Uncovering conformal symmetry in the $3D$ Ising transition: State-operator correspondence from a fuzzy sphere regularization

The $3D$ Ising transition, the most celebrated and unsolved critical phenomenon in nature, has long been conjectured to have emergent conformal symmetry, similar to the case of the $2D$ Ising transition. Yet, the emergence of conformal invariance in the $3D$ Ising transition has rarely been explored directly, mainly due to unavoidable mathematical or conceptual obstructions. Here, we design an innovative way to study the quantum version of the $3D$ Ising phase transition on spherical geometry, using the "fuzzy (non-commutative) sphere" regularization. We accurately calculate and analyze the energy spectra at the transition, and explicitly demonstrate the state-operator correspondence (i.e. radial quantization), a fingerprint of conformal field theory. In particular, we have identified 13 parity-even primary operators within a high accuracy and 2 parity-odd operators that were not known before. Our result directly elucidates the emergent conformal symmetry of the $3D$ Ising transition, a conjecture made by Polyakov half a century ago. More importantly, our approach opens a new avenue for studying $3D$ CFTs by making use of the state-operator correspondence and spherical geometry.

Non-Abelian currents bootstrap

We initiate the study of correlation functions of non-Abelian spin-1 conserved current in three dimensional conformal field theories using numerical conformal bootstrap. We discuss the general framework and apply it to the particular cases of $SU(N)$ and $O(N)$ global symmetry. In both cases we obtain general bounds on operator dimensions. In the large-$N$ limit our bounds show features in correspondence of the expected position of fermionic QED$_3$ in three dimensions, as well as other interesting theories. By imposing gaps inspired by the spectrum of QED$_3$ at large-$N$, we manage to restrict the plane of certain operator dimensions to a small island, where QED$_3$ must live.

Conformal four-point correlators of the 3D Ising transition via the quantum fuzzy sphere

In conformal field theory (CFT), the four-point correlator is a fundamental object that encodes CFT properties, constrains CFT structures, and connects to the gravitational scattering amplitude in holography theory. However, the four-point correlator of CFTs in dimensions higher than 2D remains largely unexplored due to the lack of non-perturbative tools. In this paper, we introduce a new approach for directly computing four-point correlators of 3D CFTs. Our method employs the recently proposed fuzzy (non-commutative) sphere regularization, and we apply it to the paradigmatic 3D Ising CFT. Specifically, we have computed three different four-point correlators: $\langle σσσσ\rangle$, $\langle σσεε\rangle$, and $\langle σσT_{μν} T_{ρη}\rangle$. Additionally, we verify the crossing symmetry of $\langle σσσσ\rangle$, which is a notable property arising from conformal symmetry. Remarkably, the computed four-point correlators exhibit continuous crossing ratios, showcasing the continuum nature of the fuzzy sphere regularization scheme. This characteristic renders them highly suitable for future theoretical applications, enabling further advancements and insights in 3D CFT.

Slightly broken higher-spin current in bosonic and fermionic QED in the large-$N$ limit

We study the slightly broken higher-spin currents in various CFTs with $\mathrm{U}(1)$ gauge field, including the tricritical QED, scalar QED, fermionic QED and QED-Gross-Neveu-Yukawa theory. We calculate their anomalous dimension by making use of the classical non-conservation equation and the equations of motion. We find a logarithmic asymptotic behaviour ($γ_s\sim 16/(Nπ^2) \log s $) of the anomalous dimension at large spin $s$, which is different from other interacting CFTs without gauge fields and may indicate certain unique features of gauge theories. We also study slightly broken higher-spin currents of the $\mathrm{SU}(N)_1$ WZW model at $d=2+ε$ dimensions by formulating them as the QED theory, and we again find its anomalous dimension has a logarithmic asymptotic behaviour with respect to spin. This result resolves the mystery regarding the mechanism of breaking higher spin currents of Virasoro symmetry at $d=2+ε$ dimensions, and may be applicable to other interesting problems such as the $2+ε$ expansion of Ising CFT.

