Mean-field model for magnetic orders in NpTGa5 with T=Co, Ni or Rh

Characteristics of magnetic transitions in NpTGa$_5$ with T=Co, Ni, Rh are explained in a unified way with use of a crystalline electric field (CEF) model of localized 5$f^4$ electrons. The model takes a CEF doublet and a singlet as local states, and includes dipolar and quadrupolar intersite interactions in the mean-field theory. Diverse ordering phenomena are derived depending on the magnitude of interaction parameters, which qualitatively reproduce the experimentally observed magnetic behaviors in NpTGa$_5$. The quadrupole degrees of freedom are essential to the diverse magnetic orders. It is argued that NpRhGa$_5$ is close to a multicritical point where quadrupoles and dipoles with different directions are competing to order.

Exact density matrix of the Gutzwiller wave function: II. Minority spin component

The density matrix, i.e. the Fourier transform of the momentum distribution, is obtained analytically for all magnetization of the Gutzwiller wave function in one dimension with exclusion of double occupancy per site. The present result complements the previous analytic derivation of the density matrix for the majority spin. The derivation makes use of a determinantal form of the squared wave function, and multiple integrals over particle coordinates are performed with the help of a diagrammatic representation. In the thermodynamic limit, the density matrix at distance x is completely characterized by quantities v_c x and v_s x, where v_s and v_c are spin and charge velocities in the supersymmetric t-J model for which the Gutzwiller wave function gives the exact ground state. The present result then gives the exact density matrix of the t-J model for all densities and all magnetization at zero temperature. Discontinuity, slope, and curvature singularities in the momentum distribution are identified. The momentum distribution obtained by numerical Fourier transform is in excellent agreement with existing result.

Variational Mote Carlo Study of Flat Band Ferromagnetism -- Application to CeRh_3 B_2

A new mechanism for ferromagnetism in CeRh_3B_2 is proposed on the basis of variational Monte Carlo results. In a one-dimensional Anderson lattice where each 4f electron hybridizes with a ligand orbital between neighboring Ce sites, ferromagnetism is stabilized due to a nearly flat band which is a mixture of conduction and 4f electron states. Because of the strong spin-orbit interaction in 4f electron states, and of considerable amount of hybridization in the nearly flat band, the magnetic moments from 4f and conduction electrons tend to cancel each other. The resultant ferromagnetic moment becomes smaller as compared with the local 4f moment, and the Fermi surface in the ferromagnetic ground state is hardly affected by the presence of 4f electrons. These theoretical results are consistent with experimental observations in CeRh_3B_2 by neutron scattering and dHvA effects.

Hybridization and multipole orders of 4f electrons in Pr skutterudites

Characteristics of hybridization and multipole orders of $4f$-electrons in Pr skutterudites are explained in terms of a pseudo-quartet composed of crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and the triplet. It is shown that the contrasting behaviors observed in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ and PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ are ascribed to the difference in triplet wave functions and the CEF splittings.Since a macroscopic degeneracy remains even in the ordered phase with the $Γ_3$-type antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) order,a model with strong AFQ fluctuation and static monopole/hexadecapole order is proposed for PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$.The remaining cubic symmetry explains qualitatively the behavior of staggered magnetization observed by NMR and neutron scattering. For identification of possible hexadecapole orders in PrFe$_4$P$_{12}$ andPrRu$_4$P$_{12}$, eightfold intensity pattern is predicted in the azimuthal angle scan of resonant X-ray scattering. In PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, the ferromagnetic exchange coupling with the conduction band does not lead to magnetic Kondo effect, but a momentum-dependent quadrupole coupling can give rise to enhanced effective mass, which should be sensitive to disorder.

