Quantum impurity model for two-stage multipolar ordering and Fermi surface reconstruction

Classification and understanding of quantum phase transitions and critical phenomena in itinerant electron systems are outstanding questions in quantum materials research. Recent experiments on heavy fermion systems with higher-rank multipolar local moments provide a new platform to study such questions. In particular, experiments on $\text{Ce}_{3}\text{Pd}_{20}\text{(Si,Ge)}_{6}$ show novel quantum critical behaviors via two consecutive magnetic field-driven quantum phase transitions. At each transition, the derivative of the Hall resistivity jumps discontinuously, which was attributed to sequential Fermi surface reconstructions. Motivated by this discovery, we consider an effective quantum impurity model of itinerant electrons coupled to local dipolar, quadrupolar, and octupolar moments arising from $\text{Ce}^{3+}$ ions. Using renormalization group analyses, we demonstrate that two-stage multipolar ordering and Fermi surface reconstruction arise depending on which multipolar moments participate in the Fermi surface and which other moments are decoupled via Kondo destruction.

Collective magnetic Higgs excitation in a pyrochlore ruthenate

The emergence of scalar Higgs-type amplitude modes in systems where symmetry is spontaneously broken has been a highly successful, paradigmatic description of phase transitions, with implications ranging from high-energy particle physics to low-energy condensed matter systems. Here, we uncover two successive high temperature phase transitions in the pyrochlore magnet Nd$_2$Ru$_2$O$_7$ at $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 147$ K and $T^* = 97$ K, that lead to giant phonon instabilities and culminate in the emergence of a highly coherent excitation. This coherent excitation, distinct from other phonons and from conventional magnetic modes, stabilizes at a low energy of 3 meV. We assign it to a collective Higgs-type amplitude mode, that involves bond energy modulations of the Ru$_4$ tetrahedra. Its striking two-fold symmetry, incompatible with the underlying crystal structure, highlights the possibility of multiple entangled broken symmetries.

Complex fixed points of the non-Hermitian Kondo model in a Luttinger liquid

Non-Hermitian physics in open quantum many-body systems provides novel opportunities for the discovery of exotic quantum phenomena unexpected in Hermitian systems. A previous study of the non-Hermitian Kondo problem in ultracold atoms reports reversion of renormalization group flows which violates the $g$ theorem and produces an unusual quantum phase transition. In this work, we study the effect of electron-electron interactions by considering the non-Hermitian Kondo problem in a Luttinger liquid. By performing a perturbative renormalization group analysis to two-loop order, we find that the interplay between non-Hermitian Kondo couplings and electron-electron interactions can produce a pair of complex fixed points. Complex fixed points have often been discussed in an attempt to understand the extremely long correlation length of Hermitian systems with weakly first-order transitions. Here, we show that complex fixed points arise naturally and can be physically realized in open quantum systems. We discuss consequences of the complex fixed points and future directions.

Origin of $π$-shifted three-dimensional charge density waves in kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$

Understanding the nature of charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity in kagome metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=Cs,Rb,K) is a recent subject of intensive study. Due to the presence of van Hove singularities, electron-electron interaction has been suggested to play an important role in the formation of such broken symmetry states. Recent experiments show that the CDW order is three-dimensional and it is staggered across different kagome layers. However, the experimental interpretation for the precise structure of CDW varies in terms of whether it is the star of David (SD), inverse star of David (ISD) or the alternation of the two among neighboring layers. In this work, we show that the origin of these distinct CDW orders can be understood in a unified picture by considering intra- and inter-layer electron-electron interactions as well as the coupling between electrons and lattice distortions. Utilizing an effective 9-band model with V $d$ orbitals and out-of-plane Sb $p$ orbitals, it is demonstrated that the repulsive electron-electron interaction favors charge bond order which induces either SD or ISD upon including lattice distortions. As the inter-layer interaction is introduced, $π$-shifted CDW develops with the staggered ordering along the $c$-axis. We also find that the phase with alternating SD and ISD can be stabilized as the ground state under strong inter-layer interaction.

Symmetry fractionalization in the gauge mean-field theory of quantum spin ice

Symmetry fractionalization is a ubiquitous feature of topologically ordered states that can be used to classify different symmetry-enriched topological phases and reveal some of their unique experimental signatures. Despite its vast popularity, there is currently no available framework to study symmetry fractionalization of quantum spin ice (QSI) -- a $U(1)$ quantum spin liquid (QSL) on the pyrochlore lattice supporting emergent photons -- within the most widely used theoretical framework to describe it, gauge mean-field theory (GMFT). In this work, we provide an extension of GMFT that allows for the classification of space-time symmetry fractionalization. The construction classifies all GMFT Ansätze that yield physical wavefunctions invariant under given symmetries and a specific low-energy gauge structure. As an application of the framework, we first show that the only two Ansätze with emergent $U(1)$ gauge fields that respect all space-group symmetries are the well-known 0- and $π$-flux states. We then showcase how the framework may describe QSLs beyond the currently known ones by classifying chiral $U(1)$ QSI. We find two new states described by $π/2$- and $3π/2$-fluxes of the emergent gauge field threading the hexagonal plaquettes of the pyrochlore lattice. We finally discuss how the different ways translation symmetries fractionalize for all these states lead to unique experimentally relevant signatures and compute their respective inelastic neutron scattering cross-section to illustrate the argument.

