Magnetic-coupled electronic landscape in bilayer-distorted titanium-based kagome metals

Quantum materials whose atoms are arranged on a lattice of corner-sharing triangles, $\textit{i.e.}$, the kagome lattice, have recently emerged as a captivating platform for investigating exotic correlated and topological electronic phenomena. Here, we combine ultra-low temperature angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory calculations to reveal the fascinating electronic structure of the bilayer-distorted kagome material $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$, where $\textit{Ln}$ stands for Nd and Yb. Distinct from other kagome materials, $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$ exhibits two-fold, rather than six-fold, symmetries, stemming from the distorted kagome lattice, which leads to a unique electronic structure. Combining experiment and theory we map out the electronic structure and discover double flat bands as well as multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs), with one VHS exhibiting higher-order characteristics near the Fermi level. Notably, in the magnetic version NdTi${_3}$Bi${_4}$, the ultra-low base temperature ARPES measurements unveil an unconventional band splitting in the band dispersions which is induced by the ferromagnetic ordering. These findings reveal the potential of bilayer-distorted kagome metals $\textit{Ln}$Ti${_3}$Bi${_4}$ as a promising platform for exploring novel emergent phases of matter at the intersection of strong correlation and magnetism.

Chow Groups of Quadrics in Characteristic Two

Let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric defined over a field of characteristic 2. We prove that in the Chow group of codimension 2 or 3 of $X$ the torsion subgroup has at most two elements. In codimension 2, we determine precisely when this torsion subgroup is nontrivial. In codimension 3, we show that there is no torsion if $\dim X\ge 11$. This extends the analogous results in characteristic different from 2, obtained by Karpenko in the nineteen-nineties.

Phonon promoted charge density wave in topological kagome metal ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$

Charge density wave (CDW) orders in vanadium-based kagome metals have recently received tremendous attention due to their unique properties and intricate interplay with exotic correlated phenomena, topological and symmetry-breaking states. However, the origin of the CDW order remains a topic of debate. The discovery of ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$, a vanadium-based bilayer kagome metal exhibiting an in-plane $\sqrt{3}$ x $\sqrt{3} $ $\textit{R}$30$°$ CDW order with time-reversal symmetry breaking, provides a novel platform to explore the underlying mechanism behind the unconventional CDW. Here, we combine high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Raman scattering measurements and density functional theory to investigate the electronic structures and phonon modes of ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and their evolution with temperature. We identify topologically nontrivial Dirac surface states and multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi level, with one VHS near the K point exhibiting nesting wave vectors in proximity to the $\sqrt{3}$ x $\sqrt{3}$ $\textit{R}$30$°$ CDW wave vector. Additionally, Raman measurements indicate a strong intrinsic electron-phonon coupling in ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$, as evidenced by the presence of a two-phonon mode and a large frequency amplitude mode. Our findings highlight the fundamental role of lattice degrees of freedom in promoting the CDW in ScV$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ and provide important insights into the fascinating correlation phenomena observed in kagome metals.

On $n$-universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields

Let $ n \ge 2$ be an integer. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for an integral quadratic form over dyadic local fields to be $ n $-universal by using invariants from Beli's theory of bases of norm generators. Also, we provide a minimal set for testing $ n $-universal quadratic forms over dyadic local fields, as an analogue of Bhargava and Hanke's 290-theorem (or Conway and Schneeberger's 15-theorem) on universal quadratic forms with integer coefficients.

ARPES signature of the competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect in CeCoGe3

The competition between magnetic order and Kondo effect is essential for the rich physics of heavy fermion systems. Nevertheless, how such competition is manifested in the quasiparticle bands in a real periodic lattice remains elusive in spectroscopic experiments. Here we report a high-resolution photoemission study of the antiferromagnetic Kondo lattice system CeCoGe3 with a high TN1 of 21K. Our measurements reveal a weakly dispersive 4f band at the Fermi level near the Z point, arisingfrom moderate Kondo effect. The intensity of this heavy 4f band exhibits a logarithmic increase with lowering temperature and begins to deviate from this Kondo-like behavior below 25 K, just above TN1, and eventually ceases to grow below 12 K. Our work provides direct spectroscopic evidence for the competition between magnetic order and the Kondo effect in a Kondo lattice system with local-moment antiferromagnetism, indicating a distinct scenario for the microscopic coexistence and competition of these phenomena, which might be related to the real-space modulation.