Operator Product Expansion Coefficients of the 3D Ising Criticality via Quantum Fuzzy Sphere

Conformal field theory (CFT) is the key to various critical phenomena. So far, most of studies focus on the critical exponents of various universalities, corresponding to conformal dimensions of CFT primary fields. However, other important yet intricate data such as the operator product expansion (OPE) coefficients governing the fusion of two primary fields, is largely unexplored before, specifically in dimensions higher than 2D (or equivalently $1+1$D). Here, motivated by the recently-proposed fuzzy sphere regularization, we investigate the operator content of 3D Ising criticality starting from a microscopic description. We first outline the procedure of extracting OPE coefficients on the fuzzy sphere, and then compute 13 OPE coefficients of low-lying CFT primary fields. The obtained results are in agreement with the numerical conformal bootstrap data of 3D Ising CFT within a high accuracy. In addition, we also manage to obtain 4 OPE coefficients including $f_{T_{μν} T_{ρη} ε}$ that were not available before, which demonstrates the superior capabilities of our scheme. By expanding the horizon of the fuzzy sphere regularization from the state perspective to the operator perspective, we expect a lot of new physics ready for exploration.

Topological characterization of Lieb-Schultz-Mattis constraints and applications to symmetry-enriched quantum criticality

Lieb-Schultz-Mattis (LSM) theorems provide powerful constraints on the emergibility problem, i.e. whether a quantum phase or phase transition can emerge in a many-body system. We derive the topological partition functions that characterize the LSM constraints in spin systems with $G_s\times G_{int}$ symmetry, where $G_s$ is an arbitrary space group in one or two spatial dimensions, and $G_{int}$ is any internal symmetry whose projective representations are classified by $\mathbb{Z}_2^k$ with $k$ an integer. We then apply these results to study the emergibility of a class of exotic quantum critical states, including the well-known deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid (DSL), and the recently proposed non-Lagrangian Stiefel liquid. These states can emerge as a consequence of the competition between a magnetic state and a non-magnetic state. We identify all possible realizations of these states on systems with $SO(3)\times \mathbb{Z}_2^T$ internal symmetry and either $p6m$ or $p4m$ lattice symmetry. Many interesting examples are discovered, including a DQCP adjacent to a ferromagnet, stable DSLs on square and honeycomb lattices, and a class of quantum critical spin-quadrupolar liquids of which the most relevant spinful fluctuations carry spin-$2$. In particular, there is a realization of spin-quadrupolar DSL that is beyond the usual parton construction. We further use our formalism to analyze the stability of these states under symmetry-breaking perturbations, such as spin-orbit coupling. As a concrete example, we find that a DSL can be stable in a recently proposed candidate material, NaYbO$_2$.

Phase diagram of a bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 model on the triangular lattice from density matrix renormalization group simulations

We investigate a highly frustrated spin-1 model on the triangular lattice, with nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic $S\cdot S$ interactions and nearest-neighbor $(S\cdot S)^2$ interactions. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, we find three magnetically ordered phases, namely 120$^\circ$ spiral order, stripe order, and tetrahedral order, as well as two spin nematic phases: ferroquadrupolar and antiferroquadrupolar. While our data could be consistent with a spin liquid phase between the 120$^\circ$ spiral and antiferroquadrupolar orders, the more likely scenario is a direct continuous transition between these two orders.

Conformal bootstrap bounds for the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid and $N=7$ Stiefel liquid

We apply the conformal bootstrap technique to study the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid (i.e. $N_f=4$ QED$_3$) and the newly proposed $N=7$ Stiefel liquid (i.e. a conjectured 3d non-Lagrangian CFT without supersymmetry). For the $N_f=4$ QED$_3$, we focus on the monopole operator and ($SU(4)$ adjoint) fermion bilinear operator. We bootstrap their single correlators as well as the mixed correlators between them. We first discuss the bootstrap kinks from single correlators. Some exponents of these bootstrap kinks are close to the expected values of QED$_3$, but we provide clear evidence that they should not be identified as the QED$_3$. By requiring the critical phase to be stable on the triangular and the kagome lattice, we obtain rigorous numerical bounds for the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid and the Stiefel liquid. For the triangular and kagome Dirac spin liquid, the rigorous lower bounds of the monopole operator's scaling dimension are $1.046$ and $1.105$, respectively. These bounds are consistent with the latest Monte Carlo results.

