Topological photonics on superconducting quantum circuits with parametric couplings

Topological phases of matter is an exotic phenomena in modern condense matter physics, which has attracted much attention due to the unique boundary states and transport properties. Recently, this topological concept in electronic materials has been exploited in many other fields of physics. Motivated by designing and controlling the behavior of electromagnetic waves, in optical, microwave, and sound frequencies, topological photonics emerges as a rapid growing research field. Due to the flexibility and diversity of superconducting quantum circuits system, it is an promising platform to realize exotic topological phases of matter and to probe and explore topologically-protected effects in new ways. Here, we review theoretical and experimental advances of topological photonics on superconducting quantum circuits via the experimentally demonstrated parametric tunable coupling techniques, including using of the superconducting transmission line resonator, superconducting qubits, and the coupled system of them. On superconducting circuits, the flexible interactions and intrinsic nonlinearity making topological photonics in this system not only a simple photonic analog of topological effects for novel devices, but also a realm of exotic but less-explored fundamental physics.

Rich Nature of Van Hove Singularities in Kagome Superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) exhibit diverse correlated phenomena, which are intertwined with a topological electronic structure with multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi level. As the VHSs with their large density of states enhance correlation effects, it is of crucial importance to determine their nature and properties. Here, we combine polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory to directly reveal the sublattice properties of 3d-orbital VHSs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Four VHSs are identified around the M point and three of them are close to the Fermi level, with two having sublattice-pure and one sublattice-mixed nature. Remarkably, the VHS just below the Fermi level displays an extremely flat dispersion along MK, establishing the experimental discovery of higher-order VHS. The characteristic intensity modulation of Dirac cones around K further demonstrates the sublattice interference embedded in the electronic structure. The crucial insights into the electronic structure, revealed by our work, provide a solid starting point for the understanding of the intriguing correlation phenomena in the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$.

Distinct band reconstructions in kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The new two-dimensional (2D) kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ has attracted much recent attention due to the coexistence of superconductivity, charge order, topology and kagome physics. A key issue in this field is to unveil the unique reconstructed electronic structure, which successfully accommodates different orders and interactions to form a fertile ground for emergent phenomena. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) evidence for two distinct band reconstructions in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. The first one is characterized by the appearance of new electron energy band at low temperature. The new band is theoretically reproduced when the three dimensionality of the charge order is considered for a band-folding along the out-of-plane direction. The second reconstruction is identified as a surface induced orbital-selective shift of the electron energy band. Our results provide the first evidence for the three dimensionality of the charge order in single-particle spectral function, highlighting the importance of long-range out-of-plane electronic correlations in this layered kagome superconductor. They also point to the feasibility of orbital-selective control of the band structure via surface modification, which would open a new avenue for manipulating exotic phenomena in this system, including superconductivity.

Charge-order-assisted topological surface states and flat bands in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$

The diversity of emergent phenomena in quantum materials often arises from the interplay between different physical energy scales or broken symmetries. Cooperative interactions among them are rare; however, when they do occur, they often stabilize fundamentally new ground states or phase behaviors. For instance, a pair density wave can form when the superconducting order parameter borrows spatial periodical variation from charge order; a topological superconductor can arise when topologically nontrivial electronic states proximitize with or participate in the formation of the superconducting condensate. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence for a unique synergy of topology and correlation effects in the kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ - one where topologically nontrivial surface states are pushed below the Fermi energy (E$_F$) by charge order, making the topological physics active near E$_F$ upon entering the superconducting state. Flat bands are observed, indicating that electron correlation effects are also at play in this system. Our results reveal the peculiar electronic structure of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, which holds the potential for realizing Majorana zero modes and anomalous superconducting states in kagome lattices. They also establish CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a unique platform for exploring the cooperation between the charge order, topology, correlation effects and superconductivity.

On the families of hyperplane sections of some smooth projective varieties

In this note, we give two applications of \cite[Theorem 3.1]{Hwang}. We first study the free family $\mathcal{K}$ of hyperplane sections of the smooth hypersurface $X\subset\mathbb{P}^{n+1}$ of degree $d\ge 3$. We prove that $X$ is determined by the free family $\mathcal{K}$ if $\dim(X)\ge 4$. As an application, we deduce that for $n\ge 4$, the hyperplane section of $X$ varies maximally in the moduli space of the smooth hypersurface of degree $d\ge 3$ in $\mathbb{P}^n$. We then study the free family of hyperplane sections of the smooth projective surface $X$ with Kodaira dimension $κ(X)\ge 0$. We prove that $X$ is determined by this free family.

