The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES). IV. Surface Gravity Estimation and Giant-Dwarf Separation with the DDO51 Filter

Reliable estimation of stellar surface gravity (log $g$) for a large sample is crucial for evaluating stellar evolution models and understanding galactic structure; However, it is not easy to accomplish due to the difficulty in gathering a large spectroscopic data set. Photometric sky survey using a specific filter, on the other hand, can play a substantial role in the assessment of log $g$. The Stellar Abundances and Galactic Evolution Survey (SAGES) utilizes eight filters to provide accurate stellar parameters for $\sim10^{7}$ stars, with its DDO51 intermediate-band filter specifically designed for robust log $g$ determination. In this work, the observed SAGES $u_{\rm SC}$ and $v_{\rm SAGES}$ photometry, the synthetic photometry in $g$, $r$, $i$, and DDO51 bands derived from \textit{Gaia} XP spectra are employed to investigate the importance of the DDO51 filter in the determination of log $g$. We applied machine-learning-based extinction correction and employed XGBoost models, trained on stellar parameters from LAMOST, to predict log $g$ using photometric data. By comparing model predicted log $g$ with LAMOST values, we find that including DDO51 filter improve the accuracies of log $g$ estimates by 21.0\% (from 0.224\,dex to 0.177\,dex) overall, and by 26.5\% (from 0.302\,dex to 0.222\,dex ) for GK-type stars, as compared to those obtained without DDO51. The DDO51 filter is also validated to be particularly effective for metal-poor stars ([Fe/H]$<$-1.0), where it significantly mitigates systematic biases. Our findings highlight the diagnostic power of the SAGES DDO51 filter, providing enhanced stellar characterization vital for future in-depth studies of the Milky Way.

Cavity QED based on strongly localized modes: exponentially enhancing single-atom cooperativity

Large single-atom cooperativity in quantum systems is important for quantum information processing. Here, we propose to exponentially enhance the single-atom cooperativity parameter by exploiting the strongly localized effect of modes in cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) systems. By increasing the wing width of a cavity with special geometry symmetry, the interference property allows us to exponentially improves the quality factor Q without altering the mode volume V for cavities supporting subwavelength light modes. This effectively overcomes the trade-off between Q and V in conventional subwavelength Fabry-Perot cavities. Consequently, we demonstrate the occurrence of ultra-long vacuum Rabi oscillations and the generation of strong photon blockade by enhancing the single-atom cooperativity parameter. This work offers a promising approach for advancing coherent manipulation and holds significant potential for applications in establishing longer-distance quantum communication networks, enhancing the precision and stability of quantum sensors, and improving the efficiency of quantum algorithms.

A Hybrid Prior Bayesian Method for Combining Domestic Real-World Data and Overseas Data in Global Drug Development

Background Hybrid clinical trial design integrates randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with real-world data (RWD) to enhance efficiency through dynamic incorporation of external data. Existing methods like the Meta-Analytic Predictive Prior (MAP) inadequately control data heterogeneity, adjust baseline discrepancies, or optimize dynamic borrowing proportions, introducing bias and limiting applications in bridging trials and multi-regional clinical trials (MRCTs). Objective This study proposes a novel hybrid Bayesian framework (EQPS-rMAP) to address heterogeneity and bias in multi-source data integration, validated through simulations and retrospective case analyses of risankizumab's efficacy in moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis. Design and Methods EQPS-rMAP eliminates baseline covariate discrepancies via propensity score stratification, constructs stratum-specific MAP priors to dynamically adjust external data weights, and introduces equivalence probability weights to quantify data conflict risks. Performance was evaluated across six simulated scenarios (heterogeneity differences, baseline shifts) and real-world case analyses, comparing it with traditional methods (MAP, PSMAP, EBMAP) on estimation bias, type I error control, and sample size requirements. Results Simulations show EQPS-rMAP maintains estimation robustness under significant heterogeneity while reducing sample size demands and enhancing trial efficiency. Case analyses confirm superior external bias control and accuracy compared to conventional approaches. Conclusion and Significance EQPS-rMAP provides empirical evidence for hybrid clinical designs. By resolving baseline-heterogeneity conflicts through adaptive mechanisms, it enables reliable integration of external and real-world data in bridging trials, MRCTs, and post-marketing studies, broadening applicability without compromising rigor.

