Open book structures on semi-algebraic manifolds

Given a $C^2$ semi-algebraic mapping $F: \mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^p,$ we consider its restriction to $W\hookrightarrow \mathbb{R^{N}}$ an embedded closed semi-algebraic manifold of dimension $n-1\geq p\geq 2$ and introduce sufficient conditions for the existence of a fibration structure (generalized open book structure) induced by the projection $\frac{F}{\Vert F \Vert}:W\setminus F^{-1}(0)\to S^{p-1}$. Moreover, we show that the well known local and global Milnor fibrations, in the real and complex settings, follow as a byproduct by considering $W$ as spheres of small and big radii, respectively. Furthermore, we consider the composition mapping of $F$ with the canonical projection $π: \mathbb{R}^{p} \to \mathbb{R}^{p-1}$ and prove that the fibers of $\frac{F}{\Vert F \Vert}$ and $\frac{π\circ F}{\Vert π\circ F \Vert}$ are homotopy equivalent. We also show several formulae relating the Euler characteristics of the fiber of the projection $\frac{F}{\Vert F \Vert}$ and $W\cap F^{-1}(0).$ Similar formulae are proved for mappings obtained after composition of $F$ with canonical projections.

Non-perturbative renormalization of overlap quark bilinears on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations

We present renormalization constants of overlap quark bilinear operators on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations. This setup is being used by the chiQCD collaboration in calculations of physical quantities such as strangeness in the nucleon and the strange and charm quark masses. The scale independent renormalization constant for the axial vector current is computed using the Ward Identity. The renormalization constants for scalar, pseudoscalar and vector current are calculated in the RI-MOM scheme. Results in the MS-bar scheme are also given. The step scaling function of quark masses in the RI-MOM scheme is computed as well. The analysis uses, in total, six different ensembles of three sea quarks each on two lattices with sizes 24^3x64 and 32^3x64 at spacings a=(1.73 GeV)^{-1} and (2.28 GeV)^{-1}, respectively.

Oscillatory behavior of the domain wall fermions revisited

In the generic domain wall fermion formulation of chiral fermions on the lattice, the zero modes of the four-dimensional Wilson fermion operator with the negative mass parameter $-M_5$ introduce unphysical massive modes propagating in the four-dimensional spacetime. In the free fermion case, the pole mass of this kind of unphysical modes is given by $\tilde{E}=\ln(1-M_5)$, which acquires an imaginary part, $iπ$, when $M_5>1$ and results in an oscillatory behavior of the domain wall fermion propagator in time. The existence of the unphysical modes in the presence of gauge fields is investigated in the mean field approximation, and their physical consequences are discussed. In addition, we also give a semiquantitative criterion for tuning $M_5$ in the realistic numerical study.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System And the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy scattering of the $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermion configurations with three pion mass values. The calculation is performed within single-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the $s$-wave scattering in $J^P=1^+$ channel are extracted. For the cases in our study, the interaction between the two charmed mesons is weakly repulsive. Our lattice results therefore do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons for the pion mass values we studied. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ by various experimental groups.

The Roper Puzzle

We carried out a calculation of the Roper state with the Sequential Empirical Bayesian (SEB) method with overlap valence fermion on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion configurations on the 24^3 x 64 lattice with a^{-1} = 1.73 GeV. The light sea quark mass corresponds to a pion mass of 330 MeV. The mass of the Roper, chirally extrapolated to the physical pion mass, is 1404(112) MeV which is consistent with the experimental value at 1440 MeV. When compared to the Roper state calculation with variational method for Clover and twisted mass fermions, it is found that the Roper states from SEB with overlap fermion are systematically lower by 400 - 800 MeV for all the quark masses ranging from light to the strange mass region. We study the origin of the difference by exploring the size of the interpolation field in relation to the radial wavefunction of the Roper and also the dynamical influence of the higher Fock space.

Strong Oxidation Resistance of Atomically Thin Boron Nitride Nanosheets

Investigation on oxidation resistance of two-dimensional (2D) materials is critical for many of their applications, because 2D materials could have higher oxidation kinetics than their bulk counterparts due to predominant surface atoms and structural distortions. In this study, the oxidation behavior of high-quality boron nitride (BN) nanosheets of 1-4 layer thick has been examined by heating in air. Atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy analyses reveal that monolayer BN nanosheets can sustain up to 850 °C and the starting temperature of oxygen doping/oxidation of BN nanosheets only slightly increases with the increase of nanosheet layer and depends on heating conditions. Elongated etch lines are found on the oxidized monolayer BN nanosheets, suggesting that the BN nanosheets are first cut along the chemisorbed oxygen chains and then the oxidative etching grows perpendicularly to these cut lines. The stronger oxidation resistance of BN nanosheets suggests that they are more preferable for high-temperature applications than graphene.

