool in Einstein's theory of general relativity. Its related eigenproblem plays an important role in mathematics and physics. We extend M-eigenvalues for the elasticity tensor to the Riemann curvature tensor. The definition of M-eigenproblem of the Riemann curvature tensor is introduced from the minimization of an associated function. The M-eigenvalues of the Riemann curvature tensor always exist and are real. They are invariants of the Riemann curvature tensor. The associated function of the Riemann curvature tensor is always positive at a point if and only if the M-eigenvalues of the Riemann curvature tensor are all positive at that point. We investigate the M-eigenvalues for the simple cases, such as the 2D case, the 3D case, the constant curvature and the Schwarzschild solution, and all the calculated M-eigenvalues are related to the curvature invariants.

Theoretical analysis shows that each of the defined dynamical system models ensures the convergence performance. The computer simulation results further substantiate that the considered dynamical system can solve the tensor complementarity problem (TCP).

Stochastic $R_0$ Tensors to Stochastic Tensor Complementarity Problems

The main purpose of this paper is devoted to an introduction of the stochastic tensor complementarity problem. We consider the expected residual minimization formulation of the stochastic tensor complementarity problem. We show that the solution set of the expected residual minimization problem is nonempty and bounded, if the associated tensor is an $R_0$ tensor. We also prove that the associated tensor being a stochastic $R_0$ tensor is a necessary and sufficient condition for the solution set of the expected residual minimization problem to be nonempty and bounded.

Randomized Core Reduction for Discrete Ill-Posed Problem

In this paper, we apply randomized algorithms to approximate the total least squares (TLS) solution of the problem $Ax\approx b$ in the large-scale discrete ill-posed problems. A regularization technique, based on the multiplicative randomization and the subspace iteration, is proposed to obtain the approximate core problem. In the error analysis, we provide upper bounds %in terms of the $(k\!\!+\!\!1)$-th singular value of $A$ for the errors of the solution and the residual of the randomized core reduction. Illustrative numerical examples and comparisons are presented.

M-eigenvalues of Riemann Curvature Tensor of Conformally Flat Manifolds

We generalized Xiang, Qi and Wei's results on the M-eigenvalues of Riemann curvature tensor to higher dimensional conformal flat manifolds. The expression of M-eigenvalues and M-eigenvectors are found in our paper. As a special case, M-eigenvalues of conformal flat Einstein manifold have also been discussed, and the conformal the invariance of M-eigentriple has been found. We also discussed the relationship between M-eigenvalue and sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold. We proved that the M-eigenvalue can determine the Riemann curvature tensor uniquely and generalize the real M-eigenvalue to complex cases. In the last part of our paper, we give an example to compute the M-eigentriple of de Sitter spacetime which is well-known in general relativity.

On the M-eigenvalues of elasticity tensor and the strong ellipticity condition

Strong ellipticity is an important property in the elasticity theory. In 2009, M-eigenvalues were introduced for the elasticity tensor. It was shown that M-eigenvalues are invariant under coordinate system choices, and the strong ellipticity condition holds if and only if all the M-eigenvalues of the elasticity tensor are positive. Thus, M-eigenvalues are some intrinsic parameters of the elasticity tensor. In this paper, we show that the M-eigenvalues of the elasticity tensor are closely related with some elastic moduli, such as the bulk modulus, the shear modulus, Lamé's first parameter, the P-wave modulus, etc, and the positiveness of the M-eigenvalues are corresponding to some existing conditions for strong ellipticity in some special cases, such as the isotropic case, the cubic case, the polar anisotropic case and the tetragonal case. We also present new sufficient conditions for the strong ellipticity of the orthotropic case. These, in a certain sense, further reveal the physical meanings of M-eigenvalues.

Structured Condition Numbers of Structured Tikhonov Regularization Problem and their Estimations

Both structured componentwise and structured normwise perturbation analysis of the Tikhonov regularization are presented. The structured matrices under consideration include: Toeplitz, Hankel, Vandermonde, and Cauchy matrices. Structured normwise, mixed and componentwise condition numbers for the Tikhonov regularization are introduced and their explicit expressions are derived. For the general linear structure, we prove the structured condition numbers are smaller than their corresponding unstructured counterparts based on the derived expressions. By means of the power method and small sample condition estimation, the fast condition estimation algorithms are proposed. Our estimation methods can be integrated into Tikhonov regularization algorithms that use the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD). The structured condition numbers and perturbation bounds are tested on some numerical examples and compared with their unstructured counterparts. Our numerical examples demonstrate that the structured mixed condition numbers give sharper perturbation bounds than existing ones, and the proposed condition estimation algorithms are reliable.

Inheritance Properties and Sum-of-Squares Decomposition of Hankel Tensors: Theory and Algorithms

In this paper, we show that if a lower-order Hankel tensor is positive semi-definite (or positive definite, or negative semi-definite, or negative definite, or SOS), then its associated higher-order Hankel tensor with the same generating vector, where the higher order is a multiple of the lower order, is also positive semi-definite (or positive definite, or negative semi-definite, or negative definite, or SOS, respectively). Furthermore, in this case, the extremal H-eigenvalues of the higher order tensor are bounded by the extremal H-eigenvalues of the lower order tensor, multiplied with some constants. Based on this inheritance property, we give a concrete sum-of-squares decomposition for each strong Hankel tensor. Then we prove the second inheritance property of Hankel tensors, i.e., a Hankel tensor has no negative (or non-positive, or positive, or nonnegative) H-eigenvalues if the associated Hankel matrix of that Hankel tensor has no negative (or non-positive, or positive, or nonnegative, respectively) eigenvalues. In this case, the extremal H-eigenvalues of the Hankel tensor are also bounded by the extremal eigenvalues of the associated Hankel matrix, multiplied with some constants. The third inheritance property of Hankel tensors is raised as a conjecture.
