Mueller's dipole wave function in QCD: emergent KNO scaling in the double logarithm limit

We analyze Mueller's QCD dipole wave function evolution in the double logarithm approximation (DLA). Using complex analytical methods, we show that the distribution of dipole in the wave function (gluon multiplicity distribution) asymptotically satisfies the Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling, with a non-trivial scaling function $f(z)$ with $z=\frac n{\bar n}$. The scaling function decays exponentially as $2(2.55)^2ze^{-\frac{z}{0.3917}}$ at large $z$, while its growth is log-normal as $e^{-\frac{1}{2}\ln^2 z}$ for small-$z$. A detailed analysis of the Fourier-Laplace transform of $f(z)$, allows for performing the inverse Fourier transform, and access the non-asymptotic bulk-region around the peak. The bulk and asymptotic results are shown to be in good agreement with the measured hadronic multiplicities in DIS, as reported by the H1 collaboration at HERA in the region of large $Q^2$. A numerical tabulation of $f(z)$ is included. Remarkably, the same scaling function is found to emerge in the resummation of double logarithms in the evolution of jets. Using the generating function approach, we show why this is the case. The absence of KNO scaling in non-critical and super-renormalizable theories is briefly discussed. We also discuss the universal character of the entanglement entropy in the KNO scaling limit, and its measurement using the emitted multiplicities in DIS and $e^+e^-$ annihilation.

Threshold resummation for computing large-$x$ parton distribution through large-momentum effective theory

Parton distribution functions (PDFs) at large $x$ are poorly constrained by high-energy experimental data, but extremely important for probing physics beyond standard model at colliders. We study the calculation of PDFs at large-$x$ through large-momentum $P^z$ expansion of the lattice quasi PDFs. Similar to deep-inelastic scattering, there are two distinct perturbative scales in the threshold limit where the matching coefficient can be factorized into a space-like jet function at scale $P^z|1-y|$ and a pair of heavy-light Sudakov form factors at scale $P^z$. The matching formula allows us to derive a full renormalization group resummation of large threshold logarithms, and the result is consistent with the known calculation to the next-to-next to leading order (NNLO). This paves the way for direct large-$x$ PDFs calculations in lattice QCD. As by-products, we find that the space-like jet function is related to a time-like version calculated previously through analytic continuation, and the heavy-light Sudakov form factor, calculated here to NNLO, is a universal object appearing as well in the large momentum expansion of quasi transverse-momentum-dependent PDFs and quasi wave-function amplitudes.

Gravitational Tensor-Monopole Moment of Hydrogen Atom To Order ${\cal O}(α)$

We calculate the gravitational tensor-monopole moment of the momentum-current density $T^{ij}$ in the ground state of the hydrogen atom to order ${\cal O}(α)$ in quantum electrodynamics (QED). The result is \begin{align} τ_H/τ_0 - 1 = \frac{4α}{3π}\left(\lnα^2-0.028\right) \nonumber \end{align} where $τ_0= \hbar^2/4m_e$ is the leading-order moment. The physics of the next-to-leading-order correction is similar to that of the famous Lamb shift for energy levels.

Universality of Koba-Nielsen-Olesen scaling in QCD at high energy and entanglement

Using Mueller's dipole formalism for deep inelastic scattering in QCD, we formulate and solve the evolution for the generating function for the multiplicities of the produced particles, in hadronic processes at high energy. The solution for the multiplicities satisfies Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling, with good agreement with the recently re-analyzed data from the H1 experiment at HERA (DESY), and the old ALEPH data for hadronic $Z$ decay at LEP (CERN). The same scaling function with KNO scaling, carries to the hadronic multiplicities from jets in electron-positron annihilation. This agreement is {\it a priori} puzzling, since in Mueller's dipole evolution, one accounts for virtual dipoles in a wave function, whereas in electron-positron annihilation, one describes cross-sections of real particles. We explain the origin of this similarity, pointing at a particular duality between the two processes. Finally, we interpret our results from the point of view of quantum entanglement between slow and fast degrees of freedom in QCD, and derive the entanglement entropy pertinent to electron-positron annihilation into hadronic jets.

