Efficient Hybrid Beamforming with Anti-Blockage Design for High-Speed Railway Communications

Future railway is expected to accommodate both train operation services and passenger broadband services. The millimeter wave (mmWave) communication is a promising technology in providing multi-gigabit data rates to onboard users. However, mmWave communications suffer from severe propagation attenuation and vulnerability to blockage, which can be very challenging in high-speed railway (HSR) scenarios. In this paper, we investigate efficient hybrid beamforming (HBF) design for train-to-ground communications. First, we develop a two-stage HBF algorithm in blockage-free scenarios. In the first stage, the minimum mean square error method is adopted for optimal hybrid beamformer design with low complexity and fast convergence; in the second stage, the orthogonal matching pursuit method is utilized to approximately recover the analog and digital beamformers. Second, in blocked scenarios, we design an anti-blockage scheme by adaptively invoking the proposed HBF algorithm, which can efficiently deal with random blockages. Extensive simulation results are presented to show the sum rate performance of the proposed algorithms under various configurations, including transmission power, velocity of the train, blockage probability, etc. It is demonstrated that the proposed anti-blockage algorithm can improve the effective rate by 20% in severely-blocked scenarios while maintaining low outage probability.

Sub-Channel Allocation for Device-to-Device Underlaying Full-Duplex mmWave Small Cells using Coalition Formation Games

The small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) have been utilized extensively for the fifth generation (5G) mobile networks. And full-duplex (FD) communications become possible with the development of self-interference (SI) cancellation technology. In this paper, we focus on the optimal allocation of the sub-channels in the small cells deployed densely underlying the mmWave networks. In order to improve the resource utilization and network capacity, device-to-device (D2D) communications are adopted in networks. For maximizing the system throughput, we propose a cooperative sub-channel allocation approach based on coalition formation game, and theoretically prove the convergence of the proposed allocation algorithm. The utility of the coalition formation game is closely related to the sum system throughput in this paper, and each link makes an individual decision to leave or join any coalition based on the principle of maximizing the utility. Besides, a threshold of the minimum transmission rate is given to improve the system fairness. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that our proposed scheme has a near-optimal performance on sum throughput. In addition, we verify the low complexity of the proposed scheme by simulating the number of switch operations.

Energy-Efficient Power Control of Train-ground mmWave Communication for High Speed Trains

High speed train system has proven to be a very flexible and attractive system that can be developed under various circumstances and in different contexts and cultures. As a result, high speed trains are widely deployed around the world. Providing more reliable and higher data rate communication services for high speed trains has become one of the most urgent challenges. With vast amounts of spectrum available, the millimeter wave (mmWave) system is able to provide transmission rates of several gigabits per second for high speed trains. At the same time, mmWave communication also suffers from high attenuation, thus higher energy efficiency should be considered. This paper proposes an energy efficient power control scheme of train-ground mmWave communication for high speed trains. Considering a beam switching method for efficient beam alignment, we first establish position prediction model, the realistic direction antenna model and receive power model. And then we allocate the transmission power rationally through the power minimization algorithm while ensuring the total amount of transmission data. Based on this, this paper also develops a hybrid optimization scheme and finds the limit of total energy consumption when the number of segments goes to infinity. Through simulation with various system parameters and taking velocity estimation error into account, we demonstrate the superior performance of our schemes.

Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communications in Multi-Cell Multi-Band Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with millimeter wave (mm-wave) communications are considered as a promising technology for the fifth generation mobile networks. Mm-wave has the potential to provide multiple gigabit data rate due to the broad spectrum. Unfortunately, additional free space path loss is also caused by the high carrier frequency. On the other hand, mm-wave signals are sensitive to obstacles and more vulnerable to blocking effects. To address this issue, highly directional narrow beams are utilized in mm-wave networks. Additionally, device-to-device (D2D) users make full use of their proximity and share uplink spectrum resources in HCNs to increase the spectrum efficiency and network capacity. Towards the caused complex interferences, the combination of D2D-enabled HCNs with small cells densely deployed and mm-wave communications poses a big challenge to the resource allocation problems. In this paper, we formulate the optimization problem of D2D communication spectrum resource allocation among multiple micro-wave bands and multiple mm-wave bands in HCNs. Then, considering the totally different propagation conditions on the two bands, a heuristic algorithm is proposed to maximize the system transmission rate and approximate the solutions with sufficient accuracies. Compared with other practical schemes, we carry out extensive simulations with different system parameters, and demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme. In addition, the optimality and complexity are simulated to further verify effectiveness and efficiency.

