From spinon band topology to the symmetry quantum numbers of monopoles in Dirac spin liquids

The interplay of symmetry and topology has been at the forefront of recent progress in quantum matter. Here we uncover an unexpected connection between band topology and the description of competing orders in a quantum magnet. Specifically we show that aspects of band topology protected by crystalline symmetries determine key properties of the Dirac spin liquid (DSL) which can be defined on the honeycomb, square, triangular and kagomé lattices. At low energies, the DSL on all these lattices is described by an emergent Quantum Electrodynamics (QED$_3$) with $N_f=4$ flavors of Dirac fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field. However the symmetry properties of the magnetic monopoles, an important class of critical degrees of freedom, behave very differently on different lattices. In particular, we show that the lattice momentum and angular momentum of monopoles can be determined from the charge (or Wannier) centers of the corresponding spinon insulator. We also show that for DSLs on bipartite lattices, there always exists a monopole that transforms trivially under all microscopic symmetries owing to the existence of a parent SU(2) gauge theory. We connect our results to generalized Lieb-Schultz-Mattis theorems and also derive the time-reversal and reflection properties of monopoles. Our results indicate that recent insights into free fermion band topology can also guide the description of strongly correlated quantum matter.

Continuous easy-plane deconfined phase transition on the kagome lattice

We use large scale quantum Monte-Carlo simulations to study an extended Hubbard model of hardcore bosons on the kagome lattice. In the limit of strong nearest-neighbor interactions at 1/3 filling, the interplay between frustration and quantum fluctuations leads to a valence bond solid ground state. The system undergoes a quantum phase transition to a superfluid phase as the interaction strength is decreased. It is still under debate whether the transition is weakly first order or represents an unconventional continuous phase transition. We present a theory in terms of an easy-plane NCCP$^1$ gauge theory describing the phase transition at 1/3 filling. Utilizing large scale quantum Monte-Carlo simulations with parallel tempering in the canonical ensemble up to 15552 spins, we provide evidence that the phase transition is continuous at exactly 1/3 filling. A careful finite size scaling analysis reveals an unconventional scaling behavior hinting at deconfined quantum criticality.

Emergent Multi-flavor QED3 at the Plateau Transition between Fractional Chern Insulators: Applications to graphene heterostructures

Recent experiments in graphene heterostructures have observed Chern insulators - integer and fractional Quantum Hall states made possible by a periodic substrate potential. Here we study theoretically the competition between different Chern insulators, which can be tuned by the amplitude of the periodic potential, leads to a new family of quantum critical points described by QED$_3$-Chern-Simons theory. At these critical points, $N_f$ flavors of Dirac fermions interact through an emergent U$(1)$ gauge theory at Chern-Simons level $K$, and remarkably, the entire family (with any $N_f$ or $K$) can be realized at special values of the external magnetic field. Transitions between particle-hole conjugate Jain states realize "pure" QED$_3$ in which multiple flavors of Dirac fermion interact with a Maxwell U$(1)$ gauge field. The multi-flavor nature of the critical point leads to an emergent SU$(N_f)$ symmetry. Specifically, at the transition from a $ν=$1/3 to 2/3 quantum Hall state, the emergent SU(3) symmetry predicts an octet of charge density waves with enhanced susceptibilities, which is verified by DMRG numerical simulations on microscopic models applicable to graphene heterostructures. We propose experiments on Chern insulators that could resolve open questions in the study of 2+1 dimensional conformal field theories and test recent duality inspired conjectures.

Entanglement signatures of emergent Dirac fermions: kagome spin liquid & quantum criticality

Quantum spin liquids (QSL) are exotic phases of matter that host fractionalized excitations. It is difficult for local probes to characterize QSL, whereas quantum entanglement can serve as a powerful diagnostic tool due to its non-locality. The kagome antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model is one of the most studied and experimentally relevant models for QSL, but its solution remains under debate. Here, we perform a numerical Aharonov-Bohm experiment on this model and uncover universal features of the entanglement entropy. By means of the density-matrix renormalization group, we reveal the entanglement signatures of emergent Dirac spinons, which are the fractionalized excitations of the QSL. This scheme provides qualitative insights into the nature of kagome QSL, and can be used to study other quantum states of matter. As a concrete example, we also benchmark our methods on an interacting quantum critical point between a Dirac semimetal and a charge ordered phase.

