First Spectroscopic Evidence for High Ionization State and Low Oxygen Abundance in Lya Emitters

We present results from Keck/NIRSPEC and Magellan/MMIRS follow-up spectroscopy of Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=2.2 identified in our Subaru narrowband survey. We successfully detect Ha emission from seven LAEs, and perform a detailed analysis of six LAEs free from AGN activity, two out of which, CDFS-3865 and COSMOS-30679, have [OII] and [OIII] line detections. They are the first [OII]-detected LAEs at high-z, and their [OIII]/[OII] ratios and R23-indices provide the first simultaneous determinations of ionization parameter and oxygen abundance for LAEs. CDFS-3865 has a very high ionization parameter (q_{ion}=2.5^{+1.7}_{-0.8}x10^8 cm s^{-1}) and a low oxygen abundance (12+log(O/H)=7.84^{+0.24}_{-0.25}) in contrast with moderate values of other high-z galaxies such as Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). COSMOS-30679 also possesses a relatively high ionization parameter (q_{ion}=8^{+10}_{-4}x10^7 cm s^{-1}) and a low oxygen abundance (12+log(O/H)=8.18^{+0.28}_{-0.28}). Both LAEs appear to fall below the mass-metallicity relation of z~2 LBGs. Similarly, a low metallicity of 12+log(O/H)<8.4 is independently indicated for typical LAEs from a composite spectrum and the [NII]/Ha index. Such high ionization parameters and low oxygen abundances can be found in local star-forming galaxies, but this extreme local population occupies only ~0.06% of the SDSS spectroscopic galaxy sample with a number density ~100 times smaller than that of LAEs. With their high ionization parameters and low oxygen abundances, LAEs would represent an early stage of galaxy formation dominated by massive stars in compact star-forming regions. High-q_{ion} galaxies like LAEs would produce ionizing photons efficiently with a high escape fraction achieved by density-bounded HII regions, which would significantly contribute to cosmic reionization at z>6.

New Constraints on Cosmic Reionization from the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field Campaign

Understanding cosmic reionization requires the identification and characterization of early sources of hydrogen-ionizing photons. The 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF12) campaign has acquired the deepest infrared images with the Wide Field Camera 3 aboard Hubble Space Telescope and, for the first time, systematically explored the galaxy population deep into the era when cosmic microwave background (CMB) data indicates reionization was underway. The UDF12 campaign thus provides the best constraints to date on the abundance, luminosity distribution, and spectral properties of early star-forming galaxies. We synthesize the new UDF12 results with the most recent constraints from CMB observations to infer redshift-dependent ultraviolet (UV) luminosity densities, reionization histories, and electron scattering optical depth evolution consistent with the available data. Under reasonable assumptions about the escape fraction of hydrogen ionizing photons and the intergalactic medium clumping factor, we find that to fully reionize the universe by redshift z~6 the population of star-forming galaxies at redshifts z~7-9 likely must extend in luminosity below the UDF12 limits to absolute UV magnitudes of M_UV\sim -13 or fainter. Moreover, low levels of star formation extending to redshifts z~15-25, as suggested by the normal UV colors of z\simeq7-8 galaxies and the smooth decline in abundance with redshift observed by UDF12 to z\simeq10, are additionally likely required to reproduce the optical depth to electron scattering inferred from CMB observations.

Gas Motion Study of Lya Emitters at z~2 Using UV and Optical Spectral Lines

We present the results of Magellan/MMIRS and Keck/NIRSPEC spectroscopy for five Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=2.2 for which high-resolution FUV spectra from Magellan/MagE are available. We detect nebular emission lines including Ha on the individual basis and low-ionization interstellar (LIS) absorption lines in a stacked FUV spectrum, and measure average offset velocities of the Lya line, Delta_v_Lya, and LIS absorption lines, Delta_v_abs, with respect to the systemic velocity defined by the nebular lines. For a sample of eight z~2-3 LAEs without AGN from our study and the literature, we obtain Delta_v_Lya = 175+/-35 km s^{-1}, which is significantly smaller than that of Lyman-break Galaxies (LBGs), Delta_v_Lya=400 km s^{-1}. The stacked FUV spectrum gives Delta_v_abs = -179 +/- 73 km s^{-1}, comparable to that of LBGs. These positive Delta_v_Lya and negative Delta_v_abs suggest that LAEs also have outflows. In contrast to LBGs, however, the LAEs' Delta_v_Lya is as small as |Delta_v_abs|, suggesting low neutral hydrogen column densities. Such a low column density with a small number of resonant scattering may cause the observed strong Lya emission of LAEs. We find an anti-correlation between Lya equivalent width (EW) and Delta_v_Lya in a compilation of LAE and LBG samples. Although its physical origin is not clear, this anti-correlation result appears to challenge the hypothesis that a strong outflow, by means of a reduced number of resonant scattering, produces a large EW. If LAEs at z>6 have similarly small Delta_v_Lya values, constraints on the reionization history derived from the Lya transmissivity may need to be revised.

