Topological and magnetic phases with strong spin-orbit coupling on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the general phase diagram of correlated electrons for iridium-based (Ir) compounds on the hyperhoneycomb lattice---a crystal structure where the Ir$^{4+}$ ions form a three-dimensional network with three-fold coordination recently realized in the $β$-Li${}_{2}$IrO${}_{3}$ compound. Using a combination of microscopic derivations, symmetry analysis, and density functional calculations, we determine the general model for the electrons occupying the $j_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ orbitals at the Ir$^{4+}$ sites. In the non-interacting limit, we find that this model allows for both topological and trivial electronic band insulators along with metallic states. The effect of Hubbard-type electron-electron repulsion on the above electronic structure in stabilizing $\mathbf{q}=\mathbf{0}$ magnetic order reveals a phase diagram with continuous phase transition between a topological band insulator and a Neel ordered magnetic insulator.

Heisenberg-Kitaev model on hyperhoneycomb lattice

Motivated by recent experiments on $β-$Li$_2$IrO$_3$, we study the phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a three dimensional lattice of tri-coordinated Ir$^{4+}$, dubbed the hyperhoneycomb lattice by Takagi et. al. The lattice geometry of this material, along with Ir$^{4+}$ ions carrying $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ moments, suggests that the Heisenberg-Kitaev model may effectively capture the low energy spin-physics of the system in the strong-coupling limit. Using a combination of semiclassical analysis, exact solution and slave-fermion mean field theory, we find, in addition to the spin-liquid, four different magnetically ordered phases depending on the parameter regime. All four magnetic phases--the Néel, the polarized ferromagnet, the skew-stripy and the skew-zig-zag, have collinear spin ordering. The three dimensional Z$_2$ spin liquid, which extends over an extended parameter regime around the exactly solvable Kitaev point, has a gapless Majorana mode with a deformed Fermi-circle (co-dimensions, $d_c=2$). We discuss the effect of the magnetic field and finite temperature on different phases that may be relevant for future experiments.

Quantum spin liquids in the absence of spin-rotation symmetry: application to Herbertsmithite

It has been suggested that the nearest-neighbour (NN) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg (HAF) model on the Kagome lattice may be a good starting point to understand the quantum spin-liquid (QSL) behaviour discovered in Herbertsmithite. We investigate possible QSL phases in the presence of experimentally relevant spin-rotation symmetry-breaking perturbations such as Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and Ising interactions, as well as second-neighbour antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions. We use the projective symmetry group analysis within the slave-fermion framework of QSL phases and systematically classify possible QSLs in the presence of these perturbations. The dynamical spin-structure factor for relevant QSLs is computed and their effects are studied. Our calculations reveal dispersive features in the spin structure factor embedded in a generally diffuse background due to the existence of fractionalized S=1/2 excitations called spinons. For two of the previously proposed $Z_2$ states, the dispersive features are almost absent, and diffuse scattering dominates over a large energy window throughout the Brillouin zone. This resembles the structure factor observed in recent inelastic neutron scattering experiments on singlet crystals of Herbertsmithite. Furthermore, one of the $Z_2$ states with the spin structure factor with mostly diffuse scattering is gapped, and it may be adiabatically connected to the gapped QSL state observed in recent DMRG calculations for the NN HAF. The above perturbations are found to enhance the diffuse nature of the spin structure factor and reduce the momentum dependencies of the spin gap. We also calculate the electron spin resonance absorption spectra that further characterize the role of spin-rotation symmetry breaking perturbations, and can shed more light into the nature of the ground state in Herbertsmithite.

Order-by-disorder and magnetic field response in Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the finite temperature phase diagram of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model on a three dimensional hyperhoneycomb lattice. Using semiclassical analysis and classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we investigate quantum and thermal order-by-disorder, as well as the magnetic ordering temperature. We find the parameter regime where quantum and thermal fluctuations favor different magnetic orders, which leads to an additional finite temperature phase transition within the ordered phase. This transition, however, occurs at a relatively low temperature and the entropic effects may dominate most of the finite temperature region below the ordering temperature. In addition, we explore the magnetization process in the presence of a magnetic field and discover spin-flop transitions which are sensitive to the applied-field direction. We discuss implications of our results for future experiments on a hyperhoneycomb lattice system such as the recently discovered β-Li2IrO3.

