NTIRE 2025 Challenge on UGC Video Enhancement: Methods and Results

This paper presents an overview of the NTIRE 2025 Challenge on UGC Video Enhancement. The challenge constructed a set of 150 user-generated content videos without reference ground truth, which suffer from real-world degradations such as noise, blur, faded colors, compression artifacts, etc. The goal of the participants was to develop an algorithm capable of improving the visual quality of such videos. Given the widespread use of UGC on short-form video platforms, this task holds substantial practical importance. The evaluation was based on subjective quality assessment in crowdsourcing, obtaining votes from over 8000 assessors. The challenge attracted more than 25 teams submitting solutions, 7 of which passed the final phase with source code verification. The outcomes may provide insights into the state-of-the-art in UGC video enhancement and highlight emerging trends and effective strategies in this evolving research area. All data, including the processed videos and subjective comparison votes and scores, is made publicly available at https://github.com/msu-video-group/NTIRE25_UGC_Video_Enhancement.

Symbolic Representation for Any-to-Any Generative Tasks

We propose a symbolic generative task description language and a corresponding inference engine capable of representing arbitrary multimodal tasks as structured symbolic flows. Unlike conventional generative models that rely on large-scale training and implicit neural representations to learn cross-modal mappings, often at high computational cost and with limited flexibility, our framework introduces an explicit symbolic representation comprising three core primitives: functions, parameters, and topological logic. Leveraging a pre-trained language model, our inference engine maps natural language instructions directly to symbolic workflows in a training-free manner. Our framework successfully performs over 12 diverse multimodal generative tasks, demonstrating strong performance and flexibility without the need for task-specific tuning. Experiments show that our method not only matches or outperforms existing state-of-the-art unified models in content quality, but also offers greater efficiency, editability, and interruptibility. We believe that symbolic task representations provide a cost-effective and extensible foundation for advancing the capabilities of generative AI.

Semimetals without correspondence between the topological charge of nodal line/surface and Fermi arc

It is generally believed that there is a correspondence between the topological charge of nodal points or lines and the presence of Fermi arcs. Using a $\mathcal{P}\mathcal{T}$-invariant system as an example, we demonstrate that this general belief is no longer valid. When two charged nodal lines or surfaces touch, the topological charge {dissipates without gap opening}, yet the surfaces or hinge Fermi arcs can remain preserved. It is found that both static and Floquet semimetals can exhibit Fermi arcs, even when the nodal lines or surfaces do not carry a $Z_2$ charge from second Stiefel-Whitney class.

Universal thermodynamic topological classes of three-dimensional BTZ black holes

We establish a universal thermodynamic topological classification for three-dimensional static neutral Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ), charged BTZ, and rotating BTZ black holes. We demonstrate that in all three cases (static neutral BTZ, charged BTZ, and rotating BTZ black holes), both the innermost small black hole states and the outermost large black hole states exhibit stable thermodynamic behavior. In the low-temperature limit, all three cases exhibit a thermodynamically stable small black hole state. Conversely, in the high-temperature limit, each system admits a thermodynamically stable large black hole state. Through this analysis, we have rigorously shown that static neutral, charged, and rotating BTZ black holes are consistently classified within the $W^{1+}$ category. Our results demonstrate that neither the charge parameter nor the rotation parameter exerts significant influence on the universal thermodynamic topological classification of three-dimensional static neutral BTZ black holes. This reveals a fundamental dichotomy: while angular momentum and electric charge dominate the thermodynamic topology of four-dimensional static black holes, their effects become negligible in the three-dimensional static BTZ case, highlighting a dimension-driven divergence in black hole thermodynamic behavior.

