Strongly anisotropic vortices in dipolar quantum droplets

We construct strongly anisotropic quantum droplets with embedded vorticity in the 3D space, with mutually perpendicular vortex axis and polarization of atomic magnetic moments. Stability of these anisotropic vortex quantum droplets (AVQDs) is verified by means of systematic simulations. Their stability area is identified in the parametric plane of the total atom number and scattering length of the contact interactions. We also construct vortex-antivortex-vortex bound states and find their stability region in the parameter space. The application of a torque perpendicular to the vorticity axis gives rise to robust intrinsic oscillations or rotation of the AVQDs. The effect of three-body losses on the AVQD stability is considered too. The results show that the AVQDs can retain the topological structure (vorticity) for a sufficiently long time if the scattering length exceeds a critical value.

Energy-level inversion for vortex states in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We investigate vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates under the combined action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), gradient magnetic field, and harmonic-oscillator trapping potential. The linear version of the system is solved exactly. Through the linear-spectrum analysis, we find that, varying the SOC strength and magnetic-field gradient, one can perform energy-level inversion. With suitable parameters, initial higher-order vortex states can be made the ground state (GS). The nonlinear system is solved numerically, revealing that the results are consistent with the linear predictions in the case of repulsive inter-component interactions. On the other hand, inter-component attraction creates the GS in the form of mixed-mode states in a vicinity of the GS phase-transition points. The spin texture of both vortex- and mixed-mode GSs reveals that they feature the structure of 2D (baby) skyrmions.

Domain formation and universally critical dynamics through phase separation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We explore the defect formation and universally critical dynamics in two-dimensional (2D) two-component Bose-Einstein condensates(BECs) subjected to two types of potential traps: a homogeneous trap and a harmonic trap.We focus on the non-equilibrium universal dynamics of the miscible-immiscible phase transition with both linear and nonlinear quenching types.Although there exists spatial independence of the critical point, we find that the inhomogeneity of trap doesn't affect the phase transition of system and the critical exponents can still be explained by the homogeneous Kibble-Zurek mechanism. By analyzing the Bogoliubov excitations, we establish a power-law relationship between the domain correlation length, the phase transition delay, and the quench time.Furthermore, through real-time simulations of phase transition dynamics, the formation of domain defects and the delay of phase transition in non-equilibrium dynamics are demonstrated, along with the corresponding universal scaling of correlation length and phase transition delay for various quench time and quench coefficients, which align well with our analytical predictions. Our study confirms that the universality class of two-component BECs remains unaffected by dimensionality, while the larger nonlinear coefficients effectively suppress non-adiabatic excitations, offering a novel perspective for addressing adiabatic evolution.

Ring-shaped quantum droplets with hidden vorticity in a radially-periodic potential

We study the stability and characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) circular quantum droplets (QDs) with embedded hidden vorticity (HV), i.e., opposite angular momenta in two components, formed by binary Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) trapped in a radially-periodic potential. The system is modeled by the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations with the Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) terms, which represent the higher-order self-repulsion induced by quantum fluctuations around the meanfield state, and a potential which is a periodic function of the radial coordinate. Ring-shaped QDs with high winding numbers (WNs) of the HV type, which are trapped in particular circular troughs of the radial potential, are produced by means of the imaginary-time-integration method. Effects of the depth and period of the potential on these QD states are studied. The trapping capacity of individual circular troughs is identified. Stable compound states in the form of nested multiring patterns are constructed too, including ones with WNs of opposite signs. The stably coexisting ringshaped QDs with different WNs can be used for the design of BEC-based data-storage schemes.

Semidiscrete optical vortex droplets in quasi-phase-matched photonic crystals

A new scheme for producing semidiscrete self-trapped vortices (\textquotedblleft swirling photon droplets\textquotedblright ) in photonic crystals with competing quadratic ($χ^{(2)}$) and self-defocusing cubic ($χ^{(3)}$) nonlinearities is proposed. The photonic crystal is designed with a striped structure, in the form of spatially periodic modulation of the $χ^{(2)}$ susceptibility, which is imposed by the quasi-phase-matching technique. Unlike previous realizations of semidiscrete optical modes in composite media, built as combinations of continuous and arrayed discrete waveguides, the semidiscrete vortex droplets are produced here in the fully continuous medium. This work reveals that the system supports two types of semidiscrete vortex droplets, \textit{viz}., onsite- and intersite-centered ones, which feature, respectively, odd and even numbers of stripes, $\mathcal{N}$. Stability areas for the states with different values of $\mathcal{N}$ are identified in the system's parameter space. Some stability areas overlap with each others, giving rise to multistability of states with different $\mathcal{N}$. The coexisting states are mutually degenerate, featuring equal values of the Hamiltonian and propagation constant. An experimental scheme to realize the droplets is outlined, suggesting new possibilities for the long-distance transmission of structured light carrying orbital angular momentum in nonlinear media.