Evidence for Octupole Order in Ce$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$B$_6$ from Resonant X-ray Scattering

The azimuthal angle dependence observed in the resonant X-ray scattering in phase IV of Ce$_{0.7}$La$_{0.3}$B$_6$ is analyzed theoretically. It is shown that the peculiar angle dependence observed in the E2 channel is consistent with the Gamma_{5u}-type octupole order with principal axis along (111) and equivalent directions. Under the assumption that the four equivalent octupole domains are nearly equally populated in the sample, the observed angle dependences are reproduced by calculation for both sigma-sigma' and sigma-pi' polarizations. The calculation for various symmetries of order parameters excludes unambiguously other order parameters than the Gamma_{5u}-type octupole.

On the origin of multiple ordered phases in PrFe4P12

The nature of multiple electronic orders in skutterudite PrFe_4P_{12} is discussed on the basis of a model with antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) interaction of Γ_3 symmetry. The high-field phase can be reproduced qualitatively provided (i) ferro-type interactions are introduced between the dipoles as well as between the octupoles of localized f-electrons, and (ii) separation is vanishingly small between the Γ_1-Γ_4^{(1)} crystalline electric field (CEF) levels. The high-field phase can have either the same ordering vector q=(1,0,0) as in the low-field phase, or a different one q=0 depending on the parameters. In the latter case, distortion of the crystal perpendicular to the (111) axis is predicted. The corresponding anomaly in elastic constants should also appear. The electrical resistivity is calculated with account of scattering within the CEF quasi-quartet. It is found that the resistivity as a function of the direction of magnetic field shows a sharp maximum around the (111) axis at low temperatures because of the level crossing.

Dynamics of the Singlet-Triplet System Coupled with Conduction Spins -- Application to Pr Skutterudites

Dynamics of the singlet-triplet crystalline electric field (CEF) system at finite temperatures is discussed by use of the non-crossing approximation. Even though the Kondo temperature is smaller than excitation energy to the CEF triplet, the Kondo effect appears at temperatures higher than the CEF splitting, and accordingly only quasi-elastic peak is found in the magnetic spectra. On the other hand, at lower temperatures the CEF splitting suppresses the Kondo effect and inelastic peak develops. The broad quasi-elastic neutron scattering spectra observed in PrFe_4P_{12} at temperatures higher than the quadrupole order correspond to the parameter range where the CEF splittings are unimportant.

Quasiclassical Theory for Thermodynamic Properties of the Two-Band Superconductor MgB$_2$ under Magnetic Fields

Consistent account is provided of strongly anisotropic properties in thermodynamics of MgB$_2$ under magnetic field $H$ using approximate analytic solution in the quasiclassical formalism. With the strength of the pairing interactions and the Fermi velocities of two bands as fitting parameters, it is possible to reproduce in wide regions of the phase diagram the $H$- and temperature dependences of relevant quantities such as the zero-energy density of states (ZEDOS), two energy gaps, the specific heat and the $H_{c2}$ anisotropy. It is demonstrated that the velocity ratio of two bands affects considerably the low-field behavior of the ZEDOS and energy gaps. The ratio also affects the high-temperature behavior of the $H_{c2}$ anisotropy. The anisotropy of the coherence length in the $σ$ band depends weakly on $H$ and $T$, whereas the coherence length in the $π$ band remains isotropic even in the presence of the inter-band coupling.

Wavenumber Dependence of Multipolar Interactions in the Anderson Lattice

Multipolar interactions are derived in the orbitally degenerate Anderson lattice with a spherical Fermi surface and one conduction electron per unit cell of the simple cubic lattice. As the crystalline-electric-field (CEF) ground state of $f^1$ configuration, the four-fold degenerate $Γ_8$ is mainly studied. Intersite interactions up to a sufficiently distant pair are Fourier transformed to the wavenumber space. For the $Γ_8$ case, quadrupolar and octupolar interactions favor the staggered order with $\mib{q} = (1/2,1/2,1/2)$, while the dipolar interaction favors an incommensurate magnetic structure with a long modulation period. The latter is due to a Kohn anomaly which is found to be sharply peaked for interaction channels with large angular momenta. Implications of results are discussed for multipole orders in CeB$_6$, and the incommensurate magnetic structure in a quasi-cubic system CeB$_2$C$_2$.

