Large Area Survey for z=7 Galaxies in SDF and GOODS-N: Implications for Galaxy Formation and Cosmic Reionization

We present results of our large-area survey for z'-band dropout galaxies at z=7 in a 1568 arcmin^2 sky area covering the SDF and GOODS-N fields. Combining our ultra-deep Subaru/Suprime-Cam z'- and y-band (lambda_eff=1um) images with legacy data of Subaru and HST, we have identified 22 bright z-dropout galaxies down to y=26, one of which has a spectroscopic redshift of z=6.96 determined from Lya emission. The z=7 luminosity function (LF) yields the best-fit Schechter parameters of phi*=0.69 +2.62/-0.55 x10^(-3) Mpc^(-3), Muv*=-20.10 +/-0.76 mag, and alpha=-1.72 +/-0.65, and indicates a decrease from z=6 at a >95% confidence level. This decrease is beyond the cosmic variance in our two fields, which is estimated to be a factor of <~2. We have found that the cosmic star formation rate density drops from the peak at z=2-3 to z=7 roughly by a factor of ~10 but not larger than ~100. A comparison with the reionization models suggests either that the Universe could not be totally ionized by only galaxies at z=7, or more likely that properties of galaxies at z=7 are different from those at low redshifts having, e.g., a larger escape fraction (>~0.2), and/or a flatter IMF. Our SDF z-dropout galaxies appear to form 60-Mpc long filamentary structures, and the z=6.96 galaxy with Lya emission is located at the center of an overdense region consisting of four UV bright dropout candidates, which might suggest an existence of a well-developed ionized bubble at z=7.

Structural Transition of Li2RuO3 Induced by Molecular-Orbit Formation

A pseudo honeycomb system Li2RuO3 exhibits a second-order-like transition at temperature T=Tc=540 K to a low-T nonmagnetic phase with a significant lattice distortion forming Ru-Ru pairs. For this system, we have calculated the band structure, using the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in both the high- and low- T phases, and found that the results of the calculation can naturally explain the insulating behavior observed in the low-T phase. The detailed characters of the Ru 4d t2g bands obtained by the tight-binding fit to the calculated dispersion curves show clear evidence that the structural transition is driven by the formation of the Ru-Ru molecular-orbits, as proposed in our previous experimental studies.

Discovery of a Giant Lya Emitter Near the Reionization Epoch

We report the discovery of a giant Lya emitter (LAE) with a Spitzer/IRAC counterpart near the reionization epoch at z=6.595. The giant LAE is found from the extensive 1 deg^2 Subaru narrow-band survey for z=6.6 LAEs in the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field, and subsequently identified by deep spectroscopy of Keck/DEIMOS and Magellan/IMACS. Among our 207 LAE candidates, this LAE is not only the brightest narrow-band object with L(Lya) = 3.9+/-0.2 x 10^43 erg/s in our survey volume of 10^6 Mpc^3, but also a spatially extended Lya nebula with the largest isophotal area whose major axis is at least ~3''. This object is more likely to be a large Lya nebula with a size of >~17 kpc than to be a strongly-lensed galaxy by a foreground object. Our Keck spectrum with medium-high spectral and spatial resolutions suggests that the velocity width is v(FWHM)=251+/-21 km/s, and that the line-center velocity changes by ~60 km/s in a 10-kpc range. The stellar mass and star-formation rate are estimated to be 0.9-5.0 x 10^10 Mo and >34 Mo/yr, respectively, from the combination of deep optical to infrared images of Subaru, UKIDSS-Ultra Deep Survey, and Spitzer/IRAC. Although the nature of this object is not yet clearly understood, this could be an important object for studying cooling clouds accreting onto a massive halo, or forming-massive galaxies with significant outflows contributing to cosmic reionization and metal enrichment of inter-galactic medium.

A close relationship at z~2: submillimetre galaxies and BzK-selected galaxies

We investigate the relationship between two massive star-forming galaxy populations at redshift z~ 2; i.e. submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) and BzK-selected galaxies (BzKs). Out of 60 SMGs found in the Subaru/XMM-Newton deep field, we collect optical--NIR photometry of 28 radio counterparts for 24 SMGs, based on refined sky positions with a radio map for 35 SMGs (Ivison et al. 2007). We find a correlation between their K-band magnitudes and BzK [= (z-K)-(B-z)] colours: almost all of the K-faint (K_AB > 21.3) radio-detected SMGs have BzK>-0.2, and therefore BzKs. This result gives strong support to perform direct optical identification of SMGs by searching for BzKs around SMGs. We calculate the formal significance (P' value) for each of the BzK associations around radio-undetected SMGs, and find 6 new robust identifications, including one double identification. From this analysis, we obtain the current best estimate on the surface density of BzK-selected SMGs, which indicates that only ~1 per cent of BzKs are SMGs. If BzKs are normal disk-like galaxies at z~ 2 as indicated by the correlation between their star formation rate (SFR) and stellar mass and also by dynamical properties, SMGs are likely to be merging BzKs. In this case, a typical enhancement of SFR due to merging is only a factor of ~ 3, which is an order of magnitude lower than that of local ULIRGs. This may indicate that most of the merging BzKs could be observed as SMGs. Considering a possible high fraction of mergers at z~ 2 (at least it would be higher than the fraction at z> 1 of ~ 10 per cent), it is rather puzzling to find such a low fraction of SMGs in the progenitor population, i.e. BzKs.

