Evolution from helical to collinear ferromagnetic order of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$

The ground-state magnetic structures of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in recently discovered RbEu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductors have been investigated by neutron powder diffraction measurements. It is found that as the superconductivity gets suppressed with the increase of Ni doping, the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice diminishes, corresponding to the decrease of the rotation angle between the moments in neighboring Eu layers. The ferromagnetic Eu layers are helically modulated along the $\mathit{c}$ axis with an incommensurate magnetic propagation vector in both the ferromagnetic superconductor RbEu(Fe$_{0.95}$Ni$_{0.05}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ and the superconducting ferromagnet RbEu(Fe$_{0.93}$Ni$_{0.07}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$. Such a helical structure transforms into a purely collinear ferromagnetic structure for non-superconducting RbEu(Fe$_{0.91}$Ni$_{0.09}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$, with all the Eu$^{2+}$ spins lying along the tetragonal (1 1 0) direction. The evolution from helical to collinear ferromagnetic order of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins with increasing Ni doping is supported by first-principles calculations. The variation of the rotation angle between adjacent Eu$^{2+}$ layers can be well explained by considering the change of magnetic exchange couplings mediated by the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction.

Magnetic field induced quantum spin liquid in the two coupled trillium lattices of K$_2$Ni$_2$(SO$_4$)$_3$

Quantum spin liquids are exotic states of matter which form when strongly frustrated magnetic interactions induce a highly entangled quantum paramagnet far below the energy scale of the magnetic interactions. Three-dimensional cases are especially challenging due to the significant reduction of the influence of quantum fluctuations. Here, we report the magnetic characterization of {\kni} forming a three dimensional network of Ni$^{2+}$ spins. Using density functional theory calculations we show that this network consists of two interconnected spin-1 trillium lattices. In the absence of a magnetic field, magnetization, specific heat, neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation experiments demonstrate a highly correlated and dynamic state, coexisting with a peculiar, very small static component exhibiting a strongly renormalized moment. A magnetic field $B \gtrsim 4$ T diminishes the ordered component and drives the system in a pure quantum spin liquid state. This shows that a system of interconnected $S=1$ trillium lattices exhibit a significantly elevated level of geometrical frustration.

Topological magnon insulators in two-dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets CrSiTe$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$: towards intrinsic gap-tunability

The bosonic analogues of topological insulators have been proposed in numerous theoretical works, but their experimental realization is still very rare, especially for spin systems. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) honeycomb van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets have emerged as a new platform for topological spin excitations. Here, via a comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering study and theoretical analysis of the spin-wave excitations, we report the realization of topological magnon insulators in CrXTe$_3$ (X=Si, Ge) compounds. The nontrivial nature and intrinsic tunability of the gap opening at the magnon band-crossing Dirac points are confirmed, while the emergence of the corresponding in-gap topological edge states is demonstrated theoretically. The realization of topological magnon insulators with intrinsic gap-tunability in this class of remarkable 2D materials will undoubtedly lead to new and fascinating technological applications in the domain of magnonics and topological spintronics.

Stacking faults in $α$-RuCl$_3$ revealed by local electric polarization

We present out-of-plane dielectric and magnetodielectric measurements of single crystallines $α$-RuCl$_3$ with various degrees of stack faults. A frequency dependent, but field independent, dielectric anomaly appears at $T_{A}\:(f=100\:\mathrm{kHz})\sim$ 4 K once both magnetic transitions at $T_{N1}\sim$ 7 K and $T_{N2}\sim$ 14 K set in. The observed dielectric anomaly is attributed to the emergency of possible local electric polarizations whose inversion symmetry is broken by inhomogeneously distributed stacking faults. A field-induced intermediate phase is only observed when a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the Ru-Ru bonds for samples with minimal stacking faults. Less pronounced in-plane anisotropy is found in samples with sizable contribution from stacking imperfections. Our findings suggest that dielectric measurement is a sensitive probe in detecting the structural and magnetic properties, which may be a promising tool especially in studying $α$-RuCl$_3$ thin film devices. Moreover, the stacking details of RuCl$_3$ layers strongly affect the ground state both in the magnetic and electric channels. Such a fragile ground state against stacking faults needs to be overcome for realistic applications utilizing the magnetic and/or electric properties of Kitaev based physics in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Magnetic Ordering in the Ising Antiferromagnetic Pyrochlore Nd2ScNbO7