Theory of Crystalline Electric Field and Kondo Effect in Pr Skutterudites

Possible Kondo effect in Pr skutterudite is studied with attention to characteristic features of low-lying crystalline electric field (CEF) levels and the conduction band. A mechanism for the small CEF splitting between a singlet and a triplet is proposed as combination of the point-charge interaction and hybridization of 4f with ligand p states. Provided 4f^3 configurations dominate over 4f^1 as intermediate states, p-f hybridization favors the triplet, while point-charge interaction favors the singlet. For realistic parameters for hybridization as well as 4f^1 and 4f^3 levels, these singlet and triplet can form a nearly degenerate pseudo-quartet. It is found that one of two spin 1/2 objects composing the pseudo-quartet has a ferromagnetic exchange, while the other has an antiferromagnetic exchange with conduction electrons. The magnitude of each effective exchange depends strongly on a parameter characterizing the triplet wave function under the T_h symmetry. It is argued that differences of this parameter among Pr skutterdudites are responsible for the apparent diversity of their physical properties. Numerical renormalization group is used to derive the renormalization flows going toward singlet, doublet, triplet or quaret according to the CEF splitting and exchange interactions.

Theory of Coupled Multipole Moments Probed by X-ray Scattering in CeB$_6$

A minimal model for multipole orders in CeB$_6$ shows that degeneracy of the quadrupole order parameters and strong spin-orbit coupling lead to peculiar temperature and magnetic-field dependences of the X-ray reflection intensity at superlattice Bragg points. Furthermore, the intensity depends sensitively on the surface direction. These theoretical results explain naturally recent X-ray experiments in phases II and III of CeB$_6$. It is predicted that under weak magnetic field perpendicular to the (111) surface, the reflection intensity should change non-monotonically as a function of temperature.

Octupole Ordering Model for the Phase IV of CexLa1-xB6

An octupole ordering model is studied by the mean field theory, and its relevance to the phase IV of CexLa1-xB6 is discussed. The observed lattice distortion along the [111] direction is interpreted in terms of the Γ_{5g}-type ferro-quadrupole moment induced by an antiferro-octupole ordered state with Γ_{5u} symmetry. The octupole model also accounts for the cusp in the magnetization as in the Néel transition, and the softening of the elastic constant C_{44} below the ordering temperature. However, the internal magnetic field due to the octupole moment is smaller than the observed one by an order of magnitude. Also discussed is the possibility of a pressure induced antiferromagnetic moment in the octupole-ordered state.

Multipolar Interactions in the Anderson Lattice with Orbital Degeneracy

Microscopic investigation is performed for intersite multipolar interactions in the orbitally degenerate Anderson lattice, with CeB$_6$ taken as an exemplary target. In addition to the $f^0$ intermediate state, $f^2$ Hund's-rule ground states are included as intermediate states for the interactions. The conduction-band states are taken as plane waves and the hybridization as spherically symmetric. The spatial dependences of multipolar interactions are given by the relative weight of partial wave components along the pair of sites. It is clarified how the the anisotropy arises in the interactions depending on the orbital degeneracy and the spatial configuration. The stability of the $Γ_5$ antiferro-quadrupole order in the phase II of CeB$_6$ is consistent with our model. Moreover, the pseudo-dipole interactions follow a tendency required by the phenomenological model for the phase III.

Lattice Distortion and Octupole Ordering Model in CexLa1-xB6

Possible order parameters of the phase IV in CexLa1-xB6 are discussed with special attention to the lattice distortion recently observed. A Γ_{5u}-type octupole order with finite wave number is proposed as the origin of the distortion along the [111] direction. The Γ_8 crystalline electric field (CEF) level splits into three levels by a mean field with the Γ_{5u} symmetry. The ground and highest singlets have the same quadrupole moment, while the intermediate doublet has an opposite sign. It is shown that any collinear order of Γ_{5u}-type octupole moment accompanies the Γ_{5g}-type ferro-quadrupole order, and the coupling of the quadrupole moment with the lattice induces the distortion. The cusp in the magnetization at the phase transition is reproduced, but the internal magnetic field due to the octupole moment is smaller than the observed one by an order of magnitude.