Two-dimensional anisotropic vortex quantum droplets in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Creation of stable intrinsically anisotropic self-bound states with embedded vorticity is a challenging issue. Previously, no such states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) or other physical settings were known. Dipolar BEC suggests a unique possibility to predict stable anisotropic vortex quantum droplets (AVQDs). We demonstrate that they can be created with the vortex' axis oriented \emph{perpendicular} to the polarization of dipoles. The stability area and characteristics of the AVQDs in the parameter space are revealed by means of analytical and numerical methods. Further, the rotation of the polarizing magnetic field is considered, and the largest angular velocities, up to which spinning AVQDs can follow the rotation in clockwise and anti-clockwise directions, are found. Collisions between moving AVQDs are studied too, demonstrating formation of bound states with a vortex-antivortex-vortex structure. A stability domain for such stationary bound states is identified. Unstable dipolar states, that can be readily implemented by means of phase imprinting, quickly transform into robust AVQDs, which suggests a straightforward possibility for the creation of these states in the experiment.

Vortex solitons in quasi-phase-matched photonic crystals

We report solutions for stable compound solitons in a three-dimensional quasi-phase-matched photonic crystal with the quadratic ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity. The photonic crystal is introduced with a checkerboard structure, which can be realized by means of the available technology. The solitons are built as four-peak vortex modes of two types, rhombuses and squares (intersite- and onsite-centered self-trapped states, respectively). Their stability areas are identified in the system's parametric space (rhombuses occupy an essentially broader stability domain), while all bright vortex solitons are subject to strong azimuthal instability in uniform $χ^{(2)}$ media. Possibilities for experimental realization of the solitons are outlined.

Universality in nonlinear passage through the miscible-immiscible phase transition in two component Bose-Einstein condensates

In this study, we investigate the formation of domain defects and the universal critical real-time dynamics in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with nonlinear quenching across the miscible-immiscible phase transition. By analyzing the Bogoliubov excitations, we obtain the power-law relations among the defect density, the phase transition delay and the quench time near the phase transition. Moreover, by simulating the real-time dynamics across the miscible-immiscible phase transition, we clearly show the formation of domain defects and the delay of the phase transition. Furthermore, we find that the domain defects are suppressed by large nonlinear coefficients and long quench times. To accurately characterize the domain defects, we quantify the defect excitations using the correlation length and the domain number. In addition, by combining the power-law relations between the phase transition delay and the quench time, we extract the critical exponents for different nonlinear coefficients. Our study not only confirms that the critical exponents do not sensitively depend on the nonlinear quenches but also provides a dynamic path toward the suppression of nonadiabatic excitation.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of dual-layer solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

It is known that stable 2D solitons of the semi-vortex (SV) and mixed-mode (MM) types are maintained by the interplay of the cubic attractive nonlinearity and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in binary Bose-Einstein condensates. We introduce a double-layer system, in which two binary condensates, stabilized by the SOC, are linearly coupled by tunneling. By means of the numerical methods, it is found that symmetric two-layer solitons undergo the spontaneous-symmetry-breaking (SSB) bifurcation of the subcritical type. The bifurcation produces families of asymmetric 2D solitons, which exist up to the value of the total norm equal to the norm of the Townes solitons, above which the collapse occurs. This situation terminates at a critical value of the inter-layer coupling, beyond which the SSB bifurcation is absent, as the collapse sets in earlier. Symmetric 2D solitons that are destabilized by the SSB demonstrate dynamical symmetry breaking, in combination with intrinsic oscillations of the solitons, or transition to the collapse, if the soliton's norm is sufficiently large. Asymmetric MMs produced by the SSB instability start spontaneous drift, in addition to the intrinsic vibrations. Consideration of moving 2D solitons is a nontrivial problem because SOC breaks the Galilean invariance. It is found that the system supports moving MMs up to a critical value of the velocity, beyond which they undergo delocalization.

