Recent progress on correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling

Emergence of novel quantum ground states in correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling has been a recent subject of intensive studies. While it has been realized that spin-orbit coupling can provide non-trivial band topology in weakly interacting electron systems, as in topological insulators and semi-metals, the role of electron-electron interaction in strongly spin-orbit coupled systems has not been fully understood. The availability of new materials with significant electron correlation and strong spin-orbit coupling now makes such investigations possible. Many of these materials contain 5d or 4d transition metal elements; the prominent examples are iridium oxides or iridates. In this review, we succinctly discuss recent theoretical and experimental progress on this subject. After providing a brief overview, we focus on pyrochlore iridates and three-dimensional honeycomb iridates. In pyrochlore iridates, we discuss the quantum criticality of the bulk and surface states, and the relevance of the surface/boundary states in a number of topological and magnetic ground states, both in the bulk and thin film configurations. Experimental signatures of these boundary and bulk states are discussed. Domain wall formation and strongly-direction-dependent magneto-transport are also discussed. Regarding the three-dimensional honeycomb iridates, we consider possible quantum spin liquid phases and unusual magnetic orders in theoretical models with strongly bond-dependent interactions. These theoretical ideas and results are discussed in light of recent resonant X-ray scattering experiments on three-dimensional honeycomb iridates. We also contrast these results with the situation in two-dimensional honeycomb iridates. We conclude with the outlook on other related systems.

Quasiparticle-continuum level repulsion in a quantum magnet

When the energy eigenvalues of two coupled quantum states approach each other in a certain parameter space, their energy levels repel each other and level crossing is avoided. Such level repulsion, or avoided level crossing, is commonly used to describe the dispersion relation of quasiparticles in solids. However, little is known about the level repulsion when more than two quasiparticles are present; for example, in an open quantum system where a quasiparticle can spontaneously decay into many particle continuum. Here we show that even in this case level repulsion exists between a long-lived quasiparticle state and a continuum. In our fine resolution neutron spectroscopy study of magnetic quasiparticles in a frustrated quantum magnet BiCu2PO6, we observe a renormalization of quasiparticle dispersion relation due to the presence of the continuum of multi-quasiparticle states. Our results have a broadimplication for understanding open quantum systems described by non-hermitian Hamiltonian.

Anisotropic density fluctuations, plasmons, and Friedel oscillations in nodal line semimetal

Motivated by recent experimental efforts on three-dimensional semimetals, we investigate the static and dynamic density response of the nodal line semimetal by computing the polarizability for both undoped and doped cases. The nodal line semimetal in the absence of doping is characterized by a ring-shape zero energy contour in momentum space, which may be considered as a collection of Dirac points. In the doped case, the Fermi surface has a torus shape and two independent processes of the momentum transfer contribute to the singular features of the polarizability even though we only have a single Fermi surface. In the static limit, there exist two independent singularities in the second derivative of the static polarizability. This results in the highly anisotropic Friedel oscillations which show the angle-dependent algebraic power law and the beat phenomena in the oscillatory electron density near a charged impurity. Furthermore, the dynamical polarizability has two singular lines along $\hbarω= γp$ and $\hbarω= γp \sinη$, where $η$ is the angle between the external momentum $\vec{p}$ and the plane where the nodal ring lies. From the dynamical polarizability, we obtain the plasmon modes in the doped case, which show anisotropic dispersions and angle-dependent plasma frequencies. Qualitative differences between the low and high doping regimes are discussed in light of future experiments.

X-ray scattering study of pyrochlore iridates: crystal structure, electronic and magnetic excitations

We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.

Ab initio holography

We apply the quantum renormalization group to construct a holographic dual for the U(N) vector model for complex bosons defined on a lattice. The bulk geometry becomes dynamical as the hopping amplitudes which determine connectivity of space are promoted to quantum variables. In the large N limit, the full bulk equations of motion for the dynamical hopping fields are numerically solved for finite systems. From finite size scaling, we show that different phases exhibit distinct geometric features in the bulk. In the insulating phase, the space gets fragmented into isolated islands deep inside the bulk, exhibiting ultra-locality. In the superfluid phase, the bulk exhibits a horizon beyond which the geometry becomes non-local. Right at the horizon, the hopping fields decay with a universal power-law in coordinate distance between sites, while they decay in slower power-laws with continuously varying exponents inside the horizon. At the critical point, the bulk exhibits a local geometry whose characteristic length scale diverges asymptotically in the IR limit.

