Fractional time differential equations as a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system

This paper is concerned with a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter system, a phase field system modelling the evolutions of structures of grains. Under a suitable scaling, the limit system is formally derived when the interface thickness parameter tends to zero. Different from many other problems, it turns out that the limit system is a system involving fractional time derivatives, although the original system is a simple gradient flow. A rigorous derivation is given when the problem is reduced to a gradient flow of a single-well Modica-Mortola functional in a one-dimensional setting.

A level-set method for a mean curvature flow with a prescribed boundary

We propose a level-set method for a mean curvature flow whose boundary is prescribed by interpreting the boundary as an obstacle. Since the corresponding obstacle problem is globally solvable, our method gives a global-in-time level-set mean curvature flow under a prescribed boundary with no restriction of the profile of an initial hypersurface. We show that our solution agrees with a classical mean curvature flow under the Dirichlet condition. We moreover prove that our solution agrees with a level-set flow under the Dirichlet condition constructed by P. Sternberg and W. P. Ziemer (1994), where the initial hypersurface is contained in a strictly mean-convex domain and the prescribed boundary is on the boundary of the domain.

On a minimizing movement scheme for mean curvature flow with prescribed contact angle in a curved domain and its computation

We introduce a capillary Chambolle type scheme for mean curvature flow with prescribed contact angle. Our scheme includes a capillary functional instead of just the total variation. We show that the scheme is well-defined and has consistency with the energy minimizing scheme of Almgren-Taylor-Wang type. Moreover, for a planar motion in a strip, we give several examples of numerical computation of this scheme based on the split Bregman method instead of a duality method.

The fourth-order total variation flow in $\mathbb{R}^n$

We define rigorously a solution to the fourth-order total variation flow equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$. If $n\geq3$, it can be understood as a gradient flow of the total variation energy in $D^{-1}$, the dual space of $D^1_0$, which is the completion of the space of compactly supported smooth functions in the Dirichlet norm. However, in the low dimensional case $n\leq2$, the space $D^{-1}$ does not contain characteristic functions of sets of positive measure, so we extend the notion of solution to a larger space. We characterize the solution in terms of what is called the Cahn-Hoffman vector field, based on a duality argument. This argument relies on an approximation lemma which itself is interesting. We introduce a notion of calibrability of a set in our fourth-order setting. This notion is related to whether a characteristic function preserves its form throughout the evolution. It turns out that all balls are calibrable. However, unlike in the second-order total variation flow, the outside of a ball is calibrable if and only if $n\neq2$. If $n\neq2$, all annuli are calibrable, while in the case $n=2$, if an annulus is too thick, it is not calibrable. We compute explicitly the solution emanating from the characteristic function of a ball. We also provide a description of the solution emanating from any piecewise constant, radially symmetric datum in terms of a system of ODEs.

Graph gradient flows : from discrete to continuum

This paper gives a framework to study a continuum limit of a gradient flow on a graph where the number of vertices increases in an appropriate way. As examples we prove the convergence of a discrete total variation flow and a discrete Allen--Cahn flow on discretised tori to their respective continuum limits.

On a singular limit of the Kobayashi--Warren--Carter energy

By introducing a new topology, a representation formula of the Gamma limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy is given in a multi-dimensional domain. A key step is to study the Gamma limit of a single-well Modica-Mortola functional. The convergence introduced here is called the sliced graph convergence, which is finer than conventional $L^1$ convergence, and the problem is reduced to a one-dimensional setting by a slicing argument.

Continuity of derivatives of a convex solution to a perturbed one-Laplace equation by $p$-Laplacian

We consider a one-Laplace equation perturbed by $p$-Laplacian with $1<p<\infty$. We prove that a weak solution is continuously differentiable ($C^{1}$) if it is convex. Note that similar result fails to hold for the unperturbed one-Laplace equation. The main difficulty is to show $C^{1}$-regularity of the solution at the boundary of a facet where the gradient of the solution vanishes. For this purpose we blow-up the solution and prove that its limit is a constant function by establishing a Liouville-type result, which is proved by showing a strong maximum principle. Our argument is rather elementary since we assume that the solution is convex. A few generalization is also discussed.

