Pixel Adaptive Deep Unfolding Transformer for Hyperspectral Image Reconstruction

Hyperspectral Image (HSI) reconstruction has made gratifying progress with the deep unfolding framework by formulating the problem into a data module and a prior module. Nevertheless, existing methods still face the problem of insufficient matching with HSI data. The issues lie in three aspects: 1) fixed gradient descent step in the data module while the degradation of HSI is agnostic in the pixel-level. 2) inadequate prior module for 3D HSI cube. 3) stage interaction ignoring the differences in features at different stages. To address these issues, in this work, we propose a Pixel Adaptive Deep Unfolding Transformer (PADUT) for HSI reconstruction. In the data module, a pixel adaptive descent step is employed to focus on pixel-level agnostic degradation. In the prior module, we introduce the Non-local Spectral Transformer (NST) to emphasize the 3D characteristics of HSI for recovering. Moreover, inspired by the diverse expression of features in different stages and depths, the stage interaction is improved by the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). Experimental results on both simulated and real scenes exhibit the superior performance of our method compared to state-of-the-art HSI reconstruction methods. The code is released at: https://github.com/MyuLi/PADUT.

MPI-Flow: Learning Realistic Optical Flow with Multiplane Images

The accuracy of learning-based optical flow estimation models heavily relies on the realism of the training datasets. Current approaches for generating such datasets either employ synthetic data or generate images with limited realism. However, the domain gap of these data with real-world scenes constrains the generalization of the trained model to real-world applications. To address this issue, we investigate generating realistic optical flow datasets from real-world images. Firstly, to generate highly realistic new images, we construct a layered depth representation, known as multiplane images (MPI), from single-view images. This allows us to generate novel view images that are highly realistic. To generate optical flow maps that correspond accurately to the new image, we calculate the optical flows of each plane using the camera matrix and plane depths. We then project these layered optical flows into the output optical flow map with volume rendering. Secondly, to ensure the realism of motion, we present an independent object motion module that can separate the camera and dynamic object motion in MPI. This module addresses the deficiency in MPI-based single-view methods, where optical flow is generated only by camera motion and does not account for any object movement. We additionally devise a depth-aware inpainting module to merge new images with dynamic objects and address unnatural motion occlusions. We show the superior performance of our method through extensive experiments on real-world datasets. Moreover, our approach achieves state-of-the-art performance in both unsupervised and supervised training of learning-based models. The code will be made publicly available at: \url{https://github.com/Sharpiless/MPI-Flow}.

Instance Segmentation in the Dark

Existing instance segmentation techniques are primarily tailored for high-visibility inputs, but their performance significantly deteriorates in extremely low-light environments. In this work, we take a deep look at instance segmentation in the dark and introduce several techniques that substantially boost the low-light inference accuracy. The proposed method is motivated by the observation that noise in low-light images introduces high-frequency disturbances to the feature maps of neural networks, thereby significantly degrading performance. To suppress this ``feature noise", we propose a novel learning method that relies on an adaptive weighted downsampling layer, a smooth-oriented convolutional block, and disturbance suppression learning. These components effectively reduce feature noise during downsampling and convolution operations, enabling the model to learn disturbance-invariant features. Furthermore, we discover that high-bit-depth RAW images can better preserve richer scene information in low-light conditions compared to typical camera sRGB outputs, thus supporting the use of RAW-input algorithms. Our analysis indicates that high bit-depth can be critical for low-light instance segmentation. To mitigate the scarcity of annotated RAW datasets, we leverage a low-light RAW synthetic pipeline to generate realistic low-light data. In addition, to facilitate further research in this direction, we capture a real-world low-light instance segmentation dataset comprising over two thousand paired low/normal-light images with instance-level pixel-wise annotations. Remarkably, without any image preprocessing, we achieve satisfactory performance on instance segmentation in very low light (4~\% AP higher than state-of-the-art competitors), meanwhile opening new opportunities for future research.