Non-trivial band topology and orbital-selective electronic nematicity in a new titanium-based kagome superconductor

Electronic nematicity that spontaneously breaks rotational symmetry has been shown as a generic phenomenon in correlated quantum systems including high-temperature superconductors and the AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) family with a kagome network. Identifying the driving force has been a central challenge for understanding nematicity. In iron-based superconductors, the problem is complicated because the spin, orbital and lattice degrees of freedom are intimately coupled. In vanadium-based kagome superconductors AV3Sb5, the electronic nematicity exhibits an intriguing entanglement with the charge density wave order (CDW), making understanding its origin difficult. Recently, a new family of titanium-based kagome superconductors ATi3Bi5 has been synthesized. In sharp contrast to its vanadium-based counterpart, the electronic nematicity occurs in the absence of CDW. ATi3Bi5 provides a new window to explore the mechanism of electronic nematicity and its interplay with the orbital degree of freedom. Here, we combine polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory to directly reveal the band topology and orbital characters of the multi-orbital RbTi3Bi5. The promising coexistence of flat bands, type-II Dirac nodal line and nontrivial Z2 topological states is identified in RbTi3Bi5. Remarkably, our study clearly unveils the orbital character change along the G-M and G-K directions, implying a strong intrinsic inter-orbital coupling in the Ti-based kagome metals, reminiscent of iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, doping-dependent measurements directly uncover the orbital-selective features in the kagome bands, which can be well explained by the d-p hybridization. The suggested d-p hybridization, in collaboration with the inter-orbital coupling, could account for the electronic nematicity in ATi3Bi5.

On $k$-universal quadratic lattices over unramified dyadic local fields

Let $k$ be a positive integer and let $F$ be a finite unramified extension of $\mathbb{Q}_2$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_F$. An integral (resp. classic) quadratic form over $\mathcal{O}_F$ is called $k$-universal (resp. classically $k$-universal) if it represents all integral (resp. classic) quadratic forms of dimension $k$. In this paper, we provide a complete classification of $k$-universal and classically $k$-universal quadratic forms over $\mathcal{O}_F$. The results are stated in terms of the fundamental invariants associated to Jordan splittings of quadratic lattices.

Tunable Topological Dirac Surface States and Van Hove Singularities in Kagome Metal GdV${_6}$Sn${_6}$

Transition-metal-based kagome materials at van Hove filling are a rich frontier for the investigation of novel topological electronic states and correlated phenomena. To date, in the idealized two-dimensional kagome lattice, topologically nontrivial Dirac surface states (TDSSs) have not been unambiguously observed, and the manipulation of TDSSs and van Hove singularities (VHSs) remains largely unexplored. Here, we reveal TDSSs originating from a Z${_2}$ bulk topology and identify multiple VHSs near the Fermi level ($\textit{E}$${_F}$) in magnetic kagome material GdV${_6}$Sn${_6}$. Using in-situ surface potassium deposition, we successfully realize manipulation of the TDSSs and VHSs. The Dirac point of the TDSSs can be tuned from above to below ($\textit{E}$${_F}$), which reverses the chirality of the spin texture at the Fermi surface. These results establish GdV${_6}$Sn${_6}$ as a fascinating platform for studying the nontrivial topology, magnetism and correlation effects native to kagome lattices. They also suggest potential application of spintronic devices based on kagome materials.

giMLPs: Gate with Inhibition Mechanism in MLPs

This paper presents a new model architecture, gate with inhibition MLP (giMLP).The gate with inhibition on CycleMLP (gi-CycleMLP) can produce equal performance on the ImageNet classification task, and it also improves the BERT, Roberta, and DeBERTaV3 models depending on two novel techniques. The first is the gating MLP, where matrix multiplications between the MLP and the trunk Attention input in further adjust models' adaptation. The second is inhibition which inhibits or enhances the branch adjustment, and with the inhibition levels increasing, it offers models more muscular features restriction. We show that the giCycleMLP with a lower inhibition level can be competitive with the original CycleMLP in terms of ImageNet classification accuracy. In addition, we also show through a comprehensive empirical study that these techniques significantly improve the performance of fine-tuning NLU downstream tasks. As for the gate with inhibition MLPs on DeBERTa (giDeBERTa) fine-tuning, we find it can achieve appealing results on most parts of NLU tasks without any extra pretraining again. We also find that with the use of Gate With Inhibition, the activation function should have a short and smooth negative tail, with which the unimportant features or the features that hurt models can be moderately inhibited. The experiments on ImageNet and twelve language downstream tasks demonstrate the effectiveness of Gate With Inhibition, both for image classification and for enhancing the capacity of nature language fine-tuning without any extra pretraining.

