LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-centre (LSS-GAC): target selection and the first release of value-added catalogues

As a major component of the LAMOST Galactic surveys, the LAMOST Spectroscopic Survey of the Galactic Anti-centre (LSS-GAC) aims to survey a significant volume of the Galactic thin/thick discs and halo for a contiguous sky area of over 3,400 deg$^2$ centred on the Galactic anti-centre ($|b| \leq 30^{\circ}$, $150 \leq l \leq 210^{\circ}$), and obtain $λλ$3700 -- 9000 low resolution ($R \sim 1,800$) spectra for a statistically complete sample of $\sim 3$\,M stars of all colours down to a limiting magnitued of $r$ $\sim$ 17.8\,mag (to 18.5\,mag for limited fields). Together with Gaia, the LSS-GAC will yield a unique dataset to advance our understanding of the structure and assemblage history of the Galaxy, in particular its disk(s). In addition to the main survey, the LSS-GAC will also target hundreds of thousands objects in the vicinity fields of M\,31 and M\,33 and survey a significant fraction (over a million) of randomly selected very bright stars (VB; $r \le 14$ mag) in the northern hemisphere. During the Pilot and the first year Regular Surveys of LAMOST, a total of 1,042,586 [750,867] spectra of a signal to noise ratio S/N(7450Å) $\ge$ 10 [S/N(4650Å) $\ge$ 10] have been collected. In this paper, we present a detailed description of the target selection algorithm, survey design, observations and the first data release of value-added catalogues (including radial velocities, effective temperatures, surface gravities, metallicities, values of interstellar extinction, distances, proper motions and orbital parameters) of the LSS-GAC.

The velocity distribution in the solar neighbourhood from the LAMOST pilot survey

We use about 15,000 F/G nearby dwarf stars selected from the LAMOST pilot survey to map the U-V velocity distribution in the solar neighbourhood. An extreme deconvolution algorithm is applied to reconstruct an empirical multi-Gaussian model. In addition to the well known substructures, e.g., Sirius, Coma Berenices, Hyades-Pleiades over-densities, several new substructures are unveiled. A ripple-like structure from (U, V) = (-120, -5) to (103, -32)km/s is clearly seen in the U-V distribution. This structure seems associated with resonance induced by the Galactic bar, since it is extended in U while having a small dispersion in V at the same time. A ridge structure between (U, V) = (-60, 40) and (-15, 15) km/s is also found. Although similar substructures have been seen in the Hipparcos data, their origin is still unclear. Another compact over-density is seen at (U, V) = (-102, -24). With this large data sample, we find that the substructure located at V~70 km/s and the Arcturus group are essentially parallel in V, which may indicate that they originate from an unrelaxed disk component perturbed by the rotating bar.

On the viability of the PAH model as an explanation of the unidentified infrared emission features

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules are widely considered as the preferred candidate for the carrier of the unidentified infrared emission bands observed in the interstellar medium and circumstellar envelopes. In this paper we report the result of fitting a variety of non-PAH spectra (silicates, hydrogenated amorphous carbon, coal and even artificial spectra) using the theoretical infrared spectra of PAHs from the NASA Ames PAH IR Spectroscopic Database. We show that these non-PAH spectra can be well fitted by PAH mixtures. This suggest that a general match between astronomical spectra and those of PAH mixtures does not necessarily provide definitive support for the PAH hypothesis.

Computing the ground state and dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonlocal interactions via the nonuniform FFT

We present efficient and accurate numerical methods for computing the ground state and dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) with nonlocal interactions based on a fast and accurate evaluation of the long-range interactions via the nonuniform fast Fourier transform (NUFFT). We begin with a review of the fast and accurate NUFFT based method in \cite{JGB} for nonlocal interactions where the singularity of the Fourier symbol of the interaction kernel at the origin can be canceled by switching to spherical or polar coordinates. We then extend the method to compute other nonlocal interactions whose Fourier symbols have stronger singularity at the origin that cannot be canceled by the coordinate transform. Many of these interactions do not decay at infinity in the physical space, which adds another layer of complexity since it is more difficult to impose the correct artificial boundary conditions for the truncated bounded computational domain. The performance of our method against other existing methods is illustrated numerically, with particular attention on the effect of the size of the computational domain in the physical space. Finally, to study the ground state and dynamics of the NLSE, we propose efficient and accurate numerical methods by combining the NUFFT method for potential evaluation with the normalized gradient flow using backward Euler Fourier pseudospectral discretization and time-splitting Fourier pseudospectral method, respectively. Extensive numerical comparisons are carried out between these methods and other existing methods for computing the ground state and dynamics of the NLSE with various nonlocal interactions. Numerical results show that our scheme performs much better than those existing methods in terms of both accuracy and efficiency.

