Fractionalized topological insulators from frustrated spin models in three dimensions

We present a theory of three dimensional fractionalized topological insulators in the form of U(1) spin liquids with gapped fermionic spinons in the bulk and topologically protected gapless spinon surface states. Starting from a spin-1/2 model on a pyrochlore lattice, with frustrated antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic exchange interactions, we show that decomposition of the latter interactions, within slave-fermion representation of the spins, can naturally give rise to an emergent spin-orbit coupling for the spinons. This stabilizes a fractionalized topological insulators which also have bulk bond spin-nematic order. Finally, we describe the low energy properties of these states.

Spin-Orbital Locking, Emergent Pseudo-Spin, and Magnetic order in Honeycomb Lattice Iridates

The nature of the effective spin Hamiltonian and magnetic order in the honeycomb iridates is explored by considering a trigonal crystal field effect and spin-orbit coupling. Starting from a Hubbard model, an effective spin Hamiltonian is derived in terms of an emergent pseudo-spin-1/2 moment in the limit of large trigonal distortions and spin-orbit coupling. The present pseudo-spins arise from a spin-orbital locking and are different from the jeff = 1/2 moments that are obtained when the spin-orbit coupling dominates and trigonal distortions are neglected. The resulting spin Hamiltonian is anisotropic and frustrated by further neighbour interactions. Mean field theory suggests a ground state with 4-sublattice zig-zag magnetic order in a parameter regime that can be relevant to the honeycomb iridate compound Na2IrO3, where similar magnetic ground state has recently been observed. Various properties of the phase, the spin-wave spectrum and experimental consequences are discussed. The present approach contrasts with the recent proposals to understand iridate compounds starting from the strong spin-orbit coupling limit and neglecting non-cubic lattice distortions.

Spin wave measurements over the full Brillouin zone of multiferroic BiFeO3

Using inelastic neutron scattering technique, we measured the spin wave dispersion over the entire Brillouin zone of room temperature multiferroic BiFeO3 single crystals with magnetic excitations extending to as high as 72.5 meV. The full spin waves can be explained by a simple Heisenberg Hamiltonian with a nearest neighbor exchange interaction (J=4.38 meV), a next nearest neighbor exchange interaction (J'=0.15 meV), and a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-like term (D=0.107 meV). This simple Hamiltonian determined, for the first time, for BiFeO3 provides a fundamental ingredient for understanding of the novel magnetic properties of BiFeO3.

Topological and magnetic phases of interacting electrons in the pyrochlore iridates

We construct a model for interacting electrons with strong spin orbit coupling in the pyrochlore iridates. We establish the importance of the direct hopping process between the Ir atoms and use the relative strength of the direct and indirect hopping as a generic tuning parameter to study the correlation effects across the iridates family. We predict novel quantum phase transitions between conventional and/or topologically non-trivial phases. At weak coupling, we find topological insulator and metallic phases. As one increases the interaction strength, various magnetic orders emerge. The topological Weyl semi-metal phase is found to be realized in these different orders, one of them being the all-in/all-out pattern. Our findings establish the possible magnetic ground states for the iridates and suggest the generic presence of the Weyl semi-metal phase in correlated magnetic insulators on the pyrochlore lattice. We discus the implications for existing and future experiments.

Interplay between Lattice Distortion and Spin-Orbit Coupling in Double Perovskites

We develop anisotropic pseudo-spin antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models for monoclinically distorted double perovskites. We focus on these A$_2$BB'O$_6$ materials that have magnetic moments on the 4d or 5d transition metal B' ions, which form a face-centered cubic lattice. In these models, we consider local z-axis distortion of B'-O octahedra, affecting relative occupancy of $t_{2g}$ orbitals, along with geometric effects of the monoclinic distortion, and spin-orbit coupling. The resulting pseudo-spin-1/2 models are solved in the saddle-point limit of the Sp(N) generalization of the Heisenberg model. The spin S in the SU(2) case generalizes as a parameter $κ$ controlling quantum fluctuation in the Sp(N) case. We consider two different models that may be appropriate for these systems. In particular, using Heisenberg exchange parameters for La$_2$LiMoO$_6$ from a spin-dimer calculation, we conclude that this pseudo-spin-1/2 system may order, but must be very close to a disordered spin liquid state.

