A Fuzzy Sphere Journey in Critical Phenomena

This review discusses the recently proposed fuzzy sphere regularization for studying $2+1$D critical phenomena, particularly three-dimensional (3D) conformal field theory (CFT). The fuzzy sphere scheme not only offers remarkable efficiency in extracting extensive CFT data at low computational cost but also reveals unexpected connections among 3D CFT (critical phenomena), noncommutative geometry, and the quantum Hall effect. We introduce the fundamental ideas of fuzzy sphere regularization, emphasizing its role in demonstrating the state-operator correspondence of 3D CFTs on the $S^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ geometry. Additionally, we review key developments in this approach across various directions and outline potential future applications.

Fortuitous Universality of Bose-Kondo Impurities

We use the fuzzy-sphere approach to study the Bose-Kondo impurity problem, namely a spin-$S$ impurity coupled to the $(2+1)$-dimensional $O(3)$ Wilson-Fisher CFT (Heisenberg universality class). We demonstrate that for $S=1/2,1,3/2$ the impurity flows to a distinct stable interacting conformal defect for each $S$. Using large-scale exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods, we observe integer-spaced defect spectrum consistent with defect conformal symmetry and compute several low-lying defect primary operators as well as the RG monotonic $g$-function. Our findings show that despite sharing the same symmetry and anomaly, Bose-Kondo impurities flow to distinct stable infrared conformal fixed points, which we refer to as \emph{fortuitous universality}. We expect this fortuitous universality to persist for all $S$, extending to $S\rightarrow\infty$, with each spin-$S$ impurity flowing to its own stable infrared conformal fixed point.

Generalizing Deconfined Criticality to 3D $N$-Flavor $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ Quantum Chromodynamics on the Fuzzy Sphere

The infra-red behaviour of gauge theories coupled to matter remains an open problem in quantum field theory. For a given gauge group, such theories are expected to flow to an interacting conformal fixed point over a range of fermion or scalar flavours, known as the `conformal window.' Their nature is important for understanding critical phases and phase transitions beyond the Landau paradigm like the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), yet remains challenging for conventional non-perturbative approaches. In this work, we study a family of fuzzy-sphere models corresponding to non-linear sigma models with $\mathrm{Sp}(N)$ global symmetry extended to the strongly-coupled region. These theories are expected have an infra-red fixed point described by $\mathrm{SU}(2)$ quantum chromodynamics (QCD) in three space-time dimensions with $N$ flavours of fermions. They can be viewed as a generalisation of the $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ DQCP, corresponding to $N=2$. We investigate them using quantum Monte Carlo for $N$ up to $16$. We find evidence that for $N\geq4$ the phase diagram contains a critical phase that appears to be absent for $N=2$. Within this phase, we measure the two-point correlation function and the excitation spectrum, which exhibit emergent conformal symmetry. We also extract the scaling dimension $\Delta_\phi$ of a leading operator and find consistency with large-$N$ expectations.

The $O(N)$ Free-Scalar and Wilson-Fisher Conformal Field Theories on the Fuzzy Sphere

The fuzzy-sphere regularization is an emerging numerical and theoretical technique for studying conformal field theories (CFTs). In this paper, we apply it to the $O(N)$ vector model, one of the most prominent theories for critical behavior in three space-time dimensions. We construct a model that realizes the $O(N)$ Wilson-Fisher and free-scalar CFTs for general $N$. For $N=2,3,4$, we present numerical evidence including the operator spectra and correlation functions in agreement with conformal symmetry and conformal bootstrap results.

Free and Interacting Fermionic Conformal Field Theories on the Fuzzy Sphere

The fuzzy-sphere regularisation is a powerful tool to study conformal field theories (CFT) in three spacetime dimensions. In this paper, we extend its scope to CFTs with local fermionic operators. We realise the free-Majorana-fermion CFT on a set-up with one flavour of bosons and one flavour of fermions on the lowest Landau level with a $1/2$ angular momentum mismatch and allow conversion between two bosons and two fermions, and use a relative chemical potential as the tuning parameter. On the phase diagram, we observe two continuous transitions described respectively by a free Majorana fermion and a gauged Ising CFT. We numerically confirm the emergent conformal symmetry through the operator spectrum and the two-point correlation function of the local Majorana fermion. We further establish a correspondence between the fuzzy-sphere models and the field-theory Lagrangians, and extend it to an interacting fermionic CFT -- the super-Ising theory with emergent super-conformal symmetry.

