Cramér-Rao Bound Minimization for Flexible Intelligent Metasurface-Enabled ISAC Systems

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) have been widely recognized as a key enabler for future wireless networks, where the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) plays a central role in quantifying sensing accuracy. In this paper, we present the first study on CRB minimization in flexible intelligent metasurface (FIM)-enabled ISAC systems.Specifically, we first derive an average CRB expression that explicitly depends on FIM surface shape and demonstrate that array reconfigurability can substantially reduce the CRB, thereby significantly enhancing sensing performance. Moreover, to tackle the challenging CRB minimization problem, we adopt average Fisher information maximization as a surrogate objective and use the Gauss-Hermite quadrature method to obtain an explicit approximation of the objective function. The resulting problem is then decoupled into three subproblem, i.e., beamforming optimization and transmit/receive FIM surface shape optimization. For beamforming optimization, we employ the Schur complement and penalty-based semi-definite relaxation (SDR) technique to solve it.Furthermore, we propose a fixed-point equation method and a projected gradient algorithm to optimize the surface shapes of the receive and transmit FIMs, respectively.Simulation results demonstrate that, compared to rigid arrays, surface shaping of both transmit and receive FIMs can significantly reduce the average sensing CRB while maintaining communication quality, and remains effective even in multi-target scenarios.

Dual-Mapping Sparse Vector Transmission for Short Packet URLLC

Sparse vector coding (SVC) is a promising short-packet transmission method for ultra reliable low latency communication (URLLC) in next generation communication systems. In this paper, a dual-mapping SVC (DM-SVC) based short packet transmission scheme is proposed to further enhance the transmission performance of SVC. The core idea behind the proposed scheme lies in mapping the transmitted information bits onto sparse vectors via block and single-element sparse mappings. The block sparse mapping pattern is able to concentrate the transmit power in a small number of non-zero blocks thus improving the decoding accuracy, while the single-element sparse mapping pattern ensures that the code length does not increase dramatically with the number of transmitted information bits. At the receiver, a two-stage decoding algorithm is proposed to sequentially identify non-zero block indexes and single-element non-zero indexes. Extensive simulation results verify that proposed DM-SVC scheme outperforms the existing SVC schemes in terms of block error rate and spectral efficiency.

Efficient Beamforming for Discrete SIM-Aided Multiuser Systems Under Statistical CSI

Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces (SIM) have emerged as a revolutionary architecture for next-generation wireless communications, offering wave-domain signal processing capabilities with significantly reduced hardware complexity compared to conventional systems. However, most existing SIM research assumes continuous phase shifts and perfect instantaneous channel state information (CSI), which are impractical due to hardware discrete phase shift constraints and prohibitive pilot overhead. This paper presents a joint power allocation and discrete phase shift optimization framework for SIM-aided multiuser multiple-input single-output(MISO) downlink systems under statistical CSI. We formulate the achievable sum rate maximization problem considering practical discrete phase constraints and derive a closed-form expression for the average achievable rate under statistical CSI. To tackle the resulting non-convex optimization problem, we decouple the problem by using the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) algorithm and alternating optimization (AO). Subsequently, we utilize the Lagrangian multiplier method and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to obtain closed-form iterative solutions. Our simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm reduces computational complexity by a factor of 50 compared to semi-definite relaxation (SDR) methods, , while maintaining over 85% of the continuous phase shift performance with only 1-bit quantization, highlighting its feasibility for low-cost hardware systems.

Rydberg Atomic Quantum Receivers for Classical Wireless Communications and Sensing: Their Models and Performance

The significant progress of quantum sensing technologies offer numerous radical solutions for measuring a multitude of physical quantities at an unprecedented precision. Among them, Rydberg atomic quantum receivers (RAQRs) emerge as an eminent solution for detecting the electric field of radio frequency (RF) signals, exhibiting great potential in assisting classical wireless communications and sensing. So far, most experimental studies have aimed for the proof of physical concepts to reveal its promise, while the practical signal model of RAQR-aided wireless communications and sensing remained under-explored. Furthermore, the performance of RAQR-based wireless receivers and their advantages over classical RF receivers have not been fully characterized. To fill these gaps, we introduce the RAQR to the wireless community by presenting an end-to-end reception scheme. We then develop a corresponding equivalent baseband signal model relying on a realistic reception flow. Our scheme and model provide explicit design guidance to RAQR-aided wireless systems. We next study the performance of RAQR-aided wireless systems based on our model, and compare them to classical RF receivers. The results show that Doppler broadening-free RAQRs are capable of achieving a substantial received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of over $27$ decibel (dB) and $40$ dB in the photon shot limit and standard quantum limit regimes, respectively.

