A new numerical scheme for constrained total variation flows and its convergence

In this paper, we propose a new numerical scheme for a spatially discrete model of constrained total variation flows, which are total variation flows whose values are constrained in a Riemannian manifold. The difficulty of this problem is that the underlying function space is not convex and it is hard to calculate the minimizer of the functional with the manifold constraint. We overcome this difficulty by "localization technique" using the exponential map and prove the finite-time error estimate in general situation. Finally, we show a few numerical results for the cases that the target manifolds are $S^2$ and $SO(3)$.

A finer singular limit of a single-well Modica--Mortola functional and its applications to the Kobayashi--Warren--Carter energy

An explicit representation of the Gamma limit of a single-well Modica--Mortola functional is given for one-dimensional space under the graph convergence which is finer than conventional $L^1$-convergence or convergence in measure. As an application, an explicit representation of a singular limit of the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy, which is popular in materials science, is given. Some compactness under the graph convergence is also established. Such formulas, as well as compactness, is useful to characterize the limit of minimizers the Kobayashi-Warren-Carter energy. To characterize the Gamma limit under the graph convergence, a new idea which is especially useful for one-dimensional problem is introduced. It is a change of parameter of the variable by arc-length parameter of its graph, which is called unfolding by the arc-length parameter in this paper.

Remarks on large time behavior of level-set mean curvature flow equations with driving and source terms

We study a level-set mean curvature flow equation with driving and source terms, and establish convergence results on the asymptotic behavior of solutions as time goes to infinity under some additional assumptions. We also study the associated stationary problem in details in a particular case, and establish Alexandrov's theorem in two dimensions in the viscosity sense, which is of independent interest.

Numerical computations of split Bregman method for fourth order total variation flow

The split Bregman framework for Osher-Solé-Vese (OSV) model and fourth order total variation flow are studied. We discretize the problem by piecewise constant function and compute $\nabla(-Δ_{\mathrm{av}})^{-1}$ approximately and exactly. Furthermore, we provide a new shrinkage operator for Spohn's fourth order model. Numerical experiments are demonstrated for fourth order problems under periodic boundary condition.

On boundary detachment phenomena for the total variation flow with dynamic boundary conditions

We combine the total variation flow suitable for crystal modeling and image analysis with the dynamic boundary conditions. We analyze the behavior of facets at the parts of the boundary where these conditions are imposed. We devote particular attention to the radially symmetric data. We observe that the boundary layer detachment actually can happen at concave parts of the boundary

On obstacle problem for mean curvature flow with driving force

In this paper, we study an obstacle problem associated with the mean curvature flow with constant driving force. Our first main result concerns interior and boundary regularity of the solution. We then study in details the large time behavior of the solution and obtain the convergence result. In particular, we give full characterization of the limiting profiles in the radially symmetric setting.

Existence of asymptotic speed of solutions to birth and spread type nonlinear partial differential equations

In this paper, we prove the existence of asymptotic speed of solutions to fully nonlinear, possibly degenerate parabolic partial differential equations in a general setting. We then give some explicit examples of equations in this setting and study further properties of the asymptotic speed for each equation. Some numerical results concerning the asymptotic speed are presented.

Rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation for the primitive equations by scaled Navier-Stokes equations

Consider the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations as well as the primitive equations. It is shown that the horizontal velocity of the solution to the anisotropic Navier-Stokes equations in a cylindrical domain of height $\varepsilon $ with initial data $u_0=(v_0,w_0)\in B^{2-2/p}_{q,p}$, $1/q+1/p\le 1$ if $q\ge 2$ and $4/3q+2/3p\le 1$ if $q\le 2$, converges as $\varepsilon \to 0$ with convergence rate $\mathcal{O} (\varepsilon )$ to the horizontal velocity of the solution to the primitive equations with initial data $v_0$ with respect to the maximal-$L^p$-$L^q$-regularity norm. Since the difference of the corresponding vertical velocities remains bounded with respect to that norm, the convergence result yields a rigorous justification of the hydrostatic approximation in the primitive equations in this setting. It generalizes in particular a result by Li and Titi for the $L^2$-$L^2$-setting. The approach presented here does not rely on second order energy estimates but on maximal $L^p$-$L^q$-estimates for the heat equation.

Strong time-periodic solutions to the bidomain equations with arbitrary large forces

We prove the existence of strong time-periodic solutions to the bidomain equations with arbitrary large forces. We construct weak time-periodic solutions by a Galerkin method combined with Brouwer's fixed point theorem and a priori estimate independent of approximation. We then show their regularity so that our solution is a strong time-periodic solution in $L^2$ spaces. Our strategy is based on the weak-strong uniqueness method.

The Hydrostatic Stokes Semigroup and Well-Posedness of the Primitive Equations on Spaces of Bounded Functions

Consider the $3$-d primitive equations in a layer domain $Ω=G \times (-h,0)$, $G=(0,1)^2$, subject to mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions at $z=-h$ and $z=0$, respectively, and the periodic lateral boundary condition. It is shown that this equation is globally, strongly well-posed for arbitrary large data of the form $a=a_1 + a_2$, where $a_1\in C(\overline{G};L^p(-h,0))$, $a_2\in L^{\infty}(G;L^p(-h,0))$ for $p>3$, and where $a_1$ is periodic in the horizontal variables and $a_2$ is sufficiently small. In particular, no differentiability condition on the data is assumed. The approach relies on $L^\infty_HL^p_z(Ω)$-estimates for terms of the form $t^{1/2} \lVert \partial_z e^{tA_{\overlineσ}}\mathbb{P}f \rVert_{L^\infty_H L^p_z(Ω)}\le C e^{tβ} \lVert f \rVert_{L^\infty_H L^p_z (Ω)}$ for $t>0$, where $e^{t A_{\overlineσ}}$ denotes the hydrostatic Stokes semigroup. The difficulty in proving estimates of this form is that the hydrostatic Helmholtz projection $\mathbb{P}$ fails to be bounded with respect to the $L^\infty$-norm. The global strong well-posedness result is then obtained by an iteration scheme, splitting the data into a smooth and a rough part and by combining a reference solution for smooth data with an evolution equation for the rough part.

