Nonlinear optical responses in nodal line semimetals

Shift current and second harmonic generation (SHG) are nonlinear optical responses that are often used for photovoltaic effect and the detection of subtle symmetry breaking patterns in materials. It has been recently shown that topological semimetals such as Weyl semimetals with broken inversion symmetry can generate large nonlinear optical responses. In this paper, we investigate both shift current and SHG in a class of topological nodal line semimetal (NLSM) systems with broken inversion symmetry, which may arise intrinsically or via an applied electric field. It is shown that certain classes of NLSM systems offer more singular shift current and SHG in comparison to the well-known Weyl semimetal systems.

Pre-thermalization via self-driving and external driving of extensive subsystems

We investigate the non-equilibrium states of an interacting multi-component quantum system when only an extensive subsystem is quantum-quenched or driven from the ground state. As a concrete example, we consider a system where two XXZ spin chains are coupled to a transverse field Ising (TFI) chain, and only the transverse field in the TFI chain is quantum-quenched or periodically driven in time, starting from an initially ordered state. This system is studied using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulations and various entanglement entropy diagnostics. In the case of quantum quenching, when the transverse field is suddenly switched on to become the largest energy scale, the resulting internal dynamics leads to a pre-thermal steady state with persistent oscillating magnetization (`self-driving') and emergent conservation laws. Upon applying the time-dependent drive to the TFI chain (`external driving'), sufficiently fast drive gives rise to a pre-thermal steady state with finite magnetization, whereas a slow drive generates a high-temperature disordered state. We briefly discuss the experimental implementation of our protocol in organic materials with quantum-tunneling hydrogen atoms.

Competing $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ dipolar-octupolar quantum spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice: application to Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$

Recent experiments on the dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore compound Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ indicate that it may realize a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid (QSL). In particular, the analyses of available data suggest that the system is in a region of parameter space, where the so-called $π$-flux $U(1)$ octupolar quantum spin ice (QSI) with an emergent photon could be realized. On the other hand, because the system is far from the perturbative classical spin ice regime, it is unclear whether the quantum ground state is primarily a coherent superposition of 2-in-2-out configurations as in the canonical QSI phases. In this work, we explore other possible competing quantum spin liquid states beyond QSI using the Schwinger boson parton construction of the dipolar-octupolar pseudospin-1/2 model. After classifying all symmetric $U(1)$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ QSLs using the projective symmetry group (PSG), we construct a mean-field phase diagram that possesses a number of important features observed in an earlier exact diagonalization study. In the experimentally relevant frustrated region of the phase diagram, we find two closely competing gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ QSLs with a narrow spinon dispersion. The equal-time and dynamical spin structure factors of these states show key features similar to what was reported in neutron scattering experiments. Hence, these QSLs are closely competing ground states in addition to the $π$-flux $U(1)$ QSI, and they should be taken into account on equal footing for the interpretation of experiments on Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$.

Measurement-induced entanglement phase transitions in variational quantum circuits

Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), which classically optimize a parametrized quantum circuit to solve a computational task, promise to advance our understanding of quantum many-body systems and improve machine learning algorithms using near-term quantum computers. Prominent challenges associated with this family of quantum-classical hybrid algorithms are the control of quantum entanglement and quantum gradients linked to their classical optimization. Known as the barren plateau phenomenon, these quantum gradients may rapidly vanish in the presence of volume-law entanglement growth, which poses a serious obstacle to the practical utility of VQAs. Inspired by recent studies of measurement-induced entanglement transition in random circuits, we investigate the entanglement transition in variational quantum circuits endowed with intermediate projective measurements. Considering the Hamiltonian Variational Ansatz (HVA) for the XXZ model and the Hardware Efficient Ansatz (HEA), we observe a measurement-induced entanglement transition from volume-law to area-law with increasing measurement rate. Moreover, we provide evidence that the transition belongs to the same universality class of random unitary circuits. Importantly, the transition coincides with a "landscape transition" from severe to mild/no barren plateaus in the classical optimization. Our work paves an avenue for greatly improving the trainability of quantum circuits by incorporating intermediate measurement protocols in currently available quantum hardware.

