Calibration of the DAMPE Plastic Scintillator Detector and its on-orbit performance

DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a space-borne apparatus for detecting the high-energy cosmic-rays like electrons, $γ$-rays, protons and heavy-ions. Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is the top-most sub-detector of the DAMPE. The PSD is designed to measure the charge of incident high-energy particles and it also serves as a veto detector for discriminating $γ$-rays from charged particles. In this paper, PSD on-orbit calibration procedure is described, which includes five steps of pedestal, dynode correlation, response to minimum-ionizing particles (MIPs), light attenuation function and energy reconstruction. A method for reconstructing the charge of incident high energy cosmic-ray particles is introduced. The detection efficiency of each PSD strip is verified to be above 99.5%, the total efficiency of the PSD for charged particles is above 99.99%.

Finsler space-time can explain both parity asymmetry and power deficit seen in CMB temperature anisotropies

We propose a framework of Finsler space-time to explain the observed parity asymmetry and the power deficit in the low-$\ell$ ($2\leqslant \ell \leqslant 29$) multipole range of cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. In the $3+1$ dimensional space-time, the three-dimensional space is described by a Randers-Finsler space, which is spatially irreversible, inducing the parity asymmetry in the CMB angular power spectrum. We estimate the constraints on the two parameters introduced by Finsler space-time via analyzing the low-$\ell$ angular power spectrum in PLANCK 2015 CMB temperature data. We see that the low-$\ell$ power suppression in the CMB temperature anisotropies can also be resolved in this scenario. Our study shows that the two low-$\ell$ anomalies, i.e., parity asymmetry and power deficit, may have a common origin.

Searching for a possible dipole anisotropy on acceleration scale with 147 rotationally supported galaxies

We report a possible dipole anisotropy on acceleration scale $g_†$ with 147 rotationally supported galaxies in local Universe. It is found that a monopole and dipole correction for the radial acceleration relation can better describe the SPARC data set. The monopole term is negligible but the dipole magnitude is significant. It is also found that the dipole correction is mostly induced by the anisotropy on the acceleration scale. The magnitude of $\hat{g}_†$-dipole reaches up to $0.25\pm0.04$, and its direction is aligned to $(l,b) = (171.30^{\circ}\pm7.18^{\circ}, -15.41^{\circ}\pm4.87^{\circ})$, which is very close to the maximum anisotropy direction from the hemisphere comparison method. Furthermore, robust check shows that the dipole anisotropy couldn't be reproduced by isotropic mock data set. However, it is still premature to claim that the Universe is anisotropic due to the small data samples and uncertainty in the current observations.

Finite difference/element method for time-fractional Navier-Stokes equations

We apply a composite idea of semi-discrete finite difference approximation in time and Galerkin finite element method in space to solve the Navier-Stokes equations with Caputo derivative of order 0 < α < 1. The stability properties and convergence error estimates for both the semi-discrete and fully discrete schemes are obtained. Numerical example is provided to illustrate the validity of theoretical results.

Further study on the maximum number of bent components of vectorial functions

In 2018, Pott, at al. have studied in [IEEE Transactions on Information Theory. Volume: 64, Issue: 1, 2018] the maximum number of bent components of vectorial function. They have presented serval nice results and suggested several open problems in this context. This paper is in the continuation of their study in which we solve two open problems raised by Pott et al. and partially solve an open problem raised by the same authors. Firstly, we prove that for a vectorial function, the property of having the maximum number of bent components is invariant under the so-called CCZ equivalence. Secondly, we prove the non-existence of APN plateaued having the maximum number of bent components. In particular, quadratic APN functions cannot have the maximum number of bent components. Finally, we present some sufficient conditions that the vectorial function defined from $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2k}}$ to $\mathbb{F}_{2^{2k}}$ by its univariate representation: $$ αx^{2^i}\left(x+x^{2^k}+\sum\limits_{j=1}^ργ^{(j)}x^{2^{t_j}} +\sum\limits_{j=1}^ργ^{(j)}x^{2^{t_j+k}}\right)$$ has the maximum number of {components bent functions, where $ρ\leq k$}. Further, we show that the differential spectrum of the function $ x^{2^i}(x+x^{2^k}+x^{2^{t_1}}+x^{2^{t_1+k}}+x^{2^{t_2}}+x^{2^{t_2+k}})$ (where $i,t_1,t_2$ satisfy some conditions) is different from the binomial function $F^i(x)= x^{2^i}(x+x^{2^k})$ presented in the article of Pott et al. Finally, we provide sufficient and necessary conditions so that the functions $$Tr_1^{2k}\left(αx^{2^i}\left(Tr^{2k}_{e}(x)+\sum\limits_{j=1}^ργ^{(j)}(Tr^{2k}_{e}(x))^{2^j} \right)\right) $$ are bent.