Vortex gap solitons in spin-orbit-coupled Bose-Einstein condensates with competing nonlinearities

The formation and dynamics of full vortex gap solitons (FVGSs) is investigated in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), Zeeman splitting (ZS), and competing cubic and quintic nonlinear terms, while the usual kinetic energy is neglected, assuming that it is much smaller than the SOC and ZS terms. Unlike previous SOC system with the cubic-only attractive nonlinearity, in which solely semi-vortices may be stable, with the vorticity carried by a single component, the present system supports stable FVGS states, with the vorticity present in both components (such states are called here full vortex solitons, to stress the difference from the half-vortices). They populate the bandgap in the system's linear spectrum. In the case of the cubic self-attraction and quintic repulsion, stable FVGSs with a positive effective mass exist near the top of the bandgap. On the contrary, the system with cubic self-repulsion and quintic attraction produces stable FVGSs with a negative mass near the bottom of the bandgap. Mobility and collisions of FVGSs with different topological charges are investigated too.

Stability limits for modes held in alternating trapping-expulsive potentials

We elaborate a scheme of trapping-expulsion management (TEM), in the form of the quadratic potential periodically switching between confinement and expulsion, as a means of stabilization of two-dimensional dynamical states against the backdrop of the critical collapse driven by the cubic self-attraction with strength g. The TEM scheme may be implemented, as spatially or temporally periodic modulations, in optics or BEC, respectively. The consideration is carried out by dint of numerical simulations and variational approximation (VA). In terms of the VA, the dynamics amounts to a nonlinear Ermakov equation, which, in turn, is tantamount to a linear Mathieu equation. Stability boundaries are found as functions of g and parameters of the periodic modulation of the trapping potential. Below the usual collapse threshold, which is known, in the numerical form, as g < 5.85 (in the standard notation), the stability is limited by the onset of the parametric resonance. This stability limit, including the setup with the self-repulsive sign of the cubic term (g < 0), is accurately predicted by the VA. At g > 5.85, the collapse threshold is found with the help of full numerical simulations. The relative increase of the critical value of g above 5.85 is ~ 1.5%, which is a meaningful result, even if its size is small, because the collapse threshold is a universal constant, which is difficult to change.

Fano effect induced giant and robust enhancement of photon correlations in cavity QED systems

Fano effect arising from interference between two dissipation channels to the radiation continuum enables to tune the photon statistics. Understanding the role of Fano effect and exploiting to achieve strong photon correlations are of both fundamental and applied significance. We present an analytical description of Fano-enhanced photon correlations based on cavity quantum electrodynamics to show that, the Fano effect in atom-cavity systems can improve the degree of antibunching by over four orders of magnitude. The enhancement factors and the optimal conditions are explicitly given, and found related to the Fano parameter $q$. Remarkably, the Fano enhancement manifests robustness against the decoherence processes, and can survive in the weak coupling regime. We expect our work to provide insight in tuning the photon statistics through Fano effect, which offers a new route to enhance the photon correlations, as well as the possibility of generating nonclassical light in a wider diversity of systems without the need of strong light-matter interaction.

Single-photon blockade in quasichiral atom-photon interaction: Simultaneous high purity and high efficiency

We investigate the single-photon blockade (1PB) in the quasichiral regime of atom-photon interaction that mediates via dissipative environment, where the effective atom-photon interaction is asymmetrical but achiral. The synthetic magnetic current in the closed-loop coupling breaks down the reciprocity of atom-photon interaction, resulting in an asymmetrical and even completely unidirectional effective coupling between two selected quantum states. As an example, we couple the single-atom cavity-QED (cQED) system to a strongly dissipative auxiliary cavity. We find that in the quasichiral regime, the unconventional photon blockade (UPB) always incorporates with the conventional photon blockade (CPB) in the condition of maximum chirality. Furthermore, we show that 1PB in the quasichiral regime combines the advantages of UPB and CPB, demonstrating the perfect single-photon purity, higher efficiency, smooth time dynamics as well as lower requirement of modes coupling to achieve UPB. Our work paves the way for 1PB towards practical applications and reveals the intriguing quantum-optics phenomena in the quasichiral light-matter interaction.

Geometric phase with full-wedge and half-wedge rotation in nonlinear frequency conversion

When the quasi-phase matching (QPM) parameters of the $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear crystal rotate along a closed path, geometric phase will be generated in the signal and idler waves that participate in the nonlinear frequency conversion. In this paper, we study two rotation schemes, full-wedge rotation, and half-wedge rotation, of the QPM parameters in the process of fully nonlinear three-wave mixing. These two schemes can effectively suppress the uncertainty in creating the geometric phase in the nonlinear frequency conversion process when the intensity of the pump is depleted. The finding of this paper provides an avenue toward constant control of the geometric phase in nonlinear optics applications and quantum information processing.