Rapidity evolution of the entanglement entropy in quarkonium: parton and string duality

We investigate the quantum entanglement in rapidity space of the soft gluon wave function of a quarkonium, in theories with non-trivial rapidity evolutions. We found that the rapidity evolution drastically changes the behavior of the entanglement entropy, at any given order in perturbation theory. At large $N_c$, the reduced density matrices that "resum" the leading rapidity-logs can be explicitly constructed, and shown to satisfy Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK)-like evolution equations. We study their entanglement entropy in a simplified $1+1$ toy model, and in 3D QCD. The entanglement entropy in these cases, after re-summation, is shown to saturate the Kolmogorov-Sinai bound of 1. Remarkably, in 3D QCD the essential growth rate of the entanglement entropy is found to vanish at large rapidities, a result of kinematical "quenching" in transverse space. The one-body reduction of the entangled density matrix obeys a BFKL evolution equation, which can be recast as an evolution in an emergent AdS space, at large impact-parameter and large rapidity. This observation allows the extension of the perturbative wee parton evolution at low-x, to a dual non-perturbative evolution of string bits in curved AdS$_5$ space, with manifest entanglement entropy in the confining regime.

Momentum-Current Gravitational Multipoles of Hadrons

We study multipole expansion of the momentum currents in hadrons, with three series $S^{(J)}$, $\tilde T^{(J)}$, and $T^{(J)}$, in connection with the gravitational fields generated nearby. The momentum currents are related to their energy-momentum form factors, which in principle can be probed through processes like deeply-virtual Compton scattering currently studied at JLab 12 GeV facility and future Electron Ion Collider. We define the leading momentum-current multipoles, tensor monopole $τ$ ($T0$) and scalar quadrupole $\hat σ^{ij}$ ($S2$) moments, relating the former to the so-called $D$-term in the literature. We calculate the momentum current distribution in hydrogen atom and its monopole moment in the basic unit of $τ_0 =\hbar^2/4M$, showing that the sign of $D$-term has little to do with mechanical stability. The momentum current distribution also strongly modifies the static gravitational field inside hadrons.

Spatial entanglement in two dimensional QCD: Renyi and Ryu-Takayanagi entropies

We derive a general formula for the replica partition function in the vacuum state, for a large class of interacting theories with fermions, with or without gauge fields, using the equal-time formulation on the light front. The result is used to analyze the spatial entanglement of interacting Dirac fermions in two-dimensional QCD. A particular attention is paid to the issues of infrared cut-off dependence and gauge invariance. The Renyi entropy for a single interval, is given by the rainbow dressed quark propagator to order ${\cal O}(N_c)$. The contributions to order ${\cal O}(1)$, are shown to follow from the off-diagonal and off mass-shell mesonic T-matrix, with no contribution to the central charge. The construction is then extended to mesonic states on the light front, and shown to probe the moments of the partonic PDFs for large light-front separations. In the vacuum and for small and large intervals, the spatial entanglement entropy following from the Renyi entropy, is shown to be in agreement with the Ryu-Takayanagi geometrical entropy, using a soft-wall AdS$_3$ model of two-dimensional QCD.

Entanglement entropy and flow in two dimensional QCD: parton and string duality

We discuss quantum entanglement between fast and slow degrees of freedom, in a two dimensional (2D) large $N_c$ gauge theory with Dirac quarks, quantized on the light front. Using the 't Hooft wave functions, we construct the reduced density matrix for an interval in the momentum fraction $x$-space, and calculate its von Neumann entropy in terms of structure functions, that are measured by DIS on mesons (hadrons in general). We found that the entropy is bounded by an area law with logarithmic divergences, proportional to the rapidity of the meson. The evolution of the entanglement entropy with rapidity, is fixed by the cumulative singlet PDF, and bounded from above by a Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy of 1. At low-$x$, the entanglement exhibits an asymptotic expansion, similar to the forward meson-meson scattering amplitude in the Regge limit. The evolution of the entanglement entropy in parton-$x$ per unit rapidity, measures the meson singlet PDF. The re-summed entanglement entropy along the single meson Regge trajectory, is string-like. We suggest that its extension to multi-meson states, models DIS scattering on a large 2D $^\prime$nucleus$^\prime$. The result, is a large rate of change of the entanglement entropy with rapidity, that matches the current Bekenstein-Bremermann bound for maximum quantum information flow. This mechanism may be at the origin of the large entropy deposition and rapid thermalization, reported in current heavy ion colliders, and may extend to future electron-ion colliders.