Exhaustive existence and non-existence results for Hardy-Hénon equations in $\mathbf R^n$

This paper concerns solutions to the Hardy-Hénon equation \[ -Δu = |x|^σu^p \] in $\mathbf R ^n$ with $n \geq 1$ and arbitrary $p, σ\in \mathbf R$. This equation was proposed by Hénon in 1973 as a model to study rotating stellar systems in astrophysics. Although there have been many works devoting to the study of the above equation, at least one of the following three assumptions $p>1$, $σ\geq -2$, and $n \geq 3$ is often assumed. The aim of this paper is to investigate the equation in other cases of these parameters, leading to a complete picture of the existence/non-existence results for non-trivial, non-negative solutions in the full generality of the parameters. In addition to the existence/non-existence results, the uniqueness of solutions is also discussed.

Motion by crystalline-like mean curvature: a survey

We consider a class of anisotropic curvature flows called a crystalline curvature flow. We present a survey on this class of flows with special emphasis on the well-posedness of its initial value problem.

A varifold formulation of mean curvature flow with Dirichlet or dynamic boundary conditions

We consider the sharp interface limit of the Allen-Cahn equation with Dirichlet or dynamic boundary conditions and give a varifold characterization of its limit which is formally a mean curvature flow with Dirichlet or dynamic boundary conditions. In order to show the existence of the limit, we apply the phase field method under the vanishing on the boundary and the boundedness of the discrepancy measure. For this purpose, we extend the usual Brakke flow under these boundary conditions by the first variations for varifolds on the boundary.

Normal trace for vector fields of bounded mean oscillation

We introduce various spaces of vector fields of bounded mean oscillation ($BMO$) defined in a domain so that normal trace on the boundary is bounded when its divergence is well controlled. The behavior of "normal" component and "tangential" component may be different for our $BMO$ vector fields. As a result zero extension of the normal component stays in $BMO$ although such property may not hold for tangential components.

Viscosity solutions for the crystalline mean curvature flow with a nonuniform driving force term

A general purely crystalline mean curvature flow equation with a nonuniform driving force term is considered. The unique existence of a level set flow is established when the driving force term is continuous and spatially Lipschitz uniformly in time. By introducing a suitable notion of a solution a comparison principle of continuous solutions is established for equations including the level set equations. An existence of a solution is obtained by stability and approximation by smoother problems. A necessary equi-continuity of approximate solutions is established. It should be noted that the value of crystalline curvature may depend not only on the geometry of evolving surfaces but also on the driving force if it is spatially inhomogeneous.

The Hydrostatic Approximation for the Primitive Equations by the Scaled Navier-Stokes Equations under the No-Slip Boundary Condition

In this paper we justify the hydrostatic approximation of the primitive equations in the maximal $L^p$-$L^q$-setting in the three-dimensional layer domain $Ω= \Torus^2 \times (-1, 1)$ under the no-slip (Dirichlet) boundary condition in any time interval $(0, T)$ for $T>0$. We show that the solution to the scaled Navier-Stokes equations with Besov initial data $u_0 \in B^{s}_{q,p}(Ω)$ for $s > 2 - 2/p + 1/ q$ converges to the solution to the primitive equations with the same initial data in $\mathbb{E}_1 (T) = W^{1, p}(0, T ; L^q (Ω)) \cap L^p(0, T ; W^{2, q} (Ω)) $ with order $O(ε)$ where $(p,q) \in (1,\infty)^2$ satisfies $ \frac{1}{p} \leq \min \bracket{ 1 - 1/q, 3/2 - 2/q }$. The global well-posedness of the scaled Navier-Stokes equations in $\mathbb{E}_1 (T)$ is also proved for sufficiently small $ε>0$. Note that $T = \infty$ is included.
