$^{139}$La nuclear quadrupole resonance studies of pressurized La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$

Density-wave (DW) orders are considered as competing orders to unconventional superconductivity and are commonly seen in a variety of superconductors including but not limited to the recently discovered Ruddlesden-Popper-phase nickelates. By utilizing $^{139}$La nuclear quadrupole resonance, we systematically investigate into the nature of DW orders and their evolution under pressure in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. Spin and charge DW orders are found to be intertwined in this material, which is in stark contrast to those in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Short-range DW orders are observed near 150 K, well above the development of long-range DW orders at around 139 K. Upon applying a hydrostatic pressure of 2.3 GPa, the transition temperatures of the short-range and long-range orders decrease at rates of 1 K/GPa and 10 K/GPa, respectively. Our results thus affirm that both spin density wave and charge density wave as competing orders with the superconducting state in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, and provide new insights into the interplay between DW orders and unconventional superconductivity.

Anomalous magnetocaloric effects in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$

We investigate the transverse-field thermodynamics of the quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet BaCo$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, whose tilted screw-chain geometry and anisotropic Landé $g$ tensor generate spatially modulated Zeeman couplings. Angle-resolved magnetocaloric-effect (MCE) measurements reveal a high-field temperature minimum near the transverse-field Ising critical field for $H\parallel[110]$ that persists and shifts only weakly upon field rotation. Tensor-network calculations show that the rotation-induced staggered transverse field rapidly lowers the Ising critical field and that the magnetic Grüneisen ratio changes sign near the high-field temperature minimum, consistent with experiment. Our results establish that a dominant MCE response can persist away from the Ising critical region, suggesting a route to magnetic cooling by tailoring anisotropic Zeeman-coupling configurations in quantum magnets.

Multiple superconducting phases and order-parameter evolution in pressurized UTe$_2$

The recently discovered heavy-fermion spin-triplet superconductor candidate UTe$_2$ provides a rich platform for unconventional pairing and topological phenomena. However, limited has been known about its superconducting order parameters and their evolution with control parameters, largely due to the lack of appropriate symmetry-sensitive detections. Here, we report comprehensive point-contact spectroscopy measurements of pressurized UTe$_2$ on the (0~0~1) surface. The observation of Andreev bound states strongly suggests the presence of a $p_z$ component in the superconducting order parameters. Quantitative analysis based on an extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model unveils the superconducting order parameters with a finite odd-$k_z$ component (e.g. $B_{2u}$ or $B_{3u}$) for both ambient and pressurized UTe$_2$. Remarkably, the multiple superconducting phases can be distinguished by a single parameter $\langle Δ_{z}\rangle/\langleΔ_{x(y)}\rangle$, the relative weight between the $p_z$-wave and $p_{x(y)}$-wave pairings. These findings place stringent constraints on the pairing symmetry and provide essential spectroscopic signatures for distinguishing pressure-induced multiple superconducting phases in UTe$_2$.

Tilted $p$-wave magnet candidate CeNiAsO

The unexpectedly small ordered moments of CeNiAsO, a candidate for correlated $p$-wave magnet, have posed a serious challenge to the precise determination of its magnetic structure, hindering the understanding of its fundamental properties. By leveraging the high sensitivity to local internal fields, our $^{75}$As nuclear quadrupole / magnetic resonance experiments reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic order with a small out-of-plane moment $m_z\approx0.05$ $μ_{\mathrm{B}}$. This tilted magnetic configuration not only rotates the spin polarization axis away from the crystallographic $\mathbf{c}$-axis, but also enhances the non-relativistic spin splitting. We refer to this rare paradigm as a \textit{tilted $p$-wave magnet}.

Possible inverse magnetic melting effect in vdW-like Kondo lattice CeSn$_{0.75}$Sb$_2$

Given the intimate connection between magnetic orders and the interplay among multiple degrees of freedom in heavy-fermion systems, controlling and understanding the associated inverse melting effect is crucial for unveiling novel condensed-matter states and their potential applications. Here, we report the growth of single crystalline quasi-two-dimensional van-der-Waals-like (vdW-like) Kondo lattice CeSn$_{0.75}$Sb$_2$, and its physical properties by a combination of transport / magnetic / thermodynamic measurements. We find that it hosts a fragile antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a cluster glass (CG) ground state, both of which are highly sensitive to external fields. Upon cooling under low in-plane magnetic fields, the AFM phase evolves into a polarized paramagnetic phase, either directly or indirectly through the intermediate CG phase. This process constitutes a possible inverse magnetic melting effect that restores the broken translational / rotational symmetries. Our work provides a rare paradigm of inverse magnetic melting effect in vdW-like heavy-fermion materials, and enriches the physics in conventional Kondo-lattice models.