Chern-Simons-matter conformal field theory on fuzzy sphere: Confinement transition of Kalmeyer-Laughlin chiral spin liquid

Gauge theories compose a large class of interacting conformal field theories in 3d, among which an outstanding category is critical Chern-Simons-matter theories. In this paper, we focus on one of the simplest instances: one complex critical scalar coupled to $\mathrm{U}(1)_2$ Chern-Simons gauge field. It is theoretically interesting as it is conjectured to exhibit dualities between four simple Lagrangian descriptions, but also practically important as it describes the transition between Kalmeyer-Laughlin chiral spin liquid (or $ν=1/2$ bosonic Laughlin state) and trivially gapped phase. Using the fuzzy sphere regularisation, we realise this theory as a transition on the spherical lowest Landau level between a $ν_f=2$ fermionic integer quantum Hall state and a $ν_b=1/2$ bosonic fractional quantum Hall state. We show that this transition is continuous and has emergent conformal symmetry. By studying the operator spectrum, we show that there exists only one relevant singlet with scaling dimension $Δ_S=1.52(18)$. We also discuss other higher operators and the consequences of our results.

Free real scalar CFT on fuzzy sphere: spectrum, algebra and wavefunction ansatz

We introduce a simple model to realize the free real scalar CFT on the fuzzy sphere. The model is structurally similar to the original model that realizes the 3D Ising CFT on the fuzzy sphere. Owing to the shift symmetry of the free scalar, the free scalar CFT fixed point in our model can be accessed with only a single tuning parameter-the conformal coupling. We numerically demonstrate that our model correctly reproduces the operator spectrum, correlation functions, and, crucially, the harmonic oscillator algebra of the real scalar CFT. We also examine the fuzzy sphere algebra, a generalization of the Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman algebra, and discuss its potential implications for defining quantum field theories on non-commutative geometries. Finally, we propose wavefunction ansatz for the ground states of both the free scalar and Ising CFTs, which exhibit remarkable agreement with the CFT ground state wavefunctions of the fuzzy sphere model. For instance, the wavefunction overlap between our Ising ansatz and the Ising CFT ground state exceeds $0.99$ for $N=28$ fermions, suggesting a promising direction for tackling the 3D Ising CFT.

A new series of 3D CFTs with $\mathrm{Sp}(N)$ global symmetry on fuzzy sphere

The quest to discover new 3D CFTs has been intriguing for physicists. For this purpose, fuzzy sphere reguarlisation that studies interacting quantum systems defined on the lowest Landau level on a sphere has emerged as a powerful tool. In this paper, we discover a series of new CFTs with global symmetry $\mathrm{Sp}(N)$ in the fuzzy sphere models that are closely related to the $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ deconfined phase transition, and are described by a $\mathrm{Sp}(N)/(\mathrm{Sp}(M)\times \mathrm{Sp}(N-M))$ non-linear sigma model with a Wess-Zumino-Witten term. We numerically verify the emergent conformal symmetry by observing the integer-spaced conformal multiplets and studying the finite-size scaling of the conformality. We discuss possible candidates for these newly discovered CFTs, the most plausible ones being Chern-Simons-matter theories which have $N$ flavour of gapless bosons or fermions coupled to a non-Abelian (viz. $\mathrm{Sp}(1)$, $\mathrm{Sp}(2)$, etc.) Chern-Simons gauge field. Our work provides new avenues for studying interacting CFTs in 3D, possibly facilitating the non-perturbative study of critical gauge theories and previously undiscovered CFTs.

Floquet Flux Attachment in Cold Atomic Systems

Flux attachment provides a powerful conceptual framework for understanding certain forms of topological order, including most notably the fractional quantum Hall effect. Despite its ubiquitous use as a theoretical tool, directly realizing flux attachment in a microscopic setting remains an open challenge. Here, we propose a simple approach to realizing flux attachment in a periodically-driven (Floquet) system of either spins or hard-core bosons. We demonstrate that such a system naturally realizes correlated hopping interactions and provides a sharp connection between such interactions and flux attachment. Starting with a simple, nearest-neighbor, free boson model, we find evidence -- from both a coupled wire analysis and large-scale density matrix renormalization group simulations -- that Floquet flux attachment stabilizes the bosonic integer quantum Hall state at $1/4$ filling (on a square lattice), and the Halperin-221 fractional quantum Hall state at $1/6$ filling (on a honeycomb lattice). At $1/2$ filling on the square lattice, time-reversal symmetry is instead spontaneously broken and bosonic integer quantum Hall states with opposite Hall conductances are degenerate. Finally, we propose an optical-lattice-based implementation of our model on a square lattice and discuss prospects for adiabatic preparation as well as effects of Floquet heating.