White dwarf-main sequence binaries from LAMOST: the DR1 catalogue

Context. White dwarf-main sequence (WDMS) binaries are used to study several different important open problems in modern astrophysics. Aims. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) identified the largest catalogue of WDMS binaries currently known. However, this sample is seriously affected by selection effects and the population of systems containing cool white dwarfs and early-type companions is under-represented.Here we search for WDMS binaries within the spectroscopic data release 1 of the LAMOST (Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope) survey. LAMOST and SDSS follow different target selection algorithms. Hence, LAMOST WDMS binaries may be drawn from a different parent population and thus help in overcoming the selection effects incorporated by SDSS on the current observed population. Methods. We develop a fast and efficient routine based on the wavelet transform to identify LAMOST WDMS binaries containing a DA white dwarf and a M dwarf companion, and apply a decomposition/fitting routine to their LAMOST spectra to estimate their distances and measure their stellar parameters, namely the white dwarf effective temperatures, surface gravities and masses, and the secondary star spectral types. Results. We identify 121 LAMOST WDMS binaries, 80 of which are new discoveries, and estimate the sample to be \sim90 per cent complete. The LAMOST and SDSS WDMS binaries are found to be statistically different. However, this result is not due to the different target selection criteria of both surveys, but likely a simple consequence of the different observing conditions. Thus, the LAMOST population is found at considerably shorter distances (\sim50-450 pc) and is dominated by systems containing early-type companions and hot white dwarfs. (abridged)

Relations of stellar mass between electron temperature-based metallicity of star-forming galaxies in a wide mass range

We select 947 star-forming galaxies from SDSS-DR7 with [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$4363 emission lines detected at a signal-to-noise {ratio }larger than 5$σ$. Their electron temperatures and direct oxygen abundances are {then }determined. {W}e compare the results from different methods. $t_2${, the} electron temperature in {the }low ionization region{,} estimated from $t_3${, that} in {the }high ionization region{,} {is} compared {using} three analysis relations between $t_2-t_3${. These} show obvious differences, which result in some different ionic oxygen abundances. The results of $t_3$, $t_2$, {$\rm O^{++}$/$\rm H^+$} and {$\rm O^{+}$/$\rm H^+$} derived by using methods from IRAF and literature are also compared. The ionic abundances $\rm O^{++}$/$\rm H^+$ {are} higher than $\rm O^{+}$/$\rm H^+$ for most cases. The{ different} oxygen abundances derived from $T_{\rm e}$ and the strong-line ratios show {a }clear discrepancy, which is more obvious following increasing stellar mass and strong-line ratio $R_{23}$. The sample{ of} galaxies from SDSS {with} detected [O~{\sc iii}]$λ$4363 have lower metallicites and higher {star formation rates}, {so} they may not be typical representatives of the whole{ population of} galaxies. Adopting data objects from {Andrews \& Martini}, {Liang et al.} and {Lee et al.} data, we derive new relations of stellar mass and metallicity for star-forming galaxies in a much wider stellar mass range: from $10^6\,M_\odot$ to $10^{11}\,M_\odot$.

Figurate primes and Hilbert's 8th problem

In this paper, by using the theory of elliptic curves, we discuss several Diophantine equations related with the so-called figurate primes. Meanwhile, we raise several conjectures related with figurate primes and Hilbert's 8th problem, including Goldbach's conjecture, twin primes conjecture and Catalan's conjecture as well.

Perfect Numbers and Fibonacci Primes (II)

In this paper, we study the diophantine equation ${{σ}_{2}}(n)-{{n}^{2}}=An+B$. We prove that except for finitely many computable solutions, all the solutions to this equation with $(A,B)=({{L}_{2m}},F_{2m}^{2}-1)$ are $n={{F}_{2k+1}}{{F}_{2k+2m+1}}$, where both ${{F}_{2k+1}}$ and ${{F}_{2k+2m+1}}$ are Fibonacci primes. Meanwhile, we show that the twin primes conjecture holds if and only if the equation ${{σ}_{2}}(n)-{{n}^{2}}=2n+5$ has infinitely many solutions.

