Effective Lagrangian for strong and electromagnetic interactions of high-spin resonances

Recent experiments of photon-nucleon and meson-nucleon scatterings have accumulated a lot of data for various meson production processes. One of the purposes of those experiments is to search for the missing resonances which are not discovered until now but whose existence was predicted by hadron models. The analyses of the data requires the development of dynamical coupled-channel models. Since several missing resonances are expected to have spin higher than 3/2, we need to include higher-spin resonances in dynamical coupled-channel models, which enable us to determine the couplings of effective Lagrangians of higher-spin baryons with pseudoscalar mesons or vector mesons. However, hadron models, such as quark models, give predictions only of the decay amplitudes of such baryons. Here we demonstrate the formalism of high-spin resonances and construct the relation between the coupling constants of effective Lagrangians and the partial decay widths that can be predicted by hadron models. This allows us to compare the coupling constants to the hadron model predictions not only in magnitude but in sign as well.

Independence of current components, polarization vectors, and reference frames in the light-front quark model analysis of meson decay constants

The issue of resulting in the same physical observables with different current components, in particular from the minus current, has been challenging in the light-front quark model (LFQM) even for the computation of the two-point functions such as meson decay constants. At the level of one-body current matrix element computation, we show the uniqueness of pseudoscalar and vector meson decay constants using all available components including the minus component of the current in the LFQM consistent with the Bakamjian-Thomas construction. Regardless of the current components, the polarization vectors, and the reference frames, the meson decay constants are uniquely determined in the non-interacting constituent quark and antiquark basis while the interactions of the constituents are added to the meson mass operator in the LFQM.

Radiative proton capture on $^{15}\mathrm{N}$ within effective field theory

The astrophysical $S$ factor for the radiative proton capture process on the $^{15}\mathrm{N}$ nucleus, i.e., $^{15}\mathrm{N}(p, γ)^{16}\mathrm{O}$, at stellar energies are studied within the framework of the cluster effective field theory. The thermonuclear $^{15}\mathrm{N}(p, γ)^{16}\mathrm{O}$ reaction links the type-I to type-II cycles of the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycle and affects the abundances of elements in the univere. For investigating this reaction in the effective field theory formalism, we first construct an effective Lagrangian that is appropriate for this reaction at low-energies. Since the intermediate excited states of the $^{16}\mathrm{O}$ nucleus have a crucial role in this reaction, we include these resonances in the formalism. The corresponding radiative capture amplitudes and cross section are calculated, which lead to the astrophysical $S$ factor. The low energy constants introduced in the effective Lagrangian are determined by fitting the theoretical results to the observed $S$ factors in the range of $130~\mathrm{keV} < E_p < 2500~\mathrm{keV}$ using three different experimental data sets. Considering the recent data sets, we obtain $S(0) = 29.8\mbox{-}34.1~\mathrm{keV\ b}$, which is in a good agreement with the estimates from $R$-matrix approaches in the literature. The values of $S$ at the Gamow energy are found to be larger than $S(0)$ values by about $10\%$.

Models of $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon

The $J/Ψ$ photo-production reactions on the nucleon can provide information on the roles of gluons in determining the $J/Ψ$-nucleon ($J/Ψ$-N) interactions and the structure of the nucleon. The information on the $J/Ψ$-N interactions is needed to test lattice QCD (LQCD) calculations and to understand the nucleon resonances such as $N^*(P_c)$ recently reported by the LHCb Collaboration. In addition, it is also needed to investigate the production of nuclei with hidden charms and to extract the gluon distributions in nuclei. The main purpose of this article is to review six reaction models of $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions which have been and can be applied to analyze the data from Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab). The formulae for each model are given and used to obtain the results to show the extent to which the available data can be described. The models presented include the Pomeron-exchange model of Donnachie and Landshoff (Pom-DL) and its extensions to include $J/Ψ$-N potentials extracted from LQCD (Pom-pot) and to also use the constituent quark model (CQM) to account for the quark substructure of $J/Ψ$ (Pom-CQM). The other three models are developed from applying the perturbative QCD approach to calculate the two-gluon exchange using the generalized parton distribution (GPD) of the nucleon (GPD-based), two- and three-gluon exchanges using the parton distribution of the nucleon ($2g+3g$), and the exchanges of scalar ($0^{++}$) and tensor ($2^{++}$) glueballs within the holographic formulation (holog). The results of investigating the excitation of the nucleon resonances $N^*(P_c)$ in the $γ+ p \rightarrow J/Ψ+p$ reactions are also given.