RawHDR: High Dynamic Range Image Reconstruction from a Single Raw Image

High dynamic range (HDR) images capture much more intensity levels than standard ones. Current methods predominantly generate HDR images from 8-bit low dynamic range (LDR) sRGB images that have been degraded by the camera processing pipeline. However, it becomes a formidable task to retrieve extremely high dynamic range scenes from such limited bit-depth data. Unlike existing methods, the core idea of this work is to incorporate more informative Raw sensor data to generate HDR images, aiming to recover scene information in hard regions (the darkest and brightest areas of an HDR scene). To this end, we propose a model tailor-made for Raw images, harnessing the unique features of Raw data to facilitate the Raw-to-HDR mapping. Specifically, we learn exposure masks to separate the hard and easy regions of a high dynamic scene. Then, we introduce two important guidances, dual intensity guidance, which guides less informative channels with more informative ones, and global spatial guidance, which extrapolates scene specifics over an extended spatial domain. To verify our Raw-to-HDR approach, we collect a large Raw/HDR paired dataset for both training and testing. Our empirical evaluations validate the superiority of the proposed Raw-to-HDR reconstruction model, as well as our newly captured dataset in the experiments.

Hybrid Spectral Denoising Transformer with Guided Attention

In this paper, we present a Hybrid Spectral Denoising Transformer (HSDT) for hyperspectral image denoising. Challenges in adapting transformer for HSI arise from the capabilities to tackle existing limitations of CNN-based methods in capturing the global and local spatial-spectral correlations while maintaining efficiency and flexibility. To address these issues, we introduce a hybrid approach that combines the advantages of both models with a Spatial-Spectral Separable Convolution (S3Conv), Guided Spectral Self-Attention (GSSA), and Self-Modulated Feed-Forward Network (SM-FFN). Our S3Conv works as a lightweight alternative to 3D convolution, which extracts more spatial-spectral correlated features while keeping the flexibility to tackle HSIs with an arbitrary number of bands. These features are then adaptively processed by GSSA which per-forms 3D self-attention across the spectral bands, guided by a set of learnable queries that encode the spectral signatures. This not only enriches our model with powerful capabilities for identifying global spectral correlations but also maintains linear complexity. Moreover, our SM-FFN proposes the self-modulation that intensifies the activations of more informative regions, which further strengthens the aggregated features. Extensive experiments are conducted on various datasets under both simulated and real-world noise, and it shows that our HSDT significantly outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods while maintaining low computational overhead. Recurrent Self-Supervised Video Denoising with Denser Receptive Field

Self-supervised video denoising has seen decent progress through the use of blind spot networks. However, under their blind spot constraints, previous self-supervised video denoising methods suffer from significant information loss and texture destruction in either the whole reference frame or neighbor frames, due to their inadequate consideration of the receptive field. Moreover, the limited number of available neighbor frames in previous methods leads to the discarding of distant temporal information. Nonetheless, simply adopting existing recurrent frameworks does not work, since they easily break the constraints on the receptive field imposed by self-supervision. In this paper, we propose RDRF for self-supervised video denoising, which not only fully exploits both the reference and neighbor frames with a denser receptive field, but also better leverages the temporal information from both local and distant neighbor features. First, towards a comprehensive utilization of information from both reference and neighbor frames, RDRF realizes a denser receptive field by taking more neighbor pixels along the spatial and temporal dimensions. Second, it features a self-supervised recurrent video denoising framework, which concurrently integrates distant and near-neighbor temporal features. This enables long-term bidirectional information aggregation, while mitigating error accumulation in the plain recurrent framework. Our method exhibits superior performance on both synthetic and real video denoising datasets. Codes will be available at https://github.com/Wang-XIaoDingdd/RDRF.

Denoising Diffusion Semantic Segmentation with Mask Prior Modeling

The evolution of semantic segmentation has long been dominated by learning more discriminative image representations for classifying each pixel. Despite the prominent advancements, the priors of segmentation masks themselves, e.g., geometric and semantic constraints, are still under-explored. In this paper, we propose to ameliorate the semantic segmentation quality of existing discriminative approaches with a mask prior modeled by a recently-developed denoising diffusion generative model. Beginning with a unified architecture that adapts diffusion models for mask prior modeling, we focus this work on a specific instantiation with discrete diffusion and identify a variety of key design choices for its successful application. Our exploratory analysis revealed several important findings, including: (1) a simple integration of diffusion models into semantic segmentation is not sufficient, and a poorly-designed diffusion process might lead to degradation in segmentation performance; (2) during the training, the object to which noise is added is more important than the type of noise; (3) during the inference, the strict diffusion denoising scheme may not be essential and can be relaxed to a simpler scheme that even works better. We evaluate the proposed prior modeling with several off-the-shelf segmentors, and our experimental results on ADE20K and Cityscapes demonstrate that our approach could achieve competitively quantitative performance and more appealing visual quality.