In this paper, we focus on the optimal sub-channel allocation for access and D2D links in the scenario of densely deployed multiple mmWave small cells. The problem is modeled as a coalitional game to maximize the system sum rate of access and D2D links in the system. Then we propose a coalition formation game based algorithm for sub-channel allocation. Performance evaluation results demonstrate superior performance in terms of the system sum rate compared with other practical schemes.

Coalition Game based Full-duplex Concurrent Scheduling in Millimeter Wave Wireless Backhaul Network

With the development of self-interference (SI) cancelation technology, full-duplex (FD) communication becomes possible. FD communication can theoretically double the spectral efficiency. When the time slot (TS) resources are limited and the number of flows is large, the scheduling mechanism of the flows becomes more important. Therefore, the effectiveness of FD scheduling mechanism for the flows is studied in millimeter wave wireless backhaul network with the limited TS resources. We proposed a full duplex concurrent scheduling algorithm based on coalition game (FDCG) to maximize the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. We transformed the problem of maximizing the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied into the problem of maximizing sum rate of concurrently scheduled flows in each slot. We obtained the scheduled flows with maximum sum rate in first slot by using coalition game. And then with certain restrictions, the maximum sum rate of concurrently scheduled flows can also be achieved in subsequent time slots. The simulation results show that the proposed FDCG algorithm can achieve superior performance in terms of the number of flows that meet their QoS requirements and system throughput compared with other three algorithms.

Relay-Assisted and QoS Aware Scheduling to Overcome Blockage in mmWave Backhaul Networks

In the scenario where small cells are densely deployed, the millimeter wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network has been widely used. However, mmWave is easily blocked by obstacles, and how to forward the data of the blocked flows is still a significant challenge. To ensure backhauling capacity, the quality of service (QoS) requirements of flows should be satisfied. In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimal scheduling to maximize the number of flows satisfying their QoS requirements with relays exploited to overcome blockage. To achieve a practical solution, we propose a relay-assisted and QoS aware scheduling scheme for the backhaul networks, called RAQS. It consists of a relay selection algorithm and a transmission scheduling algorithm. The relay selection algorithm selects non-repeating relays with high link rates for the blocked flows, which helps to achieve the QoS requirements of flows as soon as possible. Then, according to the results of relay selection, the transmission scheduling algorithm exploits concurrent transmissions to satisfy the QoS requirements of flows as much as possible. Extensive simulations show RAQS can effectively overcome the blockage problem, and increase the number of completed flows and network throughput compared with other schemes. In particular, the impact of relay selection parameter is also investigated to further guide the relay selection.

QoS-aware Full-duplex Concurrent Scheduling for Millimeter Wave Wireless Backhaul Networks

The development of self-interference (SI) cancelation technology makes full-duplex (FD) communication possible. Considering the quality of service (QoS) of flows in small cells densely deployed scenario with limited time slot (TS) resources, this paper introduces the FD communication into the concurrent scheduling problem of millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless backhaul network. We propose a QoS-aware FD concurrent scheduling algorithm to maximize the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied. Based on the contention graph, the algorithm makes full use of the FD condition. Both residual self-interference (RSI) and multi-user interference (MUI) are considered. Besides, it also fully considers the QoS requirements of flows and ensures the flows can be transmitted at high rates. Extensive simulations at 60GHz demonstrate that with high SI cancelation level and appropriate contention threshold, the proposed FD algorithm can achieve superior performance in terms of the number of flows with their QoS requirements satisfied and the system throughput compared with other stateof-of-the-art schemes.