Two iridates, two models, two approaches: a comparative study on magnetism in 3D honeycomb materials

Two recent theoretical works studied the role of Kitaev interactions in the newly observed incommensurate magnetic order in the hyper-honeycomb ($β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) and stripy-honeycomb ($γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$) iridates. Each of these works analyzed a different model ($JKΓ$ versus coupled zigzag chain model) using a contrasting method (classical versus soft-spin analysis). The lack of commonality between these works precludes meaningful comparisons and a proper understanding of these unusual orderings. In this study, we complete the unfinished picture initiated by these two works by solving both models with both approaches for both 3D honeycomb iridates. Through comparisons between all combinations of models, techniques, and materials, we find that the bond-isotropic $JKΓ$ model consistently predicts the experimental phase of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ regardless of the method used, while the experimental phase of $γ$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ can be generated by the soft-spin approach with eigenmode mixing irrespective of the model used. To gain further insights, we solve a 1D quantum spin-chain model related to both 3D models using the density matrix renormalization group method to form a benchmark. We discover that in the 1D model, incommensurate correlations in the classical and soft-spin analysis survive in the quantum limit only in the presence of the symmetric-off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ found in the $JKΓ$ model. The relevance of these results to the real materials are also discussed.

Landau Level Quantization and Almost Flat Modes in Three-dimensional Semi-metals with Nodal Ring Spectra

We investigate novel Landau level structures of semi-metals with nodal ring dispersions. When the magnetic field is applied parallel to the plane in which the ring lies, there exist almost non-dispersive Landau levels at the Fermi level (E_F = 0) as a function of the momentum along the field direction inside the ring. We show that the Landau levels at each momentum along the field direction can be described by the Hamiltonian for the graphene bilayer with fictitious inter-layer couplings under a tilted magnetic field. Near the center of the ring where the inter-layer coupling is negligible, we have Dirac Landau levels which explain the appearance of the zero modes. Although the inter-layer hopping amplitudes become finite at higher momenta, the splitting of zero modes is exponentially small and they remain almost flat due to the finite artificial in-plane component of the magnetic field. The emergence of the density of states peak at the Fermi level would be a hallmark of the ring dispersion.

Topological spinon semimetals and gapless boundary states in three dimensions

Recently there has been much effort in understanding topological phases of matter with gapless bulk excitations, which are characterized by topological invariants and protected intrinsic boundary states. Here we show that topological semimetals of Majorana fermions arise in exactly solvable Kitaev spin models on a series of three dimensional lattices. The ground states of these models are quantum spin liquids with gapless nodal spectra of bulk Majorana fermion excitations. It is shown that these phases are topologically stable as long as certain discrete symmetries are protected. The corresponding topological indices and the gapless boundary states are explicitly computed to support these results. In contrast to previous studies of non-interacting systems, the phases discussed in this work are novel examples of gapless topological phases in interacting spin systems.

Quantum oscillations in the Luttinger model with quadratic band touching: applications to pyrochlore iridates

Motivated by recent experiments on Pr2Ir2O7, we provide a theory of quantum oscillations in the Luttinger model with quadratic band touching, modelled for the spin-orbit-coupled conduction electrons in pyrochlore iridates. The magneto- and Hall resistivities are computed for electron- and hole-doped systems, and the corresponding Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) signals are investigated. The SdH signals are characterized by aperiodic behaviors that originate from the unconventional Landau level structures of the Luttinger model near the neutrality point, such as the inter-Landau level crossing, nonuniform Landau level spacings and non-parabolic dispersions along the applied magnetic-field direction. The aperiodic SdH signals observed in the paramagnetic state of Pr2Ir2O7 are shown to be consistent with such behaviors, justifying the use of the Luttinger model and the quadratic band touching spectrum as excellent starting points for physics of pyrochlore iridates. The implications of these results are discussed in light of recent theoretical and experimental devel- opments in these systems.

Signatures of spin-triplet excitations in optical conductivity of valence bond solids

We show that the optical responses below the Mott gap can be used to probe the spin-triplet excitations in valence bond solid (VBS) phases in Mott insulators. The optical conductivity in this regime arises due to the electronic polarization mechanism via virtual electron hopping processes. We apply this mechanism to the Hubbard model with spin-orbit couplings and/or the corresponding spin model with significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions, and compute the optical conductivity of VBS states on both ideal and deformed Kagome lattices. In case of the deformed Kagome lattice, we study the antiferromagnet, Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ with the pinwheel VBS state. In case of the ideal Kagome lattice, we explore the optical conductivity signatures of the spin-triplet excitations for three VBS states with (1) a 12-site unit cell, (2) a 36-site unit cell with six-fold rotation symmetry, and (3) a 36-site unit cell with three-fold rotation symmetry, respectively. We find that increasing the DM interactions generally leads to broad and smooth features in the optical conductivity with interesting experimental consequences. The optical conductivity reflects the features of the spin-triplet excitations that can be measured in future experiments.