The question of structural disorder and its effects on magnetism is relevant to a number of spin liquid candidate materials. Although commonly thought of as a route to spin glass behavior, here we describe a system in which the structural disorder results in long-range antiferromagnetic order due to local symmetry breaking. Nd$_2$ScNbO$_7$ is shown to have a dispersionless gapped excitation observed in other neodymium pyrochlores below T$_N$ = 0.37 K through polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. However the dispersing spin waves are not observed. This excited mode is shown to occur in only 14(2) \% of the neodymium ions through spectroscopy and is consistent with total scattering measurements as well as the magnitude of the dynamic moment 0.26(2) $μ_B$. The remaining magnetic species order completely into the all-in all-out Ising antiferromagnetic structure. This can be seen as a result of local symmetry breaking due disordered Sc$^{+3}$ and Nb$^{+5}$ ions about the A-site. From this work, it has been established that B-site disorder restores the dipole-like behaviour of the Nd$^{+3}$ ions compared to the Nd$_2$B$_2$O$_7$ parent series.

The interplay of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions for magnonic properties of Heisenberg-Kitaev honeycomb ferromagnets

The properties of Kitaev materials are attracting ever increasing attention owing to their exotic properties. In realistic two-dimensional materials, Kitaev interaction is often accompanied by the Dzyloshinskii-Moriya interaction, which poses a challenge of distinguishing their magnitude separately. In this work, we demonstrate that it can be done by accessing magnonic transport properties. By studying honeycomb ferromagnets exhibiting Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Kitaev interactions simultaneously, we reveal non-trivial magnonic topological properties accompanied by intricate magnonic transport characteristics as given by thermal Hall and magnon Nernst effects. We also investigate the effect of a magnetic field, showing that it does not only break the symmetry of the system but also brings drastic modifications to magnonic topological transport properties, which serve as hallmarks of the relative strength of anisotropic exchange interactions. Based on our findings, we suggest strategies to estimate the importance of Kitaev interactions in real materials.

In-plane uniaxial pressure-induced out-of-plane antiferromagnetic moment and critical fluctuations in BaFe$_2$As$_2$

A small in-plane external uniaxial pressure has been widely used as an effective method to acquire single domain iron pnictide BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which exhibits twin-domains without uniaxial strain below the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural (nematic) transition temperature $T_s$. Although it is generally assumed that such a pressure will not affect the intrinsic electronic/magnetic properties of the system, it is known to enhance the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering temperature $T_N$ ($<T_s$) and create in-plane resistivity anisotropy above $T_s$. Here we use neutron polarization analysis to show that such a strain on BaFe$_2$As$_2$ also induces a static or quasi-static out-of-plane ($c$-axis) AF order and its associated critical spin fluctuations near $T_N/T_s$. Therefore, uniaxial pressure necessary to detwin single crystals of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ actually rotates the easy axis of the collinear AF order near $T_N/T_s$, and such effect due to spin-orbit coupling must be taken into account to unveil the intrinsic electronic/magnetic properties of the system.