RAG-VR: Leveraging Retrieval-Augmented Generation for 3D Question Answering in VR Environments

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) provide new opportunities for context understanding in virtual reality (VR). However, VR contexts are often highly localized and personalized, limiting the effectiveness of general-purpose LLMs. To address this challenge, we present RAG-VR, the first 3D question-answering system for VR that incorporates retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which augments an LLM with external knowledge retrieved from a localized knowledge database to improve the answer quality. RAG-VR includes a pipeline for extracting comprehensive knowledge about virtual environments and user conditions for accurate answer generation. To ensure efficient retrieval, RAG-VR offloads the retrieval process to a nearby edge server and uses only essential information during retrieval. Moreover, we train the retriever to effectively distinguish among relevant, irrelevant, and hard-to-differentiate information in relation to questions. RAG-VR improves answer accuracy by 17.9%-41.8% and reduces end-to-end latency by 34.5%-47.3% compared with two baseline systems.

NMR study of supersolid phases in the triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Na2BaCo(PO4)2

We report ultra-low-temperature $^{23}$Na NMR measurements on the Ising triangular lattice antiferromagnet Na$_2$BaCo(PO$_4$)$_2$, which precisely resolve the phase diagram under magnetic field applied along the crystalline $c$ axis. With increasing field, the NMR spectra resolve three ordered phases with distinct spin configurations: the Y, up-up-down (UUD), and V phases. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ data demonstrate gapless excitations in the Y and V phases, strongly supporting their supersolid nature. However, the phase transitions from the UUD phase to the two supersolid phases exhibit dramatically different behaviors upon cooling. Prior to entering the Y phase, $1/T_1$ identifies a gapless regime within the UUD phase, suggesting a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase above a second-order phase transition. In contrast, the coexistence of the UUD and V phases observed in our experiments provides direct evidence of a first-order phase transition between these phases.

Decoupled anisotropic Charge-Phonon Transport Enables Exceptional n-Type Thermoelectric Performance in CuBiSCl$_2$

First-principles calculations demonstrate an exceptional decoupling of charge and thermal transport along the \textit{a}-axis in CuBiSCl$_2$. The material achieves superior electron mobility (138 cm$^2$/V$\cdot$s at 300 K) through delocalized Bi-6\textit{p}/S-3\textit{p} networks while maintaining ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (0.40 W/mK at 300 K) via Cu-dominated anharmonic phonon scattering - both optimized along the same crystallographic direction. This simultaneous optimization originates from the anisotropic bonding hierarchy where [BiSCl$_2$]$_n$ ribbons enable efficient charge transport along \textit{a}-axis, while the soft vibrational modes associated with Cu atoms strongly scatter heat-carrying phonons. The resulting high power factor (1.71 mW/mK$^2$ at 700 K) and peak \textit{ZT} of 1.57 establish CuBiSCl$_2$ as a model system that realizes the long-sought "phonon glass-electron crystal" paradigm through crystallographically engineered transport channels.

Fast-Converged Deep Reinforcement Learning for Optimal Dispatch of Large-Scale Power Systems under Transient Security Constraints

Power system optimal dispatch with transient security constraints is commonly represented as Transient Security-Constrained Optimal Power Flow (TSC-OPF). Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based TSC-OPF trains efficient decision-making agents that are adaptable to various scenarios and provide solution results quickly. However, due to the high dimensionality of the state space and action spaces, as well as the non-smoothness of dynamic constraints, existing DRL-based TSC-OPF solution methods face a significant challenge of the sparse reward problem. To address this issue, a fast-converged DRL method for TSC-OPF is proposed in this paper. The Markov Decision Process (MDP) modeling of TSC-OPF is improved by reducing the observation space and smoothing the reward design, thus facilitating agent training. An improved Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient algorithm with Curriculum learning, Parallel exploration, and Ensemble decision-making (DDPG-CPEn) is introduced to drastically enhance the efficiency of agent training and the accuracy of decision-making. The effectiveness, efficiency, and accuracy of the proposed method are demonstrated through experiments in the IEEE 39-bus system and a practical 710-bus regional power grid. The source code of the proposed method is made public on GitHub.