Dynamical Signatures of Rank-2 $U(1)$ Spin Liquids

Emergent $U(1)$ gauge theories and artificial photons in frustrated magnets are outstanding examples of many-body collective phenomena. The classical and quantum regimes of these systems provide platforms for classical and quantum spin liquids, and are the subject of current active theoretical and experimental investigations. Recently, realizations of rank-2 $U(1)$ (R2-U1) gauge theories in three-dimensional frustrated magnets have been proposed. Such systems in the quantum regime may lead to the so-called fracton ordered phases -- a new class of topological order that has been associated with quantum stabilizer codes and holography. However, there exist few distinguishing characteristics of these states for their detection in real materials. Here we focus on the classical limit, and present the dynamical spin structure factor for a R2-U1 spin liquid state on a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Remarkably, we find unique signatures of the R2-U1 state, and we contrast them with the results obtained from a more conventional $U(1)$ spin liquid. These results provide a new path of investigation for future inelastic neutron scattering experiments on candidate materials.

Excitation spectrum of spin-1 Kitaev spin liquids

We study the excitation spectrum of the spin-1 Kitaev model using the symmetric tensor network. By evaluating the virtual order parameters defined on the virtual Hilbert space in the tensor network formalism, we confirm the ground state is in a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid phase. Using the correspondence between the transfer matrix spectrum and low-lying excitations, we find that contrary to the dispersive Majorana excitation in the spin-1/2 case, the isotropic spin-1 Kitaev model has a dispersive charge anyon excitation. Bottom of the gapped single-particle charge excitations are found at $\mathbf{K}, \mathbf{K}'=(\pm2π/3, \mp 2π/3)$, with a corresponding correlation length of $ξ\approx 6.7$ unit cells. The lower edge of the two-particle continuum, which is closely related to the dynamical structure factor measured in inelastic neutron scattering experiments, is obtained by extracting the excitations in the vacuum superselection sector in the anyon theory language

Non-Trivial Fixed Points and Truncated SU(4) Kondo Models in a Quasi-Quartet Multipolar Quantum Impurity Problem

The multipolar Kondo problem, wherein the quantum impurity carries higher-rank multipolar moments, has seen recent theoretical and experimental interest due to proposals of novel non-Fermi liquid states and the availability of a variety of material platforms. The multipolar nature of local moments, in conjunction with constraining crystal field symmetries, leads to a vast array of possible interactions and resulting non-Fermi liquid ground states. Previous works on Kondo physics have typically focussed on impurities that have two degenerate internal states. In this work, inspired by recent experiments on the tetragonal material YbRu$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, which has been shown to exhibit a local moment with a quasi-fourfold degenerate ground state, we consider the Kondo effect for such a quasi-quartet multipolar impurity. In the tetragonal crystal field environment, the local moment supports dipolar, quadrupolar, and octupolar moments, which interact with conduction electrons in entangled spin and orbital states. Using renormalization group analysis, we uncover a number of emergent quantum ground states characterized by non-trivial fixed points. It is shown that these previously unidentified fixed points are described by truncated SU(4) Kondo models, where only some of the SU(4) generators (representing the impurity degrees of freedom) are coupled to conduction electrons. Such novel non-trivial fixed points are unique to the quasi-quartet multipolar impurity, reinforcing the idea that an unexplored rich diversity of phenomena may be produced by multipolar quantum impurity systems.