Interpocket polarization model for magnetic structures in rare-earth hexaborides

The origin of peculiar magnetic structures in cubic rare-earth (R) hexaborides RB_6 is traced back to their characteristic band structure. The three sphere-like Fermi surfaces induce interpocket polarization of the conduction band as a part of a RKKY-type interaction. It is shown for the free-electron-like model that the interpocket polarization gives rise to a broad maximum in the intersite interaction I(q) around q=(1/4,1/4,1/2) in the Brillouin zone. This maximum is consistent with the superstructure observed in R=Ce, Gd and Dy. The wave-number dependence of I(q) is independently extracted from analysis of the spin-wave spectrum measured for NdB_6. It is found that I(q) obtained from fitting the data has a similarly to that derived by the interpocket polarization model, except that the absolute maximum now occurs at (0,0,1/2) in consistency with the A-type structure. The overall shape of I(q) gives a hint toward understanding an incommensurate structure in PrB_6 as well.

High Temperature Expansion for the SU(n) Heisenberg Model in One Dimension

Thermodynamic properties of the SU($n$) Heisenberg model in one dimension is studied by means of high-temperature expansion for arbitrary $n$. The specific heat up to $O[(βJ)^{23}]$ and the correlation function up to $O[(βJ)^{18}]$ are derived with $βJ$ being the antiferromagnetic exchange in units of temperature. It is found for $n>2$ that the specific heat shows a shoulder in the high-temperature side of a peak. The origin of this structure is clarified by deriving the temperature dependence of the correlation function. With decreasing temperature, the short-range correlation with two-site periodicity develops first, and then another correlation with $n$-site periodicity at lower temperature. This behavior is in contrast to that of the inverse square interaction model, where the specific heat shows a single peak according to the exact solution. Our algorithm has an advantage that neither computational time nor memory depends on the multiplicity $n$ per site; the series coefficients are obtained as explicit functions of $n$.

Non-Collinear Magnetism due to Orbital Degeneracy and Multipolar Interactions

The origin of non-collinear magnetism under quadrupolar ordering is investigated with CeB6 taken as a target system. The mode-mixing effect among 15 multipoles is analyzed based on the Ginzburg-Landau free energy. Then the lower magnetic transition temperature and the order parameters are derived within the mean-field approximation. In the presence of pseudo-dipole-type interactions for the next-nearest neighbors, the observed pattern of non-collinear ordering is indeed stabilized for certain set of interaction parameters. The stability of the phase III' in the magnetic field is also explained, which points to the importance of the next-nearest-neighbor octupole-octupole interaction. Concerning the phase IV in CexLa1-xB6 with x ~ 0.75, a possibility of pure octupole ordering is discussed based on slight modifications of the strength of interactions.

Spin-Orbital Wave Excitations in Orbitally Degenerate Exchange Model with Multipolar Interactions

Elementary excitations in the multipole ordered state, which models the phase III in CeB6, are investigated by means of a generalized Holstein-Primakoff formalism. When different kinds of nearest-neighbor exchange interactions between multipoles are comparable to each other, orbital-flip excitations exhibit almost one-dimensional dispersion along the z axis. With high symmetry of the interactions, zero modes appear due to the macroscopic degeneracy of the ground state. The next-nearest-neighbor dipole-dipole interaction, which stabilizes the magnetic order of the phase III in CeB6, lifts the degeneracy and leads to gapfull excitation spectrum. When the octupole-octupole next-nearest-neighbor interaction exists simultaneously, the spectrum shows softening at Γand Z points. These excitations may be probed by neutron scattering and ultrasonic measurements.