Mixing effects on 1S and 2S state heavy mesons in the light-front quark model

The mass spectra and wave functions of both $1S$ and $2S$ state heavy pseudoscalar ($P$) and vector ($V$) mesons are analyzed within the light-front quark model. Important empirical constraints employed in our analysis of the mass spectra and wave functions are the experimental mass-gap relation, $ΔM_P > ΔM_V$, where $ΔM_{P(V)}=M^{2S}_{P(V)}-M^{1S}_{P(V)}$ and the hierarchy of the decay constants, $f_{1S}>f_{2S}$, between $1S$ and $2S$ meson states. We maintain the orthogonality of the trial wave functions of the $1S$ and $2S$ states in our variational calculation of the Hamiltonian with the Coulomb plus confining potentials and treat the hyperfine interaction perturbatively for the heavy-heavy and heavy-light $P$ and $V$ mesons due to the nature of the heavy quark symmetry. Realizing that the empirical constraints cannot be satisfied without mixing of the $1S$ and $2S$ states, we find the lower bound of the mixing angle $θ$ between $1S$ and $2S$ states as $θ_c = {\rm cot}^{-1}(2\sqrt{6})/2\simeq 6^{\circ}$ and obtain the optimum value of the mixing angle around $12^\circ$ to cover both the charm and bottom flavors of the heavy quark. The mixing effects are found to be more significant to the $2S$ state mesons than to the $1S$ state mesons. The properties of $1S$ and $2S$ state mesons including the mass spectra, decay constants, twist-2 distribution amplitudes, and electromagnetic form factors are computed. Our results are found to be in a good agreement with the available data and lattice simulations. In particular, the $2S$ state pseudoscalar $D_s$ meson is predicted to have a mass of $2600$ MeV, which is very close to the mass of the newly discovered $D_{s0}(2590)^+$ meson by the LHCb Collaboration. This supports the interpretation of the observed state as a radial excitation of the $D^+_s$ meson.

Strong decays of multi-strangeness baryon resonances in the quark model

Decay properties of multi-strangeness $Ξ$ and $Ω$ baryon resonances are investigated within the constituent quark model by including relativistic corrections. The strong decay widths of various $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are computed and tested for internal quark configurations to pin down their spin-parity ($J^P$) quantum numbers and internal structures. We found that the Roper-like resonances in the multi-strangeness sector have large decay widths bearing resemblances to their siblings in light and heavy baryon sectors. In addition, we obtained the decay ratio for the $Ω(2012)$ as $Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K} π)} / Γ{(Ω\to Ξ\bar{K})}=4.5\%$, which is consistent with the experimental data when $J^P=3/2^-$ is assigned. This observation holds the possibility that the $Ω(2012)$ could naturally be explained as a three-quark state in the quark model. The decays of other low-lying $Ξ$ and $Ω$ resonances are systematically analyzed, which would be useful to unveil the structure of these resonances in future experiments.