On the Metallicities of Kepler Stars

We use 12000 stars from Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) spectroscopic data to show that the metallicities of Kepler field stars as given in the Kepler Input Catalog (KIC) systematically underestimate both the true metallicity and the dynamic range of the Kepler sample. Specifically, to the first order approximation, we find [Fe/H]_KIC = -0.20 + 0.43 [Fe/H]_LAMOST, with a scatter of ~0.25 dex, due almost entirely to errors in KIC. This relation is most secure for -0.3<[Fe/H]_LAMOST<+0.4 where we have >200 comparison stars per 0.1 dex bin and good consistency is shown between metallicities determined by LAMOST and high-resolution spectra. It remains approximately valid in a slightly broader range. When the relation is inverted, the error in true metallicity as derived from KIC is (0.25 dex)/0.43~0.6 dex. We thereby quantitatively confirm the cautionary note by Brown et al. (2011) that KIC estimates of [Fe/H] should not be used by "anyone with a particular interest in stellar metallicities". Fortunately, many more LAMOST spectroscopic metallicities will be available in the near future.

The Nearest High-Velocity Stars Revealed by LAMOST Data Release 1

We report the discovery of 28 candidate high-velocity stars (HVSs) at heliocentric distances of less than 3 kpc, based on the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) Data Release 1. Our sample of HVS candidates covers a much broader color range than the equivalent ranges discussed in previous studies and comprises the first and largest sample of HVSs in the solar neighborhood. The sufficiently accurate observed and derived parameters for all candidates allow us to ascertain their nature as genuine HVSs, while a subset of 12 objects represents the most promising candidates. Our results also highlight the great potential of discovering statistically large numbers of HVSs of different spectral types in LAMOST survey data. This will ultimately enable us to achieve a better understanding of the nature of Galactic HVSs and their ejection mechanisms, and to constrain the structure of the Galaxy.

Finite-size effects on current correlation functions

We study why the calculation of current correlation functions (CCFs) still suffers from finite size effects even when the periodic boundary condition is taken. Two important one dimensional, momentum conserving systems are investigated as examples. Intriguingly, it is found that the state of a system recurs in the sense of microcanonical ensemble average, and such recurrence may result in oscillations in CCFs. Meanwhile, we find that the sound mode collisions induce an extra time decay in a current so that its correlation function decays faster (slower) in a smaller (larger) system. Based on these two unveiled mechanisms, a procedure for correctly evaluating the decay rate of a CCF is proposed, with which our analysis suggests that the global energy CCF decays as $\sim t^{-\frac{2}{3}}$ in the diatomic hard-core gas model and in a manner close to $\sim t^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ in the Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-$β$ model.

Three Moving Groups Detected in the LAMOST DR1 Archive

We analyze the kinematics of thick disk and halo stars observed by the Large sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope. We have constructed a sample of 7,993 F, G and K nearby main-sequence stars (\textit{d} $<$ 2 kpc) with estimates of position (x, y, z) and space velocity ($U$, $V$, $W$) based on color and proper motion from the SDSS DR9 catalog. Three `phase-space overdensities' are identified in [\textit{V}, $\sqrt{U^{2}+2V^{2}}$] with significance levels of $σ$ $>$ 3. %[L$_{Z}$, eccentricity], [L$_{Z}$, L$_{\bot}$], and [V$_{az}$, V$_{\triangle}E$]. Two of them (Hyades-Pleiades stream, Arcturus-AF06 stream) have been identified previously. We also find evidence for a new stream (centered at \textit{V} $\sim$ -180 km s$^{-1}$) in the halo. The formation mechanisms of these three streams are analyzed. Our results support the hypothesis the Arcturus-AF06 stream and the new stream originated from the debris of a disrupted satellite, while Hyades-Pleiades stream has a dynamical origin.