Variational quantum compiling with double Q-learning

Quantum compiling aims to construct a quantum circuit V by quantum gates drawn from a native gate alphabet, which is functionally equivalent to the target unitary U. It is a crucial stage for the running of quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. However, the space for structure exploration of quantum circuit is enormous, resulting in the requirement of human expertise, hundreds of experimentations or modifications from existing quantum circuits. In this paper, we propose a variational quantum compiling (VQC) algorithm based on reinforcement learning (RL), in order to automatically design the structure of quantum circuit for VQC with no human intervention. An agent is trained to sequentially select quantum gates from the native gate alphabet and the qubits they act on by double Q-learning with ε-greedy exploration strategy and experience replay. At first, the agent randomly explores a number of quantum circuits with different structures, and then iteratively discovers structures with higher performance on the learning task. Simulation results show that the proposed method can make exact compilations with less quantum gates compared to previous VQC algorithms. It can reduce the errors of quantum algorithms due to decoherence process and gate noise in NISQ devices, and enable quantum algorithms especially for complex algorithms to be executed within coherence time.

Semidiscrete vortex solitons

We demonstrate a possibility of the creation of stable optical solitons combining one continuous and one discrete coordinate, with embedded vorticity, in an array of planar waveguides with intrinsic cubic-quintic nonlinearity. The same system may be realized in terms of the spatiotemporal light propagation in an array of tunnel-coupled optical fibers with the cubic-quintic nonlinearity. In contrast with zero-vorticity states, semidiscrete vortex solitons do not exist without the quintic term in the nonlinearity. Two types of the solitons, \emph{viz.}, intersite- and onsite-centered ones (IC and OC, respectively), with even and odd numbers $N$ of actually excited sites in the discrete direction, are identified. We consider the modes carrying the embedded vorticity $S=1$ and $2$. In accordance with their symmetry, the vortex solitons of the OC type exhibit an intrinsic core, while the IC solitons with a small $N$ may have a coreless structure. Facilitating their creation in the experiment, the modes reported in the present work may be much more compact states than their counterparts considered in other systems, and they feature strong anisotropy. They can be set in motion in the discrete direction, provided that the coupling constant exceeds a certain minimum value. Collisions between moving vortex solitons are considered too.

A new form of liquid matter: quantum droplets

This brief review summarizes recent theoretical and experimental results which predict and establish the existence of quantum droplets (QDs), i.e., robust two- and three-dimensional (2D and 3D) self-trapped states in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), which are stabilized by effective selffirepulsion induced by quantum fluctuations around the mean-field (MF) states [alias the Lee-Huang--Yang (LHY) effect]. The basic models are presented, taking special care of the dimension crossover, 2D -> 3D. Recently reported experimental results, which exhibit stable 3D and quasi-2D QDs in binary BECs, with the inter-component attraction slightly exceeding the MF self-repulsion in each component, and in single-component condensates of atoms carrying permanent magnetic moments, are presented in some detail. The summary of theoretical results is focused, chiefly, on 3D and quasi-2D QDs with embedded vorticity, as the possibility to stabilize such states is a remarkable prediction. Stable vortex states are presented both for QDs in free space, and for singular but physically relevant 2D modes pulled to the center by the inverse-square potential, with the quantum collapse suppressed by the LHY effect.

Quantum droplets in two-dimensional optical lattices

We study the stability of zero-vorticity and vortex lattice quantum droplets (LQDs), which are described by a two-dimensional (2D) Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation with a periodic potential and Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) term. The LQDs are divided in two types: onsite-centered and offsitecentered LQDs, the centers of which are located at the minimum and the maximum of the potential, respectively. The stability areas of these two types of LQDs with different number of sites for zerovorticity and vorticity with S = 1 are given. We found that the u-N relationship of the stable LQDs with a fixed number of sites can violate the Vakhitov-Kolokolov (VK) criterion, which is a necessary stability condition for nonlinear modes with an attractive interaction. Moreover, the u-N relationship shows that two types of vortex LQDs with the same number of sites are degenerated, while the zero-vorticity LQDs are not degenerated. It is worth mentioning that the offsite-centered LQDs with zero-vorticity and vortex LQDs with S = 1 are heterogeneous.