Glueballs in charmonia radiative decays

Scalar \cite{scalar_paper} and tensor \cite{tensor_paper} glueballs created in $J/ψ$ radiative decays are studied in quenched lattice QCD. Using two anisotropic lattices to approach the continuum limit, we compute the relevant form factors responsible for the decay rates for $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{0^{++}}$ and $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{2^{++}}$. Comparing with the existing experimental data, it is argued that $f_0(1710)$ is a favorable candidate for scalar glueball. The decay rate for $J/ψ\rightarrowγG_{2^{++}}$ is found to be quite substantial. A comprehensive search in the tensor channel on BESIII is therefore suggested.

Real polynomial maps and singular open books at infinity

We provide significant conditions under which we prove the existence of stable open book structures at infinity, i.e. on spheres $S^{m-1}_R$ of large enough radius $R$. We obtain new classes of real polynomial maps $\mathbb R^m \to \mathbb R^p$ which induce such structures.

Non-perturbative renormalization of overlap quark bilinears on domain wall fermion configurations

We present renormalization constants of overlap quark bilinear operators on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations. Both overlap and domain wall fermions have chiral symmetry on the lattice. The scale independent renormalization constant for the local axial vector current is computed using a Ward Identity. The renormalization constants for the scalar, pseudoscalar and vector current are calculated in the RI-MOM scheme. Results in the MS-bar scheme are obtained by using perturbative conversion ratios. The analysis uses in total six ensembles with lattice sizes 24^3x64 and 32^3x64.

Can we predict the mutation rate at the single nucleotide scale in the human genome?

It has been recently claimed that it is possible to predict the rate of de novo mutation of each site in the human genome with almost perfect accuracy (Michaelson et al. (2012) Cell, 151, 1431-1442). We show that this claim is unwarranted. By considering the correlation between the rate of de novo mutation and the predictions from the model of Michaelson et al., we show that there could be substantial unexplained variance in the mutation rate. We also demonstrate that the model of Michaelson et al. fails to capture a major component of the variation in the mutation rate, that which is local but not associated with simple context.

Singular open book structures from real mappings

We prove extensions of Milnor's theorem for germs with nonisolated singularity and use them to find new classes of genuine real analytic mappings $ψ$ with positive dimensional singular locus $\Sing ψ\subset ψ^{-1}(0)$, for which the Milnor fibration exists and yields an open book structure with singular binding.

Extending the nuclear chart by continuum: from oxygen to titanium

Nuclear masses ranging from O to Ti isotopes are systematically investigated with relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory, which can provide a proper treatment of pairing correlations in the presence of the continuum. From O to Ti isotopes, there are 402 nuclei predicted to be bound by the density functional PC-PK1. For the 234 nuclei with mass measured, the root mean square (rms) deviation is 2.23 MeV. It is found that the proton drip-lines predicted with various mass models are roughly the same and basically agree with the observation. The neutron drip-lines predicted, however, are quite different. Due to the continuum couplings, the neutron drip-line nuclei predicted are extended further neutron-rich than other mass models. By comparison with finite-range droplet model (FRDM), the neutron drip-line nucleus predicted by RCHB theory has respectively 2(O), 10(Ne), 10(Na), 6(Mg), 8(Al), 6(Si), 8(P), 6(S), 14(K), 10(Ca), 10(Sc), and 12(Ti) more neutrons.

Lattice Study of Radiative $J/ψ$ Decay to a Tensor Glueball

The radiative decay of $J/ψ$ into a pure gauge tensor glueball is studied in the quenched lattice QCD formalism. With two anisotropic lattices, the mutlipole amplitudes E_1(0), M_2(0) and E_3(0) are obtained to be 0.114(12)(6)GeV, -0.011(5)(1)GeV, and 0.023(8)(1)GeV, respectively. The first error comes from the statistics, the Q^2 interpolation, and the continuum extrapolation, while the second is due to the uncertainty of the scale parameter r_0^{-1}=410(20) MeV. Thus the partial decay width $Γ(J/ψ\rightarrow γG_{2^{++}})$ is estimated to be 1.01(22)(10) keV which corresponds to a large branch ratio 1.1(2)(1)x10^{-2}. The phenomenological implication of this result is also discussed.

