Spatial development of superconductivity in the Sr2RuO4-Ru eutectic system

We have clarified how the enhanced superconductivity, often referred to as the 3-K phase superconductivity, develops in the Sr2RuO4-Ru eutectic system. From the detailed ac and dc susceptibility measurements on well-characterized crystals, we revealed strongly anisotropic shielding, governed by the direction of the screening current dominated within the RuO2 plane rather than by the orientation of the Ru lamellae. The onset temperature of the 3-K phase superconductivity probed by diamagnetic screening is as high as 3.5 K. The temperature dependence of the diamagnetic shielding above around 2 K is well ascribed by the interfacial screening around each Ru lamella. Below around 2 K, the rapid development of the shielding fraction as well as its peculiar esponse to ac and dc magnetic fields are explained by the formation of the Josephson network consisting of inter-lamellar supercurrents.

Critical behavior of the metallic triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet PdCrO2

We report physical properties of the conductive magnet PdCrO2 consisting of a layered structure with a triangular lattice of Cr3+ ions (S=3/2). We confirmed an antiferromagnetic transition at TN=37.5K by means of specific heat, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and neutron scattering measurements. The critical behavior in the specific heat persists in an unusually wide temperature range above TN. This fact implies that spin correlations develop even at much higher temperature than TN. The observed sub-linear temperature dependence of the resistivity above TN is also attributed to the short-range correlations among the frustrated spins. While the critical exponent for the magnetization agrees reasonably with the prediction of the relevant model, that for the specific heat evaluated in the wide temperature range differs substantially from the prediction.

Heavy-Mass Behavior of Ordered Perovskites ACu3Ru4O12 (A = Na, Ca, La)

We synthesized ACu3Ru4O12 (A = Na, Na0.5Ca0.5, Ca, Ca0.5La0.5, La) and measured their DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity, in order to investigate the effects of the hetero-valent substitution. A broad peak in the DC magnetization around 200 K was observed only in CaCu3Ru4O12, suggesting the Kondo effect due to localized Cu2+ ions. However, the electronic specific heat coefficients exhibit large values not only for CaCu3Ru4O12 but also for all the other samples. Moreover, the Wilson ratio and the Kadowaki-Woods ratio of our samples are all similar to the values of other heavy-fermion compounds. These results question the Kondo effect as the dominant origin of the mass enhancement, and rather indicate the importance of correlations among itinerant Ru electrons.

Magnetic-Field Variations of the Pair-Breaking Effects of Superconductivity in (TMTSF)2ClO4

We have studied the onset temperature of the superconductivity Tc_onset of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4, by precisely controlling the direction of the magnetic field H. We compare the results of two samples with nearly the same onset temperature but with different scattering relaxation time tau. We revealed a complicated interplay of a variety of pair-breaking effects and mechanisms that overcome these pair-breaking effects. In low fields, the linear temperature dependences of the onset curves in the H-T phase diagrams are governed by the orbital pair-breaking effect. The dips in the in-plane field-angle phi dependence of Tc_onset, which were only observed in the long-tau sample, provides definitive evidence that the field-induced dimensional crossover enhances the superconductivity if the field direction is more than about 19-degrees away from the a axis. In the high-field regime for H//a, the upturn of the onset curve for the long-tau sample indicates a new superconducting state that overcomes the Pauli pair-breaking effect but is easily suppressed by impurity scatterings. The Pauli effect is also overcome for H//b' by a realization of another state for which the maximum of Tc_onset(phi) occurs in a direction different from the crystalline axes. The effect on Tc_onset of tilting the applied field out of the conductive plane suggests that the Pauli effect plays a significant role in determining Tc_onset. The most plausible explanation of these results is that (TMTSF)2ClO4 is a singlet superconductor and exhibits Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states in high fields.

Spin dependent impurity effects in the 2D frustrated magnetism of NiGa$_2$S$_4$

Impurity effects on the triangular antiferromagnets Ni$_{1-x}M_x$Ga$_2$S$_4$ ($M=$ Mn, Fe, Co and Zn) are studied. The 2D frozen spin-disordered state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$ is stable against the substitution of Zn$^{2+}$ ($S=0$) and Heisenberg Fe$^{2+}$ ($S=2$) spins, and exhibits a $T^2$-dependent magnetic specific heat, scaled by the Weiss temperature. In contrast, the substitutions with Co$^{2+}$ ($S=3/2$) spin with Ising-like anisotropy and Heisenberg Mn$^{2+}$ ($S=5/2$) spin induce a conventional spin glass phase. From these comparisons, it is suggested that integer size of Heisenberg spins is important to stabilize the 2D coherent behavior observed in the frozen spin-disordered state.

