Unified Spin Order Theory via Gauge Landau-Lifshitz Equation

The continuum limit of the tilted SU(2) spin model is shown to give rise to the gauge Landau-Lifshitz equation which provides a unified description for various spin orders. For a definite gauge, we find a double periodic solution, where the conical spiral, in-plane spiral, helical, and ferromagnetic spin orders become special cases, respectively. For another gauge, we obtain the skyrmion-crystal solution. By simulating the influence of magnetic field and temperature for our covariant model, we find a spontaneous formation of skyrmion-fragment lattice and obtain a wider range of skyrmion-crystal phase in comparison to the conventional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya model.

Instability of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted lattices with time-periodical modulation

We study the dynamical stability of Bose-Einstein condensates in an optical lattice with a time-periodic modulation potential and a constant acceleration force simultaneously. We derive the explicit expressions of quasienergies and obtain the stability diagrams in the parameter space of the interaction strength and the modulation amplitude. The ratio of the acceleration force to the modulation frequency characterizes two cases: integer and non-integer resonances. For integer resonances, the critical interaction strength $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ shows an alternate behavior where the completely unstable regions correspond to the negative effective tunneling strength. Among non-integer resonances, we observe that $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ peaks are centered around half-integer resonances for which the completely unstable regions disappear, accompanied with a whole displacement of $g_{\mathrm{c}}$. Compared with integer and half-integer resonances, the crossovers between them show no explicit dependence of $g_{\mathrm{c}}$ on the modulation amplitude.

Dynamics for partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells

The dynamical properties of partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells are investigated in three typical regimes. In the extreme Fock regime, the time evolution of the degree of coherence is shown to decay rapidly. In the Rabi regime, a relation between the amplitude of Rabi oscillation and the degree of coherence is obtained, which is expected to determine the degree of coherence by measuring the amplitude of Rabi oscillation. The study on the self-trapping phenomena in the Josephson regime exhibits that both the degree of coherence and the initial relative phase can affect the final particle distribution.

Enhancing molecular conversion efficiency by a magnetic field pulse sequence

We propose a strategy to enhance the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency near a Feshbach resonance. Based on the mean-field approximation, we derive the fixed point solutions of the classical Hamiltonian. Rabi oscillation between the atomic and molecular states around fixed point solutions and its oscillation period are discussed. By designing a sequence of magnetic field pulses in analogy with Ramsey experiments, we show that a much higher atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency can be accessed by tuning the pulse durations appropriately.

Spin dynamics of two-dimensional electrons with Rashba spin-orbit coupling and electron-electron interactions

We study the spin dynamics of two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) with Rashba spin-orbit coupling by taking account of electron-electron interactions. The diffusion equations for charge and spin densities are derived by making use of the path-integral approach and the quasiclassical Green's function. Analyzing the effect of the interactions, we show that the spin-relaxation time can be enhanced by the electron-electron interaction in the ballistic regime.

Tunneling spin current and spin diode behavior in bilayer system

The coherent tunneling spin current in the bilayer system with spin-orbit coupling is investigated. Based on the continuity-like equations, we discuss the definition of the tunneling current and show that the overlaps between wavefunctions for different layers contribute to the tunneling current. We study the linear response of the tunneling spin current to an in-plane electric field in the presence of nonmagnetic impurities. The tunneling spin conductivity we obtained presents a feature asymmetrical with respect to the gate voltage when the strengthes of impurity potentials are different in each layer.

Atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency and adiabatic fidelity

The efficiency of converting two-species fermionic atoms into bosonic molecules is investigated in terms of mean-field Lagrangian density. We find that the STIRAP technique aided by Feshbach resonance is more effective than the bare Fechbach resonance for $^6$Li atoms rather than $^{40}$K atoms. We also make general consideration on the symmetry and its relevant conservation law, which enable us to introduce a natural definition of adiabatic fidelity for CPT state. The calculated values of the fidelity then provide an interpretation on why the conversion efficiencies for $^{40}$K and $^6$Li are distinctly different.

Understanding spin transport from the motion in SU(2)$\times$U(1) fields

Starting from a continuum constituted by charged tops, we formulate the classical counterpart of a previously obtained covariant continuity-like equation for the spin current. Such a formulism provides an intuitive picture to elucidate the non-conservation of the spin current and to interpret the condition for the emergence of an infinite spin relaxation time. It also facilitates the discussion on the spin precession in a one-dimensional quantum wire with Dresselhaus and Rashba spin-orbit couplings. Furthermore, we derive the diffusion equations for both the charge and spin densities and find that they couple to each other due to the Zitterbewegung.

Strain-assisted spin manipulating and the discerption of strain-induced spin splitting

We show that the efficiency of manipulating electron spin in semiconductor quantum wells can be enhanced by tuning the strain strength. The effect combining intrinsic and strain-induced spin splitting varies for different systems, which provides an alternative route to understand the experimental phenomena brought in by the strain. The types of spin splittings caused by strain are suggested to be distinguished by the measurement of the electron-dipole-spin-resonance intensity through changing the direction of the $ac$ electric field in the $x$-$y$ plane of the quantum well and tuning the strain strengths.