A novel total variation model based on kernel functions and its application

The total variation (TV) model and its related variants have already been proposed for image processing in previous literature. In this paper a novel total variation model based on kernel functions is proposed. In this novel model, we first map each pixel value of an image into a Hilbert space by using a nonlinear map, and then define a coupled image of an original image in order to construct a kernel function. Finally, the proposed model is solved in a kernel function space instead of in the projecting space from a nonlinear map. For the proposed model, we theoretically show under what conditions the mapping image is in the space of bounded variation when the original image is in the space of bounded variation. It is also found that the proposed model further extends the generalized TV model and the information from three different channels of color images can be fused by adopting various kernel functions. A series of experiments on some gray and color images are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

A survey on fuzzy fractional differential and optimal control nonlocal evolution equations

We survey some representative results on fuzzy fractional differential equations, controllability, approximate controllability, optimal control, and optimal feedback control for several different kinds of fractional evolution equations. Optimality and relaxation of multiple control problems, described by nonlinear fractional differential equations with nonlocal control conditions in Banach spaces, are considered.

The strong representation for the nonparametric estimation of length-biased and right-censored data

In this article, we consider a useful product-limit estimator of distribution function proposed by Huang & Qin(2011) when the observations are subject to length-biased and right-censored data. The estimator retains the simple closed-form expression of the truncation product-limit estimator with some good properties. An almost sure representation for the estimator is obtained which can be used to derive many properties of functional statistics based on this product-limit estimator. The rate for the remainder in the representation is of order $O(n^{-3/4}(\log(n)^{3/4}) $ a.s.

Searching for a cosmological preferred direction with 147 rotationally supported galaxies

It is well known that the Milgrom's MOND (modified Newtonian dynamics) explains well the mass discrepancy problem in galaxy rotation curves. The MOND predicts a universal acceleration scale below which the Newtonian dynamics is invalid yet. The universal acceleration scale we got from the SPARC dataset is $g_†=1.02\times10^{-10} \rm m~s^{-2}$. Milgrom suggested that the acceleration scale may be a fingerprint of cosmology on local dynamics and related with the Hubble constant $g_†\sim cH_0$. In this paper, we use the hemisphere comparison method with the SPARC dataset to investigate the spatial anisotropy on the acceleration scale. We find that the hemisphere of the maximum acceleration scale is in the direction $(l,b) = ({175.5^\circ}^{+6^\circ}_{-10^\circ}, {-6.5^\circ}^{+8^\circ}_{-3^\circ})$ with $g_{†,max}=1.10\times10^{-10} \rm m~s^{-2}$, while the hemisphere of the minimum acceleration scale is in the opposite direction $(l,b) = ({355.5^\circ}^{+6^\circ}_{-10^\circ}, {6.5^\circ}^{+3^\circ}_{-8^\circ})$ with $g_{†,min}=0.76\times10^{-10} \rm m~s^{-2}$. The maximum anisotropy level reaches up to $0.37\pm0.04$. Robust tests present that such a level of anisotropy can't be reproduced by a statistically isotropic data. In addition, we show that the spatial anisotropy on the acceleration scale has little correlation with the non-uniform distribution of the SPARC data points in sky. We also find that the maximum anisotropy direction is close with other cosmological preferred directions, especially the direction of the "Australia dipole" for the fine structure constant.

The Plastic Scintillator Detector at DAMPE

he DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) is a general purposed satellite-borne high energy $γ-$ray and cosmic ray detector, and among the scientific objectives of DAMPE are the searches for the origin of cosmic rays and an understanding of Dark Matter particles. As one of the four detectors in DAMPE, the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) plays an important role in the particle charge measurement and the photons/electrons separation. The PSD has 82 modules, each consists of a long organic plastic scintillator bar and two PMTs at both ends for readout, in two layers and covers an overall active area larger than 82 cm $\times$ 82 cm. It can identify the charge states for relativistic ions from H to Fe, and the detector efficiency for Z=1 particles can reach 0.9999. The PSD has been successfully launched with DAMPE on Dec. 17, 2015. In this paper, the design, the assembly, the qualification tests of the PSD and some of the performance measured on the ground have been described in detail.