Stiefel Liquids: Possible Non-Lagrangian Quantum Criticality from Intertwined Orders

We propose a new type of quantum liquids, dubbed Stiefel liquids, based on $2+1$ dimensional nonlinear sigma models on target space $SO(N)/SO(4)$, supplemented with Wess-Zumino-Witten terms. We argue that the Stiefel liquids form a class of critical quantum liquids with extraordinary properties, such as large emergent symmetries, a cascade structure, and nontrivial quantum anomalies. We show that the well known deconfined quantum critical point and $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid are unified as two special examples of Stiefel liquids, with $N=5$ and $N=6$, respectively. Furthermore, we conjecture that Stiefel liquids with $N>6$ are non-Lagrangian, in the sense that under renormalization group they flow to infrared (conformally invariant) fixed points that cannot be described by any renormalizable continuum Lagrangian. Such non-Lagrangian states are beyond the paradigm of parton gauge mean-field theory familiar in the study of exotic quantum liquids in condensed matter physics. The intrinsic absence of (conventional or parton-like) mean-field construction also means that, within the traditional approaches, it will be difficult to decide whether a non-Lagrangian state can actually emerge from a specific UV system (such as a lattice spin system). For this purpose we hypothesize that a quantum state is emergible from a lattice system if its quantum anomalies match with the constraints from the (generalized) Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems. Based on this hypothesis, we find that some of the non-Lagrangian Stiefel liquids can indeed be realized in frustrated quantum spin systems, for example, on triangular or Kagome lattice, through the intertwinement between non-coplanar magnetic orders and valence-bond-solid orders.

A roadmap for bootstrapping critical gauge theories: decoupling operators of conformal field theories in $d>2$ dimensions

We propose a roadmap for bootstrapping conformal field theories (CFTs) described by gauge theories in dimensions $d>2$. In particular, we provide a simple and workable answer to the question of how to detect the gauge group in the bootstrap calculation. Our recipe is based on the notion of \emph{decoupling operator}, which has a simple (gauge) group theoretical origin, and is reminiscent of the null operator of $2d$ Wess-Zumino-Witten CFTs in higher dimensions. Using the decoupling operator we can efficiently detect the rank (i.e. color number) of gauge groups, e.g., by imposing gap conditions in the CFT spectrum. We also discuss the physics of the equation of motion, which has interesting consequences in the CFT spectrum as well. As an application of our recipes, we study a prototypical critical gauge theory, namely the scalar QED which has a $U(1)$ gauge field interacting with critical bosons. We show that the scalar QED can be solved by conformal bootstrap, namely we have obtained its kinks and islands in both $d=3$ and $d=2+ε$ dimensions.

Unifying Description of Competing Orders in Two Dimensional Quantum Magnets

Quantum magnets provide the simplest example of strongly interacting quantum matter, yet they continue to resist a comprehensive understanding above one spatial dimension (1D). In 1D, a key ingredient to progress is Luttinger liquid theory which provides a unified description. Here we explore a promising analogous framework in two dimensions, the Dirac spin liquid (DSL), which can be constructed on several different lattices. The DSL is a version of Quantum Electrodynamics ( QED$_3$) with four flavors of Dirac fermions coupled to photons. Importantly, its excitations also include magnetic monopoles that drive confinement. By calculating the complete action of symmetries on monopoles on the square, honeycomb, triangular and kagomè lattices, we answer previously open key questions. We find that the stability of the DSL is enhanced on the triangular and kagomè lattices as compared to the bipartite (square and honeycomb) lattices. We obtain the universal signatures of the DSL on the triangular and kagomè lattices, including those that result from monopole excitations, which serve as a guide to numerics and to experiments on existing materials. Interestingly, the familiar 120 degree magnetic orders on these lattices can be obtained from monopole proliferation. Even when unstable, the Dirac spin liquid unifies multiple ordered states which could help organize the plethora of phases observed in strongly correlated two-dimensional materials.