The UV Luminosity Function of star-forming galaxies via dropout selection at redshifts z ~ 7 and 8 from the 2012 Ultra Deep Field campaign

We present a catalog of high redshift star-forming galaxies selected to lie within the redshift range z ~ 7-8 using the Ultra Deep Field 2012 (UDF12), the deepest near-infrared (near-IR) exposures yet taken with the Hubble Space Telescope. As a result of the increased near-infrared exposure time compared to previous HST imaging in this field, we probe 0.65 (0.25) mag fainter in absolute UV magnitude, at z ~ 7 (8), which increases confidence in a measurement of the faint end slope of the galaxy luminosity function. Through a 0.7 mag deeper limit in the key F105W filter that encompasses or lies just longward of the Lyman break, we also achieve a much-refined color-color selection that balances high redshift completeness and a low expected contamination fraction. We improve the number of drop-out selected UDF sources to 47 at z ~ 7 and 27 at z ~ 8. Incorporating brighter archival and ground-based samples, we measure the z ~ 7 UV luminosity function to an absolute magnitude limit of M_UV = -17 and find a faint end Schechter slope of α= -1.87+/- 0.18. Using a similar color-color selection at z ~ 8 that takes account of our newly-added imaging in the F140W filter, and incorporating archival data from the HIPPIES and BoRG campaigns, we provide a robust estimate of the faint end slope at z ~ 8, α= -1.94 +/- 0.23. We briefly discuss our results in the context of earlier work and that derived using the same UDF12 data but with an independent photometric redshift technique (McLure et al 2012).

Evolution of the Sizes of Galaxies over 7<z<12 Revealed by the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field Campaign

We analyze the redshift- and luminosity-dependent sizes of dropout galaxy candidates in the redshift range z~7-12 using deep images from the UDF12 campaign, data which offers two distinct advantages over that used in earlier work. Firstly, we utilize the increased S/N ratio offered by the UDF12 imaging to provide improved size measurements for known galaxies at z=6.5-8 in the HUDF. Specifically, we stack the new deep F140W image with the existing F125W data in order to provide improved measurements of the half-light radii of z-dropouts. Similarly we stack this image with the new deep UDF12 F160W image to obtain new size measurements for a sample of Y-dropouts. Secondly, because the UDF12 data have allowed the construction of the first robust galaxy sample in the HUDF at z>8, we have been able to extend the measurement of average galaxy size out to significantly higher redshifts. Restricting our size measurements to sources which are now detected at >15sigma, we confirm earlier indications that the average half-light radii of z~7-12 galaxies are extremely small, 0.3-0.4 kpc, comparable to the sizes of giant molecular associations in local star-forming galaxies. We also confirm that there is a clear trend of decreasing half-light radius with increasing redshift, and provide the first evidence that this trend continues beyond z~8. Modeling the evolution of the average half-light radius as a power-law (1+z)^s, we obtain a best-fit index of s=-1.28+/-0.13 over the redshift range z~4-12, mid-way between the physically expected evolution for baryons embedded in dark halos of constant mass (s=-1) and constant velocity (s=-1.5). A clear size-luminosity relation, such as that found at lower redshift, is also evident in both our z- and Y-dropout sample. This relation can be interpreted in terms of a constant surface density of star formation over a range in luminosity of 0.05-1.0L*_z=3.(abridged)

The 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF12): Observational Overview