Kondo-coupled van der Waals antiferromagnet with high-mobility quasiparticles

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) materials exhibit high carrier mobility and tunability, making them suitable for low-power, high-performance electronic and spintronic applications. Incorporating narrow-band electronic correlation effects could further promote tunability, though mass renormalization may impact carrier mobility. It is therefore challenging to identify a vdW material with both high mobility and strong correlation. Herein, by a combination of optical spectroscopy and high-field quantum-oscillation measurements, we observe significant effective-mass enhancement in CeTe$_3$ at low temperature, arising from not only the band-structure modulation by antiferromagnetic ordering but also the narrow-band correlation effect. Despite the mass enhancement, the quantum mobility surprisingly \textit{increases} and reaches $\sim$2403 cm$^2$/Vs, likely benefiting from topological protection. Remarkably, these unique properties are maintained in atomically thin nanoflakes with quantum mobility enhanced to $\sim$3158 cm$^2$/Vs. Thus, CeTe$_3$ emerges as a promising Kondo-coupled vdW antiferromagnetic metal with high-mobility quasiparticles, potentially unlocking new device concepts.

ScaleADFG: Affordance-based Dexterous Functional Grasping via Scalable Dataset

Dexterous functional tool-use grasping is essential for effective robotic manipulation of tools. However, existing approaches face significant challenges in efficiently constructing large-scale datasets and ensuring generalizability to everyday object scales. These issues primarily arise from size mismatches between robotic and human hands, and the diversity in real-world object scales. To address these limitations, we propose the ScaleADFG framework, which consists of a fully automated dataset construction pipeline and a lightweight grasp generation network. Our dataset introduce an affordance-based algorithm to synthesize diverse tool-use grasp configurations without expert demonstrations, allowing flexible object-hand size ratios and enabling large robotic hands (compared to human hands) to grasp everyday objects effectively. Additionally, we leverage pre-trained models to generate extensive 3D assets and facilitate efficient retrieval of object affordances. Our dataset comprising five object categories, each containing over 1,000 unique shapes with 15 scale variations. After filtering, the dataset includes over 60,000 grasps for each 2 dexterous robotic hands. On top of this dataset, we train a lightweight, single-stage grasp generation network with a notably simple loss design, eliminating the need for post-refinement. This demonstrates the critical importance of large-scale datasets and multi-scale object variant for effective training. Extensive experiments in simulation and on real robot confirm that the ScaleADFG framework exhibits strong adaptability to objects of varying scales, enhancing functional grasp stability, diversity, and generalizability. Moreover, our network exhibits effective zero-shot transfer to real-world objects. Project page is available at https://sizhe-wang.github.io/ScaleADFG_webpage

Rich unconventional Hall effects in a single quasi-kagome Kondo Weyl semimetal candidate Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$

It is generally believed that electronic correlation, geometric frustration, and topology, \textit{individually}, can facilitate the emergence of various intriguing properties that have attracted a broad audience for both fundamental research and potential applications. Here, we report a series of unconventional Hall effects observed in a \textit{single} compound - quasi-kagome Kondo Weyl semimetal candidate Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$. In the paramagnetic phase, signature of dynamic $c$-$f$ hybridization is revealed by a reduction of anomalous Hall effect and is connected to frustration-promoted incoherent Kondo scattering. A large topological Hall effect exceeding 0.2 $μΩ\cdot$cm is found at low temperatures, which should be ascribed to the non-collinear magnetic texture. In addition, a peculiar loop-shaped Hall effect with switching chirality is also seen, which is inferred to be associated with magnetic domain walls that pin history-dependent spin chirality and / or Fermi-arc surface states projected from the in-gap Weyl nodes. These exotic results place Ce$_3$TiSb$_5$ in a regime of highly-frustrated antiferromagnetic dense Kondo lattice with a nontrivial topology on an ``extended" global phase diagram, and highlight the interplay among electronic correlation, geometric frustration and topology.

Abnormal planar Hall effect and disentanglement of incoherent and coherent transport in a Kondo lattice

The nature of localized-itinerant transition in Kondo lattice systems remains a mystery despite intensive investigations in past decades. While it is often identified from the coherent peak in magnetic resistivity, recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and ultrafast optical spectroscopy revealed a precursor incoherent region with band bending and hybridization fluctuations. This raises the question of how the coherent heavy-electron state is developed from an incoherent background of fluctuating localized moments and then established at sufficiently low temperatures. Here, on the example of the quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice compound CeCo$_2$Ga$_8$, we show that planar Hall effect and planar anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements provide an effective way to disentangle the incoherent Kondo scattering contribution and the coherent heavy-electron contribution, and a multi-stage process is directly visualized with lowering temperature by their distinct angle-dependent patterns in magneto-transport. Our idea may be extended to other measurements and thereby opens up a pathway for systematically investigating the fundamental physics of Kondo lattice coherence.