Rise and Fall of Non-Fermi Liquid Fixed Points in Multipolar Kondo Problems

Recently it was shown that the multipolar Kondo problem, wherein a quantum impurity carrying higher-rank multipolar moments interacts with conduction electrons, leads to novel non-Fermi liquid states. Because of the multipolar character of the local moments, the form of the interaction with conduction electrons is strongly dependent on the orbital-symmetry of the conduction electrons via crystalline symmetry constraints. This suggests that there may exist a variety of different non-Fermi liquid states in generic multipolar Kondo problems depending on the character of conduction electrons. In this work, using renormalization group analysis, we investigate a model where the multipolar local moment is coupled to conduction electrons with two different orbital-symmetry components, namely $p$-wave and $f$-wave symmetries. When each orbital-symmetry component is present alone, non-Fermi liquid states with exactly the same thermodynamic singularities appear. When both orbital-symmetry components are allowed, however, a completely different non-Fermi liquid state arises via the quantum fluctuations in the mixed scattering channels. This remarkable result suggests that the multipolar Kondo problem presents novel opportunities for the discovery of unexpected non-Fermi liquid states.

Functional renormalization group study of the Kitaev-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice and emergent incommensurate magnetic correlations

The theoretical inception of the Kitaev honeycomb model has had defining influence on the experimental hunt for quantum spin liquids, bringing unprecedented focus onto the synthesis of materials with bond-directional interactions. Numerous Kitaev materials, which are believed to harbor ground states parametrically close to the Kitaev spin liquid, have been investigated since. Yet, in these materials the Kitaev interaction often comes hand in hand with off-diagonal $Γ$ interactions -- with the competition of the two potentially giving rise to a magnetically ordered ground state. In an attempt to aid future material investigations, we study the phase diagram of the spin-1/2 Kitaev-$Γ$ model on the honeycomb lattice. Employing a pseudofermion functional renormalization group approach which directly operates in the thermodynamic limit and captures the joint effect of thermal and quantum fluctuations, we unveil the existence of extended parameter regimes with emergent incommensurate magnetic correlations at finite temperature. We supplement our results with additional calculations on a finite cylinder geometry to investigate the impact of periodic boundary conditions on the incommensurate order, thereby providing a perspective on previous numerical studies on finite systems.

Unconventional Superconductivity arising from Multipolar Kondo Interactions

The nature of unconventional superconductivity is intimately linked to the microscopic nature of the pairing interactions. In this work, motivated by cubic heavy fermion compounds with embedded multipolar moments, we theoretically investigate superconducting instabilities instigated by multipolar Kondo interactions. Employing multipolar fluctuations (mediated by RKKY interaction) coupled to conduction electrons via two-channel Kondo and novel multipolar Kondo interactions, we uncover a variety of superconducting states characterized by higher-angular momentum Cooper pairs, $J=0,1,2,3$. We demonstrate that both odd and even parity pairing functions are possible, regardless of the total angular momentum of the Cooper pairs, which can be traced back to the atypical nature of the multipolar Kondo interaction that intertwines conduction electron spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We determine that different (point-group) irrep classified pairing functions may coexist with each other, with some of them characterized by gapped and point node structures in their corresponding quasiparticle spectra. This work lays the foundation for discovery and classification of superconducting states in rare-earth metallic compounds with multipolar local moments.

Theoretical study of quantum spin liquids in $S=1/2$ hyper-hyperkagome magnets: classification, heat capacity, and dynamical spin structure factor

Recent experiments suggest a quantum spin liquid ground state in the material PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$, where $S=1/2$ moments are coupled by antiferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions into a three dimensional structure of corner sharing triangles dubbed the hyper-hyperkagome lattice. It exhibits a richer connectivity, and thus likely a stronger geometric frustration, than the relatively well studied hyperkagome lattice. Here, we investigate the possible quantum spin liquids in the $S=1/2$ hyper-hyperkagome magnet using the complex fermion mean field theory. Extending the results of a previous projective symmetry group analysis, we identify only two $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids and a $U(1)$ spin liquid that are compatible with the hyper-hyperkagome structure. The $U(1)$ spin liquid has a spinon Fermi surface. For the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids, one has a small excitation gap, while the other is gapless and proximate to the $U(1)$ spin liquid. We show that the gapped and gapless spin liquids can in principle be distinguished by heat capacity measurements. Moreover, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factors of all three spin liquids and find that they highly resemble the inelastic neutron scattering spectra of PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$. Implications of our work to the experiments, as well as its relations to the existing theoretical studies, are discussed.

