Lagrangian Floer theory on compact toric manifolds II : Bulk deformations

This is a continuation of part I in the series of the papers on Lagrangian Floer theory on toric manifolds. Using the deformations of Floer cohomology by the ambient cycles, which we call bulk deformations, we find a continuum of non-displaceable Lagrangian fibers on some compact toric manifolds. We also provide a method of finding all fibers with non-vanishing Floer cohomology with bulk deformations in arbitrary compact toric manifolds, which we call bulk-balanced Lagrangian fibers.

Lagrangian Floer theory on compact toric manifolds: survey

This article is a survey of a series of papers [FOOO3,FOOO4,FOOO5] in which we developed the method of calculation of Floer cohomology of Lagrangian torus orbits in compact toric manifolds, and its applications to symplectic topology and to mirror symmetry. In this article we summarize the main ingredients of calculation and illustrate them by examples. The second half of the survey is devoted to discussion of the most recent result from [FOOO5] (arXiv:1009.1648) where the mirror symmetry between the two Frobenius manifolds arising from the big quantum cohomology and from the K. Saito theory of singularities was established.

Floer trajectories with immersed nodes and scale-dependent gluing

We define an enhanced compactification of Floer trajectories under Morse background using the adiabatic degeneration and the scale-dependent gluing techniques. The compactification reflects the 1-jet datum of the smooth Floer trajectories nearby the limiting nodal Floer trajectories arising from adiabatic degeneration of the background Morse function. This paper studies the gluing problem when the limiting gradient trajectories has length zero through a renomalization process. The case with limiting gradient trajectories of non-zero length will be treated elsewhere. An immediate application of our result is a proof of the isomorphism property of the PSS map : A proof of this isomorphism property was first outlined by Pünihikin-Salamon-Schwarz \cite{PSS} in a way somewhat different from the current proof in its details. This kind of scale-dependent gluing techniques was initiated in [FOOO07] in relation to the metamorphosis of holomorphic polygons under Lagrangian surgery and is expected to appear in other gluing and compactification problem of pseudo-holomorphic curves that involves `adiabatic' parameters or rescales the targets.

Anchored Lagrangian submanifolds and their Floer theory

We introduce the notion of (graded) anchored Lagrangian submanifolds and use it to study the filtration of Floer' s chain complex. We then obtain an anchored version of Lagrangian Floer homology and its (higher) product structures. They are somewhat different from the more standard non-anchored version. The anchored version discussed in this paper is more naturally related to the variational picture of Lagrangian Floer theory and so to the likes of spectral invariants. We also discuss rationality of Lagrangian submanifold and reduction of the coefficient ring of Lagrangian Floer cohomology of thereof.

Embedding property of $J$-holomorphic curves in Calabi-Yau manifolds for generic $J$

In this paper, we prove that for a generic choice of tame (or compatible) almost complex structures $J$ on a symplectic manifold $(M^{2n},ω)$ with $n \geq 3$ and with its first Chern class $c_1(M,ω) = 0$, all somewhere injective $J$-holomorphic maps from any closed smooth Riemann surface into $M$ are \emph{embedded}. We derive this result as a consequence of the general optimal 1-jet evaluation transversality result of $J$-holomorphic maps in general symplectic manifolds that we also prove in this paper.

Locality of continuous Hamiltonian flows and Lagrangian intersections with the conormal of open subsets

In this paper, we prove that if a continuous Hamiltonian flow fixes the points in an open subset $U$ of a symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$, then its associated Hamiltonian is constant at each moment on $U$. As a corollary, we prove that the Hamiltonian of compactly supported continuous Hamiltonian flows is unique both on a compact $M$ with smooth boundary $\del M$ and on a non-compact manifold bounded at infinity. An essential tool for the proof of the locality is the Lagrangian intersection theorem for the conormals of open subsets proven by Kasturirangan and the author, combined with Viterbo's scheme that he introduced in the proof of uniqueness of the Hamiltonian on a closed manifold \cite{viterbo2}. We also prove the converse of the theorem which localizes a previously known global result in symplectic topology.

$C^0$-coerciveness of Moser's problem and smoothing area preserving homeomorphisms

In this paper, we establish the $C^0$-coerciveness of Moser's problem of mapping one smooth volume form to another in terms of the weak topology of measures associated to the volume forms. The proof relies on our analysis of Dacorogna-Moser's solution to Moser's problem of mapping one volume form to the other with the same total mass. As an application, we give a proof of smoothing result of area preserving homeomorphisms and its parametric version in two dimension, (or more generally in any dimension in which the smoothing theorem of homeomorphisms is possible, e.g., in dimension 3 but not necessarily in dimension 4). This in turn results in coincidence of the area-preserving homeomorphism group and the symplectic homeomorphism group in two dimension.