Hyperons and $Θ_s^+$ in Holographic QCD

We revisit the holographic description of strange baryons in the context of the Sakai-Sugimoto construction, by considering the strange quark mass as heavy. Hyperons are described by a massive $(K,K^*)$ multiplet, bound to a light-flavor instanton in bulk, much in the spirit of the Callan-Klebanov construction. The modular Hamiltonian maps onto the Landau problem, a charged particle in a 2-dimensional external magnetic field, induced by the bulk Chern-Simons interaction, plus spin-orbit coupling. The ensuing holographic hyperon spectrum compares fairly with the empirical one. The holographic strange pentaquark baryon $Θ^+_s$ is shown to be unbound.

Holographic tetraquarks and the newly observed $T_{cc}^{+}$ at LHCb

We describe a heavy and exotic tetraquark state as a holographic molecule, by binding the lightest heavy-light meson $(0^-, 1^-)$ multiplet to a flavored sphaleron, in the bulk of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model. Bound tetraquark states emerge as Efimov states in the heavy quark limit, with a binding energy for charm tetraquark comparable to the $T_{cc}^+$ recently reported by the LHCb, but a substantially smaller width, for a large but finite $^\prime$t Hooft coupling. Fixing the parameters of the model at the empirical mass of $T_{cc}^+$ allows us to predict the bindings of the undiscovered so far bottom-charm and bottom tetraquarks, when interpreted as Efimov states.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks III: Excitations through photo-production of heavy mesons

We consider the photo-excitation of charm and bottom pentaquarks with the holographic assignments $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$, in the photo-production of heavy vector mesons such as charmonia and bottomonia near threshold. We use a Witten diagram to combine the s-channel photo-excitation of holographic pentaquarks with a massive t-channel graviton or tensor glueball exchange, to extract the scattering amplitude for heavy meson photo-production in the threshold region. The pentaquark signal is too weak to be detected at current electron facilities.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks II: Open and hidden decay widths

We analyze the decay modes of the three $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$ non-strange pentaquarks with hidden charm and bottom, predicted by holographic QCD in the heavy quark limit. In leading order, the pentaquarks %are composed of heavy-light mesons in bulk bound to an instanton core. They are degenerate and stable by heavy quark symmetry. At next to leading order, the spin interactions lift the degeneracy and cause the pentaquarks to decay. We show that the open charm (bottom) decay modes dwarf the hidden charm (bottom) ones, with total widths that are consistent with those recently reported by LHCb for charm pentaquarks. Predictions for bottom pentaquarks are given.

Holographic charm and bottom pentaquarks I: Mass spectra with spin effects

We revisit the three non-strange pentaquarks $[\frac 12\frac 12^-]_{S=0,1}$ and $[\frac 12\frac 32^-]_{S=1}$ predicted using the holographic dual description, where chiral and heavy quark symmetry are manifest in the triple limit of a large number of colors, large quark mass and strong $^\prime$t Hooft gauge coupling. In the heavy quark limit, the pentaquarks with internal heavy quark spin $S$ are all degenerate. The holographic pentaquarks are dual to an instanton bound to heavy mesons in bulk, without the shortcomings related to the nature of the interaction and the choice of the hard core inherent to the molecular constructions. We explicitly derive the spin-spin and spin-orbit couplings arising from next to leading order in the heavy quark mass, and lift totally the internal spin degeneray, in fair agreement with the newly reported charmed pentaquarks from LHCb. New charm and bottom pentaquark states are predicted.

Computing Light-Front Wave Functions Without Light-Front Quantization: A Large-Momentum Effective Theory Approach

Light-front wave functions play a fundamental role in the light-front quantization approach to QCD and hadron structure. However, a naive implementation of the light-front quantization suffers from various subtleties including the well-known zero-mode problem, the associated rapidity divergences which mixes ultra-violet divergences with infrared physics, as well as breaking of spatial rotational symmetry. We advocate that the light-front quantization should be viewed as an effective theory in which small $k^+$ modes have been effectively ``integrated out'', with an infinite number of renormalization constants. Instead of solving light-front quantized field theories directly, we make the large momentum expansion of the equal-time Euclidean correlation functions in instant quantization as an effective way to systematically calculate light-front correlations, including the light-front wave function amplitudes. This large-momentum effective theory accomplishes an effective light-front quantization through lattice QCD calculations. We demonstrate our approach using an example of a pseudo-scalar meson wave function.

