Gray tensor products and lax functors of $(\infty,2)$-categories

We give a definition of the Gray tensor product in the setting of scaled simplicial sets which is associative and forms a left Quillen bifunctor with respect to the bicategorical model category of Lurie. We then introduce a notion of oplax functor in this setting, and use it in order to characterize the Gray tensor product by means of a universal property. A similar characterization was used by Gaitsgory and Rozenblyum in their definition of the Gray product, thus giving a promising lead for comparing the two settings.

Zéro-cycles sur les espaces homogènes et problème de Galois inverse

Let X be a smooth compactification of a homogeneous space of a linear algebraic group G over a number field k. We establish the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito on the image of the Chow group of zero-cycles of X in the product of the same groups over all the completions of k. When G is semisimple and simply connected and the geometric stabiliser is finite and supersolvable, we show that rational points of X are dense in the Brauer-Manin set. For finite supersolvable groups, in particular for finite nilpotent groups, this yields a new proof of Shafarevich's theorem on the inverse Galois problem, and solves, at the same time, Grunwald's problem, for these groups.

Lax limits of model categories

For a diagram of simplicial combinatorial model categories, we show that the associated lax limit, endowed with the projective model structure, is a presentation of the lax limit of the underlying $\infty$-categories. Our approach can also allow for the indexing category to be simplicial, as long as the diagram factors through its homotopy category. Analogous results for the associated homotopy limit (and other intermediate limits) directly follow.

Ambidexterity and the universality of finite spans

Pursuing the notions of ambidexterity and higher semiadditivity as developed by Hopkins and Lurie, we prove that the span $\infty$-category of $m$-finite spaces is the free $m$-semiadditive $\infty$-category generated by a single object. Passing to presentable $\infty$-categories we obtain a description of the free presentable $m$-semiadditive $\infty$-category in terms of a new notion of $m$-commutative monoids, which can be described as spaces in which families of points parameterized by $m$-finite spaces can be coherently summed. Such an abstract summation procedure can be used to give a formal $\infty$-categorical definition of the finite path integral described by Freed, Hopkins, Lurie and Teleman in the context of 1-dimensional topological field theories.

The tangent bundle of a model category

This paper studies the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in a model category from a global point of view. More precisely, for a model category $\mathcal{M}$ satisfying suitable conditions, we construct a relative model category $\mathcal{TM} \to \mathcal{M}$, called the tangent bundle, whose fibers are models for spectra in the various over-categories of $\mathcal{M}$, and which presents the $\infty$-categorical tangent bundle. Moreover, the tangent bundle $\mathcal{TM}$ inherits an enriched model structure when such a structure exists on $\mathcal{M}$. This additional structure is used in subsequent work to identify the tangent bundles of algebras over an operad and of enriched categories.

Quillen cohomology of $(\infty,2)$-categories

In this paper we study the homotopy theory of parameterized spectrum objects in the $\infty$-category of $(\infty, 2)$-categories, as well as the Quillen cohomology of an $(\infty, 2)$-category with coefficients in such a parameterized spectrum. More precisely, we construct an analogue of the twisted arrow category for an $(\infty,2)$-category $\mathbb{C}$, which we call its twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category. We then establish an equivalence between parameterized spectrum objects over $\mathbb{C}$, and diagrams of spectra indexed by the twisted 2-cell $\infty$-category of $\mathbb{C}$. Under this equivalence, the Quillen cohomology of $\mathbb{C}$ with values in such a diagram of spectra is identified with the two-fold suspension of its inverse limit spectrum. As an application, we provide an alternative, obstruction-theoretic proof of the fact that adjunctions between $(\infty,1)$-categories are uniquely determined at the level of the homotopy $(3, 2)$-category of $\mathrm{Cat}_{\infty}$.

Integral points on conic log K3 surfaces

Adapting a powerful method of Swinnerton-Dyer, we give explicit sufficient conditions for the existence of integral points on certain schemes which are fibered into affine conics. This includes, in particular, cases where the scheme is geometrically a smooth log K3 surface. To the knowledge of the author, this is the first family of log K3 surfaces for which such conditions are established.

Second descent and rational points on Kummer varieties

A powerful method pioneered by Swinnerton-Dyer allows one to study rational points on pencils of curves of genus 1 by combining the fibration method with a sophisticated form of descent. A variant of this method, first used by Skorobogatov and Swinnerton-Dyer in 2005, can be applied to study rational points on Kummer varieties. In this paper we extend the method to include an additional step of second descent. Assuming finiteness of the relevant Tate-Shafarevich groups, we use the extended method to show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle on Kummer varieties associated to abelian varieties with all rational 2-torsion, under mild additional hypotheses.

Pro-categories in homotopy theory

The goal of this paper is to prove an equivalence between the model categorical approach to pro-categories, as studied by Isaksen, Schlank and the first author, and the $\infty$-categorical approach, as developed by Lurie. Three applications of our main result are described. In the first application we use (a dual version of) our main result to give sufficient conditions on an $ω$-combinatorial model category, which insure that its underlying $\infty$-category is $ω$-presentable. In the second application we consider the pro-category of simplicial étale sheaves and use it to show that the topological realization of any Grothendieck topos coincides with the shape of the hyper-completion of the associated $\infty$-topos. In the third application we show that several model categories arising in profinite homotopy theory are indeed models for the $\infty$-category of profinite spaces. As a byproduct we obtain new Quillen equivalences between these models, and also obtain an example which settles negatively a question raised by Raptis.

