Joint Optimization of Wind Farm Layout Considering Optimal Control

The wake effect is one of the leading causes of energy losses in offshore wind farms (WFs). Both turbine placement and cooperative control can influence the wake interactions inside the WF and thus the overall WF power production. Traditionally, greedy control strategy is assumed in the layout design phase. To exploit the potential synergy between the WF layout and control so that a system-level optimal layout can be obtained with the greatest energy yields, the layout optimization should be performed with cooperative control considerations. For this purpose, a novel two-stage WF layout optimization model is developed in this paper. Cooperative WF control of both turbine yaw and axis-induction are considered in the WF layout design. However, the integration of WF control makes the layout optimization much more complicated and results in a large-scale nonconvex problem, hindering the application of current layout optimization methods. To increase the computational efficiency, we leverage the hierarchy and decomposability of the joint optimization problem and design a decomposition-based hybrid method (DBHM). Instead of manipulating all the variables simultaneously, the joint optimization problem is decomposed into several subproblems and their coordination. Case studies are carried out on different WFs. It is shown that WF layouts with higher energy yields can be obtained by the proposed joint optimization compared to traditional separate layout optimization. Moreover, the computational advantages of the proposed DBHM on the considered joint layout optimization problem are also demonstrated.

Achieving an Accurate Random Process Model for PV Power using Cheap Data: Leveraging the SDE and Public Weather Reports

The stochastic differential equation (SDE)-based random process models of volatile renewable energy sources (RESs) jointly capture the evolving probability distribution and temporal correlation in continuous time. It has enabled recent studies to remarkably improve the performance of power system dynamic uncertainty quantification and optimization. However, considering the non-homogeneous random process nature of PV, there still remains a challenging question: how can a realistic and accurate SDE model for PV power be obtained that reflects its weather-dependent uncertainty in online operation, especially when high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) is unavailable for many distributed plants? To fill this gap, this article finds that an accurate SDE model for PV power can be constructed by only using the cheap data from low-resolution public weather reports. Specifically, an hourly parameterized Jacobi diffusion process is constructed to recreate the temporal patterns of PV volatility during a day. Its parameters are mapped from the public weather report using an ensemble of extreme learning machines (ELMs) to reflect the varying weather conditions. The SDE model jointly captures intraday and intrahour volatility. Statistical examination based on real-world data collected in Macau shows the proposed approach outperforms a selection of state-of-the-art deep learning-based time-series forecast methods.

Deep Learning-Aided Model Predictive Control of Wind Farms for AGC Considering the Dynamic Wake Effect

To provide automatic generation control (AGC) service, wind farms (WFs) are required to control their operation dynamically to track the time-varying power reference. Wake effects impose significant aerodynamic interactions among turbines, which remarkably influence the WF dynamic power production. The nonlinear and high-dimensional nature of dynamic wake model, however, brings extremely high computation complexity and obscure the design of WF controllers. This paper overcomes the control difficulty brought by the dynamic wake model by proposing a novel control-oriented reduced order WF model and a deep-learning-aided model predictive control (MPC) method. Leveraging recent advances in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to provide high-fidelity data that simulates WF dynamic wake flows, two novel deep neural network (DNN) architectures are specially designed to learn a dynamic WF reduced-order model (ROM) that can capture the dominant flow dynamics. Then, a novel MPC framework is constructed that explicitly incorporates the obtained WF ROM to coordinate different turbines while considering dynamic wake interactions. The proposed WF ROM and the control method are evaluated in a widely-accepted high-dimensional dynamic WF simulator whose accuracy has been validated by realistic measurement data. A 9-turbine WF case and a larger 25-turbine WF case are studied. By reducing WF model states by many orders of magnitude, the computational burden of the control method is reduced greatly. Besides, through the proposed method, the range of AGC signals that can be tracked by the WF in the dynamic operation is extended compared with the existing greedy controller.