Pairing strength on the nuclear size in relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory

The influence of pairing correlations on the nuclear size and in particular on the formation of nuclear halos is studied in the framework of relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov (RCHB) theory. It turns out that the contributions from the weakly-bound orbits with low orbital angular momenta $l$ play an important role. As an example, we investigate the neutron-rich Mg isotopes as a function of the pairing strength in situations, where the neuron Fermi surface are below, between and above two weakly-bound $2p$ levels. We find that the size of the pairing correlations has a two-fold influence on the density distribution of the neutrons and therefore on the total nuclear size. First it can change the root mean square (rms) radius of the individual weakly-bound orbits and second it can enhance the occupation probabilities of these orbits in the nuclear system. On one side increasing pairing correlations reduce the rms radii of the orbits with small orbital angular momenta close to the continuum limit (pairing anti-halo effect), on the other side they also can lead to an enhanced occupation of low-$l$ orbits above the Fermi surface producing in this way a strong increase of the total radius of the nuclear system. As a consequence, a nuclear halo can form even in cases, where non of the individual low-$l$ orbits is very close to the continuum. This leads to the fact that compared with well-bound nuclei, the impact of the pairing strength on the nuclear size is more pronounced in weakly-bound nuclei than in well-bound systems.

Invertible polynomial mappings via Newton non-degeneracy

We prove a sufficient condition for the Jacobian problem in the setting of real, complex and mixed polynomial mappings. This follows from the study of the bifurcation locus of a mapping subject to a new Newton non-degeneracy condition.

Spread spectrum compressed sensing MRI using chirp radio frequency pulses

Compressed sensing has shown great potential in reducing data acquisition time in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Recently, a spread spectrum compressed sensing MRI method modulates an image with a quadratic phase. It performs better than the conventional compressed sensing MRI with variable density sampling, since the coherence between the sensing and sparsity bases are reduced. However, spread spectrum in that method is implemented via a shim coil which limits its modulation intensity and is not convenient to operate. In this letter, we propose to apply chirp (linear frequency-swept) radio frequency pulses to easily control the spread spectrum. To accelerate the image reconstruction, an alternating direction algorithm is modified by exploiting the complex orthogonality of the quadratic phase encoding. Reconstruction on the acquired data demonstrates that more image features are preserved using the proposed approach than those of conventional CS-MRI.

Is $1^-+$ Meson a Hybrid?

We calculate the vacuum to meson matrix elements of the dimension-4 operator $\barψγ_4\nblr_i ψ$ and dimension-5 operator $\barψ\epsγ_jψB_k$ of the $1^{-+}$ meson on the lattice and compare them to the corresponding matrix elements of the ordinary mesons to discern if it is a hybrid. For the charmoniums and strange quarkoniums, we find that the matrix elements of $1^{-+}$ are comparable in size as compared to other known $q\bar{q}$ mesons. They are particularly similar to those of the $2^{++}$ meson, since their dimension-4 operators are in the same Lorentz multiplet. Based on these observations, we find no evidence to support the notion that the lowest $1^{-+}$ mesons in the $c\bar{c}$ and $s\bar{s}$ regions are hybrids. As for the exotic quantum number is concerned, the non-relativistic reduction reveals that the leading terms in the dimension-4 and dimension-5 operators of $1^{-+}$ are identical up to a proportional constant and it involves a center-of-mass momentum operator of the quark-antiquark pair. This explains why $1^{-+}$ is an exotic quantum number in the constituent quark model where the center of mass of the $q\bar{q}$ is not a dynamical degree of freedom. Since QCD has gluon fields in the context of the flux-tube which is appropriate for heavy quarkoniums to allow the valence $q\bar{q}$ to recoil against them, it can accommodate such states as $1^{-+}$. By the same token, hadronic models with additional constituents besides the quarks can also accommodate the $q\bar{q}$ center-of-mass motion. To account for the quantum numbers of these $q\bar{q}$ mesons in QCD and hadron models in the non-relativistic case, the parity and total angular momentum should be modified to $P = (-)^{L + l +1}$ and $\vec{J} = \vec{L} + \vec{l} + \vec{S}$, where $L$ is the orbital angular momentum of the $q\bar{q}$ pair in the meson.

Scalar Glueball in Radiative $J/ψ$ Decay on Lattice

The form factors in the radiative decay of $J/ψ$ to a scalar glueball are studied within quenched lattice QCD on anisotropic lattices. The continuum extrapolation is carried out by using two different lattice spacings. With the results of these form factors, the partial width of $J/ψ$ radiatively decaying into the pure gauge scalar glueball is predicted to be 0.35(8) keV, which corresponds to a branching ratio of 3.8(9)x10^{-3}. By comparing with the experiments, out results indicate that f_0(1710) has a larger overlap with the pure gauge glueball than other related scalar mesons.