Multicategory Matched Learning for Estimating Optimal Individualized Treatment Rules in Observational Studies with Application to a Hepatocellular Carcinoma Study

One primary goal of precision medicine is to estimate the individualized treatment rules (ITRs) that optimize patients' health outcomes based on individual characteristics. Health studies with multiple treatments are commonly seen in practice. However, most existing ITR estimation methods were developed for the studies with binary treatments. Many require that the outcomes are fully observed. In this paper, we propose a matching-based machine learning method to estimate the optimal ITRs in observational studies with multiple treatments when the outcomes are fully observed or right-censored. We establish theoretical property for the proposed method. It is compared with the existing competitive methods in simulation studies and a hepatocellular carcinoma study.

Chiral Interaction Induced Near-Perfect Photon Blockade

Based on the scattering matrix method, we theoretically demonstrate that the chiral interaction can induce the almost perfect photon blockade (PB) in the waveguide-cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) system. The mechanism relies on the multi-photon paths interference within the waveguide, which is clearly shown by the analytic parameter regime for $g^{(2)}(0)\approx0$. When $N$ cavities are introduced into the system, there are $N$ optimal parameter points accordingly for the almost perfect PB, where the required lowest chirality decreases exponentially with increasing $N$, and these optimal points are robust against disorder in the system's frequencies. Under resonant driving and fixed chirality conditions, the output light depends solely on the parity of $N$ ($N\ge2$), with a coherent state emerging for even numbers of cavities and a single-photon state for odd numbers. Our work offers an alternative route for achieving almost perfect PB effects with high single-photon transmission by employing the chirality of system, with potential application in the on-chip single-photon source with integrability.

The Mini-SiTian Array: Evaluation Camera System

The Mini-SiTian project, which is the pathfinder for the SiTian project, utilizes three 30 cm telescopes equipped with commercial CMOS cameras (ZWO ASI6200MM Pro) to simulate large-area time-domain survey. Due to the avoidance of the traditional mechanical shutter, the CMOS camera is favorable in time-domain survey projects. In the future, the SiTian telescope array will employ a two-by-two scientific-grade mosaic CMOS camera to survey a 10,000-degree square area every 30 minutes. Therefore, the performance of CMOS directly determines the detection capability of SiTian telescopes for transient sources, and a comprehensive understanding of the performance of CMOS cameras is crucial. In this research, laboratory testing was conducted to thoroughly evaluate three cameras by assessing several critical parameters, including bias stability, dark current, pixel anomalies, linearity, gain, and read noise. We find exceptional short-term bias stability with standard deviations below 0.02 ADU, negligible dark current of approximately 0.002 e$^{-}$ pixel$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ at $0^\circ\text{C}$, and excellent linearity with nonlinearity consistently below $\pm$ 0.5\%, and a small proportion (0.06\% to 0.08\%) of pixels with anomalous responses. Furthermore, our analysis demonstrates uniform gain values across all cameras, ranging from 0.252 to 0.255 e$^{-}$ ADU$^{-1}$, with low readout noise, measured to be below 1.6 e$^{-}$ using conventional methods. We also propose a novel method for pixel-level gain and read noise calculation for CMOS sensors, which revealed a narrow gain distribution and a low median read noise of 1.028 e$^-$ for one of the cameras. The laboratory testing of the ZWO ASI6200MM Pro cameras indicates their potential to meet the requirements of time-domain surveys for the Mini-SiTian project.