Tertiary Regulation of Cascaded Run-of-the-River Hydropower in the Islanded Renewable Power System Considering Multi-Timescale Dynamics

To enable power supply in rural areas and to exploit clean energy, fully renewable power systems consisting of cascaded run-of-the-river hydropower and volatile energies such as pv and wind are built around the world. In islanded operation mode, the primary and secondary frequency control, i.e., hydro governors and automatic generation control (AGC), are responsible for the frequency stability. However, due to limited water storage capacity of run-of-the-river hydropower and river dynamics constraints, without coordination between the cascaded plants, the traditional AGC with fixed participation factors cannot fully exploit the adjustability of cascaded hydropower. When imbalances between the volatile energy and load occur, load shedding can be inevitable. To address this issue, this paper proposes a coordinated tertiary control approach by jointly considering power system dynamics and the river dynamics that couples the cascaded hydropower plants. The timescales of the power system and river dynamics are very different. To unify the multi-timescale dynamics to establish a model predictive controller that coordinates the cascaded plants, the relation between AGC parameters and turbine discharge over a time interval is approximated by a data-based second-order polynomial surrogate model. The cascaded plants are coordinated by optimising AGC participation factors in a receding-horizon manner, and load shedding is minimised. Simulation of a real-life system with real-time pv data collected on site shows the proposed method significantly reduces load loss under pv volatility.

Technoeconomic Supplement of P2G Clusters with Hydrogen Pipeline for Coordinated Renewable Energy and HVDC Systems

Under the downward tendency of prices of renewable energy generators and upward trend of hydrogen demand, this paper studies the technoeconomic supplement of P2G clusters with hydrogen pipeline for HVDC to jointly consume renewable energy. First, the planning and operation constraints of large-capacity P2G clusters is established. On this basis, the multistage coordinated planning model of renewable energy, HVDCs, P2Gs and hydrogen pipelines is proposed considering both variability and uncertainty, rendering a distributionally robust chance-constrained (DRCC) program. Then this model is applied in the case study based on the real Inner Mongolia-Shandong system. Compared with energy transmission via HVDC only, P2G can provide operation supplement with its operational flexibility and long term economic supplement with increasing demand in high-valued transportation sector, which stimulates an extra 24 GW renewable energy exploration. Sensitivity analysis for both technical and economic factors further verifies the advantages of P2G in the presence of high variability due to renewable energy and downward tendency of prices of renewable energy generators. However, since the additional levelized cost of the P2G (0.04 RMB/kWh) is approximately twice the HVDC (0.02 RMB/kWh), P2G is more sensitive to uncertainty from both renewable energy and hydrogen demand.

Topology-free optimal power dispatch for distribution network considering security constraints and flexible building thermal inertia

With the increasing integration of distributed PV generation, the distribution network requires more and more flexibility to achieve the security-constrained optimal power dispatch. However, the conventional flexibility sources usually require additional investment cost for equipment. Moreover, involving the security constraints is very challenging due to the requirements of accurate network model that may be unavailable in practice. This paper addresses the aforementioned challenge by proposing a topology-free optimal power dispatch framework for distribution networks. It utilizes building thermal inertia to provide flexibility to avoid additional investment. To guarantee the operation safety, a multi-layer perception (MLP) is trained based on historical operational data and then reformulated as mixed-integer constraints to replace the inexplicit original security constraints. Numerical results confirm that the proposed framework can derive a feasible and optimal strategy without any topology information.

Fast Monte Carlo Simulation of Dynamic Power Systems Under Continuous Random Disturbances

Continuous-time random disturbances from the renewable generation pose a significant impact on power system dynamic behavior. In evaluating this impact, the disturbances must be considered as continuous-time random processes instead of random variables that do not vary with time to ensure accuracy. Monte Carlo simulation (MCs) is a nonintrusive method to evaluate such impact that can be performed on commercial power system simulation software and is easy for power utilities to use, but is computationally cumbersome. Fast samplings methods such as Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) have been introduced to speed up sampling random variables, but yet cannot be applied to sample continuous disturbances. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes a fast MCs method that enables the LHS to speed up sampling continuous disturbances, which is based on the Itô process model of the disturbances and the approximation of the Itô process by functions of independent normal random variables. A case study of the IEEE 39-Bus System shows that the proposed method is 47.6 and 6.7 times faster to converge compared to the traditional MCs in evaluating the expectation and variance of the system dynamic response.