Magnetic structures, spin-flop transition and coupling of Eu and Mn magnetism in the Dirac semimetal EuMnBi$_2$

We report here a comprehensive study of the AFM structures of the Eu and Mn magnetic sublattices as well as the interplay between Eu and Mn magnetism in this compound by using both polarized and non-polarized single-crystal neutron diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility, specific heat capacity measurements and the temperature dependence of magnetic diffractions suggest that the AFM ordering temperature of the Eu and Mn moments is at 22 and 337 K, respectively. The magnetic moments of both Eu and Mn ions are oriented along the crystallographic $c$ axis, and the respective magnetic propagation vector is $\textbf{k}_{Eu} = (0,0,1)$ and $\textbf{k}_{Mn}=(0,0,0)$. With proper neutron absorption correction, the ordered moments are refined at 3 K as 7.7(1) $μ_B$ and 4.1(1) $μ_B$ for the Eu and Mn ions, respectively. In addition, a spin-flop (SF) phase transition of the Eu moments in an applied magnetic field along the $c$ axis was confirmed to take place at a critical field of B$_c$ $\sim$ 5.3 T. The evolution of the Eu magnetic moment direction as a function of the applied magnetic field in the SF phase was also determined. Clear kinks in both field and temperature dependence of the magnetic reflections ($\pm1$, 0, 1) of Mn were observed at the onset of the SF phase transition and the AFM order of the Eu moments, respectively. This unambiguously indicates the existence of a strong coupling between Eu and Mn magnetism. The interplay between two magnetic sublattices could bring new possibilities to tune Dirac fermions via changing magnetic structures by applied fields in this class of magnetic topological semimetals.

Plaquette instability competing with bicollinear ground state in detwinned FeTe

We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that long-range spin waves arising from the static bicollinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order in FeTe, which have twofold rotational symmetry in a fully detwinned crystal, rapidly dissolve above $E\approx 26$ meV into ridges of scattering with fourfold rotational symmetry and a nearly isotropic magnetic fluctuation spectrum. With increasing temperature above $T_N\approx 68$ K, the twofold spin waves change into broad regions of scattering with fourfold symmetry. Since the scattering patterns from plaquette magnetic order generated within a bilinear biquadratic Hamiltonian have fourfold rotational symmetry consistent with the high-energy, spin-isotropic spin waves of FeTe, we conclude that the bicollinear AF state in FeTe is quasidegenerate with plaquette magnetic order, providing evidence for the strongly frustrated nature of the local moments in iron chalcogenide family of iron-based superconductors.

Coexistence of ferromagnetic and stripe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$

We use inelastic neutron scattering to study energy and wave vector dependence of spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$, derived from SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ iron pnictide superconductors. Our data reveals the coexistence of antiferromagnetic (AF) and ferromagnetic (FM) spin fluctuations at wave vectors $\textbf{Q}_{\rm AF}$=(1,0) and $\textbf{Q}_{\rm FM}$=(0,0)/(2,0), respectively. By comparing neutron scattering results with those of dynamic mean field theory calculation and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, we conclude that both AF and FM spin fluctuations in SrCo$_2$As$_2$ are closely associated with a flat band of the $e_g$ orbitals near the Fermi level, different from the $t_{2g}$ orbitals in superconducting SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$. Therefore, Co-substitution in SrFe$_{2-x}$Co$_x$As$_2$ induces a $t_{2g}$ to $e_g$ orbital switching, and is responsible for FM spin fluctuations detrimental to the singlet pairing superconductivity.

Intermultiplet transitions and magnetic long-range order in Sm-based pyrochlores

We present bulk and neutron scattering measurements performed on the isotopically enriched $^{154}\mathrm{Sm_2Ti_2O_7}$ and $^{154}\mathrm{Sm_2Sn_2O_7}$ samples. Both compounds display sharp heat capacity anomalies, at 350 mK and 440 mK, respectively. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are employed to determine the crystalline electric field (CEF) level scheme, which includes transitions between the ground-state and first excited $J$ multiplets of the $\mathrm{Sm}^{3+}$ ion. To further validate those results, the single-ion magnetic susceptibility of the compounds is calculated and compared with the experimental DC-susceptibility measured in low applied magnetic fields. It is demonstrated that the inclusion of intermultiplet transitions in the CEF analysis is fundamental to the understanding of the intermediate and, more importantly, low temperature magnetic behaviour of the Sm-based pyrochlores. Finally, the heat capacity anomaly is shown to correspond to the onset of an all-in-all-out long-range order in the stannate sample, while in the titanate a dipolar long-range order can be only indirectly inferred.