GMAI-VL & GMAI-VL-5.5M: A Large Vision-Language Model and A Comprehensive Multimodal Dataset Towards General Medical AI

Despite significant advancements in general AI, its effectiveness in the medical domain is limited by the lack of specialized medical knowledge. To address this, we formulate GMAI-VL-5.5M, a multimodal medical dataset created by converting hundreds of specialized medical datasets with various annotations into high-quality image-text pairs. This dataset offers comprehensive task coverage, diverse modalities, and rich image-text data. Building upon this dataset, we develop GMAI-VL, a general medical vision-language model, with a three-stage training strategy that enhances the integration of visual and textual information. This approach significantly improves the model's ability to process multimodal data, supporting accurate diagnoses and clinical decision-making. Experiments show that GMAI-VL achieves state-of-the-art performance across various multimodal medical tasks, including visual question answering and medical image diagnosis.

40 Years of Interdisciplinary Research: Phases, Origins, and Key Turning Points (1981-2020)

This study examines the historical evolution of interdisciplinary research (IDR) over a 40-year period, focusing on its dynamic trends, phases, and key turning points. We apply time series analysis to identify critical years for interdisciplinary citations (CYICs) and categorizes IDR into three distinct phases based on these trends: Period I (1981-2002), marked by sporadic and limited interdisciplinary activity; Period II (2003-2016), characterized by the emergence of large-scale IDR led primarily by Medicine, with significant breakthroughs in cloning and medical technology; and Period III (2017-present), where IDR became a widely adopted research paradigm. Our findings indicate that IDR has been predominantly concentrated within the Natural Sciences, with Medicine consistently at the forefront, and highlights increasing contributions from Engineering and Environmental disciplines as a new trend. These insights enhance the understanding of the evolution of IDR, its driving factors, and the shifts in the focus of interdisciplinary collaborations.

MC-LLaVA: Multi-Concept Personalized Vision-Language Model

Current vision-language models (VLMs) show exceptional abilities across diverse tasks, such as visual question answering. To enhance user experience, recent studies investigate VLM personalization to understand user-provided concepts. However, they mainly focus on single-concept personalization, neglecting the existence and interplay of multiple concepts, which limits real-world applicability. This paper proposes the first multi-concept personalization paradigm, MC-LLaVA. Specifically, MC-LLaVA employs a multi-concept instruction tuning strategy, effectively integrating multiple concepts in a single training step. To reduce the costs related to joint training, we propose a personalized textual prompt that uses visual token information to initialize concept tokens. Additionally, we introduce a personalized visual prompt during inference, aggregating location confidence maps for enhanced recognition and grounding capabilities. To advance multi-concept personalization research, we further contribute a high-quality instruction tuning dataset. We carefully collect images with multiple characters and objects from movies and manually generate question-answer samples for multi-concept scenarios, featuring superior diversity. Comprehensive qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that MC-LLaVA can achieve impressive multi-concept personalized responses, paving the way for VLMs to become better user-specific assistants. The code and dataset will be publicly available at https://github.com/arctanxarc/MC-LLaVA}.

SlideChat: A Large Vision-Language Assistant for Whole-Slide Pathology Image Understanding

Despite the progress made by multimodal large language models (MLLMs) in computational pathology, they remain limited by a predominant focus on patch-level analysis, missing essential contextual information at the whole-slide level. The lack of large-scale instruction datasets and the gigapixel scale of whole slide images (WSIs) pose significant developmental challenges. In this paper, we present SlideChat, the first vision-language assistant capable of understanding gigapixel whole-slide images, exhibiting excellent multimodal conversational capability and response complex instruction across diverse pathology scenarios. To support its development, we created SlideInstruction, the largest instruction-following dataset for WSIs consisting of 4.2K WSI captions and 176K VQA pairs with multiple categories. Furthermore, we propose SlideBench, a multimodal benchmark that incorporates captioning and VQA tasks to assess SlideChat's capabilities in varied clinical settings such as microscopy, diagnosis. Compared to both general and specialized MLLMs, SlideChat exhibits exceptional capabilities achieving state-of-the-art performance on 18 of 22 tasks. For example, it achieved an overall accuracy of 81.17% on SlideBench-VQA (TCGA), and 54.15% on SlideBench-VQA (BCNB). Squeeze Out Tokens from Sample for Finer-Grained Data Governance