Analysis of virtual meson production in solvable (1+1) dimensional scalar field theory

Light-front time-ordered amplitudes are investigated in the virtual scalar meson production process in (1+1) dimensions using the solvable scalar field theory extended from the conventional Wick-Cutkosky model. There is only one Compton form factor (CFF) in the (1+1) dimensional computation of the virtual meson production process, and we compute both the real and imaginary parts of the CFF for the entire kinematic regions of $Q^2>0$ and $t<0$. We then analyze the contribution of each and every light-front time-ordered amplitude to the CFF as a function of $Q^2$ and $t$. In particular, we discuss the significance of the "cat's ears" contributions for gauge invariance and the validity of the "handbag dominance" in the formulation of the generalized parton distribution (GPD) function used typically in the analysis of deeply virtual meson production processes. We explicitly derive the GPD from the "handbag" light-front time-ordered amplitudes in the $-t/Q^2<<1$ limit and verify that the integrations of the GPD over the light-front longitudinal momentum fraction for the DGLAP and ERBL regions correspond to the valence and nonvalence contributions of the electromagnetic form factor that we have recently reported [Phys. Rev. D $\textbf{103}$, 076002 (2021)]. We also discuss the correspondence of the GPD to the parton distribution function for the analysis of the deep inelastic lepton-hadron scattering process and the utility of the new light-front longitudinal spatial variable $\tilde{z}$.

Dynamical model of $ϕ$ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and $^4He$

We investigate $ϕ$ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and the \nuclide[4]{He} targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron-exchange, meson-exchanges, $ϕ$ radiations, and nucleon resonance excitations mechanisms. The final $ϕN$ interactions are included being described by the gluon-exchange, direct $ϕN$ couplings, and the box-diagrams arising from the couplings with $πN$, $ρN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of $γp \to ϕp$ from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent $ϕ$-meson production on the \nuclide[4]{He} targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final $ϕN$ rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the \nuclide[4]{He} targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. The role of each mechanism in this reaction is discussed and predictions for a wide range of scattering angles are presented, which can be tested in future experiments.

Light-front dynamic analysis of the longitudinal charge density using the solvable scalar field model in (1+1) dimensions

We investigate the electromagnetic form factor $F(q^2)$ of the meson by using the solvable $ϕ^{3}$ scalar field model in $(1+1)$ dimensions. As the transverse rotations are absent in $(1+1)$ dimensions, the advantage of the light-front dynamics (LFD) with the light-front time $x^+ = x^0 + x^3$ as the evolution parameter is maximized in contrast to the usual instant form dynamics (IFD) with the ordinary time $x^0$ as the evolution parameter. In LFD, the individual $x^+$-ordered amplitudes contributing to $F(q^2)$ are invariant under the boost, i.e., frame-independent, while the individual $x^0$-ordered amplitudes in IFD are not invariant under the boost but dependent on the reference frame. The LFD allows to get the analytic result for the one-loop triangle diagram which covers not only the spacelike ($q^{2}<0$) but also timelike region ($q^{2}>0$). Using the analytic results, we verify that the real and imaginary parts of the form factor satisfy the dispersion relations in the entire $q^{2}$ space. Comparing with the results in $(3+1)$ dimensions, we discuss the transverse momentum effects on $F(q^2)$ . We also discuss the longitudinal charge density in terms of the boost invariant variable $\tilde z = p^+ x^-$ in LFD.

Charmed hadron production in an improved quark coalescence model

We study the production of charmed hadrons $D^{0}$ and $Λ_c^+$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions using an improved quark coalescence model. In particular, we extend the usual coalescence model by letting a produced hadron to have the same velocity as the center-of-mass velocity of coalesced constituent quarks during hadronization to take into account the effect of collective flow in produced quark-gluon plasma. This results in a shift of charmed resonances of higher masses to larger transverse momenta ($p_T^{}$). Requiring all charm quarks of very low $p_T^{}$ to be converted to hadrons via coalescence and letting charm quarks not undergoing coalescence to hadronize by independent fragmentation, we obtain a good description of the measured yield ratio $Λ_c^+/D^0$ as a function of $p_T^{}$ in $\text{Au} + \text{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}^{}=200$~GeV by the STAR Collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider.

