Lattice study on $η_{c2}$ and X(3872)

Properties of $2^{-+}$ charmonium $η_{c2}$ are investigated in quenched lattice QCD. The mass of $η_{c2}$ is determined to be 3.80(3) GeV, which is close to the mass of $D$-wave charmonium $ψ(3770)$ and in agreement with quark model predictions. The transition width of $η_{c2}\to γJ/ψ$ is also obtained with a value $Γ=3.8(9)$ keV. Since the possible $2^{-+}$ assignment to X(3872) has not been ruled out by experiments, our results help to clarify the nature of X(3872).

Milnor fibration at infinity for mixed polynomials

We study the existence of Milnor fibration on a big enough sphere at infinity for a mixed polynomial $f: \bR^{2n} \to \bR^2$. By using strong non-degeneracy condition, we prove a counterpart of Némethi and Zaharia's fibration theorem. In particular, we obtain a global version of Oka's fibration theorem for strongly non-degenerate and convenient mixed polynomials.

Density-dependent deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum

The deformed relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory in continuum with the density-dependent meson-nucleon couplings is developed. The formulism is briefly presented with the emphasis on handling the density-dependent couplings, meson fields, and potentials in axially deformed system with partial wave method. Taking the neutron-rich nucleus $^{38}$Mg as an example, the newly developed code is verified by the spherical relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov calculations, where only the spherical components of the densities are considered. When the deformation is included self-consistently, it is shown that the spherical components of density-dependent coupling strengths are dominant, while the contributions from low-order deformed components are not negligible.

Evolution of the commensurate and incommensurate magnetic phases of the S = 3/2 kagome staircase Co3V2O8 in an applied field

Single crystal neutron diffraction studies have been performed on the S = 3/2 kagome staircase compound Co3V2O8 with a magnetic field applied along the magnetization easy-axis (H || a). Previous zero field measurements [Y. Chen, et al., Phys. Rev. B 74, 014430 (2006)] reported a rich variety of magnetic phases, with a ferromagnetic ground state as well as incommensurate, transversely polarized spin density wave (SDW) phases (with a propagation vector of k = (0 delta 0)) interspersed with multiple commensurate lock-in transitions. The magnetic phase diagram with H || a adds further complexity. For small applied fields, H = 0.05 T, the commensurate lock-in phases are destabilized in favor of the incommensurate SDW, while slightly larger applied fields restore the commensurate lock-in phase with delta = 1/2 and yield a new commensurate phase with delta = 2/5. For all measurements in an applied field, higher-order scattering is observed that corresponds to the second-harmonic.

Radiative transitions in charmonium from $N_f=2$ twisted mass lattice QCD

We present a study for charmonium radiative transitions: $J/ψ\rightarrowη_cγ$, $χ_{c0}\rightarrow J/Ψγ$ and $h_c\rightarrowη_cγ$ using $N_f=2$ twisted mass lattice QCD gauge configurations. The single-quark vector form factors for $η_c$ and $χ_{c0}$ are also determined. The simulation is performed at a lattice spacing of $a= 0.06666$ fm and the lattice size is $32^3\times 64$. After extrapolation of lattice data at nonzero $Q^2$ to 0, we compare our results with previous quenched lattice results and the available experimental values.

Geometric phase for nonlinear coherent and squeezed state

The geometric phases for standard coherent states which are widely used in quantum optics have attracted a large amount of attention. Nevertheless, few physicists consider about the counterparts of non-linear coherent states, which are useful in the description of the motion of a trapped ion. In this paper, the non-unitary and non-cyclic geometric phases for two nonlinear coherent and one squeezed states are formulated respectively. Moreover, some of their common properties are discussed respectively, such as gauge invariance, non-locality and non-linear effects. The non-linear functions have dramatic impacts on the evolution of the corresponding geometric phases. They speed the evolution up or down. So this property may have application in controlling or measuring geometric phase. For the squeezed case, when the squeezed parameter r -> \infinity, the limiting value of the geometric phase is also determined by non-linear function at a given time and angular velocity. In addition, the geometric phases for standard coherent and squeezed states are obtained under a particular condition. When the time evolution undergoes a period, their corresponding cyclic geometric phases are achieved as well. And the distinction between the geometric phases of the two coherent states maybe regarded as a geometric criterion.