Pairing Instabilities of the Yukawa-SYK Models with Controlled Fermion Incoherence

The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow a continuous distribution rather than being fixed to a constant. By tuning the analytic behaviour of the distribution, we could control the fermion incoherence to systematically examine various normal states ranging from the Fermi liquid to non-Fermi liquids that are different from the conformal solution of the SYK model with a constant variance. Using the linearised Eliashberg theory, we show that the onset of the unconventional spin-triplet pairing is preferred with the spin-dependent interactions while all pairing channels show instabilities with the spin-independent interactions. Although the interactions shorten the lifetime of the fermions in the non-Fermi liquid, the same interactions also dress the bosons to strengthen the tendency to pair the incoherent fermions. As a consequence, the onset temperature $T_c$ of the pairing is enhanced in the non-Fermi liquid compared to the case of the Fermi liquid.

Topological magnons for thermal Hall transport in frustrated magnets with bond-dependent interactions

Thermal transport in topologically-ordered phases of matter provides valuable insights as it can detect the charge-neutral quasiparticles that would not directly couple to electromagnetic probes. An important example is edge heat transport of Majorana fermions in a chiral spin liquid, which leads to a half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity. This signature is precisely what has recently been measured in $α$-RuCl$_3$ under external magnetic fields. The plateau-like behavior of the half-quantized thermal Hall conductivity as a function of external magnetic field, and the peculiar sign change depending on the magnetic field orientation, has been proposed as strong evidence for the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid. Alternatively, for in-plane magnetic fields, it was theoretically shown that such a sign structure can also arise from topological magnons in the field-polarized state. In this work, we investigate the full implications of topological magnons as heat carriers on thermal transport measurements. We first prove analytically that for any commensurate order with a finite magnetic unit cell, reversing the field direction leads to a sign change in the magnon thermal Hall conductivity in two-dimensional systems. We verify this proof numerically with nontrivial magnetic orders as well as the field-polarized state in Kitaev magnets subjected to an in-plane field. In the case of a tilted magnetic field, whereby there exist both finite in-plane and out-of-plane field components, we find that the plateau-like behavior of the thermal Hall conductivity and the sign change upon reversing the in-plane component of the magnetic field arise in the partially-polarized state, as long as the in-plane field contribution to the Zeeman energy is significant. While these results are consistent with the experimental observations, we comment on other aspects requiring investigation in future studies.

Uncovering footprints of dipolar-octupolar quantum spin ice from neutron scattering signatures

Recent experiments on Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ suggest that this material may host a novel form of quantum spin ice, a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid with an emergent photon. The Ce$^{3+}$ local moments on the pyrochlore lattice are described by pseudospin 1/2 degrees of freedom, whose components transform as dipolar and octupolar moments under symmetry operations. In principle, there exist four possible quantum spin ice regimes, depending on whether the Ising component is in the dipolar/octupolar channel, and two possible flux configurations of the emergent gauge field. In this work, using exact diagonalization and molecular dynamics, we investigate the equal-time and dynamical spin structure factors in all four quantum spin ice regimes using quantum and classical computations. Contrasting the distinct signatures of quantum and classical results for the four possible quantum spin ice regimes and elucidating the role of quantum fluctuations, we show that the quantum structure factor computed for the $π$-flux octupolar quantum spin ice regime is most compatible with the neutron scattering results on Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior and quantum criticality in cubic heavy fermion systems with non-Kramers multipolar local moments

Notable non-Fermi liquid and quantum critical behaviors are observed in rare-earth metallic systems with non-Kramers local moments supporting a number of different multipolar moments. A prominent example is $\text{Pr(Ti,V)}_{2}\text{Al}_{20}$, where the non-Kramers doublet of the $\text{Pr}^{3+}$ ion allows quadrupolar and octupolar moments, but lacks a dipolar moment. Previous theoretical studies show that a single impurity Kondo problem with such an unusual local moment leads to novel non-Fermi liquid states. In this work, we investigate possible quantum critical behaviors arising from the competition between non-Fermi liquid states and multipolar-ordered phases induced by the RKKY interaction. We consider a local version of the corresponding Kondo lattice model, namely the Bose-Fermi Kondo model. Here, the multipolar local moments are coupled to fermionic and bosonic bath degrees of freedom representing the multipolar Kondo effect and RKKY interactions. Using a perturbative renormalization group (RG) study up to two loop order, we find critical points between non-Fermi liquid Kondo fixed points and a quadrupolar ordered fixed point. The critical points describe quantum critical behaviors at the corresponding phase transitions and can be distinguished by higher order corrections in the octupolar susceptibility that can be measured by ultrasound experiments. Our results imply the existence of a rich expansion of the phases and quantum critical behaviors in multipolar heavy fermion systems.