Valence-quark distributions of pions and kaons in a nuclear medium

In-medium valence-quark distributions of $π^+$ and $K^+$ mesons in symmetric nuclear matter are studied by combining the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the quark-meson coupling model. The in-medium properties of the current quarks, which are used as inputs for studying the in-medium pion and kaon properties in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, are calculated within the quark-meson coupling model. The light-quark condensates, light-quark dynamical masses, pion and kaon decay constants, and pion- and kaon-quark coupling constants are found to decrease as nuclear density increases. The obtained valence quark distributions in vacuum for both the $π^+$ and $K^+$ could reasonably describe the available experimental data over a wide range of Bjorken-$x$. The in-medium valence $u$-quark distribution in the $π^+$ at $Q^2=16~\mbox{GeV}^2$ is found to be almost unchanged compared to the in-vacuum case. However, the in-medium to in-vacuum ratios of both the valence $u$-quark and valence $s$-quark distributions of the $K^+$ meson at $Q^2=16~\mbox{GeV}^2$ increase with nuclear matter density, but show different $x$-dependence. Namely, the ratio for the valence $u$-quark distribution increases with $x$, while that for the valence $s$ quark decreases with $x$. These features are enhanced at higher density regions.

From homogeneous matter to finite nuclei: Role of the effective mass

Recent astronomical observations, nuclear-reaction experiments, and microscopic calculations have placed new constraints on the nuclear equation of state (EoS) and revealed that most nuclear structure models fail to satisfy those constraints upon extrapolation to infinite matter. A reverse procedure for imposing EoS constraints on nuclear structure has been elusive. Here we present for the first time a method to generate a microscopic energy density functional (EDF) for nuclei from a given immutable EoS. The method takes advantage of a natural Ansatz for homogeneous nuclear matter, the Kohn-Sham framework, and the Skyrme formalism. We apply it to the realistic nuclear EoS of Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall and describe successfully closed-(sub)shell nuclei. In the process, we provide predictions for the neutron skin thickness of nuclei based directly on the given EoS. Crucially, bulk and static nuclear properties are found practically independent of the assumed effective mass value - a unique result in bridging EDF of finite and homogeneous systems in general.

Effects of medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino scattering in dense matter

Effects of the in-medium modifications of nucleon form factors on neutrino interaction in dense matter are presented by considering both the weak and electromagnetic interactions of neutrinos with the constituents of the matter. A relativistic mean field and the quark-meson coupling models are respectively adopted for the effective nucleon mass and in-medium nucleon form factors. We calculate the cross-section of neutrino scattering as well as the neutrino mean free path. We found the cross sections of neutrino scattering in cold nuclear medium decreases when the in-medium modifications of the nucleon weak and electromagnetic form factors are taken into account. This reduction results in the enhancement of the neutrino mean free path, in particular at the baryon density of around a few times of the normal nuclear matter density.

Pion structure in a nuclear medium

The structure and electroweak properties of the pion in symmetric nuclear matter are presented in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The pion is described as a bound state of a dressed quark-antiquark pair governed by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current-light-quark properties we use the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully the properties of hadron in a nuclear medium. We found that the light-quark condensates, the pion decay constant and pion-quark coupling constant decrease with increasing nuclear matter density. We then predict the modifications of the charge radius of the charged pion in nuclear matter.

Analysis of nuclear structure in a converging expansion scheme

In the framework of the KIDS generalized energy density functional (EDF), the nuclear equation of state (EoS) is expressed as an expansion in powers of the Fermi momentum or the cubic root of the density ($ρ^{1/3}$). Although an optimal number of converging terms was obtained in specific cases of fits to empirical data and pseudodata, the degree of convergence remains to be examined not only for homogeneous matter but also for finite nuclei. One goal of the present work is to validate the minimal and optimal number of EoS parameters required for the description of homogeneous nuclear matter over a wide range of densities relevant for astrophysical applications. The major goal is to examine the validity of the adopted expansion scheme for an accurate description of finite nuclei. To this end we vary the values of the high-order derivatives of the EoS, namely the skewness of the energy of symmetric nuclear matter and the kurtosis of the symmetry energy, at saturation and examine the relative importance of each term in $ρ^{1/3}$ expansion for homogeneous matter. For given sets of EoS parameters determined in this way, we define equivalent Skyrme-type functionals and examine the convergence in the description of finite nuclei focusing on the masses and charge radii of closed-shell nuclei. The EoS of symmetric nuclear matter is found to be efficiently parameterized with only 3 parameters and the symmetry energy (or the energy of pure neutron matter) with 4 parameters when the EoS is expanded in the power series of the Fermi momentum. Higher-order EoS parameters do not produce any improvement, in practice, in the description of nuclear ground-state energies and charge radii, which means that they cannot be constrained by bulk properties of nuclei.