Impurities with a cusp: general theory and 3d Ising

In CFTs, the partition function of a line defect with a cusp depends logarithmically on the size of the line with an angle-dependent coefficient: the cusp anomalous dimension. In the first part of this work, we study the general properties of the cusp anomalous dimension. We relate the small cusp angle limit to the effective field theory of defect fusion, making predictions for the first couple of terms in the expansion. Using a concavity property of the cusp anomalous dimension we argue that the Casimir energy between a line defect and its orientation reversal is always negative ("opposites attract"). We use these results to determine the fusion algebra of Wilson lines in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM as well as pinning field defects in the Wilson-Fisher fixed points. In the second part of the paper we obtain nonperturbative numerical results for the cusp anomalous dimension of pinning field defects in the Ising model in $d=3$, using the recently developed fuzzy-sphere regularization. We also compute the pinning field cusp anomalous dimension in the $O(N)$ model at one-loop in the $\varepsilon$-expansion. Our results are in agreement with the general theory developed in the first part of the work, and we make several predictions for impurities in magnets.

Quantum Monte Carlo Simulation of the 3D Ising Transition on the Fuzzy Sphere

We present a numerical quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method for simulating the 3D phase transition on the recently proposed fuzzy sphere [Phys. Rev. X 13, 021009 (2023)]. By introducing an additional $SU(2)$ layer degree of freedom, we reformulate the model into a form suitable for sign-problem-free QMC simulation. From the finite-size-scaling, we show that this QMC-friendly model undergoes a quantum phase transition belonging to the 3D Ising universality class, and at the critical point we compute the scaling dimensions from the state-operator correspondence, which largely agrees with the prediction from the conformal field theory. These results pave the way to construct sign-problem-free models for QMC simulations on the fuzzy sphere, which could advance the future study on more sophisticated criticalities.

The $g$-function and Defect Changing Operators from Wavefunction Overlap on a Fuzzy Sphere

Defects are common in physical systems with boundaries, impurities or extensive measurements. The interaction between bulk and defect can lead to rich physical phenomena. Defects in gapless phases of matter with conformal symmetry usually flow to a defect conformal field theory (dCFT). Understanding the universal properties of dCFTs is a challenging task. In this paper, we propose a computational strategy applicable to a line defect in arbitrary dimensions. Our main assumption is that the defect has a UV description in terms of a local modification of the Hamiltonian so that we can compute the overlap between low-energy eigenstates of a system with or without the defect insertion. We argue that these overlaps contain a wealth of conformal data, including the $g$-function, which is an RG monotonic quantity that distinguishes different dCFTs, the scaling dimensions of defect creation operators $Δ^{+0}_α$ and changing operators $Δ^{+-}_α$ that live on the intersection of different types of line defects, and various OPE coefficients. We apply this method to the fuzzy sphere regularization of 3D CFTs and study the magnetic line defect of the 3D Ising CFT. Using exact diagonalization and DMRG, we report the non-perturbative results $g=0.602(2),Δ^{+0}_0=0.108(5)$ and $Δ^{+-}_0=0.84(5)$ for the first time. We also obtain other OPE coefficients and scaling dimensions. Our results have significant physical implications. For example, they constrain the possible occurrence of spontaneous symmetry breaking at line defects of the 3D Ising CFT. Our method can be potentially applied to various other dCFTs, such as plane defects and Wilson lines in gauge theories.

Solving Conformal Defects in 3D Conformal Field Theory using Fuzzy Sphere Regularization

Defects in conformal field theory (CFT) are of significant theoretical and experimental importance. The presence of defects theoretically enriches the structure of the CFT, but at the same time, it makes it more challenging to study, especially in dimensions higher than two. Here, we demonstrate that the recently-developed theoretical scheme, \textit{fuzzy (non-commutative) sphere regularization}, provides a powerful lens through which one can dissect the defect of 3D CFTs in a transparent way. As a notable example, we study the magnetic line defect of 3D Ising CFT and clearly demonstrate that it flows to a conformal defect fixed point. We have identified 6 low-lying defect primary operators, including the displacement operator, and accurately extract their scaling dimensions through the state-operator correspondence. Moreover, we also compute one-point bulk correlators and two-point bulk-defect correlators, which show great agreement with predictions of defect conformal symmetry, and from which we extract various bulk-defect operator product expansion coefficients. Our work demonstrates that the fuzzy sphere offers a powerful tool for exploring the rich physics in 3D defect CFTs.