Critical behavior of the QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu model: Duality and deconfined criticality

We study the critical properties of the QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu model with $2N$ flavors of two-component Dirac fermions coupled to a massless scalar field and a U(1) gauge field. For $N=1$, this theory has recently been suggested to be dual to the SU(2) noncompact CP$^1$ model that describes the deconfined phase transition between the Neel antiferromagnet and the valence bond solid on the square lattice. For $N=2$, the theory has been proposed as an effective description of a deconfined critical point between chiral and Dirac spin liquid phases, and may potentially be realizable in spin-$1/2$ systems on the kagome lattice. We demonstrate the existence of a stable quantum critical point in the QED$_3$-Gross-Neveu model for all values of $N$. This quantum critical point is shown to escape the notorious fixed-point annihilation mechanism that renders plain QED$_3$ (without scalar-field coupling) unstable at low values of $N$. The theory exhibits an upper critical space-time dimension of four, enabling us to access the critical behavior in a controlled expansion in the small parameter $ε= 4-D$. We compute the scalar-field anomalous dimension $η_ϕ$, the correlation-length exponent $ν$, as well as the scaling dimension of the flavor-symmetry-breaking bilinear $\barψσ^zψ$ at the critical point, and compare our leading-order estimates with predictions of the conjectured duality.

Symmetric Fermion Mass Generation as Deconfined Quantum Criticality

Massless 2+1D Dirac fermions arise in a variety of systems from graphene to the surfaces of topological insulators, where generating a mass is typically associated with breaking a symmetry. However, with strong interactions, a symmetric gapped phase can arise for multiples of eight Dirac fermions. A continuous quantum phase transition from the massless Dirac phase to this massive phase, which we term Symmetric Mass Generation (SMG), is necessarily beyond the Landau paradigm and is hard to describe even at the conceptual level. Nevertheless, such transition has been consistently observed in several numerical studies recently. Here, we propose a theory for the SMG transition which is reminiscent of deconfined criticality and involves emergent non-Abelian gauge fields coupled both to Dirac fermions and to critical Higgs bosons. We motivate the theory using an explicit parton construction and discuss predictions for numerics. Additionally, we show that the fermion Green's function is expected to undergo a zero to pole transition across the critical point.

From Bosonic Topological Transition to Symmetric Fermion Mass Generation

The bosonic topological transition (BTT) is a quantum critical point between the bosonic symmetry protected topological phase and the trivial phase. In this work, we derive a description of this transition in terms of compact quantum electrodynamics (QED) with four fermion flavors ($N_f=4$). This allows us to describe the transition in a lattice model with the maximal microscopic symmetry: an internal SO(4) symmetry. Within a systematic renormalization group analysis, we identify the critical point with the desired O(4) emergent symmetry and all expected deformations. By lowering the microscopic symmetry we recover the previous $N_f=2$ non-compact QED description of the BTT. Finally, by merging two BTTs we recover a previously discussed theory of symmetric mass generation, as an SU(2) quantum chromodynamics-Higgs theory with $N_f=4$ flavors of SU(2) fundamental fermions and one SU(2) fundamental Higgs boson. This provides a consistency check on both theories.

Stability of the spin-$1/2$ kagome ground state with breathing anisotropy

We numerically study the spin-$1/2$ breathing kagome lattice. In this variation of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the spins belonging to upward and downward facing triangles have different coupling strengths. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and exact diagonalization, we show that the kagome antiferromagnet spin liquid is extremely robust to this anisotropy. Materials featuring this anisotropy -- and especially the recently studied vanadium compound $[{\mathrm{NH}}_{4}{]}_{2}[{\mathbf{C}}_{7}{\mathbf{H}}_{14}\mathbf{N}][{\mathbf{V}}_{7}{\mathbf{O}}_{6}{\mathbf{F}}_{18}]$ (DQVOF) -- may thus be very good candidates to realize the much studied kagome spin liquid. Further, we closely examine the limit of strong breathing anisotropy and find indications of a transition to a nematic phase.