Nonintrusive Uncertainty Quantification of Dynamic Power Systems Subject to Stochastic Excitations

Continuous-time random disturbances (also called stochastic excitations) due to increasing renewable generation have an increasing impact on power system dynamics; However, except from the Monte Carlo simulation, most existing methods for quantifying this impact are intrusive, meaning they are not based on commercial simulation software and hence are difficult to use for power utility companies. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an efficient and nonintrusive method for quantifying uncertainty in dynamic power systems subject to stochastic excitations. First, the Gaussian or non-Gaussian stochastic excitations are modeled with an Itô process as stochastic differential equations. Then, the Itô process is spectrally represented by independent Gaussian random parameters, which enables the polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) of the system dynamic response to be calculated via an adaptive sparse probabilistic collocation method. Finally, the probability distribution and the high-order moments of the system dynamic response and performance index are accurately and efficiently quantified. The proposed nonintrusive method is based on commercial simulation software such as PSS/E with carefully designed input signals, which ensures ease of use for power utility companies. The proposed method is validated via case studies of IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus test systems.

Optimal Configuration of Wind-to-Ammonia with the Electric Network and Hydrogen Supply Chain: A Case Study of Inner Mongolia

Converting wind energy into ammonia (WtA) has been recognized as a promising pathway to enhance the usage of wind generation. This paper proposes a generic optimal configuration model of WtA at the network level to minimize the ammonia production cost by optimizing capacities and locations of WtA facilities including wind turbines, electrolyzers, hydrogen tanks and optimizing supply modes among regions. Specifically, the temporal fluctuation characteristics of wind resources, the operation flexibility of the ammonia synthesis reactor and the transport distances are considered. Three typical supply modes, i.e., the Local WtA, the EN (electric network)-based WtA and the HSC (hydrogen supply chain)-based WtA, combined with two energy transport modes including EN and HT (Hydrogen truck trailers) are included with the consideration of the maximal energy transport capacity of EN and transport distance per day of HT (500km). Real data of Inner Mongolia (a typical province in China with rich wind resources and existing ammonia industries) is employed to verify the effectiveness and significance of proposed model. The effect of above significant factors on optimal planning capacity of WtA facilities and optimal energy transport modes is analyzed, which provides guidelines for WtA configuration. The economic analysis shows that the average LCOA (levelized cost of ammonia) for WtA is approximately 0.57 euro/kg in Inner Mongolia and comparable to that for CtA (coal-to-ammonia, 0.41 euro/kg) with a reduction of 30% in capacity cost of the facilities.

Convex Relaxation of Combined Heat and Power Dispatch

Combined heat and power dispatch promotes interactions and synergies between electric power systems and district heating systems. However, nonlinear and nonconvex heating flow imposes significant challenges on finding qualified solutions efficiently. Most existing methods rely on constant flow assumptions to derive a linear heating flow model, sacrificing optimality for computational simplicity. This paper proposes a novel convex combined heat and power dispatch model based on model simplification and constraint relaxation, which improves solution quality and avoids assumptions on operating regimes of district heating systems. To alleviate mathematical complexity introduced by the commonly used node method, a simplified thermal dynamic model is proposed to capture temperature changes in networked pipelines. Conic and polyhedral relaxations are then applied to convexify the original problems with bilinear and quadratic equality constraints. Furthermore, an adaptive solution algorithm is proposed to successively reduce relaxation gaps based on dynamic bivariate partitioning, improving solution optimality with desirable computational efficiency. The proposed method is verified on a 33-bus electric power system integrated with a 30-node district heating system and compared to nonlinear programming solvers and constant-flow-based solutions.

Efficient Robust Dispatch of Combined Heat and Power Systems

Combined heat and power systems facilitate efficient interactions between individual energy sectors for higher renewable energy accommodation. However, the feasibility of operational strategies is difficult to guarantee due to the presence of substantial uncertainties pertinent to renewable energy and multi-energy loads. This paper proposes a novel efficient robust dispatch model of combined heat and power systems based on extensions of disturbance invariant sets. The approach has high computational efficiency and provides flexible and robust strategies with an adjustable level of conservativeness. In particular, the proposed robust dispatch method obtains operational strategies by solving a nominal uncertainty-free dispatch problem, whose complexity is identical to a deterministic problem. The robustness against uncertainties is enhanced by endowing the nominal dispatch model with properly tightened constraints considering time-variant uncertainty sets. Towards this end, a novel direct constraint tightening algorithm is developed based on the dual norm to calculate multi-period tightened constraints efficiently without linear programming iterations. Furthermore, the budget uncertainty set is newly combined with constraint tightening to flexibly adjust the conservativeness level of robust solutions. The effectiveness of the proposed robust method is demonstrated in simulation studies of a test system in terms of computational efficiency, decision robustness and cost optimality.