Green's Function Approach to Interacting Higher-order Topological Insulators

The Bloch wave functions have been playing a crucial role in the diagnosis of topological phases in non-interacting systems. However, the Bloch waves are no longer applicable in the presence of finite Coulomb interaction and alternative approaches are needed to identify the topological indices. In this paper, we focus on three-dimensional higher-order topological insulators protected by $C_4T$ symmetry and show that the topological index can be computed through eigenstates of inverse Green's function at zero frequency. If there is an additional $S_4$ rotoinversion symmetry, the topological index $P_3$ can be determined by eigenvalues of $S_4$ at high symmetry momenta, similar to the Fu-Kane parity criterion. We verify this method using many-body exact diagonalization in higher-order topological insulators with interaction. We also discuss the realization of this higher-order topological phase in tetragonal lattice structure with $C_4T$-preserving magnetic order. Finally, we discuss the boundary conditions necessary for the hinge states to emerge and show that these hinge states exist even when the boundary is smooth and without a sharp hinge.

Intertwining orbital current order and superconductivity in Kagome metal

The nature of superconductivity in newly discovered Kagome materials, $\text{AV}_3\text{Sb}_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs), has been a subject of intense debate. Recent experiments suggest the presence of orbital current order on top of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity. Since the orbital current order breaks time-reversal symmetry, it may fundamentally affect possible superconducting states. In this work, we investigate the mutual influence between the orbital current order and superconductivity in Kagome metal with characteristic van Hove singularity (vHS). By explicitly deriving the Landau-Ginzburg theory, we classify possible orbital current order and superconductivity. It turns out that distinct unconventional superconductivities are expected, depending on the orbital current ordering types. Thus, this information can be used to infer the superconducting order parameter when the orbital current order is identified and vice versa. We also discuss possible experiments that may distinguish such superconducting states coexisting with the orbital current order.

Ultrasound detection of emergent photons in generic quantum spin ice

Experimental identification of quantum spin ice (QSI), a U(1) quantum spin liquid on the pyrochlore lattice hosting emergent photons, is a major challenge in frustrated magnets. In this work, we propose ultrasound measurements as a novel tool for probing the emergent photons of various QSI phases. Our analysis includes QSI phases in non-Kramers doublet compounds such as $\rm{Pr}_2 \rm{Zr}_2 \rm{O}_7$ as well as dipolar-octupolar Kramers doublet compounds such as $\rm{Ce}_2 \rm{Zr}_2 \rm{O}_7$. The latter may host emergent photons associated with an octupolar component which renders them difficult to detect with inelastic neutron scattering. We demonstrate theoretically how the speed of the emergent photons can be obtained from the renormalization of the phonon spectrum and show that ultrasound measurements provide a means of distinguishing the dipolar from the octupolar QSI phase in dipolar-octupolar materials.

Non-Fermi liquid induced by Bose metal with protected subsystem symmetries

Understanding non-Fermi liquids in dimensions higher than one, has been a subject of great interest. Such phases may serve as parent states for other unconventional phases of quantum matter, in a similar manner that conventional broken symmetry states can be understood as instabilities of the Fermi liquid. In this work, we investigate the emergence of a novel non-Fermi liquid in two dimensions, where the fermions with quadratic band-touching dispersion interact with the Bose metal. The bosonic excitations in the Bose metal possess an extended nodal-line spectrum in momentum space, which arises due to the subsystem symmetry or the restricted motion of bosons. Using renormalization group analysis and direct computations, we show that the extended infrared (IR) singularity of the Bose metal leads to a line of interacting fixed points of novel non-Fermi liquids, where the anomalous dimension of the fermions varies continuously, akin to the Luttinger liquid in one dimension. Further, the generalization of the model with multiple low-energy excitations is used to explore other unusual features of the resulting ground state.

