A Process Calculus with Logical Operators

In order to combine operational and logical styles of specifications in one unified framework, the notion of logic labelled transition systems (Logic LTS, for short) has been presented and explored by Lüttgen and Vogler in [TCS 373(1-2):19-40; Inform. & Comput. 208:845-867]. In contrast with usual LTS, two logical constructors $\wedge$ and $\vee$ over Logic LTSs are introduced to describe logical combinations of specifications. Hitherto such framework has been dealt with in considerable depth, however, process algebraic style way has not yet been involved and the axiomatization of constructors over Logic LTSs is absent. This paper tries to develop Lüttgen and Vogler's work along this direction. We will present a process calculus for Logic LTSs (CLL, for short). The language CLL is explored in detail from two different but equivalent views. Based on behavioral view, the notion of ready simulation is adopted to formalize the refinement relation, and the behavioral theory is developed. Based on proof-theoretic view, a sound and ground-complete axiomatic system for CLL is provided, which captures operators in CLL through (in)equational laws.

The quantum entanglement contained in density matrices

We point out that density matrices can only be used to describe quantum states, so the entanglement contained in a density matrix is just quantum entanglement. This means a bipartite state described by a density matrix contains quantum entanglement, unless the density matrix has the form $ρ_{AB}=ρ_A\otimes ρ_B$.

Singularity of Feynman propagator and Cutkosky's cutting rules

We improve on Cutkosky's cutting rules which is used to calculate the contribution of the singularities of Feynman propagators to Feynman amplitude. The correctness of the improved cutting rules is verified by the calculations of the conventional loop momentum integral algorithm. We also find that only the process of the intermediate on shell particles that is same as real physical process can exist in quantum vacuum.

Coexistence of Fermi arcs and Fermi pockets in a high Tc copper oxide superconductor

In the pseudogap state of the high-Tc copper-oxide (cuprate) superconductors, angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have seen an Fermi arc, i.e., an open-ended gapless section in the large Fermi surface, rather than a closed loop expected of an ordinary metal. This is all the more puzzling because Fermi pockets (small closed Fermi surface features) have been suggested from recent quantum oscillation measurements. The Fermi arcs have worried the high-Tc community for many years because they cannot be understood in terms of existing theories. Theorists came up with a way out in the form of conventional Fermi surface pockets associated with competing order, with a back side that is for detailed reasons invisible by photoemission. Here we report ARPES measurements of La-Bi2201 that give direct evidence of the Fermi pocket. The charge carriers in the pocket are holes and the pockets show an unusual dependence upon doping, namely, they exist in underdoped but not overdoped samples. A big surprise is that these Fermi pockets appear to coexist with the Fermi arcs. This coexistence has not been expected theoretically and the understanding of the mysterious pseudogap state in the high-Tc cuprate superconductors will rely critically on understanding such a new finding.

On the positive solutions to some quasilinear elliptic partial differential equations

We establish that the elliptic equation $Δu+f(x,u)+g(| x|)x\cdot \nabla u=0$, where $x\in\mathbb{R}^{n}$, $n\geq3$, and $| x|>R>0$, has a positive solution which decays to 0 as $| x|\to +\infty$ under mild restrictions on the functions $f,g$. The main theorem extends and complements the conclusions of the recent paper [M. Ehrnström, O.G. Mustafa, On positive solutions of a class of nonlinear elliptic equations, Nonlinear Anal. TMA 67 (2007), 1147--1154]. Its proof relies on a general result about the long-time behavior of the logarithmic derivatives of solutions for a class of nonlinear ordinary differential equations and on the comparison method.

Electronic Evidence of Unusual Magnetic Ordering in a Parent Compound of FeAs-Based Superconductors

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on BaFe2As2, a parent compound of the FeAs-based superconductors. In the magnetic ordering state, there is no gap opening observed on the Fermi surface. Instead, dramatic band structure reorganization occurs across the magnetic transition. The appearance of the singular Fermi spots near (pi,pi) is the most prominent signature of magnetic ordering. These observations provide direct evidence that the magnetic ordering state of BaFe2As2 is distinct from the conventional spin-density-wave state. They reflect the electronic complexity in this multiple-orbital system and necessity in involving the local magnetic moment in describing the underlying electron structure.

Statistical inference for semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear models with error-prone linear covariates

We study semiparametric varying-coefficient partially linear models when some linear covariates are not observed, but ancillary variables are available. Semiparametric profile least-square based estimation procedures are developed for parametric and nonparametric components after we calibrate the error-prone covariates. Asymptotic properties of the proposed estimators are established. We also propose the profile least-square based ratio test and Wald test to identify significant parametric and nonparametric components. To improve accuracy of the proposed tests for small or moderate sample sizes, a wild bootstrap version is also proposed to calculate the critical values. Intensive simulation experiments are conducted to illustrate the proposed approaches.

Multiple Nodeless Superconducting Gaps in (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 Superconductor from Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out to study the superconducting gap in the (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 superconductor with Tc=35 K. Two hole-like Fermi surface sheets around the G(0,0) point exhibit different superconducting gaps. The inner Fermi surface sheet shows larger (10-12 meV) and slightly momentum-dependent gap while the outer one has smaller (7-8 meV) and nearly isotropic gap. The lack of gap node in both Fermi surface sheets favours s-wave superconducting gap symmetry. Superconducting gap opening is also observed at the M(pi,pi) point. The two Fermi surface spots near the M point are gapped below Tc but the gap persists above Tc. The rich and detailed superconducting gap information will provide key insights and constraints in understanding pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors.