We present the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field campaign (UDF12), a large 128-orbit Cycle 19 \HST\ program aimed at extending previous WFC3/IR observations of the UDF by quadrupling the exposure time in the F105W filter, imaging in an additional F140W filter, and extending the F160W exposure time by 50%. The principal scientific goal of this project is to determine whether galaxies reionized the universe; our observations are designed to provide a robust determination of the star formation density at $z$$\,\gtrsim\,$8, improve measurements of the ultraviolet continuum slope at $z$$\,\sim\,7\,-\,$8, facilitate the construction of new samples of $z$$\,\sim\,9\,-\,$10 candidates, and enable the detection of sources up to $z$$\,\sim\,$12. For this project we committed to combining these and other WFC3/IR imaging observations of the UDF area into a single homogeneous dataset, to provide the deepest near-infrared observations of the sky currently achievable. In this paper we present the observational overview of the project, motivated by its scientific goals, and describe the procedures used in reducing the data as well as the final products that are produced. We have used the most up up-to-date methods for calibrating and combining the images, in particular paying attention to correcting several instrumental effects. We release the full combined mosaics, comprising a single, unified set of mosaics of the UDF, providing the deepest near-infrared blank-field view of the universe obtained to date, reaching magnitudes as deep as AB$\,\sim\,$30 in the near-infrared, and yielding a legacy dataset on this field of lasting scientific value to the community.

The Abundance of Star-Forming Galaxies in the Redshift Range 8.5 to 12: New Results from the 2012 Hubble Ultra Deep Field Campaign

We present the results of the deepest search to date for star-forming galaxies beyond a redshift z~8.5 utilizing a new sequence of near-infrared Wide Field Camera 3 images of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. This `UDF12' campaign completed in September 2012 doubles the earlier exposures with WFC3/IR in this field and quadruples the exposure in the key F105W filter used to locate such distant galaxies. Combined with additional imaging in the F140W filter, the fidelity of high redshift candidates is greatly improved. Using spectral energy distribution fitting techniques on objects selected from a deep multi-band near-infrared stack we find 7 promising z>8.5 candidates. As none of the previously claimed UDF candidates with 8.5 10 galaxies with JWST.

Nebular Attenuation in Hα-selected Star-forming Galaxies at z=0.8 from the NewHα Survey

We present measurements of the dust attenuation of Hα-selected emission-line galaxies at z=0.8 from the NewHα narrowband survey. The analysis is based on deep follow-up spectroscopy with Magellan/IMACS, which captures the strong rest-frame optical emission lines from [OII] λ3727 to [OIII] λ5007. The spectroscopic sample used in this analysis consists of 341 confirmed Hα emitters. We place constraints on the AGN fraction using diagnostics which can be applied at intermediate redshift. We find that at least 5% of the objects in our spectroscopic sample can be classified as AGN and 2% are composite, i.e. powered by a combination of star-formation and AGN activity. We measure the dust attenuation for individual objects from the ratios of the higher order Balmer lines. The Hβ and Hγ pair of lines is detected with S/N>5 in 55 individual objects and the Hβ and Hδ pair is detected in 50 individual objects. We also create stacked spectra to probe the attenuation in objects without individual detections. The median attenuation at Hα based on the objects with individually detected lines is A(Hα)=0.9+-1.0 magnitudes, in good agreement with the attenuation found in local samples of star-forming galaxies. We find that the z=0.8 galaxies occupy a similar locus of attenuation as a function of magnitude, mass and SFR as a comparison sample drawn from the SDSS DR4. Both the results from the individual z=0.8 galaxies and from the stacked spectra show consistency with the mass -- attenuation and SFR -- attenuation relations found in the local Universe, indicating that these relations are also applicable at intermediate redshift.

Heavy-Electron Formation and Bipolaronic Transition in the Anharmonic Holstein Model

The emergence of the bipolaronic phase and the formation of the heavy-electron state in the anharmonic Holstein model are investigated using the dynamical mean-field theory in combination with the exact diagonalization method. For a weak anharmonicity, it is confirmed that the first-order polaron-bipolaron transition occurs from the observation of a discontinuity in the behavior of several physical quantities. When the anharmonicity is gradually increased, the polaron-bipolaron transition temperature is reduced as well as the critical values of the electron-phonon coupling constant for polaron-bipolaron transition. For a strong anharmonicity, the polaron-bipolaron transition eventually changes to a crossover behavior. The effect of anharmonicity on the formation of the heavy-electron state near the polaron-bipolaron transition and the crossover region is discussed in detail.