Electroweak properties of pions in a nuclear medium

The charge form factor and weak decay constant of the pion as well as the pion-quark coupling constant in symmetric nuclear matter are explored in the framework of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, where the pion is described as a bound state of dressed quark-antiquark pair obtained by the Bethe-Salpeter equation. For the in-medium current quark properties, we adopt the quark-meson coupling model, which describes successfully many hadron properties in a nuclear medium. The pion decay constant and the pion-quark coupling constant are found to decrease with increasing density as well as the magnitude of the light quark condensate. But the pion mass is found to be insensitive to density up to $1.25$ times the normal nuclear density. The pion charge form factor in the space-like region is also explored and is found to have a similar $Q^2$ dependence as the form factor in vacuum showing $1/Q^2$-behavior in large $Q^2$ region, where $Q^2$ is the negative of the four-momentum transfer squared. The modifications of the charge radius of the charged pion in nuclear matter are then estimated and the root-mean-square radius at the normal nuclear density is predicted to be larger than that in vacuum by about 20\%.

Theory of two-pion photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon

A theory of two-pion photo- and electroproduction off the nucleon is derived considering all explicit three-body mechanisms of the interacting $ππN$ system. The full three-body dynamics of the interacting $ππN$ system is accounted for by the Faddeev-type ordering structure of the Alt-Grassberger-Sandhas equations. The formulation is valid for hadronic two-point and three-point functions dressed by arbitrary internal mechanisms provided all associated electromagnetic currents are constructed to satisfy their respective (generalized) Ward-Takahashi identities. It is shown that coupling the photon to the Faddeev structure of the underlying hadronic two-pion production mechanisms results in a natural expansion of the full two-pion photoproduction current $M_{ππ}^μ$ in terms of multiple dressed loops involving two-body subsystem scattering amplitudes of the $ππN$ system that preserves gauge invariance as a matter of course order by order in the number of (dressed) loops. A closed-form expression is presented for the entire gauge-invariant current $M_{ππ}^μ$ with complete three-body dynamics. Individually gauge-invariant truncations of the full dynamics most relevant for practical applications at the no-loop, one-loop, and two-loop levels are discussed in detail. An approximation scheme to the full two-pion amplitude for calculational purposes is also presented. It approximates, systematically, the full amplitude to any desired order of expansion in the underlying hadronic two-body amplitude. Moreover, it allows for the approximate incorporation of all neglected higher-order mechanisms in terms of a phenomenological remainder current. The effect and phenomenological usefulness of this remainder current is assessed in a tree-level calculation of the $γN \to K K Ξ$ reaction.

Analysis of the $b_1$ meson decay in local tensor bilinear representation

We explore the validity of vector meson dominance in the radiative decay of the $b_1(1235)$ meson. In order to explain the violation of the vector meson dominance hypothesis in this decay process, we investigate a model where the $b_1$ meson strongly couples with the local current in tensor bilinear representation. The tensor representation is investigated in the framework of the operator product expansion and we found a low energy decay process that does not follow the usual vector meson dominance hypothesis. The $ω$-like intermediate meson state of quantum numbers $I^G(J^{PC}) = 0^{-}(1^{--})$ is found to have a nontrivial role in the decay process of the $b_1$ meson. The spectral structure of the $ω$-like state is found to be close to a $π$-$ρ$ hybrid state, which provides a mechanism that evades the usual vector meson dominance hypothesis. Precise measurements of various decay channels of the $b_1$ meson are, therefore, required to unravel the internal structure of axial vector mesons.