Origin of the Electronic Structure in Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

The accurate theoretical description of the underlying electronic structures is essential for understanding the superconducting mechanism of iron-based superconductors. Compared to bulk FeSe, the superconducting single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films exhibit a distinct electronic structure consisting of only electron Fermi pockets, due to the formation of a new band gap at the Brillouin zone (BZ) corners and an indirect band gap between the BZ center and corners. Although intensive studies have been carried out, the origin of such a distinct electronic structure and its connection to bulk FeSe remain unclear. Here we report a systematic study on the temperature evolution of the electronic structure in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A temperature-induced electronic phase transition was clearly observed at 200 K, above which the electronic structure of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films restored to that of bulk FeSe, characterized by the closing of the new band gap and the vanishing of the indirect band gap. Moreover, the interfacial charge transfer effect induced band shift of ~ 60 meV was determined for the first time. These observations not only show the first direct evidence that the electronic structure of single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films originates from bulk FeSe through a combined effect of an electronic phase transition and an interfacial charge transfer, but also provide a quantitative basis for theoretical models in describing the electronic structure and understanding the superconducting mechanism in single-layer FeSe/SrTiO3 films.

CsV$_3$Sb$_5$: a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological kagome metal with a superconducting ground state

Recently discovered alongside its sister compounds KV$_3$Sb$_5$ and RbV$_3$Sb$_5$, CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ crystallizes with an ideal kagome network of vanadium and antimonene layers separated by alkali metal ions. This work presents the electronic properties of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$, demonstrating bulk superconductivity in single crystals with a T$_{c} = 2.5$K. The normal state electronic structure is studied via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT), which categorize CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological metal. Multiple protected Dirac crossings are predicted in close proximity to the Fermi level ($E_F$), and signatures of normal state correlation effects are also suggested by a high temperature charge density wave-like instability. The implications for the formation of unconventional superconductivity in this material are discussed.

Spectroscopic Evidence of Superconductivity Pairing at 83 K in Single-Layer FeSe/SrTiO3 Films

Single-layer FeSe films grown on the SrTiO3 substrate (FeSe/STO) have attracted much attention because of their possible record-high superconducting critical temperature Tc and distinct electronic structures in iron-based superconductors. However, it has been under debate on how high its Tc can really reach due to the inconsistency of the results obtained from the transport, magnetic and spectroscopic measurements. Here we report spectroscopic evidence of superconductivity pairing at 83 K in single-layer FeSe/STO films. By preparing high-quality single-layer FeSe/STO films, we observe for the first time strong superconductivity-induced Bogoliubov back-bending bands that extend to rather high binding energy ~100 meV by high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements. The Bogoliubov back-bending band provides a new definitive benchmark of superconductivity pairing that is directly observed up to 83 K in the single-layer FeSe/STO films. Moreover, we find that the superconductivity pairing state can be further divided into two temperature regions of 64-83 K and below 64 K. We propose the 64-83 K region may be attributed to superconductivity fluctuation while the region below 64 K corresponds to the realization of long-range superconducting phase coherence. These results indicate that either Tc as high as 83 K is achievable in iron-based superconductors, or there is a pseudogap formation from superconductivity fluctuation in single-layer FeSe/STO films.

Weibo-COV: A Large-Scale COVID-19 Social Media Dataset from Weibo

With the rapid development of COVID-19 around the world, people are requested to maintain "social distance" and "stay at home". In this scenario, extensive social interactions transfer to cyberspace, especially on social media platforms like Twitter and Sina Weibo. People generate posts to share information, express opinions and seek help during the pandemic outbreak, and these kinds of data on social media are valuable for studies to prevent COVID-19 transmissions, such as early warning and outbreaks detection. Therefore, in this paper, we release a novel and fine-grained large-scale COVID-19 social media dataset collected from Sina Weibo, named Weibo-COV, contains more than 40 million posts ranging from December 1, 2019 to April 30, 2020. Moreover, this dataset includes comprehensive information nuggets like post-level information, interactive information, location information, and repost network. We hope this dataset can promote studies of COVID-19 from multiple perspectives and enable better and rapid researches to suppress the spread of this pandemic.