Average Metallicity and Star Formation Rate of Lya Emitters Probed by a Triple Narrow-Band Survey

We present the average metallicity and star-formation rate of Lya emitters (LAEs) measured from our large-area survey with three narrow-band (NB) filters covering the Lya, [OII]3727, and Ha+[NII] lines of LAEs at z=2.2. We select 919 z=2.2 LAEs from Subaru/Suprime-Cam NB data in conjunction with Magellan/IMACS spectroscopy. Of these LAEs, 561 and 105 are observed with KPNO/NEWFIRM near-infrared NB filters whose central wavelengths are matched to redshifted [OII] and Ha nebular lines, respectively. By stacking the near-infrared images of the LAEs, we successfully obtain average nebular-line fluxes of LAEs, the majority of which are too faint to be identified individually by narrow-band imaging or deep spectroscopy. The stacked object has an Ha luminosity of 1.7x10^{42} erg s^{-1} corresponding to a star formation rate (SFR) of 14 M_{sun} yr^{-1}. We place, for the first time, a firm lower limit to the average metallicity of LAEs of Z>~0.09 Z_{sun} (2sigma) based on the [OII]/(Ha+[NII]) index together with photo-ionization models and empirical relations. This lower limit of metallicity rules out the hypothesis that LAEs, so far observed at z~2, are extremely metal poor (Z<2x10^{-2} Z_{sun}) young galaxies at the 4sigma level. This limit is higher than a simple extrapolation of the observed mass-metallicity relation of z~2 UV-selected galaxies toward lower masses (5x10^{8} M_{sun}), but roughly consistent with a recently proposed fundamental mass-metallicity relation when the LAEs' relatively low SFR is taken into account. The Ha and Lya luminosities of our NB-selected LAEs indicate that the escape fraction of Lya photons is ~12-30 %, much higher than the values derived for other galaxy populations at z~2.

Spectroscopic Confirmation of Three z-Dropout Galaxies at z = 6.844 - 7.213: Demographics of Lyman-Alpha Emission in z ~ 7 Galaxies

We present the results of our ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy of z-dropout galaxies in the SDF and GOODS-N. For 3 out of 11 objects, we detect an emission line at ~ 1um with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~ 10. The lines show asymmetric profiles with high weighted skewness values, consistent with being Lya, yielding redshifts of z=7.213, 6.965, and 6.844. Specifically, we confirm the z=7.213 object in two independent DEIMOS runs with different spectroscopic configurations. The z=6.965 object is a known Lya emitter, IOK-1, for which our improved spectrum at a higher resolution yields a robust skewness measurement. The three z-dropouts have Lya fluxes of 3 x 10^-17 erg s^-1 cm^-2 and rest-frame equivalent widths EW_0^Lya = 33-43A. Based on the largest spectroscopic sample of 43 z-dropouts that is the combination of our and previous data, we find that the fraction of Lya-emitting galaxies (EW_0^Lya > 25A) is low at z ~ 7; 17 +- 10% and 24 +- 12% for bright (Muv ~= -21) and faint (Muv ~= -19.5) galaxies, respectively. The fractions of Lya-emitting galaxies drop from z ~ 6 to 7 and the amplitude of the drop is larger for faint galaxies than for bright galaxies. These two pieces of evidence would indicate that the neutral hydrogen fraction of the IGM increases from z ~ 6 to 7, and that the reionization proceeds from high- to low-density environments, as suggested by an inside-out reionization model.

Electronic States and Superconducting Transition Temperature based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$

An NQR experiment revealed superconductivity of Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$ (Pr247) to be realized on CuO double chain layers and suggests possibility of novel one-dimensional(1D) superconductivity. To clarify the nature of the 1D superconductivity, we calculate the band dispersions of Pr247 by using the generalized gradient approximation(GGA). It indicates that Fermi surface of CuO double chains is well described to the electronic structure of a quasi-1D system. Assuming the zigzag Hubbard chain model to be an effective model of the system, we derive tight binding parameters of the model from a fit to the result of GGA. Based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we estimate transition temperature ($T_c$) of the quasi-1D zigzag Hubbard model from the calculated value of the Luttinger liquid parameter $K_ρ$. The result of $T_c$ is consistent with that of experiments in Pr247 and it suggests that the mechanism of the superconductivity is well understood within the concept of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid.

