The first symbiotic stars from the LAMOST survey

Symbiotic stars are interacting binary systems with the longest orbital periods. They are typically formed by a white dwarf, a red giant and a nebula. These objects are natural astrophysical laboratories for studying the evolution of binaries. Current estimates of the population of Milky Way symbiotic stars vary from 3000 up to 400000. However, the current census is less than 300. The Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey can obtain hundreds of thousands of stellar spectra per year, providing a good opportunity to search for new symbiotic stars. In this work we detect 4 of such binaries among 4,147,802 spectra released by the LAMOST, of which two are new identifications. The first is LAMOST J12280490-014825.7, considered to be an S-type halo symbiotic star. The second is LAMOST J202629.80+423652.0, a D-type symbiotic star.

Spectral classification of stars based on LAMOST spectra

In this work, we select the high signal-to-noise ratio spectra of stars from the LAMOST data andmap theirMK classes to the spectral features. The equivalentwidths of the prominent spectral lines, playing the similar role as the multi-color photometry, form a clean stellar locus well ordered by MK classes. The advantage of the stellar locus in line indices is that it gives a natural and continuous classification of stars consistent with either the broadly used MK classes or the stellar astrophysical parameters. We also employ a SVM-based classification algorithm to assignMK classes to the LAMOST stellar spectra. We find that the completenesses of the classification are up to 90% for A and G type stars, while it is down to about 50% for OB and K type stars. About 40% of the OB and K type stars are mis-classified as A and G type stars, respectively. This is likely owe to the difference of the spectral features between the late B type and early A type stars or between the late G and early K type stars are very weak. The relative poor performance of the automatic MK classification with SVM suggests that the directly use of the line indices to classify stars is likely a more preferable choice.

Red Clump Stars from the LAMOST data I: identification and distance

We present a sample of about 120,000 red clump candidates selected from the LAMOST DR2 catalog based on the empirical distribution model in the effective temperature vs. surface gravity plane. Although, in general, red clump stars are considered as the standard candle, they do not exactly stay in a narrow range of absolute magnitude, but may extend to more than 1 magnitude depending on their initial mass. Consequently, conventional oversimplified distance estimations with assumption of fixed luminosity may lead to systematic bias related to the initial mass or the age, which may potentially affect the study of the evolution of the Galaxy with red clump stars. We therefore employ an isochrone-based method to estimate the absolute magnitude of red clump stars from their observed surface gravities, effective temperatures, and metallicities. We verify that the estimation well removes the systematics and provide an initial mass/age independent distance estimates with accuracy less than 10%.

On the origin of the 11.3 micron unidentified infrared emission feature

The 11.3 $μ$m emission feature is a prominent member of the family of unidentified infrared emission (UIE) bands and is frequently attributed to out-of-plane bending modes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules. We have performed quantum mechanical calculations of 60 neutral PAH molecules and found that it is difficult to reconcile the observed astronomical feature with any or a mix of these PAH molecules. We have further analyzed the fitting of spectra of several astronomical objects by the NASA PAH database program and found that reasonable fittings to the observed spectra are only possible by including significant contributions from oxygen and/or magnesium containing molecules in the mix. A mixed of pure PAH molecules, even including units of different sizes, geometry and charged states, is unable to fit the astronomical spectra. Preliminary theoretical results on the vibrational spectra of simple molecules with mixed aromatic/aliphatic structures show that these structures have consistent bundles of vibrational modes and could be viable carriers of the UIE bands.

Asteroseismic based estimation of the surface gravity for the LAMOST giant stars

Asteroseismology is one of the most accurate approaches to estimate the surface gravity of a star. However, most of the data from the current spectroscopic surveys do not have asteroseismic measurements, which is very expensive and time consuming. In order to improve the spectroscopic surface gravity estimates for a large amount of survey data with the help of the small subset of the data with seismic measurements, we set up a support vector regression model for the estimation of the surface gravity supervised by 1,374 LAMOST giant stars with Kepler seismic surface gravity. The new approach can reduce the uncertainty of the estimates down to about 0.1 dex, which is better than the LAMOST pipeline by at least a factor of 2, for the spectra with signal-to-noise ratio higher than 20. Compared with the logg estimated from the LAMOST pipeline, the revised logg values provide a significantly improved match to the expected distribution of red clump and RGB stars from stellar isochrones. Moreover, even the red bump stars, which extend to only about 0.1 dex in logg, can be discriminated from the new estimated surface gravity. The method is then applied to about 350,000 LAMOST metal-rich giant stars to provide improved surface gravity estimates. In general, the uncertainty of the distance estimate based on the SVR surface gravity can be reduced to about 12% for the LAMOST data.

