Adaptive Multi-GPU Exchange Monte Carlo for the 3D Random Field Ising Model

We present an adaptive multi-GPU Exchange Monte Carlo method designed for the simulation of the 3D Random Field Model. The algorithm design is based on a two-level parallelization scheme that allows the method to scale its performance in the presence of faster and GPUs as well as multiple GPUs. The set of temperatures is adapted according to the exchange rate observed from short trial runs, leading to an increased exchange rate at zones where the exchange process is sporadic. Performance results show that parallel tempering is an ideal strategy for being implemented on the GPU, and runs between one to two orders of magnitude with respect to a single-core CPU version, with multi-GPU scaling being approximately $99\%$ efficient. The results obtained extend the possibilities of simulation to sizes of $L = 32, 64$ for a workstation with two GPUs.

Coulomb liquid phases of bosonic cluster Mott insulators on a pyrochlore lattice

Employing large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal the full phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model of hard-core bosons on the pyrochlore lattice with partial fillings. When the intersite repulsion is dominant, the system is in a cluster Mott insulator phase with an integer number of bosons localized inside the tetrahedral units of the pyrochlore lattice. We show that the full phase diagram contains three cluster Mott insulator phases with 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 boson fillings, respectively. We further demonstrate that all three cluster Mott insulators are Coulomb liquid phases and its low-energy property is described by the emergent compact U(1) quantum electrodynamics. In addition to measuring the specific heat and entropy of the cluster Mott insulators, we investigate the correlation function of the emergent electric field and verify it is consistent with the compact U(1) quantum electrodynamics description. Our result sheds light on the magnetic properties of various pyrochlore systems, as well as the charge physics of the cluster magnets.

Universal Critical Wrapping Probabilities in the Canonical Ensemble

Universal dimensionless quantities, such as Binder ratios and wrapping probabilities, play an important role in the study of critical phenomena. We study the finite-size scaling behavior of the wrapping probability for the Potts model in the random-cluster representation, under the constraint that the total number of occupied bonds is fixed, so that the canonical ensemble applies. We derive that, in the limit $L \rightarrow \infty$, the critical values of the wrapping probability are different from those of the unconstrained model, i.e. the model in the grand-canonical ensemble, but still universal, for systems with $2y_t - d > 0$ where $y_t = 1/ν$ is the thermal renormalization exponent and $d$ is the spatial dimension. Similar modifications apply to other dimensionless quantities, such as Binder ratios. For systems with $2y_t-d \le 0$, these quantities share same critical universal values in the two ensembles. It is also derived that new finite-size corrections are induced. These findings apply more generally to systems in the canonical ensemble, e.g. the dilute Potts model with a fixed total number of vacancies. Finally, we formulate an efficient cluster-type algorithm for the canonical ensemble, and confirm these predictions by extensive simulations.

Emergent BCS regime of the two-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model: ground-state phase diagram

A significant part of the phase diagram of the two-dimensional fermionic Hubbard model for moderate interactions and filling factors ($U < 4, \, n<0.7$) is governed by effective Fermi liquid physics with weak BCS-type instabilities. We access this regime in a controlled way by a combination of the bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo method with an additional ladder-diagram summation trick and semi-analytic treatment of the weak instability in the Cooper channel. We obtain the corresponding ground-state phase diagram in the $(n,U)$ plane describing the competition between the $p-$ and $d-$wave superfluid states. We also claim the values of the dimensionless BCS coupling constants controlling the superfluid $T_c$ at the phase boundaries, which prove to be very small up to $U=4, n = 0.6$.

Leaf-excluded percolation in two and three dimensions

We introduce the \emph{leaf-excluded} percolation model, which corresponds to independent bond percolation conditioned on the absence of leaves (vertices of degree one). We study the leaf-excluded model on the square and simple-cubic lattices via Monte Carlo simulation, using a worm-like algorithm. By studying wrapping probabilities, we precisely estimate the critical thresholds to be $0.355\,247\,5(8)$ (square) and $0.185\,022(3)$ (simple-cubic). Our estimates for the thermal and magnetic exponents are consistent with those for percolation, implying that the phase transition of the leaf-excluded model belongs to the standard percolation universality class.

Short-range correlations in percolation at criticality

We derive the critical nearest-neighbor connectivity $g_n$ as $3/4$, $3(7-9p_c^{tri})/[4(5-4p_c^{tri})]$, and $3(2+7p_c^{tri})/[4(5-p_c^{tri})]$ for bond percolation on the square, honeycomb and triangular lattice respectively, where $p_c^{tri}=2\sin(π/18)$ is the percolation threshold for the triangular lattice; and confirm these values via Monte Carlo simulations. On the square lattice, we also numerically determine the critical next-nearest-neighbor connectivity as $g_{nn}=0.687\;500\;0(2)$, which confirms a conjecture by Mitra and Nienhuis in J. Stat. Mech. P10006 (2004), implying the exact value $g_{nn}=11/16$. We also determine the connectivity on a free surface as $g_n^{surf}=0.625\;000\;1(13)$ and conjecture that this value is exactly equal to $5/8$. In addition, we find that at criticality, the connectivities depend on the linear finite size L as $\sim L^{y_t-d}$, and the associated specific-heat-like quantities $C_n$ and $C_{nn}$ scale as $\sim L^{2y_t-d} \ln (L/L_0)$, where $d$ is the lattice dimensionality, $y_t=1/ν$ the thermal renormalization exponent, and $L_0$ a non-universal constant. We provide an explanation of this logarithmic factor in the theoretical framework reported recently by Vasseur et al. in J. Stat. Mech. L07001 (2012).