Spectral Enhanced Rectangle Transformer for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Denoising is a crucial step for hyperspectral image (HSI) applications. Though witnessing the great power of deep learning, existing HSI denoising methods suffer from limitations in capturing the non-local self-similarity. Transformers have shown potential in capturing long-range dependencies, but few attempts have been made with specifically designed Transformer to model the spatial and spectral correlation in HSIs. In this paper, we address these issues by proposing a spectral enhanced rectangle Transformer, driving it to explore the non-local spatial similarity and global spectral low-rank property of HSIs. For the former, we exploit the rectangle self-attention horizontally and vertically to capture the non-local similarity in the spatial domain. For the latter, we design a spectral enhancement module that is capable of extracting global underlying low-rank property of spatial-spectral cubes to suppress noise, while enabling the interactions among non-overlapping spatial rectangles. Extensive experiments have been conducted on both synthetic noisy HSIs and real noisy HSIs, showing the effectiveness of our proposed method in terms of both objective metric and subjective visual quality. Improved Quasi-Recurrent Neural Network for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Hyperspectral image is unique and useful for its abundant spectral bands, but it subsequently requires extra elaborated treatments of the spatial-spectral correlation as well as the global correlation along the spectrum for building a robust and powerful HSI restoration algorithm. By considering such HSI characteristics, 3D Quasi-Recurrent Neural Network (QRNN3D) is one of the HSI denoising networks that has been shown to achieve excellent performance and flexibility. In this paper, we show that with a few simple modifications, the performance of QRNN3D could be substantially improved further. Our modifications are based on the finding that through QRNN3D is powerful for modeling spectral correlation, it neglects the proper treatment between features from different sources and its training strategy is suboptimal. We, therefore, introduce an adaptive fusion module to replace its vanilla additive skip connection to better fuse the features of the encoder and decoder. We additionally identify several important techniques to further enhance the performance, which includes removing batch normalization, use of extra frequency loss, and learning rate warm-up. Experimental results on various noise settings demonstrate the effectiveness and superior performance of our method.

LG-BPN: Local and Global Blind-Patch Network for Self-Supervised Real-World Denoising

Despite the significant results on synthetic noise under simplified assumptions, most self-supervised denoising methods fail under real noise due to the strong spatial noise correlation, including the advanced self-supervised blind-spot networks (BSNs). For recent methods targeting real-world denoising, they either suffer from ignoring this spatial correlation, or are limited by the destruction of fine textures for under-considering the correlation. In this paper, we present a novel method called LG-BPN for self-supervised real-world denoising, which takes the spatial correlation statistic into our network design for local detail restoration, and also brings the long-range dependencies modeling ability to previously CNN-based BSN methods. First, based on the correlation statistic, we propose a densely-sampled patch-masked convolution module. By taking more neighbor pixels with low noise correlation into account, we enable a denser local receptive field, preserving more useful information for enhanced fine structure recovery. Second, we propose a dilated Transformer block to allow distant context exploitation in BSN. This global perception addresses the intrinsic deficiency of BSN, whose receptive field is constrained by the blind spot requirement, which can not be fully resolved by the previous CNN-based BSNs. These two designs enable LG-BPN to fully exploit both the detailed structure and the global interaction in a blind manner. Extensive results on real-world datasets demonstrate the superior performance of our method. https://github.com/Wang-XIaoDingdd/LGBPN

HyperAttack: Multi-Gradient-Guided White-box Adversarial Structure Attack of Hypergraph Neural Networks

Hypergraph neural networks (HGNN) have shown superior performance in various deep learning tasks, leveraging the high-order representation ability to formulate complex correlations among data by connecting two or more nodes through hyperedge modeling. Despite the well-studied adversarial attacks on Graph Neural Networks (GNN), there is few study on adversarial attacks against HGNN, which leads to a threat to the safety of HGNN applications. In this paper, we introduce HyperAttack, the first white-box adversarial attack framework against hypergraph neural networks. HyperAttack conducts a white-box structure attack by perturbing hyperedge link status towards the target node with the guidance of both gradients and integrated gradients. We evaluate HyperAttack on the widely-used Cora and PubMed datasets and three hypergraph neural networks with typical hypergraph modeling techniques. Compared to state-of-the-art white-box structural attack methods for GNN, HyperAttack achieves a 10-20X improvement in time efficiency while also increasing attack success rates by 1.3%-3.7%. The results show that HyperAttack can achieve efficient adversarial attacks that balance effectiveness and time costs.