Accurate and efficient numerical methods for computing ground states and dynamics of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates via the nonuniform FFT

In this paper, we propose efficient and accurate numerical methods for computing the ground state and dynamics of the dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates utilising a newly developed dipole-dipole interaction (DDI) solver that is implemented with the non-uniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT) algorithm. We begin with the three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) with a DDI term and present the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) model under a strongly anisotropic confining potential. Different from existing methods, the NUFFT based DDI solver removes the singularity by adopting the spherical/polar coordinates in Fourier space in 3D/2D, respectively, thus it can achieve spectral accuracy in space and simultaneously maintain high efficiency by making full use of FFT and NUFFT whenever it is necessary and/or needed. Then, we incorporate this solver into existing successful methods for computing the ground state and dynamics of GPE with a DDI for dipolar BEC. Extensive numerical comparisons with existing methods are carried out for computing the DDI, ground states and dynamics of the dipolar BEC. Numerical results show that our new methods outperform existing methods in terms of both accuracy and efficiency.

Uniform Information Exchange in Multi-channel Wireless Ad Hoc Networks

In the information exchange problem, k packets that are initially maintained by k nodes need to be disseminated to the whole network as quickly as possible. We consider this problem in single-hop multi- channel networks of n nodes, and propose a uniform protocol that with high probability accomplishes the dissemination in O(k/F + F \cdot log n) rounds, assuming F available channels and collision detection. This result is asymptotically optimal when k is large (k \geq F^2 \cdot log n). To our knowledge, this is the first uniform protocol for information exchange in multi-channel networks.

Graphene-Silicon Layered Structures on Single-crystalline Ir(111) Thin Films

Single-crystalline transition metal films are ideal playing fields for the epitaxial growth of graphene and graphene-base materials. Graphene-silicon layered structures were successfully constructed on Ir(111) thin film on Si substrate with an yttria-stabilized zirconia buffer layer via intercalation approach. Such hetero-layered structures are compatible with current Si-based microelectronic technique, showing high promise for applications in future micro- and nano-electronic devices.

Efficient Interlayer Relaxation and Transition of Excitons in Epitaxial and Non-epitaxial MoS2/WS2 Heterostructures

Semiconductor heterostructures provide a powerful platform for the engineering of excitons. Here we report the excitonic properties of two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures that consist of monolayer MoS2 and WS2 stacked epitaxially or non-epitaxially in the vertical direction. We find similarly efficient interlayer relaxation and transition of excitons in both the epitaxial and nonepitaxial heterostructures. This is manifested by a two orders of magnitude decrease in the photoluminescence and the appearance of an extra absorption peak at low energy region. The MoS2/WS2 heterostructures show weak interlayer coupling and can essentially act as atomicscale heterojunctions with the intrinsic bandstructures of the two monolayers largely preserved. They are particularly promising for the applications that request efficient dissociation of excitons and strong light absorption, including photovoltaics, solar fuels, photodetectors, and optical modulators. Our results also indicate that 2D heterostructures promise unprecedented capabilities to engineer excitons from the atomic level without concerns of interfacial imperfection.

Teleportation-Based Quantum Computation, Extended Temperley-Lieb Diagrammatical Approach and Yang--Baxter Equation

This paper focuses on the study of topological features in teleportation-based quantum computation as well as aims at presenting a detailed review on teleportaiton-based quantum computation (Gottesman and Chuang, Nature 402, 390, 1999). In the extended Temperley-Lieb diagrammatical approach, we clearly show that such topological features bring about the fault-tolerant construction of both universal quantum gates and four-partite entangled states more intuitive and simpler. Furthermore, we describe the Yang--Baxter gate by its extended Temperley-Lieb configuration, and then study teleportation-based quantum circuit models using the Yang--Baxter gate. Moreover, we discuss the relationship between the extended Temperley-Lieb diagrammatical approach and the Yang-Baxter gate approach. With these research results, we propose a worthwhile subject, the extended Temperley-Lieb diagrammatical approach, for physicists in quantum information and quantum computation.