Spin cluster operator theory for the Kagome lattice antiferromagnet

The spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet on the Kagome lattice provides a quintessential example in the strongly correlated electron physics where both effects of geometric frustration and quantum fluctuation are pushed to their limit. Among possible non-magnetic ground states, the valence bond solid (VBS) with a 36-site unit cell is one of the most promising candidates. A natural theoretical framework for the analysis of such VBS order is to consider quantum states on a bond connecting the nearest-neighboring sites as fundamental quantum modes of the system and treat them as effectively independent "bond particles." While correctly describing the VBS order in the ground state, this approach, known as the bond operator theory, significantly overestimates the lowest spin excitation energy. To overcome this problem, we take a next logical step in this paper to improve the bond operator theory and consider extended spin clusters as fundamental building blocks of the system. Depending on two possible configurations of the VBS order, various spin clusters are considered: (i) in the VBS order with staggered hexagonal resonance, we consider one spin cluster for a David star and two spin clusters with each composed of a perfect hexagon and three attached dimers, and (ii) in the VBS order with uniform hexagonal resonance, one spin cluster composed of a David star and three attached dimers. It is shown that the majority of low-energy spin excitations are nearly or perfectly flat in energy. With most of its weight coming from the David star, the lowest spin excitation has a gap much lower than the previous value obtained by the bond operator theory, narrowing the difference against exact diagonalization results.

Ferromagnetically coupled dimers on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice: Application to (CuCl)LaNb2O7

A recent study [Tassel {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 167205 (2010)] has proposed a remarkable spin model for (CuCl)LaNb2O7, in which dimers are ferromagnetically coupled to each other on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this model, the intra-dimer exchange coupling J>0 is antiferromagnetic, while the inter-dimer exchange couplings are ferromagnetic and take different values, J_x,J_y<0, in the two bond directions. Anticipating that the highly frustrated character of this model may lead to a wide range of behaviors in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds, we theoretically investigate the ground state phase diagram of this model in detail using the following three approaches: a strong-coupling expansion for small J_x and J_y, exact diagonalization for finite clusters, and a Schwinger boson mean field theory. When |J_x|, |J_y| <~ J, the system stays in a dimer singlet phase with a finite spin gap. This state is adiabatically connected to the decoupled-dimer limit J_x=J_y=0. We show that the magnetization process of this phase depends crucially on the spatial anisotropy of the inter-dimer couplings. The magnetization shows a jump or a smooth increase for weak and strong anisotropy, respectively, after the spin gap closes at a certain magnetic field. When |J_x| or |J_y| >~ J, quantum phase transitions to various magnetically ordered phases (ferromagnetic, collinear stripe, and spiral) occur. The Schwinger boson analysis demonstrates that quantum fluctuations split the classical degeneracy of different spiral ground states. Implications for (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds are discussed in light of our theoretical results and existing experimental data.

Gauge-field fluctuations in 3D topological Mott insulators

We study the low-energy properties of three-dimensional (3D) topological Mott insulators which can be viewed as strong topological insulators of spinons interacting with a three-dimensional gauge field. The low-energy behavior of such systems is dominated by the two-dimensional (2D) gapless surface spinons coupled to the bulk gauge field. We find that a dimensional crossover from 3D to 2D in the gauge field fluctuations may occur as the systems thickness and/or temperature is varied. In the thin sample limit, the gauge field fluctuations effectively become 2D and the problem becomes analogous to the standard 2D spinon-gauge field theory. In the 3D limit, the bulk gauge field fluctuations lead to a low-energy theory for the coupled system that is more controlled than for the pure 2D case. We discuss various experimental signatures such as the heat capacity scaling as T ln 1/T as well as modified Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida interactions on the surface.

Topological insulators and metal-insulator transition in the pyrochlore iridates

The possible existence of topological insulators in cubic pyrochlore iridates A$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (A = Y or rare-earth elements) is investigated by taking into account the strong spin-orbit coupling and trigonal crystal field effect. It is found that the trigonal crystal field effect, which is always present in real systems, may destabilize the topological insulator proposed for the ideal cubic crystal field, leading to a metallic ground state. Thus the trigonal crystal field is an important control parameter for the metal-insulator changeover. We propose that this could be one of the reasons why distinct low temperature ground states may arise for the pyrochlore iridates with different A-site ions. On the other hand, examining the electron-lattice coupling, we find that softening of the $\textbf{q}$=0 modes corresponding to trigonal or tetragonal distortions of the Ir pyrochlore lattice leads to the resurrection of the strong topological insulator. Thus, in principle, a finite temperature transition to a low-temperature topological insulator can occur via structural changes. We also suggest that the application of the external pressure along [111] or its equivalent directions would be the most efficient way of generating strong topological insulators in pyrochlore iridates.