The Mini-SiTian Array: first-two-year operation

The SiTian project, designed to utilize 60 telescopes distributed across multiple sites in China, is a next-generation time-domain survey initiative. As a pathfinder for the SiTian project, the Mini-SiTian (MST) has been proposed and implemented to test the SiTian's brain and data pipeline, and to evaluate the feasibility of its technology and science cases. Mounted at the Xinglong Observatory, the MST project comprises three 30 cm telescopes and has been operated since Nov. 2022. Each telescope of the MST possesses a large field of view, covering $2.29^{\circ}$ $\times$ $1.53^{\circ}$ FOV, and is equipped with $g'$, $r'$ and $i'$ filters, respectively. Acting as the pioneer of the forthcoming SiTian project, the MST is dedicated to the discovery of variable stars, transients, and outburst events, and has already obtained some interesting scientific results. In this paper, we will summarize the first-two-year operation of the MST project.

From Intuition to Understanding: Using AI Peers to Overcome Physics Misconceptions

Generative AI has the potential to transform personalization and accessibility of education. However, it raises serious concerns about accuracy and helping students become independent critical thinkers. In this study, we designed a helpful AI "Peer" to help students correct fundamental physics misconceptions related to Newtonian mechanic concepts. In contrast to approaches that seek near-perfect accuracy to create an authoritative AI tutor or teacher, we directly inform students that this AI can answer up to 40% of questions incorrectly. In a randomized controlled trial with 165 students, those who engaged in targeted dialogue with the AI Peer achieved post-test scores that were, on average, 10.5 percentage points higher - with over 20 percentage points higher normalized gain - than a control group that discussed physics history. Qualitative feedback indicated that 91% of the treatment group's AI interactions were rated as helpful. Furthermore, by comparing student performance on pre- and post-test questions about the same concept, along with experts' annotations of the AI interactions, we find initial evidence suggesting the improvement in performance does not depend on the correctness of the AI. With further research, the AI Peer paradigm described here could open new possibilities for how we learn, adapt to, and grow with AI.

Incremental Object Keypoint Learning

Existing progress in object keypoint estimation primarily benefits from the conventional supervised learning paradigm based on numerous data labeled with pre-defined keypoints. However, these well-trained models can hardly detect the undefined new keypoints in test time, which largely hinders their feasibility for diverse downstream tasks. To handle this, various solutions are explored but still suffer from either limited generalizability or transferability. Therefore, in this paper, we explore a novel keypoint learning paradigm in that we only annotate new keypoints in the new data and incrementally train the model, without retaining any old data, called Incremental object Keypoint Learning (IKL). A two-stage learning scheme as a novel baseline tailored to IKL is developed. In the first Knowledge Association stage, given the data labeled with only new keypoints, an auxiliary KA-Net is trained to automatically associate the old keypoints to these new ones based on their spatial and intrinsic anatomical relations. In the second Mutual Promotion stage, based on a keypoint-oriented spatial distillation loss, we jointly leverage the auxiliary KA-Net and the old model for knowledge consolidation to mutually promote the estimation of all old and new keypoints. Owing to the investigation of the correlations between new and old keypoints, our proposed method can not just effectively mitigate the catastrophic forgetting of old keypoints, but may even further improve the estimation of the old ones and achieve a positive transfer beyond anti-forgetting. Such an observation has been solidly verified by extensive experiments on different keypoint datasets, where our method exhibits superiority in alleviating the forgetting issue and boosting performance while enjoying labeling efficiency even under the low-shot data regime.

Where do Large Vision-Language Models Look at when Answering Questions?

Large Vision-Language Models (LVLMs) have shown promising performance in vision-language understanding and reasoning tasks. However, their visual understanding behaviors remain underexplored. A fundamental question arises: to what extent do LVLMs rely on visual input, and which image regions contribute to their responses? It is non-trivial to interpret the free-form generation of LVLMs due to their complicated visual architecture (e.g., multiple encoders and multi-resolution) and variable-length outputs. In this paper, we extend existing heatmap visualization methods (e.g., iGOS++) to support LVLMs for open-ended visual question answering. We propose a method to select visually relevant tokens that reflect the relevance between generated answers and input image. Furthermore, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art LVLMs on benchmarks designed to require visual information to answer. Our findings offer several insights into LVLM behavior, including the relationship between focus region and answer correctness, differences in visual attention across architectures, and the impact of LLM scale on visual understanding. Are There High-Density Deep States in AtomicLayer-Deposited IGZO Thin Film?