Non-Wilson-Fisher kinks of $O(N)$ numerical bootstrap: from the deconfined phase transition to a putative new family of CFTs

It is well established that the $O(N)$ Wilson-Fisher (WF) CFT sits at a kink of the numerical bounds from bootstrapping four point function of $O(N)$ vector. Moving away from the WF kinks, there indeed exists another family of kinks (dubbed non-WF kinks) on the curve of $O(N)$ numerical bounds. Different from the $O(N)$ WF kinks that exist for arbitary $N$ in $2 N_c(d)$ in a given dimension $d$. In this paper we have achieved a thorough understanding for few special cases of these non-WF kinks. The first case is the $O(4)$ bootstrap in 2d, where the non-WF kink turns out to be the $SU(2)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) model, and all the $SU(2)_{k>2}$ WZW models saturate the numerical bound on the left side of the kink. We further carry out dimensional continuation of the 2d $SU(2)_1$ kink towards the 3d $SO(5)$ deconfined phase transition. We find the kink disappears at around $d=2.7$ dimensions indicating the $SO(5)$ deconfined phase transition is weakly first order. The second interesting observation is, the $O(2)$ bootstrap bound does not show any kink in 2d ($N_c=2$), but is surprisingly saturated by the 2d free boson CFT (also called Luttinger liquid) all the way on the numerical curve. The last case is the $N=\infty$ limit, where the non-WF kink sits at $(Δ_ϕ, Δ_T)=(d-1, 2d)$ in $d$ dimensions. We manage to write down its analytical four point function in arbitrary dimensions, which equals to the subtraction of correlation functions of a free fermion theory and generalized free theory. An important feature of this solution is the existence of a full tower of conserved higher spin current. We speculate that a new family of CFTs will emerge at non-WF kinks for finite $N$, in a similar fashion as $O(N)$ WF CFTs originating from free boson at $N=\infty$.

Electric polarization as a nonquantized topological response and boundary Luttinger theorem

We develop a nonperturbative approach to the bulk polarization of crystalline electric insulators in $d\geq1$ dimensions. Formally, we define polarization via the response to background fluxes of both charge and lattice translation symmetries. In this approach, the bulk polarization is related to properties of magnetic monopoles under translation symmetries. Specifically, in $2d$ the monopole is a source of $2π$-flux, and the polarization is determined by the crystal momentum of the $2π$-flux. In $3d$ the polarization is determined by the projective representation of translation symmetries on Dirac monopoles. Our approach also leads to a concrete scheme to calculate polarization in $2d$, which in principle can be applied even to strongly interacting systems. For open boundary condition, the bulk polarization leads to an altered `boundary' Luttinger theorem (constraining the Fermi surface of surface states) and also to modified Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems on the boundary, which we derive.

Emergent QCD$_3$ Quantum Phase Transitions of Fractional Chern Insulators

Motivated by the recent work of QED$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum critical points of fractional Chern insulators (Phys. Rev. X \textbf{8}, 031015, (2018)), we study its non-Abelian generalizations, namely QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum phase transitions of fractional Chern insulators. These phase transitions are described by Dirac fermions interacting with non-Abelian Chern-Simons gauge fields ($U(N)$, $SU(N)$, $USp(N)$, etc.). Utilizing the level-rank duality of Chern-Simons gauge theory and non-Abelian parton constructions, we discuss two types of QCD$_3$ quantum phase transitions. The first type happens between two Abelian states in different Jain sequences, as opposed to the QED3 transitions between Abelian states in the same Jain sequence. A good example is the transition between $σ^{xy}=1/3$ state and $σ^{xy}=-1$ state, which has $N_f=2$ Dirac fermions interacting with a $U(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge field. The second type is naturally involving non-Abelian states. For the sake of experimental feasibility, we focus on transitions of Pfaffian-like states, including the Moore-Read Pfaffian, anti-Pfaffian, particle-hole Pfaffian, etc. These quantum phase transitions could be realized in experimental systems such as fractional Chern insulators in graphene heterostructures.