Nonequilibrium quantum criticality in bilayer itinerant ferromagnets

We present a theory of nonequilibrium quantum criticality in a coupled bilayer system of itinerant electron magnets. The model studied consists of the first layer subjected to an inplane current and open to an external substrate. The second layer is closed and subject to no direct external drive, but couples to the first layer via short-ranged spin exchange interaction. No particle exchange is assumed between the layers. Starting from a microscopic fermionic model, we derive an effective action in terms of two coupled bosonic fields which are related to the magnetization fluctuations of the two layers. When there is no interlayer coupling, the two bosonic modes possess different dynamical critical exponents z with z=2 (z=3) for the first (second) layer. This results in multi-scale quantum criticality in the coupled system. It is shown that the linear coupling between the two fields leads to a low energy fixed point characterized by the larger dynamical critical exponent z=3. The perturbative renormalization group is used to compute the correlation length in the quantum disordered and quantum critical regimes. We also derive the stochastic dynamics obeyed by the critical fluctuations in the quantum critical regime. Comparing the nonequilibrium situation to the thermal equilibrium scenario, where the whole system is at a temperature T, we find that the nonequilibrium drive does not always play the role of temperature.

Spin-orbit coupling in the metallic and spin-liquid phases of Na4Ir3O8

It has recently been proposed that Na4Ir3O8 is a weak Mott insulator at ambient pressure, supporting a three-dimensional spin liquid phase with a spinon Fermi surface. This proposal is consistent with recent experimental findings that the material becomes a metal upon increasing pressure or doping. In this work, we investigate the effect of the spin-orbit coupling arising from 5d Ir moments both in the metallic and spin liquid phases of Na4Ir3O8. The effective Hubbard model in terms of pseudospin j=1/2 Ir states is derived and its consequences to both metallic and spin liquid phases are studied. In particular, the model leads to enhanced Wilson ratio and strong temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient.

Competing quantum paramagnetic ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the star lattice

We investigate various competing paramagnetic ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the two dimensional star lattice which exhibits geometric frustration. Using slave particle mean field theory combined with a projective symmetry group analysis, we examine a variety of candidate spin liquid states on this lattice, including chiral spin liquids, spin liquids with Fermi surfaces of spinons, and nematic spin liquids which break lattice rotational symmetry. Motivated by connection to large-N SU(N) theory as well as numerical exact diagonalization studies, we also examine various valence bond solid (VBS) states on this lattice. Based on a study of energetics using Gutzwiller projected states, we find that a fully gapped spin liquid state is the lowest energy spin liquid candidate for this model. We also find, from a study of energetics using Gutzwiller projected wave functions and bond operator approaches, that this spin liquid is unstable towards two different VBS states -- a VBS state which respects all the Hamitonian symmetries and a VBS state which exhibits $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ order -- depending on the ratio of the Heisenberg exchange couplings on the two inequivalent bonds of the lattice. We compute the triplon dispersion in both VBS states within the bond operator approach and discuss possible implications of our work for future experiments on candidate materials.

Bose-Hubbard model on a star lattice

We analyze the Bose-Hubbard model of hardcore bosons with nearest neighbor hopping and repulsive interactions on a star lattice using both quantum Monte Carlo simulation and dual vortex theory. We obtain the phase diagram of this model as a function of the chemical potential and the relative strength of hopping and interaction. In the strong interaction regime, we find that the Mott phases of the model at 1/2 and 1/3 fillings, in contrast to their counterparts on square, triangular, and Kagome lattices, are either translationally invariant resonant valence bond (RVB) phases with no density-wave order or have coexisting density-wave and RVB orders. We also find that upon increasing the relative strength of hopping and interaction, the translationally invariant Mott states undergo direct second order superfluid-insulator quantum phase transitions. We compute the critical exponents for these transitions and argue using the dual vortex picture that the transitions, when approached through the tip of the Mott lobe, belong to the inverted XY universality class.

Theory of Magnetic Field-Induced Bose-Einstein Condensation of Triplons in Ba3Cr2O8

Motivated by recent experiments on Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_8$, a new spin-dimer compound with spin-1/2 moments of Cr$^{5+}$ ions, we theoretically investigate the field-induced magnetic ordering in this material in view of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of triplet excitations (triplons). We apply the self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Popov (HFP) approach to a microscopic Hamiltonian, using the realistic triplon dispersion measured in an inelastic neutron scattering experiment. In particular, we ask to what extent the BEC of dilute triplons near the critical field can explain the magnetic ordering in this material. For example, we investigate the temperature range where the BEC picture of triplons can be applied via the HFP approach. We also determine the temperature regime where a quadratic approximation of the triplon dispersion works. It is found that the strength of the effective repulsive interaction between triplons is much weaker in Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_8$ than in the canonical spin-dimer compound TlCuCl$_{3}$. Small effective repulsive interaction in combination with the narrow band of triplons leads to higher density of triplons $n_{cr}$ at the critical point. It turns out that the combined effect points to a bigger HFP correction $U n_{cr}$ in Ba$_3$Cr$_2$O$_8$ than in TlCuCl$_{3}$. Nonetheless, the HFP approach provides a reasonable explanation of the transverse magnetization and the specific heat data of Ba$_{3}$Cr$_{2}$O$_8$.