Interplay of defect cluster and the stability of xenon in uranium dioxide by density functional calculations

Self-defect clusters in bulk matrix might affect the thermodynamic behavior of fission gases in nuclear fuel such as uranium dioxide. With first-principles LSDA+U calculations and taking xenon as a prototype, we find that the influence of oxygen defect clusters on the thermodynamics of gas atoms is prominent, which increases the solution energy of xenon by a magnitude of 0.5 eV, about 43% of the energy difference between the two lowest lying states at 700 K. Calculation also reveals a thermodynamic competition between the uranium vacancy and tri-vacancy sites to incorporate xenon in hyper-stoichiometric regime at high temperatures. The results show that in hypo-stoichiometric regime neutral tri-vacancy sites are the most favored position for diluted xenon gas, whereas in hyper-stoichiometric condition they prefer to uranium vacancies even after taking oxygen self-defect clusters into account at low temperatures, which not only confirms previous studies but also extends the conclusion to more realistic fuel operating conditions. The observation that gas atoms are ionized to a charge state of Xe+ when at a uranium vacancy site due to strong Madelung potential implies that one can control temperature to tune the preferred site of gas atoms and then the bubble growth rate. A solution to the notorious meta-stable states difficulty that frequently encountered in DFT+U applications, namely, the quasi-annealing procedure, is also discussed.

Effect of magnetic field on the spin resonance in FeTe(0.5)Se(0.5) as seen via inelastic neutron scattering

Inelastic neutron scattering and susceptibility measurements have been performed on the optimally-doped Fe-based superconductor FeTe(0.5)Se(0.5), which has a critical temperature, Tc of 14 K. The magnetic scattering at the stripe antiferromagnetic wave-vector Q = (0.5,0.5) exhibits a "resonance" at ~ 6 meV, where the scattering intensity increases abruptly when cooled below Tc. In a 7-T magnetic field parallel to the a-b plane, Tc is slightly reduced to ~ 12 K, based on susceptibility measurements. The resonance in the neutron scattering measurements is also affected by the field. The resonance intensity under field cooling starts to rise at a lower temperature ~ 12 K, and the low temperature intensity is also reduced from the zero-field value. Our results provide clear evidence for the intimate relationship between superconductivity and the resonance measured in magnetic excitations of Fe-based superconductors.

A Quenched Study of SU(3) Glueballs at Finite Temperature

Thermal properties of glueballs in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory are investigated in a large temperature range from $0.3T_c$ to $1.9T_c$ on anisotropic lattices. The glueball operators are optimized for the projection of the ground states by the variational method with a smearing scheme. Their thermal correlators are calculated in all 20 symmetry channels. It is found in all channels that the pole masses $M_G$ of glueballs remain almost constant when the temperature is approaching the critical temperature $T_c$ from below, and start to reduce gradually with the temperature going above $T_c$. The correlators in the $0^{++}$, $0^{-+}$, and $2^{++}$ channels are also analyzed based on the Breit-Wigner $\emph{Ansatz}$ by assuming a thermal width $Γ$ to the pole mass $ω_0$ of each thermal glueball ground state. While the values of $ω_0$ are insensitive to $T$ in the whole temperature range, the thermal widths $Γ$ exhibit distinct behaviors at temperatures below and above $T_c$. The widths are very small (approximately few percent of $ω_0$ or even smaller) when $T T_c$ and reach values of roughly $Γ\sim ω_0/2$ at $T\approx 1.9T_c$.

Evolution of the bulk properties, structure, magnetic order, and superconductivity with Ni doping in CaFe2-xNixAs2

Magnetization, susceptibility, specific heat, resistivity, neutron and x-ray diffraction have been used to characterize the properties of single crystalline CaFe2-xNixAs2 as a function of Ni doping for x varying from 0 to 0.1. The combined first-order structural and magnetic phase transitions occur together in the undoped system at 172 K, with a small decrease in the area of the a-b plane along with an abrupt increase in the length of the c-axis in the orthorhombic phase. With increasing x the ordered moment and transition temperature decrease, but the transition remains sharp at modest doping while the area of the a-b plane quickly decreases and then saturates. Warming and cooling data in the resistivity and neutron diffraction indicate hysteresis of ~2 K. At larger doping the transition is more rounded, and decreases to zero for x=0.06. The susceptibility is anisotropic for all values of x. Electrical resistivity for x = 0.053 and 0.06 shows a superconducting transition with an onset of nearly 15 K which is further corroborated by substantial diamagnetic susceptibility. For the fully superconducting sample there is no long range magnetic order and the structure remains tetragonal at all temperature, but there is an anomalous increase in the area of the a-b plane in going to low T. Heat capacity data show that the density of states at the Fermi level increases for x > 0.053 as inferred from the value of Sommerfeld coefficient. The regime of superconductivity is quite restrictive, with a maximum TC of 15 K and an upper critical field Hc2=14 T. Superconductivity disappears in the overdoped region.