MgF$_2$ as an effective additive for improving ionic conductivity of ceramic solid electrolytes

As typical solid-state electrolytes (SSEs), {Na}$_{1+x}${Zr}$_2${Si}$_{x}${P}$_{3-x}${O}$_{12}$ NASICONs provide an ideal platform for solid-state batteries (SSBs) that display higher safety and accommodate higher energy densities. The critical points for achieving SSBs with higher efficiencies are to improve essentially the ionic conductivity and to reduce largely the interfacial resistance between SSEs and cathode materials, which would necessitate extremely high level of craftsmanship and high-pressure equipment. An alternative to higher-performance and lower-cost SSBs is additive manufacturing. Here, we report on an effective additive, MgF$_2$, which was used in synthesizing NASICONs, resulting in SSEs with fewer defects and higher performance. With an addition of mere 1 wt$\%$ MgF$_2$ additive, the total room-temperature ionic conductivity of the NASICON electrolyte reaches up to 2.03 mS cm$^{-1}$, improved up to $\sim$ 181.3$\%$, with an activation energy of 0.277 eV. Meanwhile, the stability of the Na plating/stripping behavior in symmetric cells increases from 236 to 654 h. We tried to reveal the microscopic origins of the higher ionic conductivity of MgF$_2$-doped NASICONs by comprehensive in-house characterizations. Our study discovers a novel MgF$_2$ additive and provides an efficient way to prepare higher-performance SSEs, making it possible to fabricate lower-cost SSBs in industries.

Hyperspectral Image Super Resolution with Real Unaligned RGB Guidance

Fusion-based hyperspectral image (HSI) super-resolution has become increasingly prevalent for its capability to integrate high-frequency spatial information from the paired high-resolution (HR) RGB reference image. However, most of the existing methods either heavily rely on the accurate alignment between low-resolution (LR) HSIs and RGB images, or can only deal with simulated unaligned RGB images generated by rigid geometric transformations, which weakens their effectiveness for real scenes. In this paper, we explore the fusion-based HSI super-resolution with real RGB reference images that have both rigid and non-rigid misalignments. To properly address the limitations of existing methods for unaligned reference images, we propose an HSI fusion network with heterogenous feature extractions, multi-stage feature alignments, and attentive feature fusion. Specifically, our network first transforms the input HSI and RGB images into two sets of multi-scale features with an HSI encoder and an RGB encoder, respectively. The features of RGB reference images are then processed by a multi-stage alignment module to explicitly align the features of RGB reference with the LR HSI. Finally, the aligned features of RGB reference are further adjusted by an adaptive attention module to focus more on discriminative regions before sending them to the fusion decoder to generate the reconstructed HR HSI. Additionally, we collect a real-world HSI fusion dataset, consisting of paired HSI and unaligned RGB reference, to support the evaluation of the proposed model for real scenes. Extensive experiments are conducted on both simulated and our real-world datasets, and it shows that our method obtains a clear improvement over existing single-image and fusion-based super-resolution methods on quantitative assessment as well as visual comparison.

Mixed Attention Network for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Hyperspectral image denoising is unique for the highly similar and correlated spectral information that should be properly considered. However, existing methods show limitations in exploring the spectral correlations across different bands and feature interactions within each band. Besides, the low- and high-level features usually exhibit different importance for different spatial-spectral regions, which is not fully explored for current algorithms as well. In this paper, we present a Mixed Attention Network (MAN) that simultaneously considers the inter- and intra-spectral correlations as well as the interactions between low- and high-level spatial-spectral meaningful features. Specifically, we introduce a multi-head recurrent spectral attention that efficiently integrates the inter-spectral features across all the spectral bands. These features are further enhanced with a progressive spectral channel attention by exploring the intra-spectral relationships. Moreover, we propose an attentive skip-connection that adaptively controls the proportion of the low- and high-level spatial-spectral features from the encoder and decoder to better enhance the aggregated features. Extensive experiments show that our MAN outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods on simulated and real noise settings while maintaining a low cost of parameters and running time.