Monotonic d-wave Superconducting Gap in Optimally-Doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

The momentum and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap and pseudogap in optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{1.6}$La$_{0.4}$CuO$_6$ superconductor is investigated by super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The measured energy gap in the superconducting state exhibits a standard {\it d}-wave form. Pseudogap opens above T$_c$ over a large portion of the Fermi surface with a "Fermi arc" formed near the nodal region. In the region outside of the "Fermi arc", the pseudogap has the similar magnitude and momentum dependence as the gap in the superconducting state which changes little with temperature and shows no abrupt change across T$_c$. These observations indicate that the pseudogap and superconducting gap are closely related and favor the picture that the pseudogap is a precursor to the superconducting gap.

Identification of Nodal Kink in Electron-Doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High-resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on the electron-doped (Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$)CuO$_4$ high temperature superconductor. We have revealed a clear kink at $\sim$60 meV in the dispersion along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction, accompanied by a peak-dip-hump feature in the photoemission spectra. This indicates that the nodal electrons are coupled to collective excitations (bosons) in electron-doped superconductors, with the phonons as the most likely candidate of the boson. This finding has established a universality of nodal electron coupling in both hole- and electron-doped high temperature cuprate superconductors.

Fermi Surface and Band Renormalization in (Sr,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$ Superconductor from Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements have been carried out on (Sr,K)Fe$_2$As$_2$ superconductor (Tc=21 K). Three hole-like Fermi surface sheets are clearly resolved for the first time around the Gamma point. The overall electronic structure shows significant difference from the band structure calculations. Qualitative agreement between the measured and calculated band structure is realized by assuming a chemical potential shift of -0.2 eV. The obvious band renormalization suggests the importance of electron correlation in understanding the electronic structure of the Fe-based compounds.

Common Features in Electronic Structure of the Fe-Based Layered Superconductors from Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting LaOFeAs parent compound and various superconducting R(O1-xFx)FeAs (R=La, Ce and Pr) compounds. We found that the parent LaOFeAs compound shows a metallic character. Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5). Near EF spectral weight suppression with decreasing temperature. These universal features can provide important information about band structure, superconducting gap and pseudogap in these Fe-based materials.

Superconducting Gap and Pseudogap in Sm(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs Layered Superconductor from Photoemission Spectroscopy

High resolution photoemission measurements have been carried out on non-superconducting SmOFeAs parent compound and superconducting Sm(O$_{1-x}$F$_x$)FeAs (x=0.12, and 0.15) compounds. The momentum-integrated spectra exhibit a clear Fermi cutoff that shows little leading-edge shift in the superconducting state which suggests the Fermi surface sheet(s) around the $Γ$ point may not be gapped in this multiband superconductors. A robust feature at 13 meV is identified in all these samples. Spectral weight suppression near E$_F$ with decreasing temperature is observed in both undoped and doped samples that points to a possible existence of a pseudogap in these Fe-based compounds.

Identification of a New Form of Electron Coupling in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 Superconductor by Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements with super-high resolution have been carried out on an optimally-doped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ high temperature superconductor. New high energy features at $\sim$115 meV and $\sim$150 meV, besides the prominent $\sim$70 meV one, are found to develop in the nodal electron self-energy in the superconducting state. These high energy features, which can not be attributed to electron coupling with single phonon or magnetic resonance mode, point to the existence of a new form of electron coupling in high temperature superconductors.

High Energy Dispersions in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 High Temperature Superconductor from Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission

Super-high resolution laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements have been carried out on the high energy electron dynamics in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) high temperature superconductor. Momentum dependent measurements provide new insights on the nature of high energy kink at 200~400 meV and high energy dispersions. The strong dichotomy between the MDC- and EDC-derived bands is revealed which raises critical issues about its origin and which one represents intrinsic band structure. The MDC-derived high energy features are affected by the high-intensity valence band at higher binding energy and may not be intrinsic.

Development of a Vacuum Ultra-Violet Laser-Based Angle-Resolved Photoemission System with a Super-High Energy Resolution Better Than 1 meV

The design and performance of the first vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) system are described. The VUV laser with a photon energy of 6.994 eV and bandwidth of 0.26 meV is achieved from the second harmonic generation using a novel non-linear optical crystal KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF). The new VUV laser-based ARPES system exhibits superior performance, including super-high energy resolution better than 1 meV, high momentum resolution, super-high photon flux and much enhanced bulk sensitivity, which are demonstrated from measurements on a typical Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 high temperature superconductor. Issues and further development related to the VUV laser-based photoemission technique are discussed.

Hazard models with varying coefficients for multivariate failure time data

Statistical estimation and inference for marginal hazard models with varying coefficients for multivariate failure time data are important subjects in survival analysis. A local pseudo-partial likelihood procedure is proposed for estimating the unknown coefficient functions. A weighted average estimator is also proposed in an attempt to improve the efficiency of the estimator. The consistency and asymptotic normality of the proposed estimators are established and standard error formulas for the estimated coefficients are derived and empirically tested. To reduce the computational burden of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator, a simple and useful one-step estimator is proposed. Statistical properties of the one-step estimator are established and simulation studies are conducted to compare the performance of the one-step estimator to that of the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator. The results show that the one-step estimator can save computational cost without compromising performance both asymptotically and empirically and that an optimal weighted average estimator is more efficient than the maximum local pseudo-partial likelihood estimator. A data set from the Busselton Population Health Surveys is analyzed to illustrate our proposed methodology.