Determination of the Local Standard of Rest using the LSS-GAC DR1

We re-estimate the peculiar velocity of the Sun with respect to the local standard of rest using a sample of local stars within 600 pc of the Sun, selected from the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-centre (LSS-GAC). The sample consists of 94332 FGK main-sequence stars with well-determined radial velocities and atmospheric parameters. To derive the LSR, two independent analyses are applied to the data. Firstly, we determine the solar motion by comparing the observed velocity distribution to that generated with the analytic formulism of Schonrich & Binney that has been demonstrated to show excellent agreement with rigorous torus-based dynamics modelling by Binney & McMillan. Secondly, we propose that cold populations of thin disc stars, selected by applying an orbital eccentricity cut, can be directly used to determine the LSR without the need of asymmetric drift corrections. Both approaches yield consistent results of solar motion in the direction of Galactic rotation, V_sun, that are much higher than the standard value adopted hitherto, derived from Stromgren's equation. The newly deduced values of V_sun are 1-2 km/s smaller than the more recent estimates derived from the Geneva-Copenhagen Survey sample of stars in the solar neighbourhood (within 100 pc). We attribute the small difference to the presence of several well-known moving groups in the GCS sample that, fortunately, hardly affect the LSS-GAC sample. The newly derived radial and vertical components of the solar motion agree well with the previous studies. In addition, for all components of the solar motion, the values yielded by stars of different spectral types in the LSS-GAC sample are consistent with each other, suggesting that the local disk is well relaxed and that the LSR reported in the current work is robust. Our final recommended LSR is, (U,V,W)_sun = (7.01+/-0.20, 10.13+/-0.12, 4.95+/-0.09) km/s.

A Large Sample of Am Candidates from LAMOST Data Release 1

We present a sample of metallic-line star (Am) candidates from the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Data Release one (LAMOST DR1). According to the characteristic of under-abundance of calcium and overabundance of iron element of Am stars, we propose an empirical separation curve derived from line indices of Ca II K-line and iron lines we choose for low resolution spectra. 3537 Am candidates are ultimately selected from more than 30,000 stars which are classified as A-type or early-F stars by both LAMOST pipeline and visual inspection. Then we make some analysis on this sample and finally provide a list of these Am candidates with 10 relevant parameters. Comparing with other catalogues, Am candidates selected from LAMOST DR1 are much fainter on the whole. Obviously, our list is an important complementary to already known bright Am catalogues, and it offers valuable material for the research on this type of chemically peculiar stars.

Accurate and efficient computation of nonlocal potentials based on Gaussian-sum approximation

We introduce an accurate and efficient method for a class of nonlocal potential evaluations with free boundary condition, including the 3D/2D Coulomb, 2D Poisson and 3D dipolar potentials. Our method is based on a Gaussian-sum approximation of the singular convolution kernel and Taylor expansion of the density. Starting from the convolution formulation, for smooth and fast decaying densities, we make a full use of the Fourier pseudospectral (plane wave) approximation of the density and a separable Gaussian-sum approximation of the kernel in an interval where the singularity (the origin) is excluded. Hence, the potential is separated into a regular integral and a near-field singular correction integral, where the first integral is computed with the Fourier pseudospectral method and the latter singular one can be well resolved utilizing a low-order Taylor expansion of the density. Both evaluations can be accelerated by fast Fourier transforms (FFT). The new method is accurate (14-16 digits), efficient ($O(N \log N)$ complexity), low in storage, easily adaptable to other different kernels, applicable for anisotropic densities and highly parallelable.

Spectroscopic analysis of metal-poor stars from LAMOST: early results

We report on early results from a pilot program searching for metal-poor stars with LAMOST and follow-up high-resolution observation acquired with the MIKE spectrograph attached to the Magellan~II telescope. We performed detailed abundance analysis for eight objects with iron abundances [Fe/H] < -2.0, including five extremely metal-poor (EMP; [Fe/H] < -3.0) stars with two having [Fe/H] < -3.5. Among these objects, three are newly discovered EMP stars, one of which is confirmed for the first time with high-resolution spectral observations. Three program stars are regarded as carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars, including two stars with no enhancement in their neutron-capture elements, which thus possibly belong to the class of CEMP-no stars; one of these objects also exhibits significant enhancement in nitrogen, and is thus a potential carbon and nitrogen-enhanced metal-poor star. The [X/Fe] ratios of the sample stars generally agree with those reported in the literature for other metal-poor stars in the same [Fe/H] range. We also compared the abundance patterns of individual program stars with the average abundance pattern of metal-poor stars, and find only one chemically peculiar object with abundances of at least two elements (other than C and N) showing deviations larger than 0.5dex. The distribution of [Sr/Ba] versus [Ba/H] agrees that an additional nucleosynthesis mechanism is needed aside from a single r-process. Two program stars with extremely low abundances of Sr and Ba support the prospect that both main and weak r-process may have operated during the early phase of Galactic chemical evolution. The distribution of [C/N] shows that there are two groups of carbon-normal giants with different degrees of mixing. However, it is difficult to explain the observed behavior of the [C/N] of the nitrogen-enhanced unevolved stars based on current data.