Low-Complexity Channel Estimation for Internet of Vehicles AFDM Communications With Sparse Bayesian Learning

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) has been considered as a promising waveform to enable high-reliable connectivity in the internet of vehicles. However, accurate channel estimation is critical and challenging to achieve the expected performance of the AFDM systems in doubly-dispersive channels. In this paper, we propose a sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) framework for AFDM systems and develop a dynamic grid update strategy with two off-grid channel estimation methods, i.e., grid-refinement SBL (GR-SBL) and grid-evolution SBL (GE-SBL) estimators. Specifically, the GR-SBL employs a localized grid refinement method and dynamically updates grid for a high-precision estimation. The GE-SBL estimator approximates the off-grid components via first-order linear approximation and enables gradual grid evolution for estimation accuracy enhancement. Furthermore, we develop a distributed computing scheme to decompose the large-dimensional channel estimation model into multiple manageable small-dimensional sub-models for complexity reduction of GR-SBL and GE-SBL, denoted as distributed GR-SBL (D-GR-SBL) and distributed GE-SBL (D-GE-SBL) estimators, which also support parallel processing to reduce the computational latency. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed channel estimators outperform existing competitive schemes. The GR-SBL estimator achieves high-precision estimation with fine step sizes at the cost of high complexity, while the GE-SBL estimator provides a better trade-off between performance and complexity. The proposed D-GR-SBL and D-GE-SBL estimators effectively reduce complexity and maintain comparable performance to GR-SBL and GE-SBL estimators, respectively.

Efficient Resource Allocation for Multi-User and Multi-Target MIMO-OFDM Underwater ISAC

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) technology is crucial for next-generation underwater networks. However, covering multiple users and targets and balancing sensing and communication performance in complex underwater acoustic (UWA) environments remains challenging. This paper proposes an interleaved orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-based MIMO UWA-ISAC system, which employs a horizontal array to simultaneously transmit adaptive waveforms for downlink multi-user communication and omnidirectional target sensing. A multi-objective optimization framework is formulated to maximize the product of communication rate and range (PRR) while ensuring sensing performance and peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) constraints. To solve this mixed-integer nonconvex problem, a two-dimensional grouped random search algorithm is developed, efficiently exploring subcarrier interleaved patterns and resource allocation schemes. Numerical simulations under real-world UWA channels demonstrate the designed system's superiority and effectiveness: our algorithm achieves 90% faster convergence than conventional exhaustive search with only a marginal 0.5 kbps km PRR degradation. Furthermore, the proposed resource allocation scheme maintains robustness beyond the baseline allocation schemes under stringent PRR and PAPR constraints.

Enhanced Information Security via Wave-Field Selectivity and Structured Wavefront Manipulation

In this paper, we propose a novel secure wireless transmission architecture that enables the co-existence of spatial field modulation (SFM) and digital bandpass modulation (DBM), utilizing multi-mode vortex waves and programmable meta-surfaces (PMS). Distinct from conventional joint modulation schemes, our approach establishes two logically independent transmission channels--SFM and DBM--thereby eliminating the need for joint signal design or time synchronization. Specifically, the orthogonality of vortex wave modes is exploited to construct a high-capacity multi-mode DBM channel, in which each mode carries modulated symbols independently. As the composite waveform passes through the PMS, energy from different vortex modes is spatially focused onto distinct positions, dynamically determined by the PMS configuration. This spatial mapping forms a unique lookup table that encodes additional information in the electro-magnetic (EM) field distribution, effectively enabling a second, concurrent SFM channel. To enhance physical-layer security, the DBM channel transmits encrypted symbols transformed via dynamic symbol-domain mapping, while the corresponding mapping relations--or key information--are carried by the SFM channel. This lightweight dual-channel encryption strategy provides strong confidentiality without requiring complex joint decoding. To validate the feasibility of the proposed architecture, we design and implement a proof-of-concept prototype system, and conduct experimental demonstrations under real-world wireless communication conditions. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the co-existent DBM-SFM design in achieving reliable and secure transmission. The proposed architecture offers a scalable, low-complexity, and secure transmission solution for future IoT networks, especially in scenarios demanding both spectral efficiency and physical-layer confidentiality.