Device-to-Device Communications Enabled Multicast Scheduling with the Multi-Level Codebook in mmWave Small Cells

With the exponential growth of mobile data, there are increasing interests to deploy small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands to underlay the conventional homogeneous macrocell network as well as in exploiting device-to-device (D2D) communications to improve the efficiency of the multicast service that supports content-based mobile applications. To compensate for high propagation loss in the mmWave band, high-gain directional antennas have to be employed, while it is critical to optimize multicast service in order to improve the network performance. In this paper, an efficient multicast scheduling scheme is proposed for small cells in the mmWave band, called MD2D, where both D2D communications in close proximity and multi-level antenna codebook are utilized. Specifically, a user partition and multicast path planning algorithm is proposed to partition the users in the multicast group into subsets and to determine the transmission node for each subset, so as to achieve optimal utilization of D2D communications and multi-level antenna codebook. Then a multicast scheduling algorithm schedules the transmission for each subset. Furthermore, in order to optimize the network performance, the optimal choice of user partition thresholds is analyzed. Performance evaluation demonstrate that the MD2D achieves the best performance, in terms of network throughput and energy efficiency, compared with other existing schemes. MD2D improves the network throughput compared with the second-best scheme by about 27\%.

Resource Allocation for Device-to-Device Communications Underlaying Heterogeneous Cellular Networks Using Coalitional Games

Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) with millimeter wave (mmWave) communications included are emerging as a promising candidate for the fifth generation mobile network. With highly directional antenna arrays, mmWave links are able to provide several-Gbps transmission rate. However, mmWave links are easily blocked without line of sight. On the other hand, D2D communications have been proposed to support many content based applications, and need to share resources with users in HCNs to improve spectral reuse and enhance system capacity. Consequently, an efficient resource allocation scheme for D2D pairs among both mmWave and the cellular carrier band is needed. In this paper, we first formulate the problem of the resource allocation among mmWave and the cellular band for multiple D2D pairs from the view point of game theory. Then, with the characteristics of cellular and mmWave communications considered, we propose a coalition formation game to maximize the system sum rate in statistical average sense. We also theoretically prove that our proposed game converges to a Nash-stable equilibrium and further reaches the near-optimal solution with fast convergence rate. Through extensive simulations under various system parameters, we demonstrate the superior performance of our scheme in terms of the system sum rate compared with several other practical schemes.

Mobility-aware Caching Scheduling for Fog Computing in mmWave Band

As an extension of cloud computing, fog computing at the edge of networks provides low latency, location awareness, and real-time interactions. At the same time, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are able to provide directional multi-gigabit transmission rates with large available bandwidth. Based on the user mobile trajectories in a region, several activity hotspots that users pass by frequently can be obtained. By caching popular content at the edge nodes near the hotspots, users can download the cached content directly at a short distance, and the user experience can be significantly improved. Considering multiple hotspots in a region, how to efficiently schedule the transmission for the caching at edge nodes becomes a key problem. In this paper, we focus on the problem of mobility aware transmission scheduling for caching at edge nodes near hotspots, and utilize multi-hop relaying and concurrent transmissions to achieve better performance. After formulating the optimal scheduling problem as a stochastic nonlinear mixed integer program, we propose a mobility aware caching scheduling scheme, called MHRC (Multi-Hop Relaying based Caching), where multi-hop D2D paths are established for edge nodes, and concurrent transmissions are exploited in the scheduling of caching at edge nodes. Extensive performance evaluation demonstrates MHRC achieves more than 1x higher expected cached data amount compared with state-of-the-art schemes.

Fast Two-Dimensional Atomic Norm Minimization in Spectrum Estimation and Denoising

Motivated by recent work on two dimensional (2D) harmonic component recovery via atomic norm minimization (ANM), a fast 2D direction of arrival (DOA) off-grid estimation based on ANM method was proposed. By introducing a matrix atomic norm the 2D DOA estimation problem is turned into matrix atomic norm minimization (MANM) problem. Since the 2D-ANM gridless DOA estimation is processed by vectorizing the 2D into 1D estimation and solved via semi-definite programming (SDP), which is with high computational cost in 2D processing when the number of antennas increases to large size. In order to overcome this difficulty, a detail formulation of MANM problem via SDP method is offered in this paper, the MANM method converts the original $MN+1$ dimensions problem into a $M+N$ dimensions SDP problem and greatly reduces the computational complexity. In this paper we study the problem of 2D line spectrally-sparse signal recovery from partial noiseless observations and full noisy observations, both of which can be solved efficiently via MANM method and obtain high accuracy estimation of the true 2D angles. We give a sufficient condition of the optimality condition of the proposed method and prove an up bound of the expected error rate for denoising. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to show the efficiency and performance of the proposed method, with comparisons against several existed sparse methods.