Analyticity of solutions to the primitive equations

This article presents the maximal regularity approach to the primitive equations. It is proved that the $3D$ primitive equations on cylindrical domains admit a unique, global strong solution for initial data lying in the critical solonoidal Besov space $B^{2/p}_{pq}$ for $p,q\in (1,\infty)$ with $1/p+1/q \leq 1$. This solution regularize instantaneously and becomes even real analytic for $t>0$.

The Primitive Equations in the scaling invariant space $L^{\infty}(L^1)$

Consider the primitive equations on $\R^2\times (z_0,z_1)$ with initial data $a$ of the form $a=a_1+a_2$, where $a_1 \in BUC_σ(\R^2;L^1(z_0,z_1))$ and $a_2 \in L^\infty_σ(\R^2;L^1(z_0,z_1))$ and where $BUC_σ(L^1)$ and $L^\infty_σ(L^1)$ denote the space of all solenoidal, bounded uniformly continuous and all solenoidal, bounded functions on $\R^2$, respectively, which take values in $L^1(z_0,z_1)$. These spaces are scaling invariant and represent the anisotropic character of these equations. It is shown that, if $\|a_2\|_{L^\infty_σ(L^1)}$ is sufficiently small, then this set of equations has a unique, local, mild solution. If in addition $a$ is periodic in the horizontal variables, then this solution is a strong one and extends to a unique, global, strong solution. The primitive equations are thus strongly and globally well-posed for these data. The approach depends crucially on mapping properties of the hydrostatic Stokes semigroup in the $L^\infty(L^1)$-setting and can thus be seen as the counterpart of the classical iteration schemes for the Navier-Stokes equations for the situation of the primitive equations.

Growth rate of crystal surfaces with several dislocation centers

We study analytically and numerical the growth rate of a crystal surface growing by several screw dislocations. To describe several spiral steps we use the revised level set method for spirals by the authors (Journal of Scientific Computing 62, 831-874, 2015). We carefully compare our simulation results on the growth rates with predictions in a classical paper by Burton et al. (Philos Trans R Soc Lond Ser A Math Phys Sci 243,299-358, 1951). Then, we propose improved estimates on the growth rate with several different configurations, which are in agreement with our numerical simulations. The influence of distribution of screw dislocations in a group on a line to the growth rate, and the growth rate by a group including different rotational orientations of spirals are also studied in this paper.

A duality based approach to the minimizing total variation flow in the space $H^{-s}$

We consider a gradient flow of the total variation in a negative Sobolev space $H^{-s}$ $(0\leq s \leq 1)$ under the periodic boundary condition. If $s=0$, the flow is nothing but the classical total variation flow. If $s=1$, this is the fourth order total variation flow. We consider a convex variational problem which gives an implicit-time discrete scheme for the flow. By a duality based method, we give a simple numerical scheme to calculate this minimizing problem numerically and discuss convergence of a forward-backward splitting scheme. Several numerical experiments are given.

Global well posedness for a two-fluid model

We study a two fluid system which models the motion of a charged fluid with Rayleigh friction, and in the presence of an electro-magnetic field satisfying Maxwell's equations. We study the well-posdness of the system in both space dimensions two and three. Regardless of the size of the initial data, we first prove the global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem when the space dimension is two. However, in space dimension three, we construct global weak-solutions à la Leray, and we prove the local well-posedness of Kato-type solutions. These solutions turn out to be global when the initial data are sufficiently small. Our results extend Giga-Yoshida (1984) ones to the space dimension two, and improve them in terms of requiring less regularity on the velocity fields.

Well-posedness of Hamilton-Jacobi equations with Caputo's time-fractional derivative

A Hamilton-Jacobi equation with Caputo's time-fractional derivative of order less than one is considered. The notion of a viscosity solution is introduced to prove unique existence of a solution to the initial value problem under periodic boundary conditions. For this purpose comparison principle as well as Perron's method is established. Stability with respect to the order of derivative as well as the standard one is studied. Regularity of a solution is also discussed. Our results in particular apply to a linear transport equation with time-fractional derivatives with variable coefficients.

Approximation of general facets by regular facets with respect to anisotropic total variation energies and its application to the crystalline mean curvature flow

We show that every bounded subset of an Euclidean space can be approximated by a set that admits a certain vector field, the so-called Cahn-Hoffman vector field, that is subordinate to a given anisotropic metric and has a square-integrable divergence. More generally, we introduce a concept of facets as a kind of directed sets, and show that they can be approximated in a similar manner. We use this approximation to construct test functions necessary to prove the comparison principle for viscosity solutions of the level set formulation of the crystalline mean curvature flow that were recently introduced by the authors. As a consequence, we obtain the well-posedness of the viscosity solutions in an arbitrary dimension, which extends the validity of the result in the previous paper.