Realizing and Adiabatically Preparing Bosonic Integer and Fractional Quantum Hall states in Optical Lattices

We study the ground states of 2D lattice bosons in an artificial gauge field. Using state of the art DMRG simulations we obtain the zero temperature phase diagram for hardcore bosons at densities $n_b$ with flux $n_ϕ$ per unit cell, which determines a filling $ν=n_b/n_ϕ$. We find several robust quantum Hall phases, including (i) a bosonic integer quantum Hall phase (BIQH) at $ν=2$, that realizes an interacting symmetry protected topological phase in 2D (ii) bosonic fractional quantum Hall phases including robust states at $ν=2/3$ and a Laughlin state at $ν=1/2$. The observed states correspond to the bosonic Jain sequence ($ν=p/(p+1)$) pointing towards an underlying composite fermion picture. In addition to identifying Hamiltonians whose ground states realize these phases, we discuss their preparation beginning from independent chains, and ramping up interchain couplings. Using time dependent DMRG simulations, these are shown to reliably produce states close to the ground state for experimentally relevant system sizes. Besides the wave-function overlap, we utilize a simple physical signature of these phases, the non-monotonic behavior of a two-point correlation, a direct consequence of edge states in a finite system, to numerically assess the effectiveness of the preparation scheme. Our proposal only utilizes existing experimental capabilities.

Kagome spin liquid: a deconfined critical phase driven by $U(1)$ gauge fluctuation

We investigate the nature of quantum spin liquid (QSL) phase of the spin-$1/2$ nearest-neighbor XXZ antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice. Recent numerical calculations suggest that such a kagome spin liquid is insensitive to the XXZ anisotropy and is adjacent to a chiral spin liquid phase. Reformulating the problem in terms of a $U(1)$ lattice gauge theory with dynamical bosonic spinons, we propose that the kagome spin liquid can be understood as a deconfined critical phase extended by the $U(1)$ gauge fluctuation from a deconfined critical point between a symmetry-protected topological phase and a superfluid phase. Crucially, the stability of this QSL is ensured by the gauge fluctuation and hence our description necessarily falls beyond the conventional mean-field constructions of QSLs. Our work also makes an interesting connection between the critical spin liquid, deconfined criticality, symmetry protected topological phase and topological order.

Signatures of Dirac cones in a DMRG study of the Kagome Heisenberg model

The antiferromagnetic spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice is one of the most paradigmatic models in the context of spin liquids, yet the precise nature of its ground state is not understood. We use large scale density matrix normalization group simulations (DMRG) on infinitely long cylinders and find indications for the formation of a gapless Dirac spin liquid. First, we use adiabatic flux insertion to demonstrate that the spin gap is much smaller than estimated from previous DMRG simulation. Second, we find that the momentum dependent excitation spectrum, as extracted from the DMRG transfer matrix, exhibits Dirac cones that match those of a $π$-flux free fermion model (the parton mean-field ansatz of a $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid)

Bridging coupled wires and lattice Hamiltonian for two-component bosonic quantum Hall states

We investigate a model of hard-core bosons with correlated hopping on the honeycomb lattice in an external magnetic field by means of a coupled-wire approach. It has been numerically shown that this model exhibits at half filling the bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) state, which is a symmetry-protected topological phase protected by the $U(1)$ particle conservation [Y.-C. He et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 116803 (2015)]. By combining the bosonization approach and a coupled-wire construction, we analytically confirm this finding and show that it even holds in the strongly anisotropic (quasi-one-dimensional) limit. We discuss the stability of the BIQH phase against tunneling that break the separate particle conservations on different sublattices down to a global particle conservation. We further argue that a phase transition between two different BIQH phases is in a deconfined quantum critical point described by two copies of the (2+1)-dimensional $O(4)$ nonlinear sigma model with the topological $θ$ term at $θ=π$. Finally we predict a possible fractional quantum Hall state, the Halperin (221) state, at 1/6 filling.