Field-induced QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons quantum criticalities in Kitaev materials

Kitaev materials are promising for realizing exotic quantum spin liquid phases, such as a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. Motivated by recent experiments in these materials, we theoretically study the novel field-induced quantum phase transitions from the non-Abelian chiral spin liquid to the symmetry-broken zigzag phase and to the trivial polarized state. Utilizing the recently developed dualities of gauge theories, we find these transitions can be described by critical bosons or gapless fermions coupled to emergent non-Abelian gauge fields, and the critical theories are of the type of a QCD$_3$-Chern-Simons theory. We propose that all these exotic quantum phase transitions can potentially be direct and continuous in Kitaev materials, and we present sound evidence for this proposal. Therefore, besides being systems with intriguing quantum magnetism, Kitaev materials may also serve as table-top experimental platforms to study the interesting dynamics of emergent strongly interacting quarks and gluons in $2+1$ dimensions.

Dirac Spin Liquid on the Spin-1/2 Triangular Heisenberg Antiferromagnet

We study the spin liquid candidate of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the triangular lattice by means of density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations. By applying an external Aharonov-Bohm flux insertion in an infinitely long cylinder, we find unambiguous evidence for gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid behavior. The flux insertion overcomes the finite size restriction for energy gaps and clearly shows gapless behavior at the expected wave-vectors. Using the DMRG transfer matrix, the low-lying excitation spectrum can be extracted, which shows characteristic Dirac cone structures of both spinon-bilinear and monopole excitations. Finally, we confirm that the entanglement entropy follows the predicted universal response under the flux insertion.

Entanglement Hamiltonian of Many-body Dynamics in Strongly-correlated Systems

A powerful perspective in understanding non-equilibrium quantum dynamics is through the time evolution of its entanglement content. Yet apart from a few guiding principles for the entanglement entropy, to date, not much else is known about the refined characters of entanglement propagation. Here, we unveil signatures of the entanglement evolving and information propagation out-of-equilibrium, from the view of entanglement Hamiltonian. As a prototypical example, we study quantum quench dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model by means of time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group simulation. Before reaching equilibration, it is found that a current operator emerges in entanglement Hamiltonian, implying that entanglement spreading is carried by particle flow. In the long-time limit subsystem enters a steady phase, evidenced by the dynamic convergence of the entanglement Hamiltonian to the expectation of a thermal ensemble. Importantly, entanglement temperature of steady state is spatially independent, which provides an intuitive trait of equilibrium. We demonstrate that these features are consistent with predictions from conformal field theory. These findings not only provide crucial information on how equilibrium statistical mechanics emerges in many-body dynamics, but also add a tool to exploring quantum dynamics from perspective of entanglement Hamiltonian.

Shadow of complex fixed point: Approximate conformality of Q>4 Potts model

We study the famous example of weakly first order phase transitions in the 1+1D quantum Q-state Potts model at Q>4. We numerically show that these weakly first order transitions have approximately conformal invariance. Specifically, we find entanglement entropy on considerably large system sizes fits perfectly with the universal scaling law of this quantity in the conformal field theories (CFTs). This supports that the weakly first order transitions is proximate to complex fixed points, which are described by recent conjectured complex CFTs. Moreover, the central charge extracted from this fitting is close to the real part of the complex central charge of these complex CFTs. We also study the conformal towers and the drifting behaviors of these conformal data (e.g., central charge and scaling dimensions).