FAS-RSMA: Can Fluid Antennas Elevate RSMA Performance?

As 6G networks demand massive connectivity and stronger interference control, rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) is attractive because it superposes a common stream and user-private streams and remains effective under imperfect CSIT and heterogeneous traffic. In practical multiuser deployments, two considerations arise: the common stream decoding constraint imposed by the weakest user, and residual inter-user interference can remain non-negligible, particularly in single-input single-output (SISO) broadcast settings and under an imperfect CSIT scenario. Motivated by prior advances of RSMA research, we investigate a complementary mechanism-fluid antenna systems (FAS), with dynamic port reconfiguration supplies adaptive spatial selectivity without altering the RSMA signaling structure. Can FAS help alleviate these considerations and enhance RSMA performance? We develop a tractable correlation-aware analytical framework based on block-correlation models, including constant block correlation (CBC) and variable block correlation (VBC), to capture realistic spatial dependence among ports. Closed-form expressions are derived for outage probability (OP) and average capacity (AC), revealing how port reconfiguration strengthens the weakest effective channel and improves SINR through higher channel gains and lower relative noise impact. Monte Carlo simulations verify the analysis and show that VBC matches simulations more tightly than CBC across all port configurations. Finally, FAS-RSMA provides clear gains over conventional antenna systems and NOMA, achieving lower OP and higher AC by combining RSMA interference management with FAS spatial diversity.

Network-Centric Anomaly Filtering and Spoofer localization for 5G-NR Localization in LAWNs

This paper investigates security vulnerabilities and countermeasures for the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Fifth Generation New Radio (5G-NR) Time Difference of Arrival (TDoA)-based unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) localization in low-altitude urban environments. We first optimize node selection strategies under Air to Ground (A2G) channel conditions, proving that optimal selection depends on UAV altitude and deployment density, and propose lightweight User Equipment (UE)-assisted approaches that reduce overhead while enhancing accuracy. Next, we then expose critical security vulnerabilities by introducing merged-peak spoofing attacks where rogue UAVs transmit multiple 5G-NR Positioning Reference Signalss (PRSs) that merge with legitimate signals, bypassing existing detection methods. Through theoretical modeling and sensitivity analysis, we quantify how synchronization quality and geometric factors determine spoofing success probability, thereby revealing fundamental weaknesses in current 3GPP positioning frameworks. To address these vulnerabilities, we design a network-centric anomaly detection framework at the Localization Management Function (LMF) using 3GPP-specified parameters, coupled with recursive gradient descent-based robust localization that filters anomalous data while estimating UAV position. Our unified framework simultaneously provides robust victim localization and spoofer localization, enabling active attacker attribution beyond passive defense. Extensive simulations validate the effectiveness of our optimization and security mechanisms for 3GPP-compliant UAV positioning.

Introducing Meta-Fiber into Stacked Intelligent Metasurfaces for MIMO Communications: A Low-Complexity Design with only Two Layers

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIMs), which integrate multiple programmable metasurface layers, have recently emerged as a promising technology for advanced wave-domain signal processing. SIMs benefit from flexible spatial degree-of-freedom (DoF) while reducing the requirement for costly radio-frequency (RF) chains. However, current state-of-the-art SIM designs face challenges such as complex phase shift optimization and energy attenuation from multiple layers. To address these aspects, we propose incorporating meta-fibers into SIMs, with the aim of reducing the number of layers and enhancing the energy efficiency. First, we introduce a meta-fiber-connected 2-layer SIM that exhibits the same flexible signal processing capabilities as conventional multi-layer structures, and explains the operating principle. Subsequently, we formulate and solve the optimization problem of minimizing the mean square error (MSE) between the SIM channel and the desired channel matrices. Specifically, by designing the phase shifts of the meta-atoms associated with the transmitting-SIM and receiving-SIM, a non-interference system with parallel subchannels is established. In order to reduce the computational complexity, a closed-form expression for each phase shift at each iteration of an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm is proposed. We show that the proposed algorithm is applicable to conventional multi-layer SIMs. The channel capacity bound and computational complexity are analyzed to provide design insights. Finally, numerical results are illustrated, demonstrating that the proposed two-layer SIM with meta-fiber achieves over a 25% improvement in channel capacity while reducing the total number of meta-atoms by 59% as compared with a conventional seven-layer SIM.