Scale symmetry breaking, quantum anomalous energy and proton mass decomposition

We study the anomalous scale symmetry breaking effects on the proton mass in QCD due to quantum fluctuations at ultraviolet scales. We confirm that a novel contribution naturally arises as a part of the proton mass, which we call the quantum anomalous energy (QAE). We discuss the QAE origins in both lattice and dimensional regularizations and demonstrate its role as a scheme-and-scale independent component in the mass decomposition. We further argue that QAE role in the proton mass resembles a dynamical Higgs mechanism, in which the anomalous scale symmetry breaking field generates mass scales through its vacuum condensate, as well as its static and dynamical responses to the valence quarks. We demonstrate some of our points in two simpler but closely related quantum field theories, namely the 1+1 dimensional non-linear sigma model in which QAE is non-perturbative and scheme-independent, and QED where the anomalous energy effect is perturbative calculable.

Large-Momentum Effective Theory

Since the parton model was introduced by Feynman more than fifty years ago, we have learned much about the partonic structure of the proton through a large body of high-energy experimental data and dedicated global fits. However, calculating the partonic observables such as parton distribution function (PDFs) from the fundamental theory of strong interactions, QCD, has made limited progress. Recently, the authors have advocated a formalism, large-momentum effective theory (LaMET), through which one can extract parton physics from the properties of the proton travelling at a moderate boost-factor, e.g., $γ\sim (2-5)$. The key observation behind this approach is that Lorentz symmetry allows the standard formalism of partons in terms of light-front operators to be replaced by an equivalent one with large-momentum states and time-independent operators of a universality class. With LaMET, the PDFs, generalized PDFs or GPDs, transverse-momentum-dependent PDFs, and light-front wave functions can all be extracted in principle from lattice simulations of QCD (or other non-perturbative methods) through standard effective field theory matching and running. Future lattice QCD calculations with exa-scale computational facilities can help to understand the experimental data related to the hadronic structure, including those from the upcoming Electron-Ion Colliders dedicated to exploring the partonic landscape of the proton. Here we review the progress made in the past few years in development of the LaMET formalism and its applications, particularly on the demonstration of its effectiveness from initial lattice QCD simulations.

QCD Analysis of Near-Threshold Photon-Proton Production of Heavy Quarkonium

The near threshold photo or electroproduction of heavy vector quarkonium off the proton is studied in quantum chromodynamics. Similar to the high-energy limit, the production amplitude can be factorized in terms of gluonic Generalized Parton Distributions and the quarkonium distribution amplitude. At the threshold, the threshold kinematics has a large skewness parameter $ξ$, leading to the dominance of the spin-2 contribution over higher-spin twist-2 operators. Thus threshold production data are useful to extract the gluonic gravitational form factors, allowing studying the gluonic contributions to the quantum anomalous energy, mass radius, spin and mechanical pressure in the proton. We use the recent GlueX data on the $J/ψ$ photoproduction to illustrate the potential physics impact from the high-precision data from future JLab 12 GeV and EIC physics program.

Self-Renormalization of Quasi-Light-Front Correlators on the Lattice

In applying large-momentum effective theory, renormalization of the Euclidean correlators in lattice regularization is a challenge due to linear divergences in the self-energy of Wilson lines. Based on lattice QCD matrix elements of the quasi-PDF operator at lattice spacing $a$= 0.03 fm $\sim$ 0.12 fm with clover and overlap valence quarks on staggered and domain-wall sea, we design a strategy to disentangle the divergent renormalization factors from finite physics matrix elements, which can be matched to a continuum scheme at short distance such as dimensional regularization and minimal subtraction. Our results indicate that the renormalization factors are universal in the hadron state matrix elements. Moreover, the physical matrix elements appear independent of the valence fermion formulations. These conclusions remain valid even with HYP smearing which reduces the statistical errors albeit reducing control of the renormalization procedure. Moreover, we find a large non-perturbative effect in the popular RI/MOM and ratio renormalization scheme, suggesting favor of the hybrid renormalization procedure proposed recently.