First Order Bipolaronic Transition at Finite Temperature in the Holstein Model

We investigate the Holstein model by using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the exact diagonalization method. Below a critical temperature Tcr, a coexistence of the polaronic and the bipolaronic solutions is found for the same value of the electron-phonon coupling $ in the range gc1(T)<g<gc2(T). In the coexistence region, the system shows a first order phase transition from the bipolaronic to the polaronic states as T decreases at T=Tp(<Tcr), where the double occupancy and the lattice fluctuation together with the anharmonicity of the effective ion potential change discontinuously without any symmetry breaking. The obtained bipolaronic transition seems to be consistent with the rattling transition in the beta-pyrochlore oxide KOs2O6.

Stellar Populations of Lyman Alpha Emitters at z~6-7: Constraints on the Escape Fraction of Ionizing Photons from Galaxy Building Blocks

We investigate the stellar populations of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=5.7 and 6.6 in a 0.65 deg^2 sky of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) Field, using deep images taken with Subaru/Suprime-Cam, UKIRT/WFCAM, and Spitzer/IRAC. We produce stacked multiband images at each redshift from 165 (z=5.7) and 91 (z=6.6) IRAC-undetected objects, to derive typical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of z~6-7 LAEs for the first time. The stacked LAEs have as blue UV continua as the HST/WFC3 z-dropout galaxies of similar Muv, with a spectral slope beta ~ -3, but at the same time they have red UV-to-optical colors with detection in the 3.6um band. Using SED fitting we find that the stacked LAEs have low stellar masses of ~(3-10)*10^7 Msun, very young ages of ~1-3 Myr, negligible dust extinction, and strong nebular emission from the ionized interstellar medium, although the z=6.6 object is fitted similarly well with high-mass models without nebular emission; inclusion of nebular emission reproduces the red UV-to-optical color while keeping the UV color sufficiently blue. We infer that typical LAEs at z~6-7 are building blocks of galaxies seen at lower redshifts. We find a tentative decrease in the Lyman alpha escape fraction from z=5.7 to 6.6, which may imply an increase in the intergalactic medium neutral fraction. From the minimum contribution of nebular emission required to fit the observed SEDs, we place an upper limit on the escape fraction of ionizing photons to be f_esc^ion~0.6 at z=5.7 and ~0.9 at z=6.6. We also compare the stellar populations of our LAEs with that of stacked HST/WFC3 z-dropout galaxies.

Statistics of 207 Lya Emitters at a Redshift Near 7: Constraints on Reionization and Galaxy Formation Models

We present Lya luminosity function (LF), clustering measurements, and Lya line profiles based on the largest sample, to date, of 207 Lya emitters (LAEs) at z=6.6 on the 1-deg^2 sky of Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) field. Our z=6.6 Lya LF including cosmic variance estimates yields the best-fit Schechter parameters of phi*=8.5 +3.0/-2.2 x10^(-4) Mpc^(-3) and L*(Lya)=4.4 +/-0.6 x10^42 erg s^(-1) with a fixed alpha=-1.5, and indicates a decrease from z=5.7 at the >~90% confidence level. However, this decrease is not large, only =~30% in Lya luminosity, which is too small to be identified in the previous studies. A clustering signal of z=6.6 LAEs is detected for the first time. We obtain the correlation length of r_0=2-5 h^(-1) Mpc and bias of b=3-6, and find no significant boost of clustering amplitude by reionization at z=6.6. The average hosting dark halo mass inferred from clustering is 10^10-10^11 Mo, and duty cycle of LAE population is roughly ~1% albeit with large uncertainties. The average of our high-quality Keck/DEIMOS spectra shows an FWHM velocity width of 251 +/-16 km s^(-1). We find no large evolution of Lya line profile from z=5.7 to 6.6, and no anti-correlation between Lya luminosity and line width at z=6.6. The combination of various reionization models and our observational results about the LF, clustering, and line profile indicates that there would exist a small decrease of IGM's Lya transmission owing to reionization, but that the hydrogen IGM is not highly neutral at z=6.6. Our neutral-hydrogen fraction constraint implies that the major reionization process took place at z>~7.