Superconductivity and Spin gap in the zigzag chain t-J model simulating a CuO double chain in Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-delta

Using the numerical diagonalization method, we examine the one-dimensional t_1-t_2-J_1-J_2 model (zigzag chain t-J model) which represents an effective model for metallic CuO double chain in the superconductor Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-δ. Based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we calculate the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_ρas a function of electron density n. It is found that superconductivity is realized in parameter region corresponding to the experimental result. We show phase diagram of spin gap on the t_2/|t_1|-n plane by analyzing the expectation value of twist-operator Z_σin the spin sector. The spin gap appears in the region with large t_2/|t_1|, where the phase boundary at half-filling is consistent with that of the known frustrated quantum spin system. The analysis also suggests that the estimated value of the spin gap reaches 100K in the realistic parameter region of Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-delta.

Phonon softening and double-well potential formation due to electron-phonon interaction in heavy-fermion systems

We investigate the periodic Anderson-Holstein model by using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the exact diagonalization method. For the strong electron-phonon coupling $g\simg g_c$, the system shows an anomalous heavy-fermion behaviour which is accompanied by a large lattice fluctuation and an extreme phonon softening. We also calculate an effective potential for the ions and find that a simple harmonic potential for $g\siml g_c$ changes into a double-well potential for $g\simg g_c$. The effective pairing interaction between the conduction electrons shows a maximum at $g \approx g_c$ where the superconducting transition temperature is expected to be maximum.

Superconductivity in the CuO double chain of Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-delta on the basis of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory

Recently, Matsukawa et al. have discovered a new superconductor Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-delta in which metallic CuO double chains are responsible for the superconductivity. To investigate the superconductivity, we employ the d-p double chain model where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. On the basis of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we obtain the phase diagram including the superconducting phase in the weak coupling limit. We also calculate the Luttinger liquid parameter K_rho as a function of the electron density $n$ by using the Hartree-Fock approximation. With increasing $n$ from quarter filling, K_rho increases, and then exceeds 1/2 when the superconducting correlation becomes most dominant. K_rho has a maximum at an optimal density between quarter- and half-filling. These results are consistent with the experimental observation.

Combined Analysis of Numerical Diagonalization and Renormalization Group methods for the One-Dimensional $U$-$V$ Model at Quarter filling

The one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with both the on-site $U$ and the nearest neighbor $V$ interactions at quarter filling is studied by using a novel finite size scaling. We diagonalize finite size systems numerically and calculate the Luttinger-liquid parameter $K_ρ$ which is substituted into the renormalization group equation as an initial condition. It leads $K_ρ$ in the infinite size system and the result agrees very well with the available exact result with $U=\infty$. This approach also yields the charge gap in the insulating state near the metal-insulator transition where the characteristic energy becomes exponentially small and the usual finite size scaling is not applicable.

Nonlinear Sigma model method for the J1-J2 Heisenberg model: disordered ground state with plaquette symmetry

A novel nonlinear sigma model method is proposed for the two-dimensional J1-J2 model, which is extended to include plaquette-type distortion. The nonlinear sigma model is properly derived without spoiling the original spin degrees of freedom. The method shows that a single disordered phase continuously extends from a frustrated uniform regime to an unfrustrated distorted regime. By the continuity and Oshikawa's commensurability condition, the disordered ground states for the uniform J1-J2 model are plaquette states with four-fold degeneracy.

Ferromagnetism and Superconductivity in the multi-orbital Hubbard Model: Hund's Rule Coupling versus Crystal-Field Splitting

The multi-orbital Hubbard model in one dimension is studied using the numerical diagonalization method. Due to the effect of the crystal-field splitting $Δ$, the fully polarized ferromagnetism which is observed in the strong coupling regime becomes unstable against the partially polarized ferromagnetism when the Hund's rule coupling $J$ is smaller than a certain critical value of order of $Δ$. In the vicinity of the partially polarized ferromagnetism, the orbital fluctuation develops due to the competition between the Hund's rule coupling and the crystal-field splitting. The superconducting phase with the Luttinger liquid parameter $K_ρ>1$ is observed for the singlet ground state in this region.

Superconductivity of the One-Dimensional d-p Model with p-p transfer

Using the numerical diagonalization method, we investigate the one-dimensional $d$-$p$ model, simulating a Cu-O linear chain with strong Coulomb repulsions. Paying attention to the effect of the transfer energy $t_{pp}$ between the nearest neighbor oxygen-sites, we calculate the critical exponent of correlation functions $K_ρ$ based on the Luttinger liquid relations and the ground state energy $E_0(ϕ)$ as a function of an external flux $ϕ$. We find that the transfer $t_{pp}$ increases the charge susceptibility and the exponent $K_ρ$ in cooperation with the repulsion $U_{d}$ at Cu-site. We also show that anomalous flux quantization occurs for $K_ρ>1$. The superconducting region is presented on a phase diagram of $U_{d}$ vs. $t_{pp}$ plane.

Metamagnetism and Fermi Surface in the Anderson Lattice Model

We investigate magnetization as functions of external magnetic field $H$ in the $U$-infinite Anderson lattice model within the leading order approximation in the $1/N$-expansion. At $T=0$, at $H=H_M$ where the Zeeman energy is equal to a certain characteristic energy in the system, the magnetization curve has a kink and the differential susceptibility $dM/dH$ shows a jump. At finite temperature, $dM/dH$ shows a peak around $H_M$. Its maximum value increases with decreasing $T$ and saturates to a finite value at $T\to 0$. When $H H_M$, the bands reform themselves significantly free from the Luttinger sum rule, eventually leading to a small Fermi surface at $H \gg H_M$. The results are consistent with the metamagnetic properties observed in the heavy fermion CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.