Geometry and arithmetic of certain log K3 surfaces

Let $k$ be a field of characteristic $0$. In this paper we describe a classification of smooth log K3 surfaces $X$ over $k$ whose geometric Picard group is trivial and which can be compactified into del Pezzo surfaces. We show that such an $X$ can always be compactified into a del Pezzo surface of degree $5$, with a compactifying divisor $D$ being a cycle of five $(-1)$-curves, and that $X$ is completely determined by the action of the absolute Galois group of $k$ on the dual graph of $D$. When $k=\mathbb{Q}$ and the Galois action is trivial, we prove that for any integral model $\mathcal{X}/\mathbb{Z}$ of $X$, the set of integral points $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{Z})$ is not Zariski dense. We also show that the Brauer-Manin obstruction is not the only obstruction for the integral Hasse principle on such log K3 surfaces, even when their compactification is "split".

On the fibration method for zero-cycles and rational points

Conjectures on the existence of zero-cycles on arbitrary smooth projective varieties over number fields were proposed by Colliot-Thélène, Sansuc, Kato and Saito in the 1980's. We prove that these conjectures are compatible with fibrations, for fibrations into rationally connected varieties over a curve. In particular, they hold for the total space of families of homogeneous spaces of linear groups with connected geometric stabilisers. We prove the analogous result for rational points, conditionally on a conjecture on locally split values of polynomials which a recent work of Matthiesen establishes in the case of linear polynomials over the rationals.

The Grothendieck construction for model categories

The Grothendieck construction is a classical correspondence between diagrams of categories and coCartesian fibrations over the indexing category. In this paper we consider the analogous correspondence in the setting of model categories. As a main result, we establish an equivalence between suitable diagrams of model categories indexed by $\mathcal{M}$ and a new notion of \textbf{model fibrations} over $\mathcal{M}$. When $\mathcal{M}$ is a model category, our construction endows the Grothendieck construction with a model structure which gives a presentation of Lurie's $\infty$-categorical Grothendieck construction and enjoys several good formal properties. We apply our construction to various examples, yielding model structures on strict and weak group actions and on modules over algebra objects in suitable monoidal model categories.

An integral model structure and truncation theory for coherent group actions

In this work we study the homotopy theory of coherent group actions from a global point of view, where we allow both the group and the space acted upon to vary. Using the model of Segal group actions and the model categorical Grothendieck construction we construct a model category encompassing all Segal group actions simultaneously. We then prove a global rectification result in this setting. We proceed to develop a general truncation theory for the model-categorical Grothendieck construction and apply it to the case of Segal group actions. We give a simple characterization of $n$-truncated Segal group actions and show that every Segal group action admits a convergent Postnikov tower.

Hasse principle for generalised Kummer varieties

The existence of rational points on Kummer varieties associated to 2-coverings of abelian varieties over number fields can sometimes be proved through the variation of the Selmer group in the family of quadratic twists of the underlying abelian variety, using an idea of Swinnerton-Dyer. Following Mazur and Rubin, we consider the case when the Galois action on the 2-torsion has a large image. Under mild additional hypotheses we prove the Hasse principle for the associated Kummer varieties assuming the finiteness of relevant Shafarevich-Tate groups.

The Hardy--Littlewood conjecture and rational points

Schinzel's Hypothesis (H) was used by Colliot-Thélène and Sansuc, and later by Serre, Swinnerton-Dyer and others, to prove that the Brauer-Manin obstruction controls the Hasse principle and weak approximation on pencils of conics and similar varieties. We show that when the ground field is Q and the degenerate geometric fibres of the pencil are all defined over Q, one can use these methods to obtain unconditional results by replacing Hypothesis (H) with the finite complexity case of the generalised Hardy-Littlewood conjecture recently established by Green, Tao and Ziegler.

Singular curves and the etale Brauer-Manin obstruction for surfaces

We construct a smooth and projective surface over an arbitrary number field that is a counterexample to the Hasse principle but has the infinite etale Brauer-Manin set. We also construct a surface with a unique rational point and the infinite etale Brauer-Manin set. The key new ingredient is the arithmetic of singular projective curves.

Quasi-unital $\infty$-Categories

Inspired by Lurie's theory of quasi-unital algebras we prove an analogous result for $\infty$-categories. In particular, we show that the unital structure of an $\infty$-category can be uniquely recovered from the underlying non-unital structure once suitable candidates for units have been identified. The main result of this paper can be used to produce a proof for the 1-dimensional cobordism hypothesis, as described in a forthcoming paper.

The Section Conjecture for Graphs and Conical Curves

In this paper we formulate and prove a combinatorial version of the section conjecture for finite groups acting on finite graphs. We apply this result to the study of rational points and show that finite descent is the only obstruction to the Hasse principle for mildly singular curves whose components are all geometrically rational.
