Determination of the Superconducting Gap Structure in All Bands of the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Sr2RuO4

We have obtained strong experimental evidence for the full determination of the superconducting gap structure in all three bands of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 for the first time. We have extended the measurements of the field-orientation dependent specific heat to include conical field rotations consisting of in-plane azimuthal angle phi-sweeps at various polar angles theta performed down to 0.1 K. Clear 4-fold oscillations of the specific heat and a rapid suppression of it by changing theta are explained only by a compensation from two types of bands with anti-phase gap anisotropies with each other. The results indicate that the active band, responsible for the superconducting instability, is the gamma-band with the lines of gap minima along the [100] directions, and the passive band is the alpha- and beta-bands with the lines of gap minima or zeros along the [110] directions in their induced superconducting gaps. We also demonstrated the scaling of the specific heat for the field in the c-direction, which supports the line-node-like gap structures running along the kz direction.

Field-Orientation Dependent Heat Capacity Measurements at Low Temperatures with a Vector Magnet System

We describe a heat capacity measurement system for the study of the field-orientation dependence for temperatures down to 50 mK. A "Vector Magnet" combined with a mechanical rotator for the dewar enables the rotation of the magnetic field without mechanical heating in the cryostat by friction. High reproducibility of the field direction, as well as an angular resolution of better than 0.01 degree, is obtained. This system is applicable to other kinds of measurements which require a large sample space or an adiabatic sample environment, and can also be used with multiple refrigerator inserts interchangeably.

Superconducting Double Transition and the Upper Critical Field Limit of Sr2RuO4 in Parallel Magnetic Fields

We studied the specific heat and thermal conductivity of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 at low temperatures and under oriented magnetic fields H. We resolved a double peak structure of the superconducting transition under magnetic field for the first time, which provides thermodynamic evidence for the existence of multiple superconducting phases. We also found a clear limiting of the upper critical field Hc2 for the field direction parallel to the RuO2 plane only within 2 degrees. The limiting of Hc2 occurs in the same H-T domain of the second superconducting phase; we suggest that the two phenomena have the same physical origin.

Gap Structure of the Spin-Triplet Superconductor Sr2RuO4 Determined from the Field-Orientation Dependence of Specific Heat

We report the field-orientation dependent specific heat of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 under the magnetic field aligned parallel to the RuO2 planes with high accuracy. Below about 0.3 K, striking 4-fold oscillations of the density of states reflecting the superconducting gap structure have been resolved for the first time. We also obtained strong evidence of multi-band superconductivity and concluded that the superconducting gap in the active band, responsible for the superconducting instability, is modulated with a minimum along the [100] direction.

Anisotropic Release of the Residual Zero-point Entropy in the Spin Ice Compound Dy2Ti2O7: Kagome-ice Behavior

We report the specific heat and entropy of single crystals of the spin ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 at temperatures down to 0.35 K. We apply magnetic fields along the four characteristic directions: [100], [110], [111] and [112]. Because of Ising anisotropy, we observe anisotropic release of the residual zero-point entropy, attributable to the difference in frustration dimensionality. In the high magnetic field along these four directions, the residual entropy is almost fully released and the activation entropy reaches Rln2. However, in the intermediate field region, the entropy in fields along the [111] direction is different from those for the other three field directions. For the [111] direction the frustration structure changes from that of three-dimensional(3D) pyrochlore to that of two-dimensional(2D) Kagome-like lattice with constraint due to the ice rule, leading to different values of zero-point entropy.

Interface superconductivity in the eutectic Sr2RuO4-Ru: 3-K phase of Sr2RuO4

The eutectic system Sr2RuO4-Ru is referred to as the 3-K phase of the spin-triplet supeconductor Sr2RuO4 because of its enhanced superconducting transition temperature Tc of ~3 K. We have investigated the field-temperature (H-T) phase diagram of the 3-K phase for fields parallel and perpendicular to the ab-plane of Sr2RuO4, using out-of-plane resistivity measurements. We have found an upturn curvature in the Hc2(T) curve for H // c, and a rather gradual temperature dependence of Hc2 close to Tc for both H // ab and H // c. We have also investigated the dependence of Hc2 on the angle between the field and the ab-plane at several temperatures. Fitting the Ginzburg-Landau effective-mass model apparently fails to reproduce the angle dependence, particularly near H // c and at low temperatures. We propose that all of these charecteric features can be explained, at least in a qualitative fashion, on the basis of a theory by Sigrist and Monien that assumes surface superconductivity with a two-component order parameter occurring at the interface between Sr2RuO4 and Ru inclusions. This provides evidence of the chiral state postulated for the 1.5-K phase by several experiments.