Brain-inspired analogical mixture prototypes for few-shot class-incremental learning

Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) poses significant challenges for artificial neural networks due to the need to efficiently learn from limited data while retaining knowledge of previously learned tasks. Inspired by the brain's mechanisms for categorization and analogical learning, we propose a novel approach called Brain-inspired Analogical Mixture Prototypes (BAMP). BAMP has three components: mixed prototypical feature learning, statistical analogy, and soft voting. Starting from a pre-trained Vision Transformer (ViT), mixed prototypical feature learning represents each class using a mixture of prototypes and fine-tunes these representations during the base session. The statistical analogy calibrates the mean and covariance matrix of prototypes for new classes according to similarity to the base classes, and computes classification score with Mahalanobis distance. Soft voting combines both merits of statistical analogy and an off-shelf FSCIL method. Our experiments on benchmark datasets demonstrate that BAMP outperforms state-of-the-art on both traditional big start FSCIL setting and challenging small start FSCIL setting. The study suggests that brain-inspired analogical mixture prototypes can alleviate catastrophic forgetting and over-fitting problems in FSCIL.

Magnetic properties and enhanced magnetocaloric effect in EuAl$_3$Si single crystals

This study presents systematic investigations into the growth and physical properties of EuAl$_3$Si single crystals, encompassing magnetic, transport, and thermodynamic analyses. EuAl$_3$Si undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at $T_C$ = 15 K. A significant reversible magnetocaloric effect was observed around $T_C$. Strikingly, with a small change of magnetic field 2 T, the maximum values of magnetic entropy change (13.4 J/kg K), refrigerant capacity (166 J/kg) and adiabatic temperature change (7.2 K) are found. These parameters respectively are 60%, 148% and 64% larger than those of the parent compound EuAl$_4$, and suggest EuAl$_3$Si as an excellent candidate for magnetic refrigeration applications near the temperature of liquid hydrogen. The possible mechanism for this enhancement is also discussed.

Elastic properties of Cu-6wt\%Ag alloy wires for pulsed magnets investigated by ultrasonic techniques

Conductor materials with good mechanical performance as well as high electrical- and thermal-conductivities are particularly important to break through the current bottle-neck limit ($\sim 100$ T) of pulsed magnets. Here we perform systematic studies on the elastic properties of the Cu-6wt\%Ag alloy wires, a promising candidate material for the new-generation pulsed magnets, by employing two independent ultrasonic techniques - resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) and ultrasound pulse-echo experiments. Our RUS measurements manifest that the elastic properties of the Cu-6wt\%Ag alloy wires can be improved by an electroplastic drawing procedure as compared with the conventional cold drawing. We also take this chance to test the availability of our newly-built ultrasound pulse-echo facility at Wuhan National High Magnetic Field Center (WHMFC, China), and the results suggest that the elastic performance of the electroplastically-drawn Cu-6wt\%Ag alloy wire remains excellent without anomalous softening under extreme conditions, e.g., ultra-high magnetic field up to 50 T, nitrogen / helium cryogenic liquids.

$^{27}$Al NMR study of the magnetic Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

Motivated by the recent observations of electronic correlation effect [M. Corasaniti \textit{et al}., Phys. Rev. B \textbf{104}, L121112 (2021)] and topology-stabilized magnetic fluctuations [N. Drucker \textit{et al}., Nat. Commun. \textbf{14}, 5182 (2023)] in the noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal candidate CeAlGe, we performed systematic studies on the local static and dynamic spin susceptibilities by $^{27}$Al nuclear magnetic resonance. Due to the large spin susceptibility from Ce-$4f$ electrons, the theoretically predicted responses from Weyl fermions are overwhelmed. A Knight-shift anomaly is observed below $T^*\sim50$ K, a signature of the onset of coherent Kondo coupling. In addition, an anomalous peak is found in $1/T_1T$ near 15 K, well above the magnetic ordering temperature $T_N \approx 5$ K, which probably is a consequence of topology-stabilized magnetic fluctuations. These results highlight the interplay among electronic correlation, magnetism and band topology in this family of Kondo Weyl semimetals.