On projective 3-folds of general type with small positive geometric genus

In this paper we study pluricanonical maps of minimal projective 3-folds of general type with geometric genus $1$, $2$ and $3$. We go in the direction pioneered by Enriques and Bombieri, and other authors, pinning down, for low projective genus, a finite list of exceptions to the birationality of some pluricanonical map. In particular, apart from a finite list of weighted baskets, we prove the birationality of $φ_{16}$, $φ_{6}$ and $φ_{5}$ respectively.

Multi-task Learning for Low-resource Second Language Acquisition Modeling

Second language acquisition (SLA) modeling is to predict whether second language learners could correctly answer the questions according to what they have learned. It is a fundamental building block of the personalized learning system and has attracted more and more attention recently. However, as far as we know, almost all existing methods cannot work well in low-resource scenarios due to lacking of training data. Fortunately, there are some latent common patterns among different language-learning tasks, which gives us an opportunity to solve the low-resource SLA modeling problem. Inspired by this idea, in this paper, we propose a novel SLA modeling method, which learns the latent common patterns among different language-learning datasets by multi-task learning and are further applied to improving the prediction performance in low-resource scenarios. Extensive experiments show that the proposed method performs much better than the state-of-the-art baselines in the low-resource scenario. Meanwhile, it also obtains improvement slightly in the non-low-resource scenario.

Non-Abelian Aharonov-Bohm Caging in Photonic Lattices

Aharonov-Bohm (AB) caging is the localization effect in translational-invariant lattices due to destructive interference induced by penetrated magnetic fields. While current research focuses mainly on the case of Abelian AB caging, here we go beyond and develop the non-Abelian AB caging concept by considering the particle localization in a 1D multi-component rhombic lattice with non-Abelian background gauge field. In contrast to its Abelian counterpart, the non-Abelian AB cage depends on both the form of the nilpotent interference matrix and the initial state of the lattice. This phenomena is the consequence of the non-Abelian nature of the gauge potential and thus has no Abelian analog. We further propose a circuit quantum electrodynamics realization of the proposed physics, in which the required non-Abelian gauge field can be synthesized by the parametric conversion method, and the non-Abelian AB caging can be unambiguously demonstrated through the pumping and the steady-state measurements of only a few sites on the lattice. Requiring only currently available technique, our proposal can be readily tested in experiment and may pave a new route towards the investigation of exotic photonic quantum fluids.

On the Rost divisibility of henselian discrete valuation fields of cohomological dimension 3

Let $F$ be a field, $\ell$ a prime and $D$ a central division $F$-algebra of $\ell$-power degree. By the Rost kernel of $D$ we mean the subgroup of $F^*$ consisting of elements $λ$ such that the cohomology class $(D)\cup (λ)\in H^3(F,\,\mathbb{Q}_{\ell}/\mathbb{Z}_{\ell}(2))$ vanishes. In 1985, Suslin conjectured that the Rost kernel is generated by $i$-th powers of reduced norms from $D^{\otimes i},\,\forall i\ge 1$. Despite of known counterexamples, we prove some new cases of Suslin's conjecture. We assume $F$ is a henselian discrete valuation field with residue field $k$ of characteristic different from $\ell$. When $D$ has period $\ell$, we show that Suslin's conjecture holds if either $k$ is a $2$-local field or the cohomological $\ell$-dimension $\mathrm{cd}_{\ell}(k)$ of $k$ is $\le 2$. When the period is arbitrary, we prove the same result when $k$ itself is a henselian discrete valuation field with $\mathrm{cd}_{\ell}(k)\le 2$. In the case $\ell=\text{char}(k)$ an analog is obtained for tamely ramified algebras. We conjecture that Suslin's conjecture holds for all fields of cohomological dimension 3.

Out-of-time-order correlators and quantum phase transitions in the Rabi and Dicke model

The out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) is used to study the quantum phase transitions (QPTs) between the normal phase and the superradiant phase in the Rabi and few-body Dicke models with large frequency ratio of theatomic level splitting to the single-mode electromagnetic radiation field frequency. The focus is on the OTOC thermally averaged with infinite temperature, which is an experimentally feasible quantity. It is shown that thecritical points can be identified by long-time averaging of the OTOC via observing its local minimum behavior. More importantly, the scaling laws of the OTOC for QPTs are revealed by studying the experimentally accessible conditions with finite frequency ratio and finite number of atoms in the studied models. The critical exponents extracted from the scaling laws of OTOC indicate that the QPTs in the Rabi and Dicke models belong to the same universality class.