Hinge Magnons from Non-collinear Magnetic Order in Honeycomb Antiferromagnet

We propose that non-collinear magnetic order in quantum magnets can harbor a novel higher-order topological magnon phase with non-Hermitian topology and hinge magnon modes. We consider a three-dimensional system of interacting local moments on stacked-layers of honeycomb lattice. It initially favors a collinear magnetic order along an in-plane direction, which turns into a non-collinear order upon applying an external magnetic field perpendicular to the easy axis. We exploit the non-Hermitian nature of the magnon Hamiltonian to show that this field-induced transition corresponds to the transformation from a topological magnon insulator to a higher-order topological magnon state with a one-dimensional hinge mode. As a concrete example, we discuss the recently-discovered monoclinic phase of the thin chromium trihalides, which we propose as the first promising material candidate of the higher-order topological magnon phase.

Characterizing spin-one Kitaev quantum spin liquids

Material realizations of the bond-dependent Kitaev interactions with $S$=1/2 local moments have vitalized the research in quantum spin liquids. Recently, it has been proposed that higher-spin analogues of the Kitaev interactions may also occur in a number of materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. In contrast to the celebrated $S$=1/2 Kitaev model on the honeycomb lattice, the higher-spin Kitaev models are not exactly solvable. Hence, the existence of quantum spin liquids in these systems remains an outstanding question. In this work, we use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods to numerically investigate the $S$=1 Kitaev model with both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions. Using results on a cylindrical geometry with various circumferences, we conclude that the ground state of the $S$=1 Kitaev model is a quantum spin liquid with a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge structure. We also put a bound on the excitation gap, which turns out to be quite small. The magnetic field responses for the FM and AFM models are similar to those of the $S$=1/2 counterparts. In particular, in the AFM $S$=1 model, a gapless quantum liquid state emerges in an intermediate window of magnetic field strength, before the system enters a trivial polarized state.

Exploring entanglement and optimization within the Hamiltonian Variational Ansatz

Quantum variational algorithms are one of the most promising applications of near-term quantum computers; however, recent studies have demonstrated that unless the variational quantum circuits are configured in a problem-specific manner, optimization of such circuits will most likely fail. In this paper, we focus on a special family of quantum circuits called the Hamiltonian Variational Ansatz (HVA), which takes inspiration from the quantum approximation optimization algorithm and adiabatic quantum computation. Through the study of its entanglement spectrum and energy gradient statistics, we find that HVA exhibits favorable structural properties such as mild or entirely absent barren plateaus and a restricted state space that eases their optimization in comparison to the well-studied "hardware-efficient ansatz." We also numerically observe that the optimization landscape of HVA becomes almost trap free when the ansatz is over-parameterized. We observe a size-dependent "computational phase transition" as the number of layers in the HVA circuit is increased where the optimization crosses over from a hard to an easy region in terms of the quality of the approximations and speed of convergence to a good solution. In contrast with the analogous transitions observed in the learning of random unitaries which occur at a number of layers that grows exponentially with the number of qubits, our Variational Quantum Eigensolver experiments suggest that the threshold to achieve the over-parameterization phenomenon scales at most polynomially in the number of qubits for the transverse field Ising and XXZ models. Lastly, as a demonstration of its entangling power and effectiveness, we show that HVA can find accurate approximations to the ground states of a modified Haldane-Shastry Hamiltonian on a ring, which has long-range interactions and has a power-law entanglement scaling.