Tunnelling spectroscopy of the interface between Sr2RuO4 and a single Ru micro-inclusion in eutectic crystals

The understanding of the zero bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the tunnelling spectra of S/N junctions involving d-wave cuprate superconductors has been important in the determination of the phase structure of the superconducting order parameter. In this context, the involvement of a p-wave superconductor such as Sr2RuO4 in tunnelling studies is indeed of great importance. We have recently succeeded in fabricating devices that enable S/N junctions forming at interfaces between Sr2RuO4 and Ru micro-inclusions in eutectic crystals to be investigated.3 We have observed a ZBCP and have interpreted it as due to the Andreev bound state, commonly seen in unconventional superconductors. Also we have proposed that the onset of the ZBCP may be used to delineate the phase boundary for the onset of a time reversal symmetry broken (TRSB) state within the superconducting state, which does not always coincide with the onset of the superconducting state. However, these measurements always involved two interfaces between Sr2RuO4 and Ru. In the present study, we have extended the previous measurements to obtain a deeper insight into the properties of a single interface between Sr2RuO4 and Ru.

Field-induced confinement in (TMTSF)2ClO4 under accurately aligned magnetic fields

We present transport measurements along the least conducting c direction of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2ClO4, performed under an accurately aligned magnetic field in the low temperature regime. The experimental results reveal a two-dimensional confinement of the carriers in the (a,b) planes which is governed by the magnetic field component along the b' direction. This 2-D confinement is accompanied by a metal-insulator transition for the c axis resistivity. These data are supported by a quantum mechanical calculation of the transverse transport taking into account in self consistent treatment the effect of the field on the interplane Green function and on the intraplane scattering time.

Coherent Behavior and Nonmagnetic Impurity Effects of the Spin Disordered State in NiGa$_2$S$_4$

Nonmagnetic impurity effects of the spin disordered state in the triangular antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$ was studied through magnetic and thermal measurements for Ni$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$Ga$_2$S$_4$ (0.0\le x\le 0.3). Only 1 % substitution is enough to strongly suppress the coherence observed in the spin disordered state. However, the suppression is not complete and the robust feature of the T^2 dependent specific heat and its scaling behavior with the Weiss temperature indicate the existence of a coherent Nambu-Goldstone mode. Absence of either conventional magnetic order or bulk spin freezing suggests a novel symmetry breaking of the ground state.

Ferromagnetism Induced by Uniaxial Pressure in the Itinerant Metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

We report a uniaxial-pressure study on the magnetisation of single crystals of the bilayer perovskite Sr3Ru2O7, a metamagnet close to a ferromagnetic instability. We observed that the application of a uniaxial pressure parallel to the c-axis induces ferromagnetic ordering with a Curie temperature of about 80 K and critical pressures of about 4 kbar or higher. This value for the critical pressure is even higher than the value previously reported (~ 1 kbar), which might be attributed to the difference of the impurity level. Below the critical pressure parallel to the c-axis, the metamagnetic field appears to hardly change. We have also found that uniaxial pressures perpendicular to the c-axis, in contrast, do not induce ferromagnetism, but shift the metamagnetic field to higher fields.

Nearly free electrons in the layered oxide superconductor Ag5Pb2O6

We present first measurements of quantum oscillations in the layered oxide superconductor Ag5Pb2O6. From a detailed angular and temperature dependent study of the dHvA effect we determine the electronic structure and demonstrate that the electron masses are very light, m^* is approximately equalt to 1.2 m_e. The Fermi surface we observe is essentially that expected of nearly-free electrons - establishing Ag5Pb2O6 as the first known example of a monovalent, nearly-free electron superconductor at ambient pressure.

Field-Induced Transition on Triangular Plane in the Spin Ice Compound Dy2Ti2O7

The origin of the lowest-temperature anomaly reported several years ago using a polycrystalline sample of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 had remained unresolved. Here we finally clarify its origin by susceptibility measurements down to 65 mK using single crystals under accurate control of the magnetic fields in two independent directions. We demonstrate that the transition is induced under a subtle field combination that precisely cancel the nearest-neighbor spin interactions acting on the spins on the triangular lattice within the pyrochlore structure. Contrary to the other two fieldinduced transitions, this transition is driven only by the interactions beyond the nearest neighbors. Our observation thus provides the first qualitative evidence for the essential importance of the dipolar interaction beyond the nearest neighbors in the spin ice.

Exceptional type-I superconductivity of the layered silver oxide Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$

We report zero-resistivity transition and the details of magnetic transition of a layered silver oxide Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$ single crystal, which make definitive evidence of superconductivity in this compound. In the AC susceptibility of a mono-crystal, we observed large supercooling, as well as positive peaks in the real part of the susceptibility indicating the reversibility of magnetic process. These observations reveal that Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$ is probably the first oxide that shows type-I superconductivity. Evaluation of the superconducting parameters not only gives confirming evidence of type-I superconductivity, but also indicates that it is a dirty-limit superconductor. We also analyze supercooling to determine the upper limit of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter.