Influence of inelastic relaxation time on intrinsic spin Hall effects in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas

The influence of inelastic relaxation time on the intrinsic spin Hall effects in a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with Rashba interaction is studied, which clarifies the controversy of impurity effects in the system. We reveal that, due to the existence of inelastic scattering, the spin Hall conductivity does not vanish when the impurity concentration diminishes to zero no matter it is non-magnetically or magnetically disordered. The spin accumulation is evaluated by using the obtained spin Hall conductivity, and an alternate route is suggested to verify the intrinsic spin Hall effect by measuring the spin accumulation at different ratios.

Magnification of spin Hall effect in bilayer electron gas

Spin transport properties of a coupled bilayer electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling are studied. The definition of the spin currents in each layer as well as the corresponding continuity-like equations in the bilayer system are given. The curves of the spin Hall conductivities obtained in each layer exhibit sharp cusps around a particular value of the tunnelling strength and the conductivities undergo sign changes across this point. Our investigation on the impurity effect manifests that an arbitrarily small concentration of nonmagnetic impurities does not suppress the spin Hall conductivity to zero in the bilayer system. Based on these features, an experimental scheme is suggested to detect a magnification of the spin Hall effect.

Conversion of $^{40}$K-$^{87}$Rb mixtures into stable molecules

We study the conversion of $^{40}$K and $^{87}$Rb atoms into stable molecules through the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) in photoassociation assisted with Feshbach resonance. Starting with the mean-field Langrange density, we show that the atom-to-molecule conversion efficiency by STIRAP aided by Feshbach resonance is much larger than that by bare Feshbach resonance. We also study the influence of the population imbalance on the atom-to-molecule conversion.

The effects of optically induced non-Abelian gauge field in cold atoms

We show that $N-1$ degenerate dark states can be generated by coupling $N$-fold degenerate ground states and a common excited state with $N$ laser fields. Interferences between light waves with different frequencies can produce laser fields with time-dependent amplitudes, which can induce not only U(N) non-Abelian vector fields but also the scalar ones for the adiabatic motion of atoms in such laser fields. As an example, a time-periodic gauge potential is produced by applying specific laser fields to a tripod system. Some features of the Landau levels and the ground-state phase diagram of a rotating Bose-Einstein condensate for a concrete gauge field are also discussed.

Unconventional Superconducting Symmetry in a Checkerboard Antiferromagnet

We use a renormalized mean field theory to study the Gutzwiller projected BCS states of the extended Hubbard model in the large $U$ limit, or the $t$-$t'$-$J$-$J'$ model on a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice. At small $t'/t$, the frustration due to the diagonal terms of $t'$ and $J'$ does not alter the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing symmetry, and the negative (positive) $t'/t$ enhances (suppresses) the pairing order parameter. At large $t'/t$, the ground state has an extended s-wave symmetry. At the intermediate $t'/t$, the ground state is $d+id$ or $d+is$-wave with time reversal symmetry broken.

Nonvanishing spin Hall currents in the presence of magnetic impurities

The intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in a two dimensional electron gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling is evaluated by taking account of anisotropic coupling between magnetic impurities and itinerant electrons. In our calculation Kubo's linear response formalism is employed and the vertex correction is considered. In the semiclassical limit $μ\gg 1/τ$, a non-vanishing spin Hall conductivity $σ^{}_{sH}$ is found to depend on the momentum relaxation time $τ$, spin-orbit splitting $Δ$ and the anisotropic coefficient of interaction between itinerant electrons and magnetic impurities. The clean limit of $σ^{}_{sH}$ is in the region of $e/8π\sim e/6π$, depending on the anisotropic coefficient.

Spin relaxation of two-dimensional electrons with a hierarchy of spin-orbit couplings

The density matrix formalism is applied to calculate the spin-relaxation time for two-dimensional systems with a hierarchy of spin-orbit couplings, such as Rashba-type, Dresselhaus-type and so on. It is found that the spin-relaxation time can be infinite if those coupling strengths $α$, $β$, $γ_1$ and $γ_2$ satisfy either condition (i) $α=β, γ_1=0$ or (ii) $α=-β, γ_2=0$, which correspond to the vanishing Yang-Mills "magnetic" field. The effect caused by the application of an external magnetic field is also discussed. It is found that the longitudinal and in-plane spin components can possess infinite life time when the spin components, the Larmor precession frequency and the external magnetic field satisfy certain relations.

Heat conductivity in the presence of a quantized degree of freedom

We propose a model with a quantized degree of freedom to study the heat transport in quasi-one dimensional system. Our simulations reveal three distinct temperature regimes. In particular, the intermediate regime is characterized by heat conductivity with a temperature exponent $γ$ much greater than 1/2 that was generally found in systems with point-like particles. A dynamical investigation indicates the occurrence of non-equipartition behavior in this regime. Moreover, the corresponding Poincaré section also shows remarkably characteristic patterns, completely different from the cases of point-like particles.