On indefinite $k$-universal integral quadratic forms over number fields

An integral quadratic lattice is called indefinite $k$-universal if it represents all integral quadratic lattices of rank $k$ for a given positive integer $k$. For $k\geq 3$, we prove that the indefinite $k$-universal property satisfies the local-global principle over number fields. For $k=2$, we show that a number field $F$ admits an integral quadratic lattice which is locally $2$-universal but not indefinite 2-universal if and only if the class number of $F$ is even. Moreover, there are only finitely many classes of such lattices over $F$. For $k=1$, we prove that $F$ admits a classic integral lattice which is locally classic $1$-universal but not classic indefinite $1$-universal if and only if $F$ has a quadratic unramified extension where all dyadic primes of $F$ split completely. In this case, there are infinitely many classes of such lattices over $F$. All quadratic fields with this property are determined.

Relative Severi inequality for fibrations of maximal Albanese dimension over curves

Let $f: X \to B$ be a relatively minimal fibration of maximal Albanese dimension from a variety $X$ of dimension $n \ge 2$ to a curve $B$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that $K_{X/B}^n \ge 2n! χ_f$, which was conjectured by Barja in [2]. Via the strategy outlined in [5], it also leads to a new proof of the Severi inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. Moreover, when the equality holds and $χ_f > 0$, we prove that the general fiber $F$ of $f$ has to satisfy the Severi equality that $K_F^{n-1} = 2(n-1)! χ(F, ω_F)$. We also prove some sharper results of the same type under extra assumptions.

Unramified Cohomology of Quadrics in Characteristic Two

Let $F$ be a field of characteristic 2 and let $X$ be a smooth projective quadric of dimension $\ge 1$ over $F$. We study the unramified cohomology groups with 2-primary torsion coefficients of $X$ in degrees 2 and 3. We determine completely the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map from the cohomology of $F$ to the unramified cohomology of $X$. This extends the results in characteristic different from 2 obtained by Kahn, Rost and Sujatha in the nineteen-nineties.

Algebraic threefolds of general type with small volume

It is known that the optimal Noether inequality $\mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3}p_g(X) - \frac{10}{3}$ holds for every $3$-fold $X$ of general type with $p_g(X) \ge 11$. In this paper, we give a complete classification of $3$-folds $X$ of general type with $p_g(X) \ge 11$ satisfying the above equality by giving the explicit structure of a relative canonical model of $X$. This model coincides with the canonical model of $X$ when $p_g(X) \ge 23$. We also establish the second and third optimal Noether inequalities for $3$-folds $X$ of general type with $p_g(X) \ge 11$. These results answer two open questions raised by J. Chen, M. Chen and C. Jiang, and in dimension three an open question raised by J. Chen and C. Lai. A novel phenomenon shows that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the three Noether inequalities and three possible residues of $p_g(X)$ modulo $3$.

Noether-Severi inequality and equality for irregular threefolds of general type

We prove the optimal Noether-Severi inequality that $\mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3} χ(ω_{X})$ for all smooth and irregular $3$-folds $X$ of general type over $\mathbb{C}$. For those $3$-folds $X$ attaining the equality, we completely describe their canonical models and show that the topological fundamental group $π_1(X) \simeq \mathbb{Z}^2$. As a corollary, we obtain for the same $X$ another optimal inequality that $\mathrm{vol}(X) \ge \frac{4}{3}h^0_a(X, K_X)$ where $h^0_a(X, K_X)$ stands for the continuous rank of $K_X$, and we show that $X$ attains this equality if and only if $\mathrm{vol}(X) = \frac{4}{3}χ(ω_{X})$.