Detailed study of the ac susceptibility of Sr2RuO4 in oriented magnetic fields

We have investigated the ac susceptibility of the spin triplet superconductor Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ as a function of magnetic field in various directions at temperatures down to 60 mK. We have focused on the in-plane field configuration (polar angle $θ\simeq 90^{\circ}$), which is a prerequisite for inducing multiple superconducting phases in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We have found that the previous attribution of a pronounced feature in the ac susceptibility to the second superconducting transition itself is not in accord with recent measurements of the thermal conductivity or of the specific heat. We propose that the pronounced feature is a consequence of additional involvement of vortex pinning originating from the second superconducting transition.

Effects of In-Plane Impurity Substitution in Sr2RuO4

We report comparative substitution effects of nonmagnetic Ti^(4+) and magnetic Ir^(4+) impurities for Ru^(4+) in the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4. We found that both impurities suppress the superconductivity completely at a concentration of approximately 0.15%, reflecting the high sensitivity to translational symmetry breaking in Sr2RuO4. In addition, a rapid enhancement of residual resistivity is in quantitative agreement with unitarity-limit scattering. Our result suggests that both nonmagnetic and magnetic impurities in Sr2RuO4 act as strong potential scatterers, similar to the nonmagnetic Zn^(2+) impurity in the high-Tc cuprates.

Filling Control of the Pyrochlore Oxide Y2Ir2O7

We report the filling control of the pyrochlore oxide Y2Ir2O7. Metallic ground state appears with increasing substitution content x (x >= 0.3). We have revealed that the density of states at the Fermi level rapidly changes with x by this filling control of Y2Ir2O7.

From Mott insulator to ferromagnetic metal: a pressure study of Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$

We show that the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the Mott insulator Ca$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$ features a metal-insulator transition at 0.5GPa: at 300K from paramagnetic insulator to paramagnetic quasi-two-dimensional metal; at $T \leq$ 12K from antiferromagnetic insulator to ferromagnetic, highly anisotropic, three-dimensional metal. % We compare the metallic state to that of the structurally related p-wave superconductor Sr$_{2}$RuO$_{4}$, and discuss the importance of structural distortions, which are expected to couple strongly to pressure.

Filling Control of the Mott Insulator Ca2RuO4

We have grown single crystals of electron doping system Ca2-xLaxRuO4 (0.00 <= x <= 0.20) by a floating zone method. The first order metal/non-metal transition and canted antiferromagnetic ordering occur for 0.00 < x < 0.15, similar to those in the bandwidth controlled system Ca2-xSrxRuO4 (CSRO). However, comparing with CSRO, we found a rather different metallic ground state adjacent to the non-metallic ground state with canted antiferromagnetic order. Instead of short-range antiferromagnetic correlation found in CSRO (0.20 <= x < 0.50), the metallic ground state of the present system is characterized by strong ferromagnetic correlation.

The ground state of Sr3Ru2O7 revisited; Fermi liquid close to a ferromagnetic instability

We show that single-crystalline Sr3Ru2O7 grown by a floating-zone technique is an isotropic paramagnet and a quasi-two dimensional metal as spin-triplet superconducting Sr2RuO4 is. The ground state is Fermi liquid with very low residual resistivity (3 micro ohm cm for in-plane currents) and a nearly ferromagnetic metal with the largest Wilson ratio Rw>10 among paramagnets so far. This contrasts with the ferromagnetic order at Tc=104 K reported on single crystals grown by a flux method [Cao et al., Phys. Rev. B 55, R672 (1997)]. We have also found a dramatic changeover from paramagnetism to ferromagnetism under applied pressure. This suggests the existence of a substantial ferromagnetic instability on the verge of a quantum phase transition in the Fermi liquid state.