Low-energy $D^{*+}D^0_1$ Scattering and the Resonance-like Structure $Z^+(4430)$

Low-energy scattering of $D^*$ and $D_1$ meson are studied using quenched lattice QCD with improved lattice actions on anisotropic lattices. The calculation is performed within Lüscher's finite-size formalism which establishes the relation between the scattering phase in the infinite volume and the exact energy level in the finite volume. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the s-wave scattering in $J^P=0^-$ channel are extracted. After the chiral and continuum extrapolations, we obtain: $a_0=2.52(47)$fm and $r_0=0.7(1)$fm where the errors are purely statistical. Based on these results, we discuss the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two charmed mesons within the non-relativistic potential scattering model. It is argued that, albeit the interaction between the two charmed mesons being attractive, it is unlikely that they can form a shallow bound state in this channel. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z^+(4430)$ by the Belle Collaboration.

Antiferromagnetism in the magnetoelectric effect single crystal LiMnPO$_4$

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies reveal details of the antiferromagnetic tansition and intriguing spin-dynamics in the magneto-electric effect single crystal LiMnPO$_4$. The elastic scattering studies confirm the system is antiferromagnetic (AFM) below $T_N$=33.75 K with local magnetic moments (Mn$^{2+}$; $S = 5/2$) that are aligned along the crystallographic a-axis. The spin-wave dispersion curves propagating along the three principal axes, determined by inelastic scattering, are adequately modeled in the linear spin-wave framework assuming a spin-Hamiltonian that is parameterized by inter- and in-plane nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions, and by easy-plane anisotropy. The temperature dependence of the spin dynamics makes this an excellent model many-body spin system to address the question of the relationship between spin-wave excitations and the order parameter.

Spin gap and magnetic resonance in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$%_{0.1}$As$_{2}$

We use neutron spectroscopy to determine the nature of the magnetic excitations in superconducting BaFe$_{1.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{c}=20$ K). Above $T_{c}$ the excitations are gapless and centered at the commensurate antiferromagnetic wave vector of the parent compound, while the intensity exhibits a sinusoidal modulation along the c-axis. As the superconducting state is entered a spin gap gradually opens, whose magnitude tracks the $T$-dependence of the superconducting gap observed by angle resolved photoemission. Both the spin gap and magnetic resonance energies are temperature \textit{and} wave vector dependent, but their ratio is the same within uncertainties. These results suggest that the spin resonance is a singlet-triplet excitation related to electron pairing and superconductivity.

Origin and tuning of the magnetocaloric effect for the magnetic refrigerant MnFe(P1-xGex)

Neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements of the magneto refrigerant Mn1+yFe1-yP1-xGex reveal that the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases correspond to two very distinct crystal structures, with the magnetic entropy change as a function of magnetic field or temperature being directly controlled by the phase fraction of this first-order transition. By tuning the physical properties of this system we have achieved a maximum magnetic entropy change exceeding 74 J/Kg K for both increasing and decreasing field, more than twice the value of the previous record.

A New Scenario of Confinement and Hadron Spectra

This work presents a new phenomenological description of QCD vacuum where the color background field is depicted by a constant parallel vector with amplitude proportional to $σ\sim 0.28 GeV^2$. The familiar Regge relation can be derived directly in a classic meaning. A new mass formula of hadrons are conjectured to give a very consistent description of hadron mass spectra. The lower bounds of the baryon mass are determined to be $\sqrt{3σ}$ for nucleon and $\sqrt{5σ}$ for isospin-3/2 baryon. In the meanwhile, the mass-square differences of $1 {}^3 S_1$ and $1 {}^1 S_0$ meson states are obtained to be $2 σ$. We also predict the mass of the lowest four-quark state to be $\sqrt{4σ}$, which favors the $a_0(980)$ and $f_0(980)$ to be four-quark candidates. On the other hand, the effective heavy quark confinement potential is a direct result of this model.

Magnetic Order of the Iron Spins in NdOFeAs

Polarized and unpolarized neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out to investigate the iron magnetic order in undoped NdOFeAs. Antiferromagnetic order is observed below 141(6) K, which is in close proximity to the structural distortion observed in this material. The magnetic structure consists of chains of parallel spins that are arranged antiparallel between chains, which is the same in-plane spin arrangement as observed in all the other iron oxypnictide materials. Nearest-neighbor spins along the c-axis are antiparallel like LaOFeAs. The ordered moment is 0.25(7) muB, which is the smallest moment found so far in these systems.

Radially Excited States of 1P Charmonia and X(3872)

The excited states of charmonia are numerically investigated in quenched lattice QCD with improved gauge and Wilson fermion actions formulated on anisotropic lattices. Through a constrained curve fitting algorithm, the masses of the first excited states in $0^{++}$, $1^{++}$, and $1^{+-}$ channels are determined to be 3.825(88), 3.853(57), and 3.858(70) GeV, respectively. Furthormore, a node structure is also observed in the Bethe-Salpeter amplitude of the $1^{++}$ first excited state. These observations indicate that X(3872) could be the first radial excitation of $χ_{c1}$.