Cooperative Effect of Coulomb Interaction and Electron-Phonon Coupling on the Heavy Fermion State in the Two-Orbital Periodic Anderson Model

We investigate the two-orbital periodic Anderson model, where the local orbital fluctuations of f-electrons couple with a two-fold degenerate Jahn-Teller phonon, by using the dynamical mean-field theory. It is found that the heavy fermion state caused by the Coulomb interaction between f-electrons U is largely enhanced due to the electron-phonon coupling g, in contrast to the case with the single-orbital periodic Anderson model where the effects of U and g compete to each other. In the heavy fermion state for large $U$ and g, both the orbital and lattice fluctuations are enhanced, while the charge (valence) and spin fluctuations are suppressed. In the strong coupling regime, a sharp soft phonon mode with a large spectral weight is observed for small U, while a broad soft phonon mode with a small spectral weight is observed for large U. The cooperative effect of U and g for half-filling with two f-electrons per atom $n_f=2$ is more pronounced than that for quarter-filling with $n_f=1$.

Superconductivity in a Two-Orbital Hubbard Model with Electron and Hole Fermi Pockets: Application in Iron Oxypnictide Superconductors

We investigate the electronic states of a one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model with band splitting by the exact diagonalization method. The Luttinger liquid parameter $K_ρ$ is calculated to obtain superconducting (SC) phase diagram as a function of on-site interactions: the intra- and inter-orbital Coulomb $U$ and $U'$, the Hund coupling $J$, and the pair transfer $J'$. In this model, electron and hole Fermi pockets are produced when the Fermi level crosses both the upper and lower orbital bands. We find that the system shows two types of SC phases, the SC \Roman{u'-large} for $U>U'$ and the SC \Roman{u-large} for $U<U'$, in the wide parameter region including both weak and strong correlation regimes. Pairing correlation functions indicate that the most dominant pairing for the SC \Roman{u'-large} (SC \Roman{u-large}) is the intersite (on-site) intraorbital spin-singlet with (without) sign reversal of the order parameters between two Fermi pockets. The result of the SC \Roman{u'-large} is consistent with the sign-reversing s-wave pairing that has recently been proposed for iron oxypnictide superconductors.

Stellar Populations of Lyman Alpha Emitters at z = 3 - 4 Based on Deep Large Area Surveys in the Subaru-SXDS/UKIDSS-UDS Field

We investigate the stellar populations of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=3.1 and 3.7 in 0.65 deg^2 of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field, based on rest-frame UV-to-optical photometry obtained from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey, the UKIDSS/Ultra Deep Survey, and the Spitzer legacy survey of the UKIDSS/UDS. Among a total of 302 LAEs (224 for z=3.1 and 78 for z=3.7), only 11 are detected in the K band, i.e., brighter than K(3sigma)=24.1 mag. Eight of the 11 K-detected LAEs are spectroscopically confirmed. We find that the K-undetected objects, which should closely represent the LAE population as a whole, have low stellar masses of ~ 10^8 - 10^8.5 Msun, modest SFRs of 1 - 100 Msun yr^-1, and modest dust extinction of E(B-V) < 0.2. The K-detected objects are massive, Mstar ~ 10^9 - 10^10.5 Msun, and have significant dust extinction with a median of E(B-V) ~= 0.3. Four K-detected objects with the reddest spectral energy distributions, two of which are spectroscopically confirmed, are heavily obscured with E(B-V) ~ 0.65, and their continua resemble those of some local ULIRGs. Interestingly, they have large Lyman alpha equivalent widths ~= 70 - 250 A. If these four are excluded, our sample has a weak anti-correlation between EW(Lya) and Mstar. We compare the stellar masses and the specific star formation rates (sSFR) of LAEs with those of Lyman-break galaxies, distant red galaxies, submillimetre galaxies, and I- or K-selected galaxies with z_phot ~ 3. We find that the LAE population is the least massive among all the galaxy populations in question, but with relatively high sSFRs, while NIR-detected LAEs have Mstar and sSFR similar to LBGs. Our reddest four LAEs have very high sSFRs in spite of large Mstar, thus occupying a unique region in the Mstar versus sSFR space. (abridged)