Multi-Resolution Codebook Design and Multiuser Interference Management for Discrete XL-RIS-Aided Near-Field MIMO Systems

Extremely large-scale reconfigurable intelligent surface (XL-RIS) can effectively overcome severe fading and provide higher communication performance. However, current research on XL-RIS overlooks the discrete phase-shift characteristics of RIS in practical systems, which will result in significant performance degradation. In this paper, we investigate near-field communication schemes assisted by XL-RIS with discrete phase shifts.Specifically, we propose a hierarchical beam training method to obtain the user channel state information (CSI), and develop the jointly optimized codebook construction (JOCC) method and separately optimized codebook construction (SOCC) method for base station (BS) precoding and XL-RIS phase shifts, respectively. With JOCC, the most superior beam training performance can be obtained. With SOCC, higher performance than the single-antenna BS codebook can be obtained at a similar complexity.Further, we propose a flexible multiuser interference management (IM) method that is simple to solve. The IM method uses adaptive gain matrix approximation to take into account user fairness and can be solved in closed-form iterations. In addition, we extend the proposed method to a hybrid precoding design. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed multi-resolution codebook construction method can obtain more accurate beam patterns and user CSI, and the proposed IM method obtains superior performance over the benchmark methods.

DFT-s-OFDM with Chirp Modulation

In this paper, a new waveform called discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with chirp modulation (DFT-s-OFDM-CM) is proposed for the next generation of wireless communications. The information bits are conveyed by not only Q-ary constellation symbols but also the starting frequency of chirp signal. It could maintain the benefits provided by the chirped discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM), e.g., low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), full frequency diversity exploitation, etc. Simulation results confirm that the proposed DFT-s-OFDM-CM could achieve higher spectral efficiency while keeping the similar bit error rate (BER) to that of chirped DFT-s-OFDM. In addition, when maintaining the same spectral efficiency, the proposed DFT-s-OFDM-CM with the splitting of information bits into two streams enables the use of lower-order constellation modulation and offers greater resilience to noise, resulting in a lower BER than the chirped DFT-s-OFDM.

Exploiting Movable Elements of Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Enhancement of Integrated Sensing and Communication

In this paper, we propose to exploit movable elements of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to enhance the overall performance of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) systems. Firstly, focusing on a single-user scenario, we reveal the function of movable elements by performance analysis, and then design a joint beamforming and element position optimization scheme. Further, we extend it to a general multi-user scenario, and also propose an element position optimization scheme according to the derived performance expressions. Finally, simulation results confirm that the movement of IRS elements can improve the communication rate and the sensing accuracy, and especially broaden the coverage of ISAC.

Generalized Code Index Modulation Aided AFDM for Spread Spectrum Systems

The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a new transmission waveform that has shown excellent performance in high-mobility environments, making it a sensible option for the next-generation wireless networks. In this paper, we investigate an energy-efficient generalized code index modulation scheme for AFDM by leveraging spread spectrum, referred to as GCIM-AFDM-SS, to combat the interference caused by the doubly dispersive channels. Specifically, the information bits are conveyed by the transmitted symbols as well as the indices of the selected spreading codes in our proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS scheme. To avoid extensive computations, we also develop a lowcomplexity maximal ratio combining (MRC) detector algorithm, which recovers the spreading codes first and demodulates the symbols afterwards. Moreover, an upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) of the proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS system with maximum-likelihood (ML) detection is derived. Numerical results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed GCIM-AFDM-SS system over the classical AFDM spread spectrum (AFDM-SS) and the existing index modulated AFDM (IM-AFDM) systems.

Ambiguity Function Analysis of AFDM Signals for Integrated Sensing and Communications

Affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) is a promising chirp-based waveform with high flexibility and resilience, making it well-suited for next-generation wireless networks, particularly in high-mobility scenarios. In this paper, we investigate the ambiguity functions (AFs) of AFDM signals, which fundamentally characterize their range and velocity estimation capabilities in both monostatic and bistatic settings. Specifically, we first derive the auto-ambiguity function (AAF) of an AFDM chirp subcarrier, revealing its "spike-like" local property and "periodic-like" global property along the rotated delay and Doppler dimensions. This structure naturally forms a parallelogram for each localized pulse of the AAF of the AFDM chirp subcarrier, enabling unambiguous target sensing. Then, we study the cross-ambiguity function (CAF) between two different AFDM chirp subcarriers, which exhibits the same local and global properties as the AAF but with an additional shift along the Doppler dimension. We then extend our analysis to the AF of various typical AFDM frames, considering both deterministic pilot and random data symbols. In particular, we demonstrate that inserting guard symbols in AFDM facilitates interference-free sensing. Simulation results validate our theoretical findings, highlighting AFDM's strong potential for ISAC applications.

Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing Over Wideband Doubly-Dispersive Channels With Time-Scaling Effects

The recently proposed affine frequency division multiplexing (AFDM) modulation has been considered as a promising technology for narrowband doubly-dispersive channels. However, the time-scaling effects, i.e., pulse widening and pulse shortening phenomena, in extreme wideband doubly-dispersive channels have not been considered in the literatures. In this paper, we investigate such wideband transmission and develop an efficient transmission structure with chirp-periodic prefix (CPP) and chirp-periodic suffix (CPS) for AFDM system. We derive the input-output relationship of AFDM system under time-scaled wideband doubly-dispersive channels and demonstrate the sparsity in discrete affine Fourier (DAF) domain equivalent channels. We further optimize the AFDM chirp parameters to accommodate the time-scaling characteristics in wideband doubly-dispersive channels and verify the superiority of the derived chirp parameters by pairwise error probability (PEP) analysis. We also develop an efficient cross domain distributed orthogonal approximate message passing (CD-D-OAMP) algorithm for AFDM symbol detection and analyze its corresponding state evolution. By analyzing the detection complexity of CD-D-OAMP detector and evaluating the error performance of AFDM systems based on simulations, we demonstrate that the AFDM system with our optimized chirp parameters outperforms the existing competitive modulation schemes in time-scaled wideband doubly-dispersive channels. Moreover, our proposed CD-D-OAMP detector can achieve the desirable trade-off between the complexity and performance, while supporting parallel computing to significantly reduce the computational latency.

Pinching-Antenna-Assisted Index Modulation: Channel Modeling, Transceiver Design, and Performance Analysis

In this paper, a novel pinching-antenna assisted index modulation (PA-IM) scheme is proposed for improving the spectral efficiency without increasing the hardware complexity, where the information bits are conveyed not only by the conventional M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols but also by the indices of pinching antenna (PA) position patterns. To realize the full potential of this scheme, this paper focuses on the comprehensive transceiver design, addressing key challenges in signal detection at the receiver and performance optimization at thetransmitter. First, a comprehensive channel model is formulated for this architecture, which sophisticatedly integrates the deterministic in-waveguide propagation effects with the stochastic nature of wireless channels, including both largescale path loss and small-scale fading. Next, to overcome the prohibitive complexity of optimal maximum likelihood (ML) detection, a low-complexity box-optimized sphere decoding (BOSD) algorithm is designed, which adaptively prunes the search space whilst preserving optimal ML performance. Furthermore, an analytical upper bound on the bit error rate (BER) is derived and validated by the simulations. Moreover, a new transmit precoding method is designed using manifold optimization, which minimizes the BER by jointly optimizing the complex-valued precoding coefficients across the waveguides for the sake of maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance of all received signal points. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed PA-IM scheme attains a significant performance gain over its conventional counterparts and that the overall BER of the pinching-antenna system is substantially improved by the proposed precoding design.

Basis Expansion Extrapolation based Long-Term Channel Prediction for Massive MIMO OTFS Systems

Massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) combined with orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation has emerged as a promising technique for high-mobility scenarios. However, its performance could be severely degraded due to channel aging caused by user mobility and high processing latency. In this paper, an integrated scheme of uplink (UL) channel estimation and downlink (DL) channel prediction is proposed to alleviate channel aging in time division duplex (TDD) massive MIMO-OTFS systems. Specifically, first, an iterative basis expansion model (BEM) based UL channel estimation scheme is proposed to accurately estimate UL channels with the aid of carefully designed OTFS frame pattern. Then a set of Slepian sequences are used to model the estimated UL channels, and the dynamic Slepian coefficients are fitted by a set of orthogonal polynomials. A channel predictor is derived to predict DL channels by iteratively extrapolating the Slepian coefficients. Simulation results verify that the proposed UL channel estimation and DL channel prediction schemes outperform the existing schemes in terms of normalized mean square error of channel estimation/prediction and DL spectral efficiency, with less pilot overhead.