Fractionalized charge excitations in a spin liquid on partially-filled pyrochlore lattice

We study the Mott transition from a metal to cluster Mott insulators in the 1/4- and 1/8-filled pyrochlore lattice systems. It is shown that such Mott transitions can arise due to charge localization in clusters or in tetrahedron units, driven by the nearest-neighbor repulsive interaction. The resulting cluster Mott insulator is a quantum spin liquid with a spinon Fermi surface, but at the same time a novel fractionalized charge liquid with charge excitations carrying half the electron charge. There exist two emergent U(1) gauge fields or "photons" that mediate interactions between spinons and charge excitations, and between fractionalized charge excitations themselves, respectively. In particular, it is suggested that the emergent photons associated with the fractionalized charge excitations can be measured in X-ray scattering experiments. Various other experimental signatures of the exotic cluster Mott insulator are discussed in light of candidate materials with partially-filled bands on the pyrochlore lattice.

Odd-parity triplet superconductivity in multi-orbital materials with strong spin-orbit coupling: applications to doped Sr2IrO4

We explore possible superconducting states in $t_{2g}$ multi-orbital correlated electron systems with strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In order to study such systems in a controlled manner, we employ large-scale dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) simulations with the hybridization expansion continuous-time Quantum Monte Carlo (CTQMC) impurity solver. To determine the pairing symmetry, we go beyond the local DMFT formalism using parquet equations to introduce the momentum dependence in the two-particle vertex and correlation functions. In the strong SOC limit, a singlet, $d$-wave pairing state in the electron-doped side of the phase diagram is observed at weak Hund's coupling, which is triggered by antiferromagnetic fluctuations. When the Hund's coupling is comparable to SOC, a two-fold degenerate, triplet $p$-wave pairing state with relatively high $T_c$ emerges in the hole-doped side of the phase diagram, which is associated with enhanced charge fluctuations. Experimental implications to doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ are discussed.

Theory of Magnetic Phase Diagrams in Hyperhoneycomb and Harmonic-honeycomb Iridates

Motivated by recent experiments, we consider a generic spin model in the $j_{\text{eff}}=1/2$ basis for the hyperhoneycomb and harmonic-honeycomb iridates. Based on microscopic considerations, the effect of an additional bond-dependent anisotropic spin exchange interaction ($Γ$) beyond the Heisenberg-Kitaev model is investigated. We obtain the magnetic phase diagrams of the hyperhoneycomb and harmonic-honeycomb ($\mathcal{H}\text{--}1$) lattices via a combination of the Luttinger-Tisza approximation, single-$\mathbf{Q}$ variational ansatz, and classical Monte Carlo simulated annealing. The resulting phase diagrams on both systems show the existence of incommensurate, non-coplanar spiral magnetic orders as well as other commensurate magnetic orders. The spiral orders show counter-propagating spiral patterns, which may be favorably compared to recent experimental results on both iridates. The parameter regime of various magnetic orders and ordering wavevectors are quite similar in both systems. We discuss the implications of our work to recent experiments and also compare our results to those of the two dimensional honeycomb iridate systems.

Non-Fermi Liquid in Dirac Semi-metals

Quantum criticality, a manifestation of emergent scale invariance in electron wavefunctions arises from intricate many-body quantum entanglement. One of the natural venues for the criticality is clean undoped Dirac semimetals, known as a marginally-renormalized critical phase. The ground state is only slightly modified from the Slater-type product wavefunction because the scatterings from weak disorder and Coulomb interactions are suppressed. Here, using the renormalization group (RG) analysis, we show that a novel class of quantum criticality appears in Dirac semimetals when the disorder strength becomes sufficiently strong in the presence of Coulomb interactions so that a quantum phase transition from the marginally-renormalized critical phase to a disorder-dominated phase arises. The ground state at the critical point is a quantum critical non-Fermi liquid (NFL), characterized by the properties of strongly entangled low-energy states such as the absence of quasi-particles. Near the critical point, unusually wide temperature regions with NFL behaviors emerge.