Unusual double-peak specific heat and spin freezing in a spin-2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$

We report the properties of a triangular lattice iron-chalcogenide antiferromagnet FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$. The spin susceptibility reveals a significant antiferromagnetic interaction with a Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ ~ -200K and a spin-2 local moment. Despite a large spin and a large |Θ$_{CW}$|, the low-temperature behaviors are incompatible with conventional classical magnets. No long-range order is detected down to 0.4K. Similar to the well-known spin-1 magnet NiGa$_{2}$S$_{4}$, the specific heat of FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$ exhibits an unusual double-peak structure and a T$^{2}$ power law at low temperatures, which are attributed to the underlying quadrupolar spin correlations and the Halperin-Saslow modes, respectively. The spin freezing occurs at ~ 14K, below which the relaxation dynamics is probed by the ac susceptibility. Our results are consistent with the early theory for the spin-1 system with Heisenberg and biquadratic spin interactions. We argue that the early proposal of the quadrupolar correlation and gauge glass dynamics may be well extended to FeAl$_{2}$Se$_{4}$. Our results provide useful insights about the magnetic properties of frustrated quantum magnets with high spins.

Spin-isotropic continuum of spin excitations in antiferromagnetically ordered Fe$_{1.07}$Te

Unconventional superconductivity typically emerges in the presence of quasi-degenerate ground states, and the associated intense fluctuations are likely responsible for generating the superconducting state. Here we use polarized neutron scattering to study the spin space anisotropy of spin excitations in Fe$_{1.07}$Te exhibiting bicollinear antiferromagnetic (AF) order, the parent compound of FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ superconductors. We confirm that the low energy spin excitations are transverse spin waves, consistent with a local-moment origin of the bicollinear AF order. While the ordered moments lie in the $ab$-plane in Fe$_{1.07}$Te, it takes less energy for them to fluctuate out-of-plane, similar to BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and NaFeAs. At energies above $E\gtrsim20$ meV, we find magnetic scattering to be dominated by an isotropic continuum that persists up to at least 50 meV. Although the isotropic spin excitations cannot be ascribed to spin waves from a long-range ordered local moment antiferromagnet, the continuum can result from the bicollinear magnetic order ground state of Fe$_{1.07}$Te being quasi-degenerate with plaquette magnetic order.

Uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure effects in alpha-RuCl3 single crystals via thermal-expansion measurements

We present high-resolution thermal-expansion and specific-heat measurements of single crystalline alpha-RuCl3. An extremely hysteretic structural transition expanding over 100 K is observed by thermal- expansion along both crystallographic axes, which we attribute to a change of stacking sequence of the RuCl3 layers. Three magnetic transitions are observed, which we link to the different stacking sequences. Using our data and thermodynamic relations, we derive the uniaxial and hydrostatic pressure derivatives of all three magnetic transitions. Our results demonstrate that magnetic order should be totally suppressed by very moderate pressures of 0.3 GPa to 0.9 GPa. Finally, we discuss why our results differ from recent hydrostatic pressure measurements and suggest a possible route to reaching the spin-liquid state in alpha-RuCl3.

Magnetic Excitations in the Ground State of $\mathrm{Yb_2Ti_2O_7}$

We report an extensive study on the zero field ground state of a powder sample of the pyrochlore $\mathrm{Yb_2Ti_2O_7}$. A sharp heat capacity anomaly that labels a low temperature phase transition in this material is observed at 280 mK. Neutron diffraction shows that a \emph{quasi-collinear} ferromagnetic order develops below $T_\mathrm{c}$ with a magnetic moment of $0.87(2)μ_\mathrm{B}$. High resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements show, below the phase transition temperature, sharp gapped low-lying magnetic excitations coexisting with a remnant quasielastic contribution likely associated with persistent spin fluctuations. Moreover, a broad inelastic continuum of excitations at $\sim0.6$ meV is observed from the lowest measured temperature up to at least 2.5 K. At 10 K, the continuum has vanished and a broad quasielastic conventional paramagnetic scattering takes place at the observed energy range. Finally, we show that the exchange parameters obtained within the framework of linear spin-wave theory do not accurately describe the observed zero field inelastic neutron scattering data.