Clusterization transition between cluster Mott insulators on a breathing Kagomé lattice

Motivated by recent experimental progress on various cluster Mott insulators, we study an extended Hubbard model on a breathing Kagomé lattice with a single electron orbital and $1/6$ electron filling. Two distinct types of cluster localization are found in the cluster Mott regime due to the presence of the electron repulsion between neighboring sites, rather than from the on-site Hubbard interaction in the conventional Mott insulators. We introduce a unified parton construction framework to accommodate both type of cluster Mott insulating phase as well as a trivial Ferm liquid metal and discuss the phase transitions in the phase diagram. It is shown that, in one of the cluster localization phases, the strong inter-site repulsion results into locally metallic behavior within one of two triangular clusters on the breathing Kagomé lattice. We further comment on experimental relevance to existing Mo-based cluster magnets.

Critical theory of non-Fermi liquid fixed point in multipolar Kondo problem

When the ground state of a localized ion is a non-Kramers doublet, such localized ions may carry multipolar moments. For example, Pr$^{3+}$ ions in a cubic environment would possess quadrupolar and octupolar, but no magnetic dipole, moments. When such multipolar moments are placed in a metallic host, unusual interactions between these local moments and conduction electrons arise, in contrast to the familiar magnetic dipole interactions in the classic Kondo problem. In this work, we consider the interaction between a single quadrupolar-octupolar local moment and conduction electrons with $p$-orbital symmetry as a concrete model for the multipolar Kondo problem. We show that this model can be written most naturally in the spin-orbital entangled basis of conduction electrons. Using this basis, the perturbative renormalization group (RG) fixed points are readily identified. There are two kinds of fixed points, one for the two-channel Kondo and the other for a novel fixed point. We investigate the nature of the novel fixed point non-perturbatively using non-abelian bosonization, current algebra and conformal field theory approaches. It is shown that the novel fixed point leads to a, previously unidentified, non-Fermi liquid state with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom, which shows resistivity $ρ\sim T^Δ$ and diverging specific heat coefficient $C/T \sim T^{-1 + 2Δ}$ with $Δ=1/5$. Our results open up the possibility of myriads of non-Fermi liquid states, depending on the choices of multipolar moments and conduction electron orbitals, which would be relevant for many rare-earth metallic systems.

Spectroscopic fingerprints of gapped quantum spin liquids, both conventional and fractonic

We explain how gapped quantum spin liquids, both conventional and 'fractonic', may be unambiguously diagnosed experimentally using the technique of multidimensional coherent spectroscopy. 'Conventional' gapped quantum spin liquids (e.g. $Z_2$ spin liquid) do not have clear signatures in linear response, but do have clear fingerprints in non-linear response, accessible through the already existing experimental technique of two dimensional coherent spectroscopy. Type I fracton phases (e.g. X-cube) are (surprisingly) even easier to distinguish, with strongly suggestive features even in linear response, and unambiguous signatures in non-linear response. Type II fracton systems, like Haah's code, are most subtle, and may require consideration of high order non-linear response for unambiguous diagnosis.

Emergence of a nematic paramagnet via quantum order-by-disorder and pseudo-Goldstone modes in Kitaev magnets

The appearance of nontrivial phases in Kitaev materials exposed to an external magnetic field has recently been a subject of intensive studies. Here, we elucidate the relation between the field-induced ground states of the classical and quantum spin models proposed for such materials, by using the infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and the linear spin wave theory (LSWT). We consider the $K ΓΓ'$ model, where $Γ$ and $Γ'$ are off-diagonal spin exchanges on top of the dominant Kitaev interaction $K$. Focusing on the magnetic field along the $[111]$ direction, we explain the origin of the nematic paramagnet, which breaks the lattice-rotational symmetry and exists in an extended window of magnetic field, in the quantum model. This phenomenon can be understood as the effect of quantum order-by-disorder in the frustrated ferromagnet with a continuous manifold of degenerate ground states discovered in the corresponding classical model. We compute the dynamical spin structure factors using a matrix operator based time evolution and compare them with the predictions from LSWT. We, thus, provide predictions for future inelastic neutron scattering experiments on Kitaev materials in an external magnetic field along the $[111]$ direction. In particular, the nematic paramagnet exhibits a characteristic pseudo-Goldstone mode which results from the lifting of a continuous degeneracy via quantum fluctuations.