It has been well recognized that there exist high-density deep states in IGZO thin films. Many of the device characteristics of IGZO transistors, such as negative bias illumination stability (NBIS),were understood to be related to these deep states. However, in this work, it is found that deep state density (NtD) of atomic-layer-deposited (ALD) IGZO transistors can be an ultra-low value (2.3*10^12 /cm^3) by the proposed NBIS-free light assisted I-V measurements so that the deep states do not affect the I-V characteristics even in subthreshold region. This work also reveals that NBIS is not related to the photoexcitation of electrons in deep states. Our results suggest that the existence of deep states and the impact of deep states on ALD IGZO transistors may need to be revisited.

Coexisting Euler and Stiefel-Whitney Topological Phases in Elastic Metamaterials

The study of topological band theory in classical structures has led to the development of novel topological metamaterials with intriguing properties. While single-gap topologies are well understood, recent novel multi-gap phases have garnished increasing interest. These novel phases are characterized by invariants, such as the Euler and second Stiefel-Whitney classes, which involve Bloch eigen-subspaces of multiple bands and can change by braiding in momentum space non-Abelian charged band degeneracies belonging to adjacent energy gaps. Here, we theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that two of such topological phases can coexist within a single system using vectorial elastic waves. The inherent coupling between different polarization modes enables non-Abelian braiding of nodal points of multiple energy band gaps and results in coexisting Euler and Stiefel-Whitney topological insulator phases. We furthermore unveil the central role played by the topologically stable Goldstone modes' degeneracy. Our findings represent the first realization of hybrid phases in vectorial fields exhibiting topologically nontrivial Goldstone modes, paving the way for bifunctional applications that leverage the coexistence of topological edge and corner states.

Floquet Engineering and Harnessing Giant Atoms in Frequency-Comb Emission and Bichromatic Correlations in Waveguide QED

The capability to design spectrally controlled photon emission is not only fundamentally interesting for understanding frequency-encoded light-matter interactions, but also is essential for realizing the preparation and manipulation of quantum states. Here we consider a dynamically modulated qubit array, and realize frequency-controlled single-photon emission focusing on the generation of a frequency comb constituted solely of even-parity or anti-Stokes sidebands. Our system also offers parity-dependent bunching and antibunching in frequency-filtered quantum correlations. In particular, the waveguide quantum electrodynamics (QED) setup is extended to include chiral and non-local coupling architectures, thereby enhancing its versatility in Floquet engineering. Our proposal also supports the predictable generation of high-dimensional entangled quantum states, where the corresponding effective Hilbert space dimension is well controlled by energy modulation. Moreover, the utilisation of sophisticated numerical tools, such as the matrix product states (MPSs) and the discretization approach, enables the efficient simulation of multi-photon dynamics, in which the non-Markovian Floquet steady states emerge. This work fundamentally broadens the fields of collective emission, and has wide applications in implementing frequency-encoded quantum information processing and many-body quantum simulation.

Quadrupole topological behavior of elastic waves in two-dimensional square lattices with nonsymmorphic symmetries

We investigate a novel higher-order topological behavior in elastic lattices characterized by nonsymmorphic symmetries. In the theoretical spring-mass lattice, altering the vertex mass allows for fine-tuning of the topological features within the bandgap. We analyze the quadrupole topological behavior in square lattices with nonsymmorphic symmetries using nested Wannier bands. Beyond second-order topological metamaterials, a single-phase topological configuration promotes energy localization at the corners due to a non-zero relative quadrupole moment. Our findings are validated through experimental observations of higher-order topological corner states, which show excellent agreement with simulated results and theoretical predictions. Additionally, the elastic lattices in the self-similar system exhibit fractal higher-order topological behaviors, revealing numerous topological edge and corner states. The self-similar lattice also demonstrates enhanced energy localization, with the number of topological states showing a linear correlation to the corner dimension. This study provides new insights into elastic higher-order topological insulators and inspires innovative strategies for simulating topological elastic materials.