Discovery of a Magnetic Topological Semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a Single Pair of Weyl Points

Magnetic Weyl semimetal (MWS) is a unique topological state with open surface Fermi arc states and other exotic transport phenomena. However, most reported MWSs show multiple pairs of Weyl points and complicated Fermi surfaces, which increases the difficulty of the investigation into the intrinsic chiral transport property. In this wor, we successfully synthesized a soft magnetic Weyl semimetal Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points under magnetic fields. The Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) oscillation with a single frequency, as well as a linear hall resistance with the same carrier density, is observed up to 50 Tesla, indicating a single pair of Weyl points around the Fermi level with a massless fermion ($m^* = 0.121 m_0$, $π$ Berry phase). Such a single pair of Weyl points is further confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. The magnetic ordering and band topology can be easily tuned by the external magnetic field. The field-induced MWS Eu$_3$In$_2$As$_4$ with a single pair of Weyl points is a good platform to detect chiral transport properties, including possible quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Ultrasonic investigation of the Kondo semimetal CeBi

We report the elastic properties of the Kondo semimetal CeBi by resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements at zero magnetic field. Clear elastic softening is found in bulk modulus $C_B$ below $\sim 60$ K. Such a softening in $C_B$, in addition to the anomalous temperature dependent Poisson's ratio, is hardly attributable to multipolar response for stable localized $4f$ orbital, but can be well described by a two-band model arising from the hybridization between conduction- and $4f$- electrons. These results probably are consequences of the valence fluctuations in this Kondo semimetal as originally suggested by a Fermi-surface expansion observed in a previous angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study [P. Li \textit{et al.}, Phys. Rev. B $\mathbf{100}$, 155110 (2019)].

Synthesis and physical properties of Ce$_2$Rh$_{3+δ}$Sb$_4$ single crystals

Millimeter-sized Ce$_2$Rh$_{3+δ}$Sb$_4$ ($δ\approx 1/8$) single crystals were synthesized by a Bi-flux method and their physical properties were studied by a combination of electrical transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. The resistivity anisotropy $ρ_{a,b}/ρ_{c}\sim2$, manifesting a quasi-one-dimensional electronic character. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm $\mathbf{ab}$ as the magnetic easy plane. A long-range antiferromagnetic transition occurs at $T_N=1.4$ K, while clear short-range ordering can be detected well above $T_N$. The low ordering temperature is ascribed to the large Ce-Ce distance as well as the geometric frustration. Kondo scale is estimated to be about 2.4 K, comparable to the strength of magnetic exchange. Ce$_2$Rh$_{3+δ}$Sb$_4$, therefore, represents a rare example of dense Kondo lattice whose Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida exchange and Kondo coupling are both weak but competing.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Measurements in High Flat-top Pulsed Magnetic Field up to 40 T at WHMFC

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique benefits from high magnetic field not only due to the field-enhanced measurement sensitivity and resolution, but also because it is a powerful tool to investigate field-induced physics in modern material science. In this study, we successfully performed NMR measurements in high flat-top pulsed magnetic field (FTPMF) up to 40 T. A two-stage corrected FTPMF with fluctuation less than 10 mT and duration longer than 9 ms was established. Besides, a Giga-Hz NMR spectrometer and a sample probe suitable for pulsed-field condition were developed. Both free-induction-decay and spin-echo sequences were exploited for the measurements. The derived $^{93}$Nb NMR results show that the stability and homogeneity of the FTPMF reach an order of 10$^2$ ppm / 10 ms and 10$^2$ ppm / 10 mm$^3$ respectively, which is approaching a degree of maturity for some researches on condensed matter physics.

Progressive Transfer Learning for Dexterous In-Hand Manipulation with Multi-Fingered Anthropomorphic Hand

Dexterous in-hand manipulation for a multi-fingered anthropomorphic hand is extremely difficult because of the high-dimensional state and action spaces, rich contact patterns between the fingers and objects. Even though deep reinforcement learning has made moderate progress and demonstrated its strong potential for manipulation, it is still faced with certain challenges, such as large-scale data collection and high sample complexity. Especially, for some slight change scenes, it always needs to re-collect vast amounts of data and carry out numerous iterations of fine-tuning. Remarkably, humans can quickly transfer learned manipulation skills to different scenarios with little supervision. Inspired by human flexible transfer learning capability, we propose a novel dexterous in-hand manipulation progressive transfer learning framework (PTL) based on efficiently utilizing the collected trajectories and the source-trained dynamics model. This framework adopts progressive neural networks for dynamics model transfer learning on samples selected by a new samples selection method based on dynamics properties, rewards and scores of the trajectories. Experimental results on contact-rich anthropomorphic hand manipulation tasks show that our method can efficiently and effectively learn in-hand manipulation skills with a few online attempts and adjustment learning under the new scene. Compared to learning from scratch, our method can reduce training time costs by 95%.