Three-dimensional nematic spin liquid in the stacked triangular lattice 6H-B structure

Recently, a number of experiments indicate the possible presence of spin liquid phases in quantum magnets with spin-1/2 and spin-1 moments sitting on triangular-lattice-based structures in Ba3CuSb2O9 and Ba3NiSb2O9 respectively. In relation to these experiments, several theoretical proposals have been made for spin liquid phases and spin-liquid-like behaviours on the stacked triangular lattice. While the crystal structures of these materials are currently under debate, it is nonetheless interesting to understand possible spin liquid phases on such frustrated lattices. In this work, we apply Schwinger boson mean-field theory and projective symmetry group (PSG) analysis to investigate spin liquid phases on the fully three-dimensional 6H-B structure, in contrast to previous works that considered two-dimensional systems. We find that a nematic Z2 spin liquid phase, where the lattice-rotational symmetry is spontaneously broken, is the most promising spin liquid phase that is consistent with spiral magnetic ordering in the classical limit. We discuss the implications of our results to future theoretical and experimental works.

RKKY interactions and anomalous Hall effect in metallic rare-earth pyrochlores

Motivated by experiments on Pr2Ir2O7, we consider metallic pyrochlore systems A2B2O7, where the A-sites are occupied by rare-earth local moments and the B-sites host 5d transition metal ions with itinerant strongly spin-orbit coupled electrons. Assuming non-Kramers doublets on the A-site, we derive the RKKY interaction between them mediated by the B-site itinerant electrons and find extended non-Heisenberg interactions. Analyzing a simplified model of the RKKY interaction, we uncover a local moment phase with coexisting spiral Ising-like magnetic dipolar and XY-like quadrupolar ordering. This state breaks time-reversal and lattice symmetries, and reconstructs the B-site electronic band structure, producing a Weyl Metallic phase with an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect and an undetectably small magnetization. We discuss implications of our results for Pr2Ir2O7.

Changing topology by topological defects in three-dimensional topologically ordered phases

A hallmark feature of topologically ordered states of matter is the dependence of ground state degeneracy (GSD) on the topology of the manifold determined by the global shape of the system. Although the topology of a physical system is practically hard to manipulate, recently it was shown that in certain topologically ordered phases, topological defects can introduce extra topological GSD. Here the topological defects can be viewed as effectively changing the topology of the physical system. Previous studies have been focusing on two spatial dimensions with point-like topological defects. In three dimensions, line-like topological defects can appear. They are closed loops in the bulk that can be linked and knotted, effectively leading to complex three dimensional manifolds in certain topologically ordered states. This paper studies the properties of such line-defects in a particular context: the lattice dislocations. We give an analytical construction, together with support from exact numerical calculations, for the dependence of the GSD on dislocations of certain doubled versions of the exactly solvable Kitaev's toric code models in both two and three dimensions. We find that the GSD of the 3d model depends only on the total number of dislocation loops, no matter how they are linked or knotted. The results are extended to Z_n generalizations of the model. Additionally, we consider the phases in which the crystalline orders are destroyed through proliferation of double dislocations. The resulting phases are shown to host topological orders described by non-Abelian gauge theories.

Anomalous enhancement of Wilson ratio in a quantum spin liquid with strong spin-orbital entanglement: the case of Na4Ir3O8

We present a theory for the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the quantum-spin-liquid candidate material Na4Ir3O8. We consider an extended Hubbard model on the hyperkagome lattice, which incorporates atomic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and multi-orbital interactions of iridium 5d electrons. This model is analyzed using the slave-rotor mean-field theory and thermodynamic properties across the MIT are studied. The ground state in the insulating side is a U(1) quantum spin liquid with spinon Fermi surfaces that consist of multiple particle-like and hole-like pockets. It is shown that the Wilson ratio in the quantum spin liquid phase is highly enhanced compared to the metallic state. This originates from the fact that the magnetic susceptibility in the quantum spin liquid phase acquires multiple enhancements due to the strong SOC, reduced band-width and on-site spin-orbital exchange, while the heat capacity does not change much across MIT. This explains the large Wilson ratio of the insulating phase observed in the previous experiment on Na4Ir3O8. Possible connections to other existing and future experiments, in particular on the metallic phase, are discussed.