Floquet Chern Vector Topological Insulators in Three Dimensions

We theoretically and numerically investigate Chern vector insulators and topological surface states in a three-dimensional lattice, based on phase-delayed temporal-periodic interactions within the tight-binding model. These Floquet interactions break time-reversal symmetry, effectively inducing a gauge field analogous to magnetic flux. This gauge field results in Chern numbers in all spatial dimensions, collectively forming the Chern vector. This vector characterizes the topological phases and signifies the emergence of robust surface states. Numerically, we observe these states propagating unidirectionally without backscattering on all open surfaces of the three-dimensional system. Our work paves the way for breaking time-reversal symmetry and realizing three-dimensional Chern vector topological insulators using temporal-periodic Floquet techniques.

Genuine Multipartite Entanglement induced by a Thermal Acoustic Reservoir

Genuine multipartite entanglement (GME) is not only fundamental interesting for the study of quantum-to-classical transition, but also is essential for realizing universal quantum computing and quantum networks. Here we investigate the multipartite entanglement (ME) dynamics in a linear chain of N LC resonators interacting optomechanically with a common thermal acoustic reservoir. By presenting the exact analytical solutions of system evolution, we predict the periodic generation of non-Gaussian ME, including the discrete and continuous variables entanglement. Interestingly, the GME is obtained even though the system is in a heat bath. The mechanism relies on the special acoustic environment featuring frequency comb structure. More importantly, our proposed model also allows the periodic generation of entangled multipartite cat states (MCSs), i.e., a typical GHZ state, with high fidelity. This work fundamentally broadens the fields of ME, and have wide applications in implementing thermal-noise-resistant quantum information processing and many-body quantum simulation.

Acoustic Zero-Index Metamaterials for Leaky-Wave Antennas

In this work, we introduce an advanced acoustic leaky-wave antenna employing zero-refractive-index metamaterials (ZIMs) that significantly surpasses traditional designs in terms of radiation ef-ficiency and directivity. Our design features a novel space-coiling structure, which manipulates the Dirac-like dispersion based on accidental degeneracy to achieve double-zero-index metamaterials (DZIM). The newly developed acoustic Dirac leaky-wave antenna (ADLWA) achieves more than double the radiation efficiency of conventional antennas based on arrays with side holes and mem-branes. It exhibits superior directional control, allowing for precise beam scanning by adjusting the frequency. Additionally, the ADLWA functions effectively as a passive sonar system, capable of de-tecting the direction of moving sound sources. This breakthrough enhances acoustic wave control and promises significant advancements in sensing and communication technologies.

Topological bosonic Bogoliubov excitations with sublattice symmetry

Here we investigate the internal sublattice symmetry, and thus the enriched topological classification of bosonic Bogoliubov excitations of thermodynamically stable free-boson systems with non-vanishing particle-number-nonconserving terms. Specifically, we show that such systems well described by the bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian can be in general reduced to particle-number-conserving (single-particle) ones. Building upon this observation, the sublattice symmetry is uncovered with respect to an excitation energy, which is usually hidden in the bosonic Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian. Thus, we obtain an additional topological class, i.e., class AIII, which enriches the framework for the topological threefold way of free-boson systems. Moreover, a construction is proposed to show a category of systems respecting such a symmetry. For illustration, we resort to a one-dimensional (1D) prototypical model to demonstrate the topological excitation characterized by a winding number or symplectic polarization. By introducing the correlation function, we present an approach to measure the topological invariant. In addition, the edge excitation together with its robustness to symmetry-preserving disorders is also discussed.