Spin susceptibility anomaly in cluster Mott insulators on a partially-filled anisotropic Kagome lattice: applications to LiZn2Mo3O8

Motivated by recent experiments on the quantum-spin-liquid candidate material LiZn2Mo3O8, we study a single-band extended Hubbard model on an anisotropic Kagome lattice with the 1/6 electron filling. Due to the partial filling of the lattice, the inter-site repulsive interaction is necessary to generate Mott insulators, where electrons are localized in clusters, rather than at lattice sites. We provide examples of such cluster Mott insulators and study the phase transitions between metallic states and cluster Mott insulators on an anisotropic Kagome lattice. It is shown that these cluster Mott insulators are generally U(1) quantum spin liquids with spinon Fermi surfaces. However, the nature of charge excitations in different cluster Mott insulators could be quite different and we show that there exists a novel cluster Mott insulator where charge fluctuations around the hexagonal cluster induce a plaquette charge order (PCO). The spinon excitation spectrum in this spin-liquid cluster Mott insulator is reconstructed due to the PCO so that only 1/3 of the total spinon excitations are magnetically active. The strong coupling limit of the same model is also analyzed via a Kugel-Khomskii-like model. Based on these results, we propose that the anomalous behavior of the finite-temperature spin-susceptibility in LiZn2Mo3O8 may be explained by finite-temperature properties of the cluster Mott insulator with the PCO as well as fractionalized spinon excitations. Existing and possible future experiments on LiZn2Mo3O8, and other Mo-based cluster magnets are discussed in light of these theoretical predictions.

Optical gyrotropy in quadrupolar Kondo systems

Recent experiments point to a variety of intermetallic systems which exhibit exotic quadrupolar orders driven by the Kondo coupling between conduction electrons and localized quadrupolar degrees of freedom. Using a Luttinger k.p Hamiltonian for the conduction electrons, we study the impact of such quadrupolar order on their energies and wave functions. We discover that such quadrupolar orders can induce a nontrivial Berry curvature for the conduction electron bands, leading to a nonvanishing optical gyrotropic effect. We estimate the magnitude of the gyrotropic response in a candidate quadrupolar material, PrPb3, and discuss the resulting Faraday rotation in thin films.

Correlated quantum phenomena in the strong spin-orbit regime

We discuss phenomena arising from the combined influence of electron correlation and spin-orbit coupling, with an emphasis on emergent quantum phases and transitions in heavy transition metal compounds with 4d and 5d elements. A common theme is the influence of spin-orbital entanglement produced by spin-orbit coupling, which influences the electronic and magnetic structure. In the weak-to-intermediate correlation regime, we show how non-trivial band-like topology leads to a plethora of phases related to topological insulators. We expound these ideas using the example of pyrochlore iridates, showing how many novel phases such as the Weyl semi-metal, axion insulator, topological Mott insulator, and topological insulators may arise in this context. In the strong correlation regime, we argue that spin-orbital entanglement fully or partially removes orbital degeneracy, reducing or avoiding the normally ubiquitous Jahn-Teller effect. As we illustrate for the honeycomb lattice iridates and double perovskites, this leads to enhanced quantum fluctuations of the spin-orbital entangled states and the chance to promote exotic quantum spin liquid and multipolar ordered ground states. Connections to experiments, materials, and future directions are discussed.

Emergent quantum phases in a frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model on hyperhoneycomb lattice

We investigate possible quantum ground states as well as the classical limit of a frustrated J1-J2 Heisenberg model on the three-dimensional (3D) hyperhoneycomb lattice. Our study is inspired by the recent discovery of beta-Li2IrO3, where Ir^{4+} ions form a 3D network with each lattice site being connected to three nearest neighbors. We focus on the influence of magnetic frustration caused by the second-nearest neighbor spin interactions. Such interactions are likely to be significant due to large extent of 5d orbitals in iridates or other 5d transition metal oxides. In the classical limit, the ground state manifold is given by line degeneracies of the spiral magnetic-order wavevectors when J2/J1\gtrsim 0.17 while the collinear stripy order is included in the degenerate manifold when J2/J1 = 0.5. Quantum order-by-disorder effects are studied using both the semi-classical $1/S$ expansion in the spin wave theory and Schwinger boson approach. In general, certain coplanar spiral orders are chosen from the classical degenerate manifold for a large fraction of the phase diagram. Nonetheless quantum fluctuations favor the collinear stripy order over the spiral orders in an extended parameter region around J2/J1 = 0.5, despite the spin-rotation invariance of the underlying Hamiltonian. This is in contrast to the emergence of stripy order in the Heisenberg-Kitaev model studied earlier on the same lattice, where the Kitaev-type Ising interactions are important for stabilizing the stripy order. As quantum fluctuations become stronger, U(1) and Z2 quantum spin liquid phases are shown to arise via quantum disordering of the Neel, stripy and spiral magnetically-ordered phases. The effects of magnetic anisotropy and their relevance to future experiments are also discussed.