Recursive Percolation

We introduce a simple lattice model in which percolation is constructed on top of critical percolation clusters, and show that it can be repeated recursively any number $n$ of generations. In two dimensions, we determine the percolation thresholds up to $n=5$. The corresponding critical clusters become more and more compact as $n$ increases, and define universal scaling functions of the standard two-dimensional form and critical exponents that are distinct for any $n$. This family of exponents differs from any previously known universality class, and cannot be accommodated by existing analytical methods. We confirm that recursive percolation is well defined also in three dimensions.

Reentrance of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like transitions in three-state Potts antiferromagnetic thin film

Using Monte Carlo simulations and finite-size scaling, we study three-state Potts antiferromagnet on layered square lattice with two and four layers $L_z=2$ and $4$. As temperature decreases, the system develops quasi-long-range order via a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at finite temperature $T_{c1}$. For $L_z=4$, as temperature is further lowered, a long-range order breaking the $Z_6$ symmetry develops at a second transition at $T_{c2} < T_{c1}$. The transition at $T_{c2}$ is also Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like, but has magnetic critical exponent $η=1/9$ instead of the conventional value $η= 1/4$. The emergent $U(1)$ symmetry is clearly demonstrated in the quasi-long-range ordered region $T_{c2} \leq T \leq T_{c1}$.

Softening of Roton and Phonon Modes in a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Roton-type excitations usually emerge from strong correlations or long-range interactions, as in superfluid helium or dipolar ultracold atoms. However, in weakly short-range interacting quantum gas, the recently synthesized spin-orbit (SO) coupling can lead to various unconventional phases of superfluidity, and give rise to an excitation spectrum of roton-maxon character. Using Bragg spectroscopy we study a SO coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb atoms, and show that the excitation spectrum in a "magnetized" phase clearly possesses a two-branch and roton-maxon structure. As Raman coupling strength $Ω$ is decreased, a roton-mode softening is observed, as a precursor of the phase transition to a stripe phase that spontaneously breaks spatially translational symmetry. The measured roton gaps agree well with theoretical calculations. Further, we determine sound velocities both in the magnetized and the non-magnetized phase, and a phonon-mode softening is observed around the phase transition in between. The validity of the $f$-sum rule is examined.

Bond and Site Percolation in Three Dimensions

We simulate the bond and site percolation models on a simple-cubic lattice with linear sizes up to L=512, and estimate the percolation thresholds to be $p_c ({\rm bond})=0.248\,811\,82(10)$ and $p_c ({\rm site})=0.311\,607\,7(2)$. By performing extensive simulations at these estimated critical points, we then estimate the critical exponents $1/ν=1.141\,0(15)$, $β/ν=0.477\,05(15)$, the leading correction exponent $y_i =-1.2(2)$, and the shortest-path exponent $d_{\rm min}=1.375\,6(3)$. Various universal amplitudes are also obtained, including wrapping probabilities, ratios associated with the cluster-size distribution, and the excess cluster number. We observe that the leading finite-size corrections in certain wrapping probabilities are governed by an exponent $\approx -2$, rather than $y_i \approx -1.2$.

Universal Conductivity in a Two-Dimensional Superfluid-to-Insulator Quantum Critical System

We compute the universal conductivity of the (2+1)-dimensional XY universality class, which is realized for a superfluid-to-Mott insulator quantum phase transition at constant density. Based on large-scale Monte Carlo simulations of the classical (2+1)-dimensional $J$-current model and the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model, we can precisely determine the conductivity on the quantum critical plateau, $σ(\infty)=0.359(4)σ_Q$ with $σ_Q$ the conductivity quantum. The universal conductivity curve is the standard example with the lowest number of components where the bottoms-up AdS/CFT correspondence from string theory can be tested and made to use [R. C. Myers, S. Sachdev, and A. Singh, Phys. Rev. D83, 066017 (2011)]. For the first time, the shape of the $σ(iω_n)- σ(\infty)$ function in the Matsubara representation is accurate enough for a conclusive comparison and establishes the particle-like nature of charge transport. We find that the holographic gauge/gravity duality theory for transport properties can be made compatible with the data if temperature of the horizon of the black brane is different from the temperature of the conformal field theory. The requirements for measuring the universal conductivity in a cold gas experiment are also determined by our calculation.