A State-Failure--Network Method to Identify Critical Components in Power Systems

In order to mitigate cascading failure blackout risks in power systems, the critical components whose failures lead to high blackout risks should be identified. In this paper, such critical components are identified by the state-failure network (SF-network) formed by cascading failure chain and loss data, which can be gathered from either utilities or simulations. The failures along the chains are recombined in the SF-network, where each failure is allocated a value that can reveal the blackout risks after their occurrences. Thus, critical failures can be identified in the SF-network where the failures raise up blackout risks, and thus the critical components can be found based on their critical failure risks. The simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-state Operating Reserve Model of Aggregate Thermostatically-Controlled-Loads for Power System Short-Term Reliability Evaluation

Thermostatically-controlled-loads (TCLs) have been regarded as a good candidate for maintaining the power system reliability by providing operating reserve. The short-term reliability evaluation of power systems, which is essential for power system operators in decision making to secure the system real time balancing, calls for the accurate modelling of operating reserve provided by TCLs. However, the particular characteristics of TCLs make their dynamic response different from the traditional generating units, resulting in difficulties to accurately represent the reliability of operating reserve provided by TCLs with conventional reliability model. This paper proposes a novel multi-state reliability model of operating reserve provided by TCLs considering their dynamic response during the reserve deployment process. An analytical model for characterizing dynamics of operating reserve provided by TCLs is firstly developed based on the migration of TCLs' room temperature within the temperature hysteresis band. Then, considering the stochastic consumers' behaviour and ambient temperature, the probability distribution functions of reserve capacity provided by TCLs are obtained by cumulants. On this basis, the states of reserve capacity and the corresponding probabilities at each time instant are obtained for representing the reliability of operating reserve provided by TCLs in the LZ-transform approach. Case studies are conducted to validate the proposed technique.

Optimal Control of DERs in ADN under Spatial and Temporal Correlated Uncertainties

The control schemes of distributed energy resources (DERs) in active distribution networks (ADNs) are largely influenced by uncertainties. The uncertainties of DERs are complicated, containing spatial and temporal correlation, which makes it challenging to design proper control schemes, especially when there exist temporal-correlated units such as energy units (EUs). This paper provides an Ito process model to describe the characteristics of stochastic resources and EUs in a unified way, which makes it easy to evaluate the impacts of stochastic resources on temporal-correlated units. Based the moment form of the Ito process model, a moment optimization (MO) approach is provided to transform the stochastic control (SC) problem into an optimization problem with respect to the first-order and second-order moments of the system variables. The scale of MO is comparable to that of the corresponding deterministic control problem, which means that the computational efficiency of MO is much smaller than that of traditional approaches. Case studies also show that the proposed approach outperforms existing approaches in both the performance and computational efficiency, which means that the proposed approach has attractive potential for use in large-scale applications.

Optimization of Hydrogen Yield of a High-Temperature Electrolysis System with Coordinated Temperature and Feed Factors at Various Loading Conditions: A Model-Based Study