Reclaiming the Lost Conformality in a non-Hermitian Quantum 5-state Potts Model

Conformal symmetry, emerging at critical points, can be lost when renormalization group fixed points collide. Recently, it was proposed that after collisions, real fixed points transition into the complex plane, becoming complex fixed points described by complex conformal field theories (CFTs). Although this idea is compelling, directly demonstrating such complex conformal fixed points in microscopic models remains highly demanding. Furthermore, these concrete models are instrumental in unraveling the mysteries of complex CFTs and illuminating a variety of intriguing physical problems, including weakly first-order transitions in statistical mechanics and the conformal window of gauge theories. In this work, we have successfully addressed this complex challenge for the (1+1)-dimensional quantum $5$-state Potts model, whose phase transition has long been known to be weakly first-order. By adding an additional non-Hermitian interaction, we successfully identify two conjugate critical points located in the complex parameter space, where the lost conformality is restored in a complex manner. Specifically, we unambiguously demonstrate the radial quantization of the complex CFTs and compute the operator spectrum, as well as new operator product expansion coefficients that were previously unknown.

Entropic $F$-function of 3D Ising conformal field theory via the fuzzy sphere regularization

The $F$-function, the three-dimensional counterpart of the central charge in the 2D conformal field theory, measures the effective number of degrees of freedom in 3D quantum field theory, and it is monotonically decreasing under the renormalization group flow. However, unlike the 2D central charge, the $F$-function is a non-local quantity and cannot be computed using correlators of local operators. Utilizing the recently proposed fuzzy sphere regularization, we have performed the first non-perturbative computation of the $F$-function for the paradigmatic 3D Ising conformal field theory through entanglement entropy. Our estimate yields $F_{\text{Ising}} \approx 0.0612(5)$, slightly smaller than the $F$-function of a real free scalar, $F_{\text{free}} = \frac{\log 2}{8} - \frac{3ζ(3)}{16π^2} \approx 0.0638$, consistent with the $F$-theorem, and close to the $4-ε$ expansion estimates of $F_{\text{Ising}} \approx 0.0610 \sim 0.0623$.

The $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ Deconfined Phase Transition under the Fuzzy Sphere Microscope: Approximate Conformal Symmetry, Pseudo-Criticality, and Operator Spectrum

The deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) is an example of phase transitions beyond the Landau symmetry breaking paradigm that attracts wide interest. However, its nature has not been settled after decades of study. In this paper, we apply the recently proposed fuzzy sphere regularization to study the $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ non-linear sigma model (NL$σ$M) with a topological Wess-Zumino-Witten term, which serves as a dual description of the DQCP with an exact $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ symmetry. We demonstrate that the fuzzy sphere functions as a powerful microscope, magnifying and revealing a wealth of crucial information about the DQCP, ultimately paving the way towards its final answer. In particular, through exact diagonalization, we provide clear evidence that the DQCP exhibits approximate conformal symmetry. The evidence includes the existence of a conserved $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ symmetry current, a stress tensor, and integer-spaced levels between conformal primaries and their descendants. Most remarkably, we have identified 23 primaries and 76 conformal descendants. Furthermore, by examining the renormalization group flow of the lowest symmetry singlet as well as other primaries, we provide numerical evidence in favour of DQCP being pseudo-critical, with the approximate conformal symmetry plausibly emerging from nearby complex fixed points. The primary spectrum we compute also has important implications, including the conclusion that the $\mathrm{SO}(5)$ DQCP cannot describe a direct transition from the Néel to valence bond solid phase on the honeycomb lattice.

Phase diagrams of spin-$S$ Kitaev ladders

We investigate the ground states of spin-$S$ Kitaev ladders using exact analytical solutions (for $S = 1/2$), perturbation theory, and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We find an even-odd effect: in the case of half-integer $S$, we find phases with spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) and symmetry-protected topological (SPT) order; for integer $S$, we find SSB and trivial paramagnetic phases. We also study the transitions between the various phases; notably, for half-integer $S$ we find a transition between two distinct SPT orders, and for integer $S$ we find unnecessary first order phase transitions within a trivial phase

Uncovering conformal symmetry in the $3D$ Ising transition: State-operator correspondence from a fuzzy sphere regularization

The $3D$ Ising transition, the most celebrated and unsolved critical phenomenon in nature, has long been conjectured to have emergent conformal symmetry, similar to the case of the $2D$ Ising transition. Yet, the emergence of conformal invariance in the $3D$ Ising transition has rarely been explored directly, mainly due to unavoidable mathematical or conceptual obstructions. Here, we design an innovative way to study the quantum version of the $3D$ Ising phase transition on spherical geometry, using the "fuzzy (non-commutative) sphere" regularization. We accurately calculate and analyze the energy spectra at the transition, and explicitly demonstrate the state-operator correspondence (i.e. radial quantization), a fingerprint of conformal field theory. In particular, we have identified 13 parity-even primary operators within a high accuracy and 2 parity-odd operators that were not known before. Our result directly elucidates the emergent conformal symmetry of the $3D$ Ising transition, a conjecture made by Polyakov half a century ago. More importantly, our approach opens a new avenue for studying $3D$ CFTs by making use of the state-operator correspondence and spherical geometry.