Classification of quantum phases for the star-lattice antiferromagnet via a projective symmetry group analysis

We study possible quantum ground states of the Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the star lattice, which may be realized in the recently discovered polymeric Iron Acetate, Fe$_3$($μ_3$-O)($μ$-OAc)$_6$(H$_2$O)$_3$[Fe$_3$($μ_3$-O)($μ$-OAc)$_{7.5}$]$_2\cdot$ 7H$_2$O. Even though the Fe$^{\rm III}$ moment in this material carries spin-5/2 and the system eventually orders magnetically at low temperatures, the magnetic ordering temperature is much lower than the estimated Curie-Weiss temperature, revealing the frustrated nature of the spin interactions. Anticipating that a lower spin analog of this material may be synthesized in future, we investigate the effect of quantum fluctuations on the star-lattice antiferromagnet using a large-$N$ Sp($N$) mean field theory and a projective symmetry group analysis for possible bosonic quantum spin liquid phases. It is found that there exist only two distinct gapped $Z_2$ spin liquid phases with bosonic spinons for non-vanishing nearest-neighbor valence-bond-amplitudes. In particular, the spin liquid phase which has a lower energy in the nearest-neighbor exchange model can be stabilized for relatively higher spin magnitudes. Hence it is perhaps a better candidate for the realization of quantum spin liquid state. We also determine the magnetic ordering patterns resulting from the condensation of the bosonic spinons in the two different spin liquid phases. We expect these magnetic ordering patterns would directly be relevant for the low temperature ordered phase of the Iron Acetate. The phase diagram containing all of these phases and various dimerized states are obtained for the nearest-neighbor exchange model and its implications are discussed.

Commensurate lock-in and incommensurate supersolid phases of hardcore bosons on anisotropic triangular lattices

We investigate the interplay between commensurate lock-in and incommensurate supersolid phases of the hardcore bosons at half-filling with anisotropic nearest-neighbor hopping and repulsive interactions on triangular lattice. We use numerical quantum and variational Monte Carlo as well as analytical Schwinger boson mean-field analysis to establish the ground states and phase diagram. It is shown that, for finite size systems, there exist a series of jumps between different supersolid phases as the anisotropy parameter is changed. The density ordering wavevectors are locked to commensurate values and jump between adjacent supersolids. In the thermodynamic limit, however, the magnitude of these jumps vanishes leading to a continuous set of novel incommensurate supersoild phases.

Neel and Valence Bond Crystal Order on a Distorted Kagome Lattice: Implications For Zn-Paratacamite

Zn-Paratacamite is a rare spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic insulator with an ideal kagome lattice structure in part of its phase diagram. As a function of Zn doping, this material undergoes a structural distortion which relieves the frustration and introduces magnetic order in the ground state, though the precise nature of the order is not clear at this point. In this paper, we present strong evidence for Neel ordering in the strongly distorted phase of Zn-Paratacamite through the application of quantum Monte-Carlo techniques. These numerical results support a recent Schwinger-boson mean field theory of Zn-Paratacamite. For weak distortion, close to the ideal kagome limit, our results indicate a regime with no Neel order but with a broken glide-plane symmetry. For this model the glide-plane symmetry is broken by any valence bond crystal. Hence, our results lend support to recent proposals of a valence bond crystal ground state for the undistorted lattice. The phase transition between the two phases could be in the deconfined universality class if it is not a first order transition.

Valence Bond Solid Phases on Deformed Kagome Lattices: Application to Rb2Cu3SnF12

Motivated by a recent experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12, where spin-1/2 Cu2+ moments reside on the layers of Kagome-like lattices, we investigate quantum ground states of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a series of deformed Kagome lattices. The deformation is characterized by a weaker exchange coupling (alpha*J) on certain lattice links appropriate for Rb2Cu3SnF12 with alpha=1 corresponding to the ideal Kagome lattice. In particular, we study possible valence bond solid phases using the perturbation theory around isolated dimer limits, dimer series expansion, and self-consistent bond operator mean field theory. It is shown that the valence bond solid phase with a 36-site unit cell of the ideal Kagome lattice is quite sensitive to a small lattice distortion as the kind discovered in Rb2Cu3SnF12. As a result, we find that a more likely quantum ground state in Rb2Cu3SnF12 is the valence bond solid phase with a 12-site unit cell, where six dimers form a pinwheel structure, leading to strong modification of the elementary triplet and singlet excitation spectra in the deformed Kagome lattices.