The group of Hamiltonian homeomorphisms and $C^0$ symplectic topology

The main purpose of this paper is to carry out some of the foundational study of $C^0$-Hamiltonian geometry and $C^0$-symplectic topology. We introduce the notions of the strong and the weak {\it Hamiltonian topology} on the space of Hamiltonian paths, and on the group of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. We then define the {\it group} $Hameo(M,ω)$ and the space $Hameo^w(M,ω)$ of {\it Hamiltonian homeomorphisms} such that $$ Ham(M,ω) \subsetneq Hameo(M,ω) \subset Hameo^w(M,ω) \subset Sympeo(M,ω) $$ where $Sympeo(M,ω)$ is the group of symplectic homeomorphisms. We prove that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is a {\it normal subgroup} of $Sympeo(M,ω)$ and contains all the time-one maps of Hamiltonian vector fields of $C^{1,1}$-functions. We prove that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is path connected and so contained in the identity component $Sympeo_0(M,ω)$ of $Sympeo(M,ω)$. In the case of an orientable surface, we prove that the {\it mass flow} of any element from $Hameo(M,ω)$ vanishes, which in turn implies that $Hameo(M,ω)$ is strictly smaller than the identity component of the group of area preserving homeomorphisms when $M \neq S^2$. For the case of $S^2$, we conjecture that $Hameo(S^2,ω)$ is still a proper subgroup of $Homeo^ω_0(S^2) = Sympeo_0(S^2,ω)$.

Floer homology in symplectic geometry and in mirror symmetry

In this article, the authors review what the Floer homology is and what it does in symplectic geometry both in the closed string and in the open string context. In the first case, the authors will explain how the chain level Floer theory leads to the $C^0$ symplectic invariants of Hamiltonian flows and to the study of topological Hamiltonian dynamics. In the second case, the authors explain how Floer's original construction of Lagrangian intersection Floer homology is obstructed in general as soon as one leaves the category of exact Lagrangian submanifolds. They will survey construction, obstruction and promotion of the Floer complex to the $A_\infty$ category of symplectic manifolds. Some applications of this general machinery to the study of the topology of Lagrangian embeddings in relation to symplectic topology and to mirror symmetry are also reviewed.

Spectral invariants, analysis of the Floer moduli spaces and geometry of the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group

In this paper, we apply spectral invariants, constructed in [Oh5,8], to the study of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms of closed symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$. Using spectral invariants, we first construct an invariant norm called the {\it spectral norm} on the Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group and obtain several lower bounds for the spectral norm in terms of the $\e$-regularity theorem and the symplectic area of certain pseudo-holomorphic curves. We then apply spectral invariants to the study of length minimizing properties of certain Hamiltonian paths {\it among all paths}. In addition to the construction of spectral invariants, these applications rely heavily on the {\it chain level Floer theory} and on some existence theorems with energy bounds of pseudo-holomorphic sections of certain Hamiltonian fibrations with prescribed monodromy. The existence scheme that we develop in this paper in turn relies on some careful geometric analysis involving {\it adiabatic degeneration} and {\it thick-thin decomposition} of the Floer moduli spaces which has an independent interest of its own. We assume that $(M,ω)$ is {\it strongly semi-positive} throughout, which will be removed in a sequel.

Deformations of coisotropic submanifolds and strong homotopy Lie algebroids

In this paper, we study deformations of coisotropic submanifolds in a symplectic manifold. First we derive the equation that governs $C^\infty$ deformations of coisotropic submanifolds and define the corresponding $C^\infty$-moduli space of coisotropic submanifolds modulo the Hamiltonian isotopies. This is a non-commutative and non-linear generalization of the well-known description of the local deformation space of Lagrangian submanifolds as the set of graphs of {\it closed} one forms in the Darboux-Weinstein chart of a given Lagrangian submanifold. We then introduce the notion of {\it strong homotopy Lie algebroid} (or {\it $L_\infty$-algebroid}) and associate a canonical isomorphism class of strong homotopy Lie algebroids to each pre-symplectic manifold $(Y,ω)$ and identify the formal deformation space of coisotropic embeddings into a symplectic manifold in terms of this strong homotopy Lie algebroid. The formal moduli space then is provided by the gauge equivalence classes of solutions of a version of the {\it Maurer-Cartan equation} (or the {\it master equation}) of the strong homotopy Lie algebroid, and plays the role of the classical part of the moduli space of quantum deformation space of coisotropic $A$-branes. We provide a criterion for the unobstructedness of the deformation problem and analyze a family of examples that illustrates that this deformation problem is obstructed in general and heavily depends on the geometry and dynamics of the null foliation.