Competing quantum spin liquids, gauge fluctuations, and anisotropic interactions in a breathing pyrochlore lattice

We use the projective symmetry group analysis to classify the quantum spin liquids on the $S=1/2$ pyrochlore magnet with a breathing anisotropy. We find 40 $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids and 16 $U(1)$ spin liquids that respect the $F\bar{4}3m$ space group and the time reversal symmetry. As an application, we consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model, which is proposed to be the dominant interaction in the candidate material Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$. Focusing on the $U(1)$ spin liquid ansatze, we find that only two of them are physical when restricted to this model. We present an analytical solution to the parton mean field theory for each of these two $U(1)$ spin liquids. It is revealed that one of them has gapless, while the other one has gapped, spinon excitations. The two $U(1)$ spin liquids are equal in energy regardless of the degree of breathing anisotropy, and they can be differentiated by the low-temperature heat capacity contribution from the quadratically-dispersing gapless spinons. We further show that the latter is unaffected by fluctuations of the $U(1)$ gauge field within the random phase approximation. Finally, we demonstrate that a small Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction lifts the degeneracy between the two $U(1)$ spin liquids, and it eventually causes the lattice to decouple into independent tetrahedra at strong coupling. While current model parameters for Ba$_3$Yb$_2$Zn$_5$O$_{11}$ place it indeed in the decoupled regime, other candidate materials may be synthesised in the near future that realize the spin liquid states discussed in our work.

Realization of fractonic quantum phases in the breathing pyrochlore lattice

Fractonic phases of matter are novel quantum ground states supporting sub-dimensional emergent excitations with mobility restrictions. Due to a sub-extensive ground state degeneracy that is dependent on the geometry of the underlying lattice, fractonic phases are considered as models for quantum memory or quantum glass. While there exist a number of exactly solvable models with interactions between multiple particles/spins, the realization of such models in real materials is extremely challenging. In this work, we provide a realistic quantum model of quadratic spin interactions on the breathing pyrochlore lattice of existing materials. We show that the emergent "cluster charge" excitations arise as vacuum fluctuations residing on the boundary of membrane objects, and move in a sub-dimensional space. Using the membrane operators, we demonstrate the existence of a sub-extensive ground state degeneracy explicitly depending on the lattice geometry, which is a useful resource for novel quantum memory.

Magnetic-field Induced Topological Transitions and Thermal Conductivity in a Generalized Kitaev Model

Recent experiments on Kitaev spin liquid candidate materials reported non-monotonic behavior of thermal conductivity as a function of magnetic field, which lead to conflicting interpretations of its origin. Motivated by this development, we study the magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity of a generalized Kitaev model, which allows the phase transitions between different flux sectors as a function of the magnetic field. The thermal conductivity due to Majorana fermions shows dip-bump structures as the magnetic field increases, which is caused by either the transitions between different flux sectors of Kitaev spin liquids or the topological transitions that change the Majorana Chern number within the same flux sector. It is shown that the change of Chern number is closely related to the four-Majorana-fermion interaction induced by the magnetic field. The non-monotonic behavior in thermal conductivity emerges at finite temperature, and it becomes weaker when temperature decreases towards zero. Our model provides a generic mechanism for the Kitaev spin liquids to develop non-monotonic magnetic-field dependence of thermal conductivity while the detailed comparison to realistic materials remains an open question for future investigation.

Geometrical frustration versus Kitaev interactions in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

Recently, Co-based honeycomb magnets have been proposed as promising candidate materials to host the Kitaev spin liquid state. One of the front-runners is BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$ (BCAO), where it was suggested that the exchange processes between Co$^{2+}$ ions via the surrounding edge-sharing oxygen octahedra could give rise to bond-dependent Kitaev interactions. In this work, we present and analyze comprehensive inelastic neutron scattering studies of BCAO with fields in the honeycomb plane. Combining the constraints from the magnon excitations in the high-field polarized state and the inelastic spin structure factor measured in zero magnetic field, we examine two leading theoretical models: the Kitaev-type \JKG model and the \XXZ model. We show that the existing experimental data can be consistently accounted for by the \XXZ model but not by the \JKG model, and we discuss the implications of these results for the realization of a spin liquid phase in BCAO and more generally for the realization of the Kitaev model in cobaltates.

Crucial role of out-of-plane Sb-$p$ orbitals in Van Hove singularity formation and electronic correlation for superconducting Kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

First-principles density functional theory calculations are performed to understand the electronic structure and interaction parameters for recently discovered superconducting Kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. A systematic analysis of the tight-binding parameters based on maximally localized Wannier function method demonstrates that the out-of-plane Sb$^{\rm out}$-$p$ orbital is a key element in complete description of the three Van Hove singularity structures known in this material at $M$ point near the Fermi level. Further, the correlation strengths are also largely determined by Sb$^{\rm out}$-$p$ states. Based on constrained random phase approximation, we find that on-site and inter-site interaction parameter are both significantly affected by the screening effect of Sb$^{\rm out}$-$p$ orbitals. As the role of this previously unnoticed orbital state can be tuned or controlled by out-of-plane lattice parameters, we examine the electronic structure and particularly the evolution of Van Hove singularity points as a function of strain and pressure, which can serve as useful knobs to control the material properties.
