Inexact Shift-and-Invert Arnoldi for Toeplitz Matrix Exponential

We revisit the shift-and-invert Arnoldi method proposed in [S. Lee, H. Pang, and H. Sun. {\it Shift-invert Arnoldi approximation to the Toeplitz matrix exponential}, SIAM J. Sci. Comput., 32: 774--792, 2010] for numerical approximation to the product of Toeplitz matrix exponential with a vector. In this approach, one has to solve two large scale Toeplitz linear systems in advance. However, if the desired accuracy is high, the cost will be prohibitive. Therefore, it is interesting to investigate how to solve the Toeplitz systems inexactly in this method. The contribution of this paper is in three regards. First, we give a new stability analysis on the Gohberg-Semencul formula (GSF) and define the GSF condition number of a Toeplitz matrix. It is shown that, when the size of the Toeplitz matrix is large, our result is sharper than the one given in [M. Gutknecht and M. Hochbruck. {\it The stability of inversion formulas for Toeplitz matrices}, Linear Algebra Appl., 223/224: 307--324, 1995]. Second, we establish a relation between the error of Toeplitz systems and the residual of Toeplitz matrix exponential. We show that if the GSF condition number of the Toeplitz matrix is medium sized, then the Toeplitz systems can be solved in a low accuracy. Third, based on this relationship, we present a practical stopping criterion for relaxing the accuracy of the Toeplitz systems, and propose an inexact shift-and-invert Arnoldi algorithm for the Toeplitz matrix exponential problem. Numerical experiments illustrate the numerical behavior of the new algorithm, and show the effectiveness of our theoretical results.

Positive Definite Tensors to Nonlinear Complementarity Problems

The main purpose of this note is to investigate some kinds of nonlinear complementarity problems (NCP). For the structured tensors, such as, symmetric positive definite tensors and copositive tensors, we derive the existence theorems on a solution of these kinds of nonlinear complementarity problems. We prove that a unique solution of the NCP exists under the condition of diagonalizable tensors.

Some results on the generalized inverse of tensors and idempotent tensors

Let $\mathcal{A}$ be an order $t$ dimension $m\times n\times \cdots \times n$ tensor over complex field. In this paper, we study some {generalized inverses} of $\mathcal{A}$, the {$k$-T-idempotent tensors} and the idempotent tensors based on the general tensor product. Using the tensor generalized inverse, some solutions of the equation $\mathcal{A}\cdot x^{t-1}=b$ are given, where $x$ and $b$ are dimension $n$ and $m$ vectors, respectively. The {generalized inverses} of some block tensors, the eigenvalues of {$k$-T-idempotent tensors} and idempotent tensors are given. And the relation between the generalized inverses of tensors and the $k$-T-idempotent tensors is also showed.

Perturbation Analysis and Randomized Algorithms for Large-Scale Total Least Squares Problems

In this paper, we present perturbation analysis and randomized algorithms for the total least squares (TLS) problems. We derive the perturbation bound and check its sharpness by numerical experiments. Motivated by the recently popular probabilistic algorithms for low-rank approximations, we develop randomized algorithms for the TLS and the truncated total least squares (TTLS) solutions of large-scale discrete ill-posed problems, which can greatly reduce the computational time and still keep good accuracy.

E-cospectral hypergraphs and some hypergraphs determined by their spectra

Two $k$-uniform hypergraphs are said to be cospectral (E-cospectral), if their adjacency tensors have the same characteristic polynomial (E-characteristic polynomial). A $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ is said to be determined by its spectrum, if there is no other non-isomorphic $k$-uniform hypergraph cospectral with $H$. In this note, we give a method for constructing E-cospectral hypergraphs, which is similar with Godsil-McKay switching. Some hypergraphs are shown to be determined by their spectra.

New rigorous perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations

Combining the modified matrix-vector equation approach with the technique of Lyapunov majorant function and the Banach fixed point principle, we obtain new rigorous perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations with normwise or componentwise perturbations in the given matrix, where the componentwise perturbations have the form of backward errors resulting from the standard factorization algorithms. Each of the new rigorous perturbation bounds is a rigorous version of the first-order perturbation bound derived by the matrix-vector equation approach in the literature, and we present their explicit expressions. These bounds improve the results given by Chang and Stehlé [SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications 2010; 31:2841--2859]. Moreover, we derive new tighter first-order perturbation bounds including two optimal ones for the LU factorization, and provide the explicit expressions of the optimal first-order perturbation bounds for the LU and QR factorizations.

Fast Hankel Tensor-Vector Products and Application to Exponential Data Fitting

This paper is contributed to a fast algorithm for Hankel tensor-vector products. For this purpose, we first discuss a special class of Hankel tensors that can be diagonalized by the Fourier matrix, which is called \emph{anti-circulant} tensors. Then we obtain a fast algorithm for Hankel tensor-vector products by embedding a Hankel tensor into a larger anti-circulant tensor. The computational complexity is about $\mathcal{O}(m^2 n \log mn)$ for a square Hankel tensor of order $m$ and dimension $n$, and the numerical examples also show the efficiency of this scheme. Moreover, the block version for multi-level block Hankel tensors is discussed as well. Finally, we apply the fast algorithm to exponential data fitting and the block version to 2D exponential data fitting for higher performance.

M-Tensors and Nonsingular M-Tensors

The M-matrix is an important concept in matrix theory, and has many applications. Recently, this concept has been extended to higher order tensors [18]. In this paper, we establish some important properties of M-tensors and nonsingular M-tensors. An M-tensor is a Z-tensor. We show that a Z-tensor is a nonsingular M-tensor if and only if it is semi-positive. Thus, a nonsingular M-tensor has all positive diagonal entries; and an M-tensor, regarding as the limitation of a series of nonsingular M-tensors, has all nonnegative diagonal entries. We introduce even-order monotone tensors and present their spectral properties. In matrix theory, a Z-matrix is a nonsingular M-matrix if and only if it is monotone. This is no longer true in the case of higher order tensors. We show that an even-order monotone Z-tensor is an even-order nonsingular M-tensor but not vice versa. An example of an even-order nontrivial monotone Z-tensor is also given.