Kagome chiral spin liquid as a gauged U(1) symmetry protected topological phase

While the existence of a chiral spin liquid (CSL) on a class of spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnets is by now well-established numerically, a controlled theoretical path from the lattice model leading to a low energy topological field theory is still lacking. This we provide via an explicit construction, starting from reformulating a microscopic model for a CSL as a lattice gauge theory, and deriving the low-energy form of its continuum limit. A crucial ingredient is the realisation that the bosonic spinons of the gauge theory exhibit a $U(1)$ symmetry-protected topological (SPT) phase, which upon promoting its $U(1)$ global symmetry to a local gauge structure ("gauging") yields the CSL. We suggest that such an explicit lattice-based construction involving gauging of an SPT phase can be applied more generally to understand topological spin liquids.

Bosonic Integer Quantum Hall effect in an interacting lattice model

We study a bosonic model with correlated hopping on a honeycomb lattice, and show that its ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) phase, a prominent example of a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. By using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, we establish the existence of the BIQH phase by providing clear numerical evidence: (i) a quantized Hall conductance with $|σ_{xy}|= 2$ (ii) two counter propagating gapless edge modes. Our simple model is an example of a novel class of systems that can stabilize SPT phases protected by a continuous symmetry on lattices and opens up new possibilities for the experimental realization of these exotic phases.

Distinct Spin Liquids and their Transitions in Spin-1/2 XXZ Kagome Antiferromagnets

By using the density matrix renormalization group, we study the spin-liquid phases of spin-$1/2$ XXZ kagome antiferromagnets. We find that the emergence of spin liquid phase does not depend on the anisotropy of the XXZ interaction. In particular, the two extreme limits---Ising (strong $S^z$ interaction) and XY (zero $S^z$ interaction)---host the same spin-liquid phases as the isotropic Heisenberg model. Both the time-reversal-invariant spin liquid and the chiral spin liquid with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking are obtained. We show they evolve continuously into each other by tuning the second- and third-neighbor interactions. At last, we discuss the possible implication of our results on the nature of spin liquid in nearest neighbor XXZ kagome antiferromagnets, including the most studied nearest neighbor spin-$1/2$ kagome anti-ferromagnetic Heisenberg model.

Chiral spin liquid in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model

Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) chiral spin liquid (CSL) is a type of quantum spin liquid without time-reversal symmetry, and it is considered as the parent state of an exotic type of superconductivity--anyon superconductor. Such exotic state has been sought for more than twenty years, however it remains unclear whether it can exist in realistic system where time-reversal symmetry is breaking (T-breaking) spontaneously. By using the density matrix renormalization group, we show that KL CSL exists in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model (KHM), which has spontaneously T-breaking. We find that our model has two topological degenerate ground states, which exhibit non-vanishing scalar chirality order and are protected by finite excitation gap. Further, we identify this state as KL CSL by the characteristic edge conformal field theory from the entanglement spectrum and the quasiparticles braiding statistics extracted from the modular matrix. We also study how this CSL phase evolves as the system approaches the nearest neighbor KHM.

Obtaining topological degenerate ground states by the density matrix renormalization group

We develop the density matrix renormalization group approach to systematically identify the topological order of the quantum spin liquid (QSL) through adiabatically obtaining different topological sectors of the QSL on an infinite cylinder. As an application, we study the anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model known for hosting a Z$_2$ QSL, however no numerical simulations have been able to access all four sectors before. We obtain the complete set of four topological degenerate ground states distinguished by the presence or absence of the spinon and vison quasiparticle line, which fully characterizes the topological nature of the quantum phase. We have also studied the kagome Heisenberg model, which has attracted a lot of recent attention. We find two topological sectors accurately and also estimate various properties of the other topological sectors, where the larger correlation length is found indicating the possible proximity to another phase.

Measuring Majorana fermions qubit state and non-Abelian braiding statistics in quenched inhomogeneous spin ladders

We study the Majorana fermions (MFs) in a spin ladder model. We propose and numerically show that the MFs qubit state can be read out by measuring the fusion excitation in the quenched inhomogeneous spin ladders. Moreover, we construct an exactly solvable T-junction spin ladder model, which can be used to implement braiding operations of MFs. With the braiding processes simulated numerically as non-equilibrium quench processes, we verify that the MFs in our spin ladder model obey the non-Abelian braiding statistics. Our scheme not only provides a promising platform to study the exotic properties of MFs, but also has broad range of applications in topological quantum computation.