Construction of spectral invariants of Hamiltonian paths on closed symplectic manifolds

In this paper, we develop a mini-max theory of the action functional over the semi-infinite cycles via the chain level Floer homology theory and construct spectral invariants of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms on arbitrary, especially on {\it non-exact and non-rational}, compact symplectic manifold $(M,ω)$. To each given time dependent Hamiltonian function $H$ and quantum cohomology class $ 0 \neq a \in QH^*(M)$, we associate an invariant $ρ(H;a)$ which varies continuously over $H$ in the $C^0$-topology. This is obtained as the mini-max value over the semi-infinite cycles whose homology class is `dual' to the given quantum cohomology class $a$ on the covering space $\widetilde Ω_0(M)$ of the contractible loop space $Ω_0(M)$. We call them the {\it Novikov Floer cycles}. We apply the spectral invariants to the study of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms in sequels of this paper.

Length minimizing property, Conley-Zehnder index and $C^1$-perturbations of Hamiltonian functions

The main purpose of this paper is to study the length minimizing property of Hamiltonian paths on closed symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ such that there are no spherical homology class $A \in H_2(M)$ with $$ ω(A) > 0 \quad \text{and} \quad -n \leq c_1(A) < 0, $$ which we call {\it very strongly semi-positive}. We introduce the notion of {\it positively $μ$-undertwisted} Hamiltonian paths and prove that any positively undertwisted quasi-autonomous Hamiltonian path is length minimizing in its homotopy class as long as it has a fixed maximum and a fixed minimum point that are generically under-twisted. This class of Hamiltonian can have non-constant large periodic orbits. The proof uses the chain level Floer theory, spectral invariants of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and the argument involving the thick and thin decomposition of Floer's moduli space of perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equation. And then based on this theorem and some closedness of length minimizing property, we relate the Minimality Conjecture on the very strongly semi-positive symplectic manifolds to a $C^1$-perturbation problem of Hamiltonian functions on general symplectic manifolds, which we also formulate here.

Geometry of coisotropic submanifolds in symplectic and Kähler manifolds

The first purpose of this paper is to generalize the well-known Maslov indices of maps of open Riemann surfaces with boundary lying on Lagrangian submanifolds to maps with boundary lying on coisotropic submanifolds in symplectic manifolds. For this purpose, we first define the notion of {\it Maslov loops} of coisotropic Grassmanians and their indices. Then we introduce the notions of {\it transverse Maslov bundle} of coisotropic submanifolds, and {\it gradable coisotropic submanifolds}. We then define {\it graded coisotropic submanifolds} and the {\it coisotropic Maslov index} of the maps with boundary lying on such graded coisotropic submanifolds, which reduces to the standard Maslov index of disc maps for the case of Lagrangian submanifolds. The second purpose is to study the geometry of coisotropic submanifolds in Kähler manifolds. We introduce the notion of the leafwise mean curvature form and transverse canonical bundle of coisotropic submanifolds and study various geometric properties thereof. Finally we combine all these to define the notion of {\it special coisotropic submanifolds} for the case of Calabi-Yau manifolds, and prove various consequences on their properties of the coisotropic Maslov indices.

Spectral invariants and length minimizing property of Hamiltonian paths

In this paper we provide a criterion for the quasi-autonomous Hamiltonian path (``Hofer's geodesic'') on arbitrary closed symplectic manifolds $(M,ω)$ to be length minimizing in its homotopy class in terms of the spectral invariants $ρ(G;1)$ that the author has recently constructed (math.SG/0206092). As an application, we prove that any autonomous Hamiltonian path on arbitrary closed symplectic manifolds is length minimizing in {\it its homotopy class} with fixed ends, when it has no contractible periodic orbits {\it of period one}, has a maximum and a minimum point which are generically under-twisted and all of its critical points are nondegenerate in the Floer theoretic sense. This is a sequel to the papers math.SG/0104243 and math.SG/0206092.

An existence theorem, with energy bounds, of Floer's perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equation with jumping discontinuity

This is a sequel to the paper [Oh5] (or ArXiv:math.SG/0206092). The main purpose of the paper is to give the proof of an existence theorem, with energy bounds, of certain pseudo-holomorphic sections of the mapping cylinder that is needed for the proof of nondegeneracy of the homological invariant pseudo-norm which the author has constructed on general symplectic manifolds [Oh4,5]. The existence theorem is also the crux of the author's recent proof of an optimal energy-capacity inequality given in [Oh5]. In this paper, we prove a more general existence result than needed in that we study Floer's perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equations with discontinous Hamiltonian perturbation terms and prove an existence theorem of certain piecewise smooth finite energy solutions of the equation. The proof relies on a careful study of the product structure in the chain level Floer homology theory and a singular degeneration (``adiabatic degeneration'') of Floer's perturbed Cauchy-Riemann equation. In the course of the proof, we also derive certain general energy identity of pseudo-holomorphic sections of the Hamiltonian fibration.