Spatial-Spectral Transformer for Hyperspectral Image Denoising

Hyperspectral image (HSI) denoising is a crucial preprocessing procedure for the subsequent HSI applications. Unfortunately, though witnessing the development of deep learning in HSI denoising area, existing convolution-based methods face the trade-off between computational efficiency and capability to model non-local characteristics of HSI. In this paper, we propose a Spatial-Spectral Transformer (SST) to alleviate this problem. To fully explore intrinsic similarity characteristics in both spatial dimension and spectral dimension, we conduct non-local spatial self-attention and global spectral self-attention with Transformer architecture. The window-based spatial self-attention focuses on the spatial similarity beyond the neighboring region. While, spectral self-attention exploits the long-range dependencies between highly correlative bands. Experimental results show that our proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art HSI denoising methods in quantitative quality and visual results.

Orbital stability of periodic peakons for a new higher-order $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation

Consideration here is a higher-order $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation, which is a higher-order extension of the $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation and retains some properties of the $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation and the modified $μ$-Camassa-Holm equation. By utilizing the inequalities with the maximum and minimum of the solution related to the first three conservation laws, we establish that the periodic peakons of this equation are orbitally stable under small perturbations in the energy space.

Reducibility of the dispersive Camassa-Holm equation with unbounded perturbations

Considered herein is the reducibility of the quasi-periodically time dependent linear dynamical system with a diophantine frequency vector $ω\in \mathcal{O}_0 \subset \mathbb{R}^ν$. This system is derived from linearizing the dispersive Camassa-Holm equation with unbounded perturbations at a small amplitude quasi-periodic function. It is shown that there is a set $\mathcal{O}_{\infty} \subset \mathcal{O}_0$ of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure such that for any $ω\in \mathcal{O}_{\infty}$, the system can be reduced to the one with constant coefficients by a quasi-periodic linear transformation. The strategy adopted in this paper consists of two steps: (a) A reduction based on the orders of the pseudo differential operators in the system which conjugates the linearized operator to a one with constant coefficients up to a small remainder; (b) A perturbative reducibility scheme which completely diagonalizes the remainder of the previous step. The main difficulties in the reducibility we need to tackle come from the operator $J=(1-\partial_{xx})^{-1}\partial_{x}$, which induces the symplectic structure of the dispersive Camassa-Holm equation.

A comprehensive review on the ferroelectric orthochromates: Synthesis, property, and application

Multiferroics represent a class of advanced materials for promising applications and stand at the forefront of modern science for the special feature possessing both charge polar and magnetic order. Previous studies indicate that the family of RECrO3 (RE = rare earth) compounds is likely another rare candidate system holding both ferroelectricity and magnetism. However, many issues remain unsolved, casting hot disputes about whether RECrO3 is multiferroic or not. For example, an incompatibility exists between reported structural models and observed ferroelectric behaviors, and it is not easy to determine the spin canting degree. To address these questions, one key step is to grow single crystals because they can provide more reliable information than other forms of matter do. In this review, the parent and doped ferroelectric YCrO3 compounds are comprehensively reviewed based on scientific and patent literatures from 1954 to 2022. The materials syntheses with different methods, including poly-, nano-, and single-crystalline samples and thin films, are summarized. The structural, magnetic, ferroelectric and dielectric, optical, and chemical-pressure (on Y and Cr sites by doping) dependent chemical and physical properties and the corresponding phase diagrams, are discussed. Diverse (potential) applications, including anti-corrosion, magnetohydrodynamic electrode, catalyst, negative-temperature-coefficient thermistor, magnetic refrigeration, protective coating, and solid oxide fuel cell, are present. To conclude, we summarize general results, reached consensuses, and existing controversies of the past nearly 69 years of intensive studies and highlight future research opportunities and emerging challenges to address existing issues.