Spin-orbital liquids in non-Kramers magnet on Kagome lattice

Localized magnetic moments with crystal-field doublet or pseudo-spin 1/2 may arise in correlated insulators with even number of electrons and strong spin-orbit coupling. Such a non-Kramers pseudo-spin 1/2 is the consequence of crystalline symmetries as opposed to the Kramers doublet arising from time-reversal invariance, and is necessarily a composite of spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We investigate possible spin-orbital liquids with fermionic spinons for such non-Kramers pseudo-spin 1/2 systems on the Kagome lattice. Using the projective symmetry group analysis, we find {\it ten} new phases that are not allowed in the corresponding Kramers systems. These new phases are allowed due to unusual action of the time reversal operation on non-Kramers pseudo-spins. We compute the spin-spin dynamic structure factor that shows characteristic features of these non-Kramers spin-orbital liquids arising from their unusual coupling to neutrons, which is therefore relevant for neutron scattering experiments. We also point out possible anomalous broadening of Raman scattering intensity that may serve as a signature experimental feature for gapless non-Kramers spin-orbital liquids.

Pyrochlore electrons under pressure, heat and field: shedding light on the iridates

We study the finite temperature and magnetic field phase diagram of electrons on the pyrochlore lattice subject to a local repulsion as a model for the pyrochlore iridates. We provide the most general symmetry-allowed Hamiltonian, including next-nearest neighbour hopping, and relate it to a Slater-Koster based Hamiltonian for the iridates. It captures Lifshitz and/or thermal transitions between several phases such as metals, semimetals, topological insulators and Weyl semimetals, and gapped antiferromagnets with different orders. Our results on the charge conductivity, both DC and optical, Hall coefficient, magnetization and susceptibility show good agreement with recent experiments and provide new predictions. As such, our effective model sheds light on the pyrochlore iridates in a unified way.

Quantum Phase Transition in Heisenberg-Kitaev Model

We explore the nature of the quantum phase transition between a magnetically ordered state with collinear spin pattern and a gapless $Z_2$ spin liquid in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model. We construct a slave particle mean field theory for the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in terms of complex fermionic spinons. It is shown that this theory, formulated in the appropriate basis, is capable of describing the Kitaev spin liquid as well as the transition between the gapless $Z_2$ spin liquid and the so-called stripy antiferromagnet. In particular, within a mean field theory, we have a discontinuous transition from the $Z_2$ spin liquid to the stripy antiferromagnet. We argue, however, that subtle spinon confinement effects, associated with the instability of gapped U(1) spin liquid in two spatial dimensions, are playing an important role at the transition. The possibility of an exotic continuous transition is briefly addressed.

Entanglement entropy between two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids

We consider a system of two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLL) on parallel chains and study the Renyi entanglement entropy $S_n$ between the two chains. Here the entanglement cut is introduced between the chains, not along the perpendicular direction as used in previous studies of one-dimensional systems. The limit $n\to1$ corresponds to the von Neumann entanglement entropy. The system is effectively described by two-component bosonic field theory with different TLL parameters in the symmetric/antisymmetric channels as far as the coupled system remains in a gapless phase. We argue that in this system, $S_n$ is a linear function of the length of the chains (boundary law) followed by a universal subleading constant $γ_n$ determined by the ratio of the two TLL parameters. The formulae of $γ_n$ for integer $n\ge 2$ are derived using (a) ground-state wave functionals of TLLs and (b) boundary conformal field theory, which lead to the same result. These predictions are checked in a numerical diagonalization analysis of a hard-core bosonic model on a ladder. Although the analytic continuation of $γ_n$ to $n\to 1$ turns out to be a difficult problem, our numerical result suggests that the subleading constant in the von Neumann entropy is also universal. Our results may provide useful characterization of inherently anisotropic quantum phases such as the sliding Luttinger liquid phase via qualitatively different behaviors of the entanglement entropy with the entanglement partitions along different directions.

Universal transport near a quantum critical Mott transition in two dimensions

We discuss the universal transport signatures near a zero-temperature continuous Mott transition between a Fermi liquid (FL) and a quantum spin liquid in two spatial dimensions. The correlation-driven transition occurs at fixed filling and involves fractionalization of the electron: upon entering the spin liquid, a Fermi surface of neutral spinons coupled to an internal gauge field emerges. We present a controlled calculation of the value of the zero temperature universal resistivity jump predicted to occur at the transition. More generally, the behavior of the universal scaling function that collapses the temperature and pressure dependent resistivity is derived, and is shown to bear a strong imprint of the emergent gauge fluctuations. We further predict a universal jump of the thermal conductivity across the Mott transition, which derives from the breaking of conformal invariance by the damped gauge field, and leads to a violation of the Wiedemann-Franz law in the quantum critical region. A connection to organic salts is made, where such a transition might occur. Finally, we present some transport results for the pure rotor O(N) CFT.