Device-to-Device Communications Enabled Energy Efficient Multicast Scheduling in mmWave Small Cells

To keep pace with the rapid growth of mobile traffic demands, dense deployment of small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands has become a promising candidate for next generation wireless communication systems. With a greatly increased data rate from huge bandwidth of mmWave communications, energy consumption should be mitigated for higher energy efficiency. Due to content popularity, many content-based mobile applications can be supported by the multicast service. mmWave communications exploit directional antennas to overcome high path loss, and concurrent transmissions can be enabled for better multicast service. On the other hand, device-to-device (D2D) communications in physical proximity should be exploited to improve multicast performance. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient multicast scheduling scheme, referred to as EMS, which utilizes both D2D communications and concurrent transmissions to achieve high energy efficiency. In EMS, a D2D path planning algorithm establishes multi-hop D2D transmission paths, and a concurrent scheduling algorithm allocates the links on the D2D paths into different pairings. Then the transmission power of links is adjusted by the power control algorithm. Furthermore, we theoretically analyze the roles of D2D communications and concurrent transmissions in reducing energy consumption. Extensive simulations under various system parameters demonstrate the superior performance of EMS in terms of energy consumption compared with the state-of-the-art schemes. Furthermore, we also investigate the choice of the interference threshold to optimize network performance.

Exploiting Multi-Hop Relaying to Overcome Blockage in Directional mmWave Small Cells

With vast amounts of spectrum available in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, small cells at mmWave frequencies densely deployed underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocell network have gained considerable interest from academia, industry, and standards bodies. Due to high propagation loss at higher frequencies, mmWave communications are inherently directional, and concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse) under low inter-link interference can be enabled to significantly improve network capacity. On the other hand, mmWave links are easily blocked by obstacles such as human body and furniture. In this paper, we develop a Multi-Hop Relaying Transmission scheme, termed as MHRT, to steer blocked flows around obstacles by establishing multi-hop relay paths. InMHRT, a relay path selection algorithmis proposed to establish relay paths for blocked flows for better use of concurrent transmissions. After relay path selection, we use a multi-hop transmission scheduling algorithm to compute near-optimal schedules by fully exploiting the spatial reuse. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and channel conditions, we demonstrate MHRT achieves superior performance in terms of network throughput and connection robustness compared with other existing protocols, especially under serious blockage conditions. The performance of MHRT with different hop limitations is also simulated and analyzed for a better choice of themaximum hop number in practice.

Energy Efficient Scheduling for mmWave Backhauling of Small Cells in Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

Heterogeneous cellular networks with small cells densely deployed underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocells are emerging as a promising candidate for the fifth generation (5G) mobile network. When a large number of base stations are deployed, the cost-effective, flexible, and green backhaul solution becomes one of the most urgent and critical challenges. With vast amounts of spectrum available, wireless backhaul in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band is able to provide several-Gbps transmission rates. To overcome high propagation loss at higher frequencies, mmWave backhaul utilize beamforming to achieve directional transmission, and concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse) under low inter-link interference can be enabled to significantly improve network capacity. To achieve an energy efficient solution for the mmWave backhauling of small cells, we first formulate the problem of minimizing the energy consumption via concurrent transmission scheduling and power control into a mixed integer nonlinear programming problem. Then we develop an energy efficient and practical mmWave backhauling scheme, where the maximum independent set based scheduling algorithm and the power control algorithm are proposed to exploit the spatial reuse for low energy consumption and high energy efficiency. We also theoretically analyze the conditions that our scheme reduces energy consumption, and the choice of the interference threshold for energy reduction. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and system parameters, we demonstrate the superior performance of our scheme in terms of energy consumption and energy efficiency, and also analyze the choice of the interference threshold under different traffic loads, BS distributions, and the maximum transmission power.

Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications to Enhance Spatial Reuse for Popular Content Downloading in Directional mmWave Small Cells

With the explosive growth of mobile demand, small cells in millimeter wave (mmWave) bands underlying the macrocell networks have attracted intense interest from both academia and industry. MmWave communications in the 60 GHz band are able to utilize the huge unlicensed bandwidth to provide multiple Gbps transmission rates. In this case, device-to-device (D2D) communications in mmWave bands should be fully exploited due to no interference with the macrocell networks and higher achievable transmission rates. In addition, due to less interference by directional transmission, multiple links including D2D links can be scheduled for concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse). With the popularity of content-based mobile applications, popular content downloading in the small cells needs to be optimized to improve network performance and enhance user experience. In this paper, we develop an efficient scheduling scheme for popular content downloading in mmWave small cells, termed PCDS (popular content downloading scheduling), where both D2D communications in close proximity and concurrent transmissions are exploited to improve transmission efficiency. In PCDS, a transmission path selection algorithm is designed to establish multi-hop transmission paths for users, aiming at better utilization of D2D communications and concurrent transmissions. After transmission path selection, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is designed to maximize the spatial reuse gain. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns, we demonstrate PCDS achieves near-optimal performance in terms of delay and throughput, and also superior performance compared with other existing protocols, especially under heavy load.

Boosting Spatial Reuse via Multiple Paths Multi-Hop Scheduling for Directional mmWave WPANs

With huge unlicensed bandwidth available in most parts of the world, millimeter wave (mmWave) communications in the 60 GHz band has been considered as one of the most promising candidates to support multi-gigabit wireless services. Due to high propagation loss of mmWave channels, beamforming is likely to become adopted as an essential technique. Consequently, transmission in 60 GHz band is inherently directional. Directivity enables concurrent transmissions (spatial reuse), which can be fully exploited to improve network capacity. In this paper, we propose a multiple paths multi-hop scheduling scheme, termed MPMH, for mmWave wireless personal area networks, where the traffic across links of low channel quality is transmitted through multiple paths of multiple hops to unleash the potential of spatial reuse. We formulate the problem of multiple paths multi-hop scheduling as a mixed integer linear program (MILP), which is generally NP-hard. To enable the implementation of the multiple paths multi-hop transmission in practice, we propose a heuristic scheme including path selection, traffic distribution, and multiple paths multi-hop scheduling to efficiently solve the formulated problem. Finally, through extensive simulations, we demonstrate MPMH achieves near-optimal network performance in terms of transmission delay and throughput, and enhances the network performance significantly compared with existing protocols.

Exploiting Device-to-Device Communications in Joint Scheduling of Access and Backhaul for mmWave Small Cells

With the explosive growth of mobile data demand, there has been an increasing interest in deploying small cells of higher frequency bands underlying the conventional homogeneous macrocell network, which is usually referred to as heterogeneous cellular networks, to significantly boost the overall network capacity. With vast amounts of spectrum available in the millimeter wave (mmWave) band, small cells at mmWave frequencies are able to provide multi-gigabit access data rates, while the wireless backhaul in the mmWave band is emerging as a cost-effective solution to provide high backhaul capacity to connect access points (APs) of the small cells. In order to operate the mobile network optimally, it is necessary to jointly design the radio access and backhaul networks. Meanwhile, direct transmissions between devices should also be considered to improve system performance and enhance the user experience. In this paper, we propose a joint transmission scheduling scheme for the radio access and backhaul of small cells in the mmWave band, termed D2DMAC, where a path selection criterion is designed to enable device-to-device transmissions for performance improvement. In D2DMAC, a concurrent transmission scheduling algorithm is proposed to fully exploit spatial reuse in mmWave networks. Through extensive simulations under various traffic patterns and user deployments, we demonstrate D2DMAC achieves near-optimal performance in some cases, and outperforms other protocols significantly in terms of delay and throughput. Furthermore, we also analyze the impact of path selection on the performance improvement of D2DMAC under different selected parameters.