Two-species hard-core bosons on the triangular lattice: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Using worm-type quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate bosonic mixtures on the triangular lattice of two species of bosons, which interact via nearest-neighbour intraspecies ($V$) and onsite interspecies ($U$) repulsions. For the case of symmetric hopping amplitude ($t_A/V=t_B/V$) and $U/V=1$, we determine a rich ground-state phase diagram that contains double solid, double superfluid (2SF), supersolid (SS), solid-superfluid (Solid-SF) and counterflow supersolid (CSS) states. The SS, Solid-SF and CSS states exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking among the three sublattices of the triangular lattice and between the two species, which leads to nonzero crystalline density wave order in each species. We furthermore show that the CSS and the SS states are present for $t_A/V \neq t_B/V$, and the latter even survives up to $t_A/V \rightarrow \infty$ or $t_B/V \rightarrow \infty$ limit. The effects induced by the variation of $U/V$ and by the imbalance of particle numbers of the two species are also explored.

Geometric structure of percolation clusters

We investigate the geometric properties of percolation clusters, by studying square-lattice bond percolation on the torus. We show that the density of bridges and nonbridges both tend to 1/4 for large system sizes. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we study the probability that a given edge is not a bridge but has both its loop arcs in the same loop, and find that it is governed by the two-arm exponent. We then classify bridges into two types: branches and junctions. A bridge is a {\em branch} iff at least one of the two clusters produced by its deletion is a tree. Starting from a percolation configuration and deleting the branches results in a {\em leaf-free} configuration, while deleting all bridges produces a bridge-free configuration. Although branches account for $\approx 43%$ of all occupied bonds, we find that the fractal dimensions of the cluster size and hull length of leaf-free configurations are consistent with those for standard percolation configurations. By contrast, we find that the fractal dimensions of the cluster size and hull length of bridge-free configurations are respectively given by the backbone and external perimeter dimensions. We estimate the backbone fractal dimension to be $1.643\,36(10)$.

Ising-like phase transition of an n-component Eulerian face-cubic model

By means of Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis, we find a critical line of an n-component Eulerian face-cubic model on the square lattice and the simple cubic lattice in the region v>1, where v is the bond weight. The phase transition belongs to the Ising universality class independent of n. The critical properties of the phase transition can also be captured by the percolation of the complement of the Eulerian graph.

Simultaneous analysis of three-dimensional percolation models

We simulate the bond and site percolation models on several three-dimensional lattices, including the diamond, body-centered cubic, and face-centered cubic lattices. As on the simple-cubic lattice [Phys. Rev. E, \textbf{87} 052107 (2013)], it is observed that in comparison with dimensionless ratios based on cluster-size distribution, certain wrapping probabilities exhibit weaker finite-size corrections and are more sensitive to the deviation from percolation threshold $p_c$, and thus provide a powerful means for determining $p_c$. We analyze the numerical data of the wrapping probabilities simultaneously such that universal parameters are shared by the aforementioned models, and thus significantly improved estimates of $p_c$ are obtained.

High-precision Monte Carlo study of directed percolation in (d+1) dimensions

We present a Monte Carlo study of the bond and site directed (oriented) percolation models in $(d+1)$ dimensions on simple-cubic and body-centered-cubic lattices, with $2 \leq d \leq 7$. A dimensionless ratio is defined, and an analysis of its finite-size scaling produces improved estimates of percolation thresholds. We also report improved estimates for the standard critical exponents. In addition, we study the probability distributions of the number of wet sites and radius of gyration, for $1 \leq d \leq 7$.

Scattering and effective interactions of ultracold atoms with spin-orbit coupling

We derive an analytical expression for the scattering amplitude of two ultracold atoms of arbitrary spin and with general spin-orbit (SO) coupling, on the basis of our recent work (Phys. Rev. A \textbf{86}, 053608 (2012)). As an application, we demonstrate that SO coupling can induce scattering resonance in the case with finite scattering length. The same approach can be applied to calculate the two-body bound state of SO-coupled ultracold atoms. For the ultracold spin-1/2 fermi gases in three- or two- dimensional systems with SO coupling, we also obtain the renormalization relation of effective contact interaction with momentum cutoff, as well as the applicability of Huang-Yang pseudo-potential.

Deconfined criticality flow in the Heisenberg model with ring-exchange interactions

Quantum transition points in the J -Q model---the test bed of the deconfined critical point theory---and the SU(2)-symmetric discrete noncompact CP^1 representation of the deconfined critical action are directly compared by the flowgram method. We find that the flows of two systems coincide in a broad region of linear system sizes (10 < L < 50 for the J -Q model), implying that the deconfined critical point theory correctly captures the mesoscopic physics of competition between the antiferromagnetic and valence-bond orders in quantum spin systems. At larger sizes, however, we observe significant deviations between the two flows which both demonstrate strong violations of scale invariance. This reliably rules out the second-order transition scenario in at least one of the two models and suggests the most likely explanation for the nature of the transition in the J-Q model.