Widely observed data scaling laws, in which error falls off as a power of the training size, demonstrate the diminishing returns of unselective data expansion. Hence, data governance is proposed to downsize datasets through pruning non-informative samples. Yet, isolating the impact of a specific sample on overall model performance is challenging, due to the vast computation required for tryout all sample combinations. Current data governors circumvent this complexity by estimating sample contributions through heuristic-derived scalar scores, thereby discarding low-value ones. Despite thorough sample sieving, retained samples contain substantial undesired tokens intrinsically, underscoring the potential for further compression and purification. In this work, we upgrade data governance from a 'sieving' approach to a 'juicing' one. Instead of scanning for least-flawed samples, our dual-branch DataJuicer applies finer-grained intra-sample governance. It squeezes out informative tokens and boosts image-text alignments. Specifically, the vision branch retains salient image patches and extracts relevant object classes, while the text branch incorporates these classes to enhance captions. Consequently, DataJuicer yields more refined datasets through finer-grained governance. Extensive experiments across datasets demonstrate that DataJuicer significantly outperforms existing DataSieve in image-text retrieval, classification, and dense visual reasoning.

Diabetica: Adapting Large Language Model to Enhance Multiple Medical Tasks in Diabetes Care and Management

Diabetes is a chronic disease with a significant global health burden, requiring multi-stakeholder collaboration for optimal management. Large language models (LLMs) have shown promise in various healthcare scenarios, but their effectiveness across diverse diabetes tasks remains unproven. Our study introduced a framework to train and validate diabetes-specific LLMs. We first developed a comprehensive data processing pipeline that includes data collection, filtering, augmentation and refinement. This created a high-quality, diabetes-specific dataset and evaluation benchmarks from scratch. Fine-tuned on the collected training dataset, our diabetes-specific LLM family demonstrated state-of-the-art proficiency in processing various diabetes tasks compared to other LLMs. Furthermore, clinical studies revealed the potential applications of our models in diabetes care, including providing personalized healthcare, assisting medical education, and streamlining clinical tasks. Generally, our introduced framework helps develop diabetes-specific LLMs and highlights their potential to enhance clinical practice and provide personalized, data-driven support for diabetes management across different end users. Our codes, benchmarks and models are available at https://github.com/waltonfuture/Diabetica.

Facial Attractiveness Prediction in Live Streaming: A New Benchmark and Multi-modal Method

Facial attractiveness prediction (FAP) has long been an important computer vision task, which could be widely applied in live streaming for facial retouching, content recommendation, etc. However, previous FAP datasets are either small, closed-source, or lack diversity. Moreover, the corresponding FAP models exhibit limited generalization and adaptation ability. To overcome these limitations, in this paper we present LiveBeauty, the first large-scale live-specific FAP dataset, in a more challenging application scenario, i.e., live streaming. 10,000 face images are collected from a live streaming platform directly, with 200,000 corresponding attractiveness annotations obtained from a well-devised subjective experiment, making LiveBeauty the largest open-access FAP dataset in the challenging live scenario. Furthermore, a multi-modal FAP method is proposed to measure the facial attractiveness in live streaming. Specifically, we first extract holistic facial prior knowledge and multi-modal aesthetic semantic features via a Personalized Attractiveness Prior Module (PAPM) and a Multi-modal Attractiveness Encoder Module (MAEM), respectively, then integrate the extracted features through a Cross-Modal Fusion Module (CMFM). Extensive experiments conducted on both LiveBeauty and other open-source FAP datasets demonstrate that our proposed method achieves state-of-the-art performance. Dataset will be available soon.