Feedback-optimized Extraordinary Optical Transmission of Continuous-variable Entangled States

We report on the feedback-optimized extraordinary optical transmission of continuous-variable entangled states through a hexagonal metal-hole array. The continuous-variable entanglements from a nondegenerate optical parametric amplifier are first demonstrated to survive after a photon-plasmon-photon conversion process. By controlling the reflected light from the metal-hole array, a significant enhancement of quantum correlations has then been experimentally achieved comparing to the case of without such coherent feedback control. This result presents a useful technique to efficiently recover the substantial reflective losses in the plasmonic circuits for quantum information processing.

A Theoretical Study on the Vibrational Spectra of PAH Molecules with Aliphatic Sidegroups

The role of aliphatic side groups on the formation of astronomical unidentified infrared emission (UIE) features is investigated by applying the density functional theory (DFT) to a series of molecules with mixed aliphatic-aromatic structures. The effects of introducing various aliphatic groups to a fixed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) core (ovalene) are studied. Simulated spectra for each molecule are produced by applying a Drude profile at $T$=500 K while the molecule is kept at its electronic ground state. The vibrational normal modes are classified using a semi-quantitative method. This allows us to separate the aromatic and aliphatic vibrations and therefore provide clues to what types of vibrations are responsible for the emissions bands at different wavelengths. We find that many of the UIE bands are not pure aromatic vibrational bands but may represent coupled vibrational modes. The effects of aliphatic groups on the formation of the 8 $μ$m plateau are qua ntitatively determined. The vibrational motions of methyl ($-$CH$_3$) and methyl ene ($-$CH$_2-$) groups can cause the merging of the vibrational bands of the pa rent PAH and the forming of broad features. These results suggest that aliphatic structures can play an important role in th e UIE phenomenon.

Relative Flux Calibration of the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center

We have developed and implemented an iterative algorithm of flux calibration for the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic anti-center (LSS-GAC). For a given LSS-GAC plate, the spectra are first processed with a set of nominal spectral response curves (SRCs) and used to derive initial stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, surface gravity log\,$g$ and metallicity [Fe/H]) as well as dust reddening $E(B-V)$ of all targeted stars. For each of the sixteen spectrographs, several F-type stars of good signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) are then selected as flux standard stars for further, iterative spectral flux calibration. Comparison of spectrophotometric colours, deduced from the flux-calibrated spectra, with the photometric measurements yields average differences of 0.02$\pm$0.07 and $-$0.04$\pm$0.09\,mag for the $(g-r)$ and $(g-i)$, respectively. The relatively large negative offset in $(g-i)$ is due to the fact that we have opted not to correct for the telluric bands, most notably the atmospheric A-band in the wavelength range of $i$-band. Comparison of LSS-GAC multi-epoch observations of duplicate targets indicates that the algorithm has achieved an accuracy of about 10 per cent in relative flux calibration for the wavelength range 4000 -- 9000\,Å. The shapes of SRC deduced for the individual LAMOST spectrographs are found to vary by up to 30 per cent for a given night, and larger for different nights, indicating that the derivation of SRCs for the individual plates is essential in order to achieve accurate flux calibration for the LAMOST spectra.

The LAMOST Stellar Parameter Pipeline at Peking University --- LSP3

We introduce the LAMOST Stellar Parameter Pipeline at Peking University --- LSP3, developed and implemented for the determinations of radial velocity $V_{\rm r}$ and stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature $T_{\rm eff}$, surface gravity log\,$g$, metallicity [Fe/H]) for the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-center (LSS-GAC). We describe the algorithms of LSP3 and examine the accuracy of parameters yielded by it. The precision and accuracy of parameters yielded are investigated by comparing results of multi-epoch observations and of candidate members of open and globular clusters, with photometric calibration, as well as with independent determinations available from a number of external databases, including the PASTEL archive, the APOGEE, SDSS and RAVE surveys, as well as those released in the LAMOST DR1. The uncertainties of LSP3 parameters are characterized and quantified as a function of the spectral signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and stellar atmospheric parameters. We conclude that the current implementation of LSP3 has achieved an accuracy of 5.0\,km\,s$^{-1}$, 150\,K, 0.25\,dex, 0.15\,dex for the radial velocity, effective temperature, surface gravity and metallicity, respectively, for LSS-GAC spectra of FGK stars of SNRs per pixel higher than 10. The LSP3 has been applied to over a million LSS-GAC spectra collected hitherto. Stellar parameters yielded by the LSP3 will be released to the general public following the data policy of LAMOST, together with estimates of the interstellar extinction $E(B-V)$ and stellar distances, deduced by combining spectroscopic and multi-band photometric measurements using a variety of techniques.