High-temperature electrolysis (HTE) is a promising technology for achieving high-efficiency power-to-gas, which mitigates the renewable curtailment by transforming wind or solar energy into fuels. Different from low-temperature electrolysis, a considerable amount of the input energy is consumed by auxiliaries in an HTE system for maintaining the temperature, so the studies on systematic description and parameter optimization of HTE are essentially required. A few published studies investigated HTE's systematic optimization based on simulation, yet there is not a commonly used analytical optimization model which is more suitable for integration with power grid. To fill in this blank, a concise analytical operation model is proposed in this paper to coordinate the necessary power consumptions of auxiliaries under various loading conditions of an HTE system. First, this paper develops a comprehensive energy flow model for an HTE system based on the fundamentals extracted from the existing work, providing a quantitative description of the impacts of condition parameters, including the temperature and the feedstock flow rates. A concise operation model is then analytically proposed to search for the optimal operating states that maximize the hydrogen yield while meeting the desired system loading power by coordinating the temperature, the feedstock flows and the electrolysis current. The evaluation of system performance and the consideration of constraints caused by energy balances and necessary stack requirements are both included. In addition, analytical optimality conditions are obtained to locate the optimal states without performing nonlinear programming by further investigating the optimization method. A numerical case of an HTE system is employed to validate the proposed operation model, which proves to not only improve the conversion efficiency but also enlarge the system load range.

Maximum Production Point Tracking of a High-Temperature Power-to-Gas System: A Dynamic-Model-Based Study

Power-to-gas (P2G) can be employed to balance renewable generation because of its feasibility to operate at fluctuating loading power. The fluctuating operation of low-temperature P2G loads can be achieved by controlling the electrolysis current alone. However, this method does not apply to high-temperature P2G (HT-P2G) technology with auxiliary parameters such as temperature and feed rates: Such parameters need simultaneous coordination with current due to their great impact on conversion efficiency. To improve the system performance of HT-P2G while tracking the dynamic power input, this paper proposes a maximum production point tracking (MPPT) strategy and coordinates the current, temperature and feed rates together. In addition, a comprehensive dynamic model of an HT-P2G plant is established to test the performance of the proposed MPPT strategy, which is absent in previous studies that focused on steady states. The case study suggests that the MPPT operation responds to the external load command rapidly even though the internal transition and stabilization cost a few minutes. Moreover, the conversion efficiency and available loading capacity are both improved, which is definitely beneficial in the long run.

Optimal Control of AGC Systems Considering Non-Gaussian Wind Power Uncertainty

Wind power uncertainty poses significant challenges for automatic generation control (AGC) systems. It can enhance control performances to explicitly consider wind power uncertainty distributions within controller design. However, widely accepted wind uncertainties usually follow non-Gaussian distributions which may lead to complicated stochastic AGC modeling and high computational burdens. To overcome the issue, this paper presents a novel Ito-theory-based model for the stochastic control problem (SCP) of AGC systems, which reduces the computational burden of optimization considering non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty to the same scale as that for deterministic control problems. We present an Ito process model to exactly describe non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty, and then propose an SCP based on the concept of stochastic assessment functions (SAFs). Based on a convergent series expansion of the SAF, the SCP is reformulated as a certain deterministic control problem without sacrificing performance under non-Gaussian wind power uncertainty. The reformulated control problem is proven as a convex optimization which can be solved efficiently. A case study demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach compared with several conventional approaches.

Data-driven Chance-constrained Regulation Capacity Offering for Distributed Energy Resources

This paper studies the behavior of a strategic aggregator offering regulation capacity on behalf of a group of distributed energy resources (DERs, e.g. plug-in electric vehicles) in a power market. Our objective is to maximize the aggregator's revenue while controlling the risk of penalties due to poor service delivery. To achieve this goal, we propose data-driven risk-averse strategies to effectively handle uncertainties in: 1) The DER parameters (e.g., load demands and flexibilities) and 2) sub-hourly regulation signals (to the accuracy of every few seconds). We design both the day-ahead and the hour-ahead strategies. In the day-ahead model, we develop a two-stage stochastic program to roughly model the above uncertainties, which achieves computational efficiency by leveraging novel aggregate models of both DER parameters and sub-hourly regulation signals. In the hour-ahead model, we formulate a data-driven distributionally robust chance-constrained program to explicitly model the aforementioned uncertainties. This program can effectively control the quality of regulation service based on the aggregator's risk aversion. Furthermore, it learns the distributions of the uncertain parameters from empirical data so that it outperforms existing techniques, (e.g. robust optimization or traditional chance-constrained programming) in both modelling accuracy and cost of robustness. Finally, we derive a conic safe approximation for it which can be efficiently solved by commercial solvers. Numerical experiments are conducted to validate the proposed method.