Coexistence of Tri-Hexagonal and Star-of-David Pattern in the Charge Density Wave of the Kagome Superconductor AV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$(A=K, Rb, Cs) have attracted much attention because of their unique combination of superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) order, and nontrivial band topology. The CDW order with an in-plane 2x2 reconstruction is found to exhibit exotic properties, such as time-reversal symmetry breaking and rotational symmetry breaking. However, the nature of the CDW, including its dimensionality, structural pattern, and effect on electronic structure, remains elusive despite intense research efforts. Here, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we unveil for the first time characteristic double-band splittings and band reconstructions, as well as the band gap resulting from band folding, in the CDW phase. Supported by density functional theory calculations, we unambiguously show that the CDW in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ originates from the intrinsic coexistence of Star-of-David and Tri-Hexagonal distortions. The alternating stacking of these two distortions naturally leads to three-dimensional 2x2x2 or 2x2x4 CDW order. Our results provide crucial insights into the nature and distortion pattern of the CDW order, thereby laying down the basis for a substantiated understanding of the exotic properties in the family of AV$_3$Sb$_5$ kagome metals.

Morphological feature visualization of Alzheimer's disease via Multidirectional Perception GAN

The diagnosis of early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is essential for timely treatment to slow further deterioration. Visualizing the morphological features for the early stages of AD is of great clinical value. In this work, a novel Multidirectional Perception Generative Adversarial Network (MP-GAN) is proposed to visualize the morphological features indicating the severity of AD for patients of different stages. Specifically, by introducing a novel multidirectional mapping mechanism into the model, the proposed MP-GAN can capture the salient global features efficiently. Thus, by utilizing the class-discriminative map from the generator, the proposed model can clearly delineate the subtle lesions via MR image transformations between the source domain and the pre-defined target domain. Besides, by integrating the adversarial loss, classification loss, cycle consistency loss and \emph{L}1 penalty, a single generator in MP-GAN can learn the class-discriminative maps for multiple-classes. Extensive experimental results on Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset demonstrate that MP-GAN achieves superior performance compared with the existing methods. The lesions visualized by MP-GAN are also consistent with what clinicians observe.

0-$π$ qubit in one Josephson junction

Quantum states are usually fragile which makes quantum computation being not as stable as classical computation. Quantum correction codes can protect quantum states but need a large number of physical qubits to code a single logic qubit. Alternatively, the protection at the hardware level has been recently developed to maintain the coherence of the quantum information by using symmetries. However, it generally has to pay the expense of increasing the complexity of the quantum devices. In this work, we show that the protection at the hardware level can be approached without increasing the complexity of the devices. The interplay between the spin-orbit coupling and the Zeeman splitting in the semiconductor allows us to tune the Josephson coupling in terms of the spin degree of freedom of Cooper pairs, the hallmark of the superconducting spintronics. This leads to the implementation of the parity-protected 0-$π$ superconducting qubit with only one highly transparent superconductor-semiconductor Josephson junction, which makes our proposal immune from the various fabrication imperfections.

Circuit QED simulator of two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Hegger model: magnetic field induced topological phase transition in high-order topological insulators

High-order topological insulator (HOTI) occupies an important position in topological band theory due to its exotic bulk-edge correspondence. Recently, it has been predicted that external magnetic field can introduce rich physics into two-dimensional (2D) HOTIs. However, up to now the theoretical description is still incomplete and the experimental realization is still lacking. Here we investigate the influence of continuously varying magnetic field on 2D Su-Schriffer-Heeger lattice, which is one of the most celebrated HOTI models, and proposed a corresponding circuit quantum electrodynamics (cQED) simulator. Our numerical calculation shows that the zero energy corner modes (ZECMs), which can serve as evidence of the high order topology of the lattice, exhibit exotic and rich dependence on the imposed magnetic field and the inhomogeneous hopping strength. Moreover, by exploiting the parametric conversion method, we can establish time- and site-resolved tunable hopping constants in the proposed cQED simulator, thus providing an ideal platform for simulating the magnetic field induced topological phase transitions in 2D HOTIs. Since the high-order topological phases of the proposed model can be characterized by the existence of the ZECMs on the lattice, we further investigate the corner site excitation of the lattice in the steady state limit. Our numerical results imply that the predicted topological phase transitions can be unambiguously identified by the steady-state photon number measurement of the corner sites and their few neighbors. Requiring only current level of technology, our scheme can be readily tested in experiment and may pave an alternative way towards the future investigation of HOTIs in the presence of magnetic field, disorder, and strong correlation.