Metamagnetic Quantum Criticality Revealed by 17O-NMR in the Itinerant Metamagnet Sr3Ru2O7

We have investigated the spin dynamics in the bilayered perovskite Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of magnetic field and temperature using 17O-NMR. This system sits close to a metamagnetic quantum critical point (MMQCP) for the field perpendicular to the ruthenium oxide planes. We confirm Fermi-liquid behavior at low temperatures except for a narrow field region close to the MMQCP. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature 1/T1T is enhanced on approaching the metamagnetic critical field of 7.9 T and at the critical field 1/T1T continues to increase and does not show Fermi- liquid behavior down to 0.3 K. The temperature dependence of T1T in this region suggests the critical temperature Theta to be 0 K, which is a strong evidence that the spin dynamics possesses a quantum critical character. Comparison between uniform susceptibility and 1/T1T reveals that antiferromagnetic fluctuations instead of two-dimensional ferromagnetic fluctuations dominate the spin fluctuation spectrum at the critical field, which is unexpected for itinerant metamagnetism.

Magnetodielectric Response of the Spin-Ice Dy2Ti2O7

We report the magneto-dielectric response of single crystals of the spin-ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 down to 0.26 K. The dielectric constant under zero magnetic field exhibits a clear decrease reflecting the development of the local two-spins-in, two-spins-out structure below about 1.2 K. Both the real and imaginary parts of the dielectric constant under magnetic fields sensitively respond to various changes in the spin structures. We found that the real part can be described in terms of local spin correlations among the moments of tetrahedra, rather than among individual Dy3+ moments. Using the peaks in the imaginary part, we have constructed a precise field-temperature phase diagram in the [111] field direction. We thus demonstrate that the magneto-dielectric response can be a high-sensitivity local probe of the spin state of geometrically frustrated systems.

Non-linear Temperature Dependence of Resistivity in Single Crystalline Ag$_5$Pb$_2$O$_6$

We measured electrical resistivity, specific heat and magnetic susceptibility of single crystals of highly conductive oxide Ag_5Pb_2O_6, which has a layered structure containing a Kagome lattice. Both the out-of-plane and in-plane resistivity show T^2 dependence in an unusually wide range of temperatures up to room temperature. This behavior cannot be accounted for either by electron correlation or by electron-phonon scattering with high frequency optic phonons. In addition, a phase transition with a large diamagnetic signal was found in the ac susceptibility, which strongly suggests the existence of a superconducting phase below 48 mK.

Investigation into the Itinerant metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 for the Field Parallel to the Ruthenium Oxygen Planes

We report a detailed investigation into the metamagnetism of Sr3Ru2O7 at low temperatures for the magnetic field parallel to the ruthenium oxygen planes. The metamagnetism is studied as a function of temperature, magnetic field and sample quality using magnetisation, magnetotransport and specific heat as probes. From hysteretic behaviour in the magnetisation, we confirm earlier work and observe a finite temperature critical point at (5 T, >0.25 K). In our highest quality samples two-step metamagnetic transitions are additionally observed at 5.8 T and at 6.3 T, which coincide with a range of broad maximum in the magnetoresistance. At low temperatures, these two metamagnetic features each further split in two. Such behaviour of the multiple transitions are qualitatively different from the first order transition at 5.1 T.

Unusual Oscillation in Tunneling Magnetoresistance near a Quantum Critical Point in Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$

We performed single electron tunneling measurements on bilayer ruthenate Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$. We observe an unusual oscillation in tunneling magnetoresistance near the metamagnetic quantum phase transition at temperatures below 7 K. The characteristic features of this oscillation suggest that it is unrelated to traditional quantum oscillations caused by orbit quantization. In addition, tunneling spectra are found to change sharply in the low bias voltage range of $V$ $<$ 2mV near the transition field. These observations reveal that the Fermi surface of Sr$_3$Ru$_2$O$_7$ changes in a surprising way as the system undergoes strong critical fluctuations.

Low Temperature Specific Heat of Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ in the Kagome Ice State

We report the specific heat of single crystals of the spin ice compound Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ at temperatures down to 100 mK in the so-called Kagome ice state. In our previous paper, we showed the anisotropic release of residual entropy in different magnetic field directions and reported new residual entropy associated with spin frustration in the Kagome slab for field in the [111] direction. In this paper, we confirm the first-order phase transition line in the field-temperature phase diagram and the presence of a critical point at (0.98 T, 400 mK), previously reported from the magnetization and specific-heat data. We newly found another peak in the specific heat at 1.25 T below 0.3 K. One possible explanation for the state between 1 T and 1.25 T is the coexistence of states with different spin configurations including the 2-in 2-out one (Kagome ice state), the 1-in 3-out state (ordered state) and paramagnetic one (free-spin state).