Spectroscopic evidence for electron-boson coupling in electron-doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

The pseudogap, d-wave superconductivity and electron-boson coupling are three intertwined key ingredients in the phase diagram of the cuprates. Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ is a 5d-electron counterpart of the cuprates in which both the pseudogap and a d-wave instability have been observed. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the third key player in electron-doped Sr$_2$IrO$_4$: electron-boson coupling. A kink in nodal dispersion is observed with an energy scale of ~50 meV. The strength of the kink changes with doping, but the energy scale remains the same. These results provide the first noncuprate platform for exploring the relationship between the pseudogap, d-wave instability and electron-boson coupling in doped Mott insulators.

Universal gapless Dirac cone and tunable topological states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures

In the newly discovered magnetic topological insulator MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, both axion insulator state and quantized anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) have been observed by tuning the magnetic structure. The related (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures with increased tuning knobs, are predicted to be a more versatile platform for exotic topological states. Here, we report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies on a series of the heterostructures (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ and MnBi$_6$Te$_{10}$). A universal gapless Dirac cone is observed at the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ terminated (0001) surfaces in all systems. This is in sharp contrast to the expected gap from the original antiferromagnetic ground state, indicating an altered magnetic structure near the surface, possibly due to the surface termination. In the meantime, the electron band dispersion of the surface states, presumably dominated by the top surface, is found to be sensitive to different stackings of the underlying MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and Bi$_2$Te$_3$ layers. Our results suggest the high tunability of both magnetic and electronic structures of the topological surface states in (MnBi$_2$Te$_4$)$_m$(Bi$_2$Te$_3$)$_n$ heterostructures, which is essential in realizing various novel topological states.

Deep Cross-Modal Hashing with Hashing Functions and Unified Hash Codes Jointly Learning

Due to their high retrieval efficiency and low storage cost, cross-modal hashing methods have attracted considerable attention. Generally, compared with shallow cross-modal hashing methods, deep cross-modal hashing methods can achieve a more satisfactory performance by integrating feature learning and hash codes optimizing into a same framework. However, most existing deep cross-modal hashing methods either cannot learn a unified hash code for the two correlated data-points of different modalities in a database instance or cannot guide the learning of unified hash codes by the feedback of hashing function learning procedure, to enhance the retrieval accuracy. To address the issues above, in this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end Deep Cross-Modal Hashing with Hashing Functions and Unified Hash Codes Jointly Learning (DCHUC). Specifically, by an iterative optimization algorithm, DCHUC jointly learns unified hash codes for image-text pairs in a database and a pair of hash functions for unseen query image-text pairs. With the iterative optimization algorithm, the learned unified hash codes can be used to guide the hashing function learning procedure; Meanwhile, the learned hashing functions can feedback to guide the unified hash codes optimizing procedure. Extensive experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art cross-modal hashing methods.

Interplay between non-Hermiticity and non-Abelian gauge potential in topological photonics

Topological phases in spinless non-Hermitian models have been widely studied both theoretically and experimentally in some artificial materials using photonics, phononics and magnon. In this work, we investigate the interplay between non-Hermitian loss and gain and non-Abelian gauge potential realized in a two-component superconducting circuit. In our model, the non-Hermiticity along only gives rise to trivial gain and loss to the states; while the non-Abelian gauge along gives rise to flying butterfly spectra and associated edge modes, which in photonics can be directly measured by the intensity of photons at the boundaries. These two terms do not commute, and their interplay can give rise to several intriguing non-Hermitian phases, including the fully gapped quantum spin Hall (QSH) phase, gapless QSH phase, trivial gapped phase and gapless metallic phase. The bulk-edge correspondence is absent and we find that during the closing of energy gap in the gapped QSH phase, the system enters the gapless QSH phase regime which still supports two counter-propagating edge modes. We have also unveiled the intriguing role of non-Hermiticity on the chiral symmetry and time-reversal symmetry of the Hermitian models, which can be applied to other physical models.