A Search for Double-peaked narrow emission line Galaxies and AGNs in the LAMOST DR1

LAMOST has released more than two million spectra, which provide the opportunity to search for double-peaked narrow emission line (NEL) galaxies and AGNs. The double-peaked narrow-line profiles can be well modeled by two velocity components, respectively blueshifted and redshifted with respect to the systemic recession velocity. This paper presents 20 double-peaked NEL galaxies and AGNs found from LAMOST DR1 using a search method based on multi-gaussian fit of the narrow emission lines. Among them, 10 have already been published by other authors, either listed as genuine double-peaked NEL objects or as asymmetric NEL objects, the remaining 10 being first discoveries. We discuss some possible origins for double-peaked narrow-line features, as interaction between jet and narrow line regions, interaction with companion galaxies and black hole binaries. Spatially resolved optical imaging and/or follow-up observations in other spectral bands are needed to further discuss the physical mechanisms at work.

Finie dimensional invariant subspace property and amenability for a class of Banach algebras

Motivated by a result of Ky Fan in 1965, we establish a characterization of a left amenable F-algebra (which includes the group algebra and the Fourier algebra of a locally compact group and quantum group algebras, or more generally the predual algebra of a Hopf von Neumann algebra) in terms of a finite dimensional invariant subspace property. This is done by first revealing a fixed point property for the semigroup of norm one positive linear func- tionals in the algebra. Our result answers an open question posted in Tokyo in 1993 by the first author (see [25, Problem 5]). We also show that the left amenability of an ideal in an F-algebra may determine the left amenability of the algebra.

A New Generalization of Fermat's Last Theorem

In this paper, we consider some hybrid Diophantine equations of addition and multiplication. We first improve a result on new Hilbert-Waring problem. Then we consider the equation \begin{equation} \begin{cases} A+B=C ABC=D^n \end{cases} \end{equation} where $A,B,C,D,n \in\ZZ_{+}$ and $n\geq3$, which may be regarded as a generalization of Fermat's equation $x^n+y^n=z^n$. When $\gcd(A,B,C)=1$, $(1)$ is equivalent to Fermat's equation, which means it has no positive integer solutions. We discuss several cases for $\gcd(A,B,C)=p^k$ where $p$ is an odd prime. In particular, for $k=1$ we prove that $(1)$ has no nonzero integer solutions when $n=3$ and we conjecture that it is also true for any prime $n>3$. Finally, we consider equation $(1)$ in quadratic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{t})$ for $n=3$.

Perfect numbers and Fibonacci primes

In this paper, we introduce the concept of $F$-perfect number, which is a positive integer $n$ such that $\sum_{d|n,d<n}d^2=3n$. We prove that all the $F$-perfect numbers are of the form $n=F_{2k-1}F_{2k+1}$, where both $F_{2k-1}$ and $F_{2k+1}$ are Fibonacci primes. Moreover, we obtain other interesting results and raise a new conjecture on perfect numbers.

The First Hypervelocity Star from the LAMOST Survey

We report the first hypervelocity star (HVS) discovered from the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. It is a B-type star with a heliocentric radial velocity about 620 km/s, which projects to a Galactocentric radial velocity component of ~477 km/s. With a heliocentric distance of ~13 kpc and an apparent magnitude of ~13 mag, it is the nearest bright HVS currently known. With a mass of ~9Msun, it is one of the three most massive HVSs discovered so far. The star is clustered on the sky with many other known HVSs, with the position suggesting a possible connection to Galactic center structures. With the current poorly-determined proper motion, a Galactic center origin of this HVS remains consistent with the data at the 1sigma level, while a disk run-away origin cannot be excluded. We discuss the potential of the LAMOST survey to discover a large statistical sample of HVSs of different types.

Discovery of new low-excitation planetary nebulae

We report a multi-wavelength study of four new planetary nebula (PN) candidates selected from the INT/WFC Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic Plane (IPHAS) and Deep Sky Hunter (DSH) catalogues. We present mid-resolution optical spectra of these PNs. The PN status of our sample was confirmed by optical narrow-band images and mid-resolution spectra. Based on the locations of these objects in the log (Ha/[N II]) versus log (Ha/[S II]) diagnostic diagram, we conclude that these sources are evolved lowexcitation PNs. The optical and infrared appearances of these newly discovered PNs are discussed. Three of the new nebulae studied here are detected in infrared and have low infrared-to-radio flux ratios, probably suggesting that they are evolved. Furthermore, we derive the dynamical ages and distances of these nebulae and study the spectral energy distribution for one of them with extensive infrared archival data.