An automatic approach to develop the fourth-order and L^2-stable lattice Boltzmann model for diagonal-anisotropic diffusion equations

This paper discusses how to develop a high-order multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for the general d(>=1)-dimensional diagonal-anisotropic diffusion equation. Such an MRT-LB model considers the transformation matrix constructed in a natural way and the DdQ(2d^2+1) lattice structure. A key step in developing the high-order MRT-LB model is to determine the adjustable relaxation parameters and weight coefficients, which are used to eliminate the truncation errors at certain orders of the MRT-LB model, while ensuring the stability of the MRT-LB model. In this work, we first present a unified MRT-LB model for the diagonal-anisotropic diffusion equation. Then, through the direct Taylor expansion, we analyze the macroscopic modified equations of the MRT-LB model up to fourth-order, and further derive the fourth-order consistent conditions of the MRT-LB model. Additionally, we also construct the fourth-order initialization scheme for the present LB method. After that, the condition which guarantees that the MRT-LB model can satisfy the stability structure is explicitly given, and from a numerical perspective, once the stability structure is satisfied, the MRT-LB model must be L^2 stable. In combination with the fourth-order consistent and L^2 stability conditions, the relaxation parameters and weight coefficients of the MRT-LB model can be automatically given by a simple computer code. Finally, we perform numerical simulations of several benchmark problems, and find that the numerical results can achieve a fourth-order convergence rate, which is in agreement with our theoretical analysis. In particular, for the isotropic diffusion equation, we also make a comparison between the fourth-order MRT-LB models with the DdQ(2d^2+1) and DdQ(2d+1) lattice structures, and the numerical results show that the MRT-LB model with the DdQ(2d^2+1) lattice structure is more general.

From Coverage to Prestige: A Comprehensive Assessment of Large-Scale Scientometric Data

As research in the Scientometric deepens, the impact of data quality on research outcomes has garnered increasing attention. This study, based on Web of Science (WoS) and Crossref datasets, systematically evaluates the differences between data sources and the effects of data merging through matching, comparison, and integration. Two core metrics were employed: Reference Coverage Rate (RCR) and Article Scientific Prestige (ASP), which respectively measure citation completeness (quantity) and academic influence (quality). The results indicate that the WoS dataset outperforms Crossref in its coverage of high-impact literature and ASP scores, while the Crossref dataset provides complementary value through its broader coverage of literature. Data merging significantly improves the completeness of the citation network, with particularly pronounced benefits in smaller disciplinary clusters such as Education and Arts. However, data merging also introduces some low-quality citations, resulting in a polarization of overall data quality. Moreover, the impact of data merging varies across disciplines; high-impact clusters such as Science, Biology, and Medicine benefit the most, whereas clusters like Social Sciences and Arts are more vulnerable to negative effects. This study highlights the critical role of data sources in Scientometric research and provides a framework for assessing and improving data quality.

Patterning Silver Nanowire Network via the Gibbs-Thomson Effect

As transparent electrodes, patterned silver nanowire (AgNW) networks suffer from noticeable pattern visibility, which is an unsettled issue for practical applications such as display. Here, we introduce a Gibbs-Thomson effect (GTE)-based patterning method to effectively reduce pattern visibility. Unlike conventional top-down and bottom-up strategies that rely on selective etching, removal, or deposition of AgNWs, our approach focuses on fragmenting nanowires primarily at the junctions through the GTE. This is realized by modifying AgNWs with a compound of diphenyliodonium nitrate and silver nitrate, which aggregates into nanoparticles at the junctions of AgNWs. These nanoparticles can boost the fragmentation of nanowires at the junctions under an ultralow temperature (75°C), allow pattern transfer through a photolithographic masking operation, and enhance plasmonic welding during UV exposure. The resultant patterned electrodes have trivial differences in transmittance (ΔT = 1.4%) and haze (ΔH = 0.3%) between conductive and insulative regions, with high-resolution patterning size down to 10 μm. To demonstrate the practicality of this novel method, we constructed a highly transparent, optoelectrical interactive tactile e-skin using the patterned AgNW electrodes.