Temperature and polarization dependence of low-energy magnetic fluctuations in nearly-optimal-doped NaFe$_{0.9785}$Co$_{0.0215}$As

We use unpolarized and polarized neutron scattering to study the temperature and polarization dependence of low-energy magnetic fluctuations in nearly-optimal-doped NaFe$_{0.9785}$Co$_{0.0215}$As, with coexisting superconductivity ($T_{\rm c}\approx19$ K) and weak antiferromagnetic order ($T_{\rm N}\approx30$ K, ordered moment $\approx0.02$ $μ_{\rm B}$/Fe). A single spin resonance mode with intensity tracking the superconducting order parameter is observed, although energy of the mode only softens slightly on approaching $T_{\rm c}$. Polarized neutron scattering reveals that the single resonance is mostly isotropic in spin space, similar to overdoped NaFe$_{0.935}$Co$_{0.045}$As but different from optimal electron-, hole-, and isovalent-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ compounds, all featuring an additional prominent anisotropic component. Spin anisotropy in NaFe$_{0.9785}$Co$_{0.0215}$As is instead present at energies below the resonance, which becomes partially gapped below $T_{\rm c}$, similar to the situation in optimal-doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.9}$. Our results indicate that anisotropic spin fluctuations in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As appear in the form of a resonance in the underdoped regime, become partially gapped below $T_{\rm c}$ near optimal doping and disappear in overdoped compounds.

Absence of magnetism in the superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O: Insights from inelastic neutron scattering measurements and ab initio calculations of phonon spectra

Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O is a self-doped superconductor exhibiting a Tc ~ 21.5 K and containing, distinctively with respect to other Fe-based superconductors, not only [Fe2As2] layers but also conducting [Ti2O] sheets. This compound exhibits a transition at T* ~ 125 K which has tentatively been assigned in the literature to a possible density-wave order. However, the nature of this density wave (whether it is a charge- or spin-induced) is still under debate. Magnetism in Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O has never been experimentally confirmed, which raises the question whether this superconductor might be non-magnetic or exhibiting a very weak magnetism. Here, we report evidence from inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and ab initio calculations of phonon spectra pointing towards absence of magnetism in Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O. The INS measurements did not reveal any noticeable change of the phonon spectra across Tc, neither could magnetic effects be observed within the accessible (Q, E) space, setting Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O as an unconventional superconductor. The effect of magnetism on describing phonon spectra was further investigated by performing ab initio calculations. In this context, non-magnetic calculations reproduced well the measured phonon spectra. Therefore, our results indicate a non-magnetic and unconventional character of the superconductor Ba2Ti2Fe2As4O.

Spin anisotropy due to spin-orbit coupling in optimally hole-doped Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We use polarized inelastic neutron scattering to study the temperature and energy dependence of spin space anisotropies in the optimally hole-doped iron pnictide Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{\rm c}=38$ K). In the superconducting state, while the high-energy part of the magnetic spectrum is nearly isotropic, the low-energy part displays a pronouced anisotropy, manifested by a $c$-axis polarized resonance. We also observe that the spin anisotropy in superconducting Ba$_{0.67}$K$_{0.33}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ extends to higher energies compared to electron-doped BaFe$_{2-x}TM_{x}$As$_{2}$ ($TM=$Co, Ni) and isovalent-doped BaFe$_{2}$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$, suggesting a connection between $T_{\rm c}$ and the energy scale of the spin anisotropy. In the normal state, the low-energy spin anisotropy for optimally hole- and electron-doped iron pnictides onset at temperatures similar to the temperatures at which the elastoresistance deviate from Curie-Weiss behavior, pointing to a possible connection between the two phenomena. Our results highlight the relevance of the spin-orbit coupling to the superconductivity of the iron pnictides.