Temperature dependence of the plastic scintillator detector for DAMPE

The Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) is one of the main sub-detectors in the DArk Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) project. It will be operated over a large temperature range from -$10$ to $30^{\circ}$C, so the temperature effect of the whole detection system should be studied in detail. The temperature dependence of the PSD system is mainly contributed by the three parts: the plastic scintillator bar, the photomultiplier tube (PMT), and the Front End Electronics (FEE). These three parts have been studied in detail and the contribution of each part has been obtained and discussed. The temperature coefficient of the PMT is $-0.320(\pm0.033)\%/^{\circ}$C, and the coefficient of the plastic scintillator bar is $-0.036(\pm0.038)\%/^{\circ}$C. This result means that after subtracting the FEE pedestal, the variation of the signal amplitude of the PMT-scintillator system due to temperature mainly comes from the PMT, and the plastic scintillator bar is not sensitive to temperature over the operating range. Since the temperature effect cannot be ignored, the temperature dependence of the whole PSD has been also studied and a correction has been made to minimize this effect. The correction result shows that the effect of temperature on the signal amplitude of the PSD system can be suppressed.

Design of a large dynamic range readout unit for the PSD detector of DAMPE

A large dynamic range is required by the Plastic Scintillator Detector (PSD) of DArk Matter Paricle Explorer (DAMPE), and a double-dynode readout has been developed. To verify this design, a prototype detector module has been constructed and tested with cosmic rays and heavy ion beams. The results match with the estimation and the readout unit could easily cover the required dynamic range.

A versatile test bench system, dedicated for massive PMT characterization, is developed at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It can perform many test contents with large capacity and high level of automation, and the migration from one testing configuration to another is lightweight and time-saving. This system has been used in the construction of the Plastic Scintillator Detector of DArk Matter Particle Explorer already, and a total of 570 Hamamatsu R4443 tubes have been tested successfully.

A large area plastic scintillation detector with 4-corner-readout

A 760 $\times$ 760 $\times$ 30 mm$^3$ plastic scintillation detector viewed by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) from four corners has been developed, and the detector has been tested with cosmic rays and $γ$ rays. A position-independent effective time T$_{eff}$ has been found, indicating this detector can be used as a TOF detector. The hit position can also be reconstructed by the time from four corners. A TOF resolution of 236 ps and a position resolution of 48 mm have been achieved, and the detection efficiency has also been investigated.

The consistency of estimator under fixed design regression model with NQD errors

In this article, basing on NQD samples, we investigate the fixed design nonparametric regression model, where the errors are pairwise NQD random errors, with fixed design points, and an unknown function. Nonparametric weighted estimator will be introduced and its consistency is studied. As special case, the consistency result for weighted kernel estimators of the model is obtained. This extends the earlier work on independent random and dependent random errors to NQD case.

Semi-Penalized Inference with Direct False Discovery Rate Control in High-Dimensions

We propose a new method, semi-penalized inference with direct false discovery rate control (SPIDR), for variable selection and confidence interval construction in high-dimensional linear regression. SPIDR first uses a semi-penalized approach to constructing estimators of the regression coefficients. We show that the SPIDR estimator is ideal in the sense that it equals an ideal least squares estimator with high probability under a sparsity and other suitable conditions. Consequently, the SPIDR estimator is asymptotically normal. Based on this distributional result, SPIDR determines the selection rule by directly controlling false discovery rate. This provides an explicit assessment of the selection error. This also naturally leads to confidence intervals for the selected coefficients with a proper confidence statement. We conduct simulation studies to evaluate its finite sample performance and demonstrate its application on a breast cancer gene expression data set. Our simulation studies and data example suggest that SPIDR is a useful method for high-dimensional statistical inference in practice.

Enhanced Hot-Carrier Luminescence in Multilayer Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanospheres

We report a method to promote photoluminescence emission in graphene materials by enhancing carrier scattering instead of directly modifying band structure in multilayer reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanospheres. We intentionally curl graphene layers to form nanospheres by reducing graphene oxide with spherical polymer templates to manipulate the carrier scattering. These nanospheres produce hot-carrier luminescence with more than ten-fold improvement of emission efficiency as compared to planar nanosheets. With increasing excitation power, hot-carrier luminescence from nanospheres exhibits abnormal spectral redshift with dynamic feature associated to the strengthened electron-phonon coupling. These experimental results can be well understood by considering the screened Coulomb interactions. With increasing carrier density, the reduced screening effect promotes carrier scattering which enhances hot-carrier emission from such multilayer rGO nanospheres. This carrier-scattering scenario is further confirmed by pump-probe measurements.

Commutator estimates in Besov-Morrey spaces with applications to the well-posedness of the Euler equations and ideal MHD system

We develop commutator estimates in the framework of Besov-Morrey spaces, which are modeled on Besov spaces and the underlying norm is of Morrey space rather than the usual $L^{p}$ space. As direct applications of commutator estimates, we establish the local well-posedness and blow-up criterion of solutions in Besov-Morrey spaces for the incompressible Euler equations and ideal MHD system. Main analysis tools are the Littlewood-Paley decomposition and Bony's para-product formula.