Non-Fermi liquid and topological states with strong spin-orbit coupling

We argue that a class of strongly spin-orbit coupled materials, including some pyrochlore iridates and the inverted band gap semiconductor HgTe, may be described by a minimal model consisting of the Luttinger Hamiltonian supplemented by Coulomb interactions, a problem studied by Abrikosov and collaborators. It contains two-fold degenerate conduction and valence bands touching quadratically at the zone center. Using modern renormalization group methods, we update and extend Abrikosov's classic work and show that interactions induce a quantum critical non-Fermi liquid phase, stable provided time-reversal and cubic symmetries are maintained. We determine the universal power-law exponents describing various observables in this "Luttinger Abrikosov Beneslavskii" state, which include conductivity, specific heat,non-linear susceptibility and magnetic Gruneisen number. Furthermore, we determine the phase diagram in the presence of cubic and/or time-reversal symmetry breaking perturbations, which includes topological insulator and Weyl semi-metal phases. Many of these phases possess an extraordinarily large anomalous Hall effect, with the Hall conductivity scaling sub-linearly with magnetization.

Magnetic excitation spectra in pyrochlore iridates

Metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore iridates (A2Ir2O7) are believed to occur due to subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration, and electron interactions. In particular, the nature of magnetic ordering of iridium ions in the insulating phase is crucial for understanding of several exotic phases recently proposed for these materials. We study the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the intermediate-coupling regime for the so-called all-in/all-out magnetic state in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic A-site ions (A=Eu,Y), which is found to be preferred in previous theoretical studies. We find that the effect of charge fluctuations on the spin-waves in this regime leads to strong departure from the lowest-order spin-wave calculations based on models obtained in strong-coupling calculations. We discuss the characteristic features of the magnetic excitation spectrum that can lead to conclusive identification of the magnetic order in future resonant inelastic x-ray (or neutron) scattering experiments. Knowledge of the nature of magnetic order and its low-energy features may also provide useful information on the accompanying metal-insulator transition.

Correlation effects on 3D topological phases: from bulk to boundary

Topological phases of quantum matter defy characterization by conventional order parameters but can exhibit quantized electro-magnetic response and/or protected surface states. We examine such phenomena in a model for three-dimensional correlated complex oxides, the pyrochlore iridates. The model realizes interacting topological insulators with and without time-reversal symmetry, and topological Weyl semimetals. We use cellular dynamical mean field theory, a method that incorporates quantum-many-body effects and allows us to evaluate the magneto-electric topological response coefficient in correlated systems. This invariant is used to unravel the presence of an interacting axion insulator absent within a simple mean field study. We corroborate our bulk results by studying the evolution of the topological boundary states in the presence of interactions. Consequences for experiments and for the search for correlated materials with symmetry-protected topological order are given.

Dyon condensation in topological Mott insulators

We consider quantum phase transitions out of topological Mott insulators in which the ground state of the fractionalized excitations (fermionic spinons) is topologically non-trivial. The spinons in topological Mott insulators are coupled to an emergent compact U(1) gauge field with a so-called "axion" term. We study the confinement transitions from the topological Mott insulator to broken symmetry phases, which may occur via the condensation of dyons. Dyons carry both "electric" and "magnetic" charges, and arise naturally in this system because the monopoles of the emergent U(1) gauge theory acquires gauge charge due to the axion term. It is shown that the dyon condensate, in general, induces simultaneous current and bond orders. To demonstrate this, we study the confined phase of the topological Mott insulator on the cubic lattice. When the magnetic transition is driven by dyon condensation, we identify the bond order as valence bond solid order and the current order as scalar spin chirality order. Hence, the confined phase of the topological Mott insulator is an exotic phase where the scalar spin chirality and the valence bond order coexist and appear via a single transition. We discuss implications of our results for generic models of topological Mott insulators.

Influence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions on magnetic structure of a spin-1/2 deformed kagome lattice antiferromagnet

Motivated by the recent neutron scattering experiment on Rb2Cu3SnF12 [Nat. Phys. 6, 865 (2010)], we investigate the effect of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a theoretical model for the magnetic structure of this material. Considering the valence bond solid ground state, which has a 12-site unit cell, we develop the bond operator mean-field theory. It is shown that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions significantly modify the triplon dispersions around the Gamma point and cause a shift of the spin gap (the minimum triplon gap) position from the K to Gamma point in the first Brilloin zone. The spin gap is also evaluated in exact diagonalization studies on a 24-site cluster. We discuss a magnetic transition induced by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in the bond operator framework. Moreover, the magnetization process under external magnetic fields is studied within the exact diagonalization and strong coupling expansion approaches. We find that the results of all above approaches are consistent with the experimental findings.
